We Woke Up and Greg Oden Was Still Out For the Year.
Uncategorized September 14th. 2007, 11:13am
Dammit. It was not a bad dream. Greg Oden is still out for the season. This is rapidly becoming a national sports tragedy.
We’re not going to make this an ‘I told you so’ post, because those are lame (even though, ahem, we did say Durant was the pick seconds after the Blazers won the draft lottery in May), but as Seattle collectively sips on a White Chocolate Moca this morning, it does so with a sinister smirk. Whew. Thank goodness we didn’t take the fragile guy. The Start of Something Special will just have to wait a year. So … go Sonics! Stay in Seattle!
The web is littered with Oden chatter, but we’ve plucked a few choice ones for you:
* Will Jerry Seinfeld remain a Blazers fan?
* Oden’s numerous apologies makes our sporting heart bleed for him.
* The sky isn’t falling. Oh really?
* If you want to use the word cataclysm, we won’t stop you.
At least we’ll always have this interview.

A few things:
1) Oden wasn’t going to bring them a championship or playoff spot this year.
2) He’s 19, ok he’s 62, but he has plenty of time to come back. The players who haven’t come back were smaller, slashing players. Oden’s a big goof that’s going to stand under the basket. He’ll fine.
3) This gives him time to develop his game while Roy and Aldridge get another year under their belt. Next year they’ll be better.
4) Networks can change the games they are broadcasting, they do it all the time.
5) Oden would have been a 12-10 guy this year, big whoop.
6) He isn’t a bust. He hasn’t played a game. How can someone who hasn’t played be a bust? So stop with the “Should have taken Durant” comments.
Who cares. Everyone is blowing this up to be bigger than it is. He’ll come back, he’ll be fine.

Thank God Simmons knew about Oden’s bad knees all along and didn’t remember ot tell us until just now! And that he found a way to work Lenny Bias into the article!
That’s good insight!

I’m already getting sick of writers calling this a “sports tragedy.” The word tragedy gets thrown around way too freely today. Kevin Everett’s injury was a goddamn tragedy, this is a very unfortunate event. I realize it’s a serious injury that has ruined some careers, but the kids not even 20. Hopefully he can recover ok….and even if he can’t, at least he can still walk for Christ’s sake.

I think the end of SEC poon is a tragedy. TBL, My guess is that you are Blazers fans? The top picks in the NBA and NFL drafts probably will not play this season. Crazy.

Any type of poon ending is always tragic.

SEC poon is done? If so that is tragic.
Oden is 19. He is young enough were he should come back from this within a year.
If/When Oden comes back in a year this might actually make the Blazers a better team for the future With Oden in the lineup they would have picked up more victories and been a team with a high lottery pick. Without Oden they very well could be a top 5 or 6 pick again. Adding another young talented player to this team will only make them stronger for the future. They certainly were not going to contend for a championship in the next 2 years. Lets just hope they do not end up with a head case like Mayo in the ‘08 draft.

TBL is just jumping on the Blazers, the same way they are jumping on Brady and the Browns, it’s no biggie to us here in P-Town. Props to someone giving love to the little stepchild in the NBA in the Pac NW. I agree with Delco and with Moz, this is most def not a tragedy and if the Blazers land another top five pick (well, lottery guaranteed), get Oden back fully healthy and have Roy and Aldridge in their third year, the “breakout” year as many term it, then it is gonna be crazy for the next decade in Portland. Remember as well, Portland has only four players under contract guaranteed (including resigning both Roy and Aldridge) going into the 09-10 season. This is where Pritchard and McMillan initially intended to make hay and be the cream of the crop. So, while the sky is not falling, it is only fitting that this gray cloud would earmark the beginning of fall in Oregon. Greg Oden, the new groundhog.

TBl,
Why are you linking to Steve Kelly? That guy is an unimaginative a-hole with comptent for his audience. Way to go out on a limb there Steve-o.
