Holy Shit! Portland’s Greg Oden, Out For the Year
Uncategorized September 13th. 2007, 2:31pm
BREAKING: Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski breaks the news that Portland’s No. 1 draft pick, Greg Oden, is done for the season.
Ouch. Greg, update your blog now, dammit!
ESPN has some more on this breaking story. UPDATE: Oden did talk about some of this in his blog at Yardbarker. Yes, we’re crying. Gotta ask yourself … do you think Portland wishes it hadn’t dealt Zach Randolph?
ALSO: Wikipedia, which amazingly already has the Oden surgery listed, also offers up a few names of NBA stars who have had the deadly microfracture surgery: “Jason Kidd, John Stockton and Zach Randolph have been able to return at or near their pre-surgery form while players Brian Grant, Allan Houston and Penny Hardaway never regained their old form while others as Jamal Mashburn and Terrell Brandon never recovered and retired.
In October 2005, young star Amare Stoudemire of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns underwent one of the highest-profile microfracture surgeries to date. He returned to the court in March 2006 and initially appeared to have made a full recovery, but subsequently started feeling stiffness in both knees (his right knee had been overcompensating for the injured left knee). He and the team doctor decided he needed more time to rehab and he did not return until the 2006-2007 NBA season. During the 2006-2007 season, Stoudemire has returned to form, registering numbers comparable to his breakout 2004-05 campaign and playing in the 2007 NBA All-Star Game. His recent success has brought positive publicity to the procedure, further distancing it from a previous reputation as a possible “career death sentence” in the sports world although he was one of the youngest of the aforementioned players to undergo the surgery.”

Yahoo also had it about an hour earlier than ESPN but that’s ok…….they can still get the credit.
You need another anti-Notre Dame piece to increase your traffic again this afternoon.

As a Portland native and lifelong Blazer fan, this is neither surprising or easy to swallow. I wanted Durant for this exact reason; I felt Oden would have constant injury problems. However, it came far sooner than I expected. I suppose the NBA will now modify its national TV schedule accordingly.
Hey! On a positive note, maybe Oden can win ROY next season.

Terry Ryan is a small story … Oden, the No. 1 pick, the franchise savior, missing the season because he’s had the surgery that kills careers.

Sam Bowie is ready to come out of retirement.

Boo hoo. The Irish fans are crying again.
David B – Damn, feel for you guys. Rough.

And all Patriot fans breathe a sigh of relief as ESPN will now point away from the cheating story – until Friday, when Goodell hammers their asses.

Yeah I know, TBL. That’s just a bit of homerism in me.

He probably got the injury hanging James Naismith’s peach baskets up.

How F’d are the TV stations that locked up all the Blazers games? Ouch.
THis is a major, major setback.

Will Greg still be able to tag white women during his recovery? When was the last major injury to top pick BEFORE he ever played for them? I can not recall one.

Man I really feel for all of those people that bought blazer season tickets to see Oden and now get to watch Josh McRoberts

do you think Portland wishes it hadn’t dealt Zach Randolph?
It would have been a lot worse had they also dealt Przybilla. But yeah, it’s a HUGE stomach punch here in Portland.

i would say len bias was injured before his 1st game. he didn’t recover either.

Lets not forget another young big man who recently had micro-fracture sugery.
Amare Stoudemire- He’s seems to have rebounded nicely(pun intended) from the surgery.
Look, Houston, Penny, and the others were well into the end of their careers when they jumped on the micro-fracture band wagon, and all were either in the 30’s, or late 20’s.
At 19 Oden will heal up nicely. But hey look at the bright side Portland fans, along with Roy, Oden(in 2009), Aldridge, & Green the Blazers will get another lottery pick to run along side its young stars.
Look out 2011 because here come the Blazers!

Shoulda taken Durant!

Oden was the first rookie in a long time I can remember being excited about watching.

“Yahoo also had it about an hour earlier than ESPN”
Well, don’t hold me in suspense. Who’s getting credit for it on the Bottom Line. Let me guess–Ric Bucher. Today’s the day he’s not covering Kobe Bryant.

look at this guy the way you look at SHAQ. Oden is the fun guy that SHAQ is but younger. He will be missed greatly and could have had the same impact that Shaq did when he came out of college. This sucks rocks!
