The Roundup: MNF Ratings Down, The Program and Kwame Brown’s Belligerent Arrest
Uncategorized October 3rd. 2007, 7:25am
Gabrielle Union is hot, and Hot Clicks found a NY Post report claiming that she’s dating Derek Jeter … the Wonder Years just reset on Ion, so catch the early, quality seasons… Very, very sad photos from the Princess Diana car crash that supposedly haven’t been published before … The Sporting News is about to break onto the blogging scene – they’ve hired Chris Mottram (yup, Jamie’s brother) to run the show … we kept telling ourselves that if Google dipped to $500 a share, we’d buy two shares. It’s now closer to $600, and once again, we’ve missed the boat …
Not many people watched Rockies-Padres, and MNF ratings are down big-time, too. (USA Today)
A bunch of criticisms of ESPN. (Sports Media Journal)
Yup, we totally should have yanked Kathy Ireland from the actors list in favor of one of the guys from the Program, which was a great movie. (Hashmarks)
Niners QB Alex Smith could be lost for the season. (Niners Nation)
How the Eagles are spending their bye week. (Hot Stove Philly)
Packers fans are praying Green Bay doesn’t kick to Devin Hester. (Wisconsin Sports Blogs)
Ricardo Clark flips out and kicks a dude really hard. (Yankee Hooligan)
Kwame Brown was an unruly passenger, and got arrested over the weekend. (Sports by Brooks)
Look at all the Pittsburgh Pirates in the postseason. (Bugs and Cranks)
Uh-oh – Whitlock bringing the funk on the Jena 6. (KC Star)
We’re not familiar with these Holiday Inn commercials, but they do seem funny in an Office kinda way. (Food Court Lunch)
Michael Barrett totally obstructed Matt Holliday’s slide in the one-game playoff. (Shoot Your Hopes and Dreams)
Kaz Matsui is in the postseason, and the Mets are not. Nanny nanny boo boo. (Simon on Sports)
The Rock’s movie was cheesy, but he likes to donate money, which is always nice. (Miami Sports Blog)
David Beckham has bought the Pacific Coast Highway. Obviously satire. (eTrueSports)

Dynamo midfielder Ricardo Clark lost his freakin’ mind, and for all the world to see (well those watching MLS on Spanish-language TV anyway)
Thank you, David Beckham.

I love Whitlock.

I will probably be the only one to comment on this, but those Princess Diana pics were eerie. My goodness, how could the driver see with flash bulbs in his eyes. Yes, just like Fox Mulder I totally think it was a conspiracy and that she was killed. And as far as the ESPN criticism, what about the fact that the anchors feel free to use their own adjectives to describe teams such as “lowly”, plus why does women’s soccer get so much coverage and the LPGA gets nothing. For you men there are actually some very cute women that play golf now, like Natalie Gulbis and Paula Creamer. Thanks for the Diana stuff TBL.

Enjoy The Wonder Years while you can. Beginning next week, one of the greatest shows in the history of the universe is getting bumped to make room for repeats of 48 Hours and some never-before-heard-of piece of garbage called Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye. It’s a cruel, cruel world. Goodbye, dear friend.

guinnessgirl- at least the LPGA is on television every week. Often times I’d much rather watch Morgan Pressel than Rory Sabatini.

“and Hot Clicks found a NY Post report”
can you really “find” something that’s in the newspaper?

Don’t get all philosophical on us, UM.

Chitwood – is Wonder Years getting bumped? Really?

Found an interesting link from the Princess Di story.
Lesbianism in sports? I thought that it didn’t exist and that it is bigoted and all that shit to say so.
She’s kinda hot…

Is there any way to post links the normal way, using HTML so that the link isn’t taking up the page width?

TBL – Seriously. I wouldn’t joke about something like that. Check out the schedule beginning on 10/8/07.

Didn’t the “Jena 6″ beat a kid severely??? These kids are no angels and shouldn’t be treated as such. Nothing gives a gang the right to beat a kid senseless.

He brought the funk and then some. Makes you wonder about some of these other major stories we hear about……..or don’t.
October 3rd, 2007 at 9:33 am
“Bean also gave his story to a blogger, Jordan Flaherty, and a law professor, Bill Quigley. From all of these sources the story mushroomed and became fact.”
So, it looks like a blog started a series of rumors that the big media types parroted without confirmation.
Damn bloggers messing up the MSM all the time…

I reckon MNF ratings (and the MLB game this week) are/were down because of the dymanite primetime schedule from the networks.
While I think these two shows suck, Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor pull major ratings.
Then you’ve proven ratings winners like Heroes and CSI: Miami and How I Met Your Mother and to an extent Prison Break. Plus all of these new shows like Chuck, Journeyman and K-Ville.
This does not surprise me.

My patience defending the 4 letter company has come to an end. Anyone check out Stein’s NBA Power Rankings? I have now completely converted to the other side and think E sucks ass. Those stupid mother son of a guns. Pathetic. No 4 letter watching for me anymore. Although I will continue to go to their website simply because of their fantasy games.

Damn Chitwood. Now I’m bitter. Think it’s worth a full post?
October 3rd, 2007 at 10:04 am
On the “ESPN criticism” story, I have one thing to say (and I posted it as a response to his column):
Do you think Notre Dame will be this “newsworthy” next week, when they begin a streak where they play 5 games in a row at home (on NBC)?
October 3rd, 2007 at 10:26 am
A full post would be fitting…although I’m sure you’d get slammed by the usual criers with their “This is a SPORTS blog!” babbling.

Typical whitlock, complains about a story with racial implications being trumped up by the likes of Sharpton, Jackson and Bean, but then he uses the exact same methods to belittle the racial aspect of the story. And you people love him for it!
The whole point of the “Jena 6″ story was that the charges for beating up a kid were/are far to great for the crime. Whitlock doesn’t mention this at all. No mention that the kid who was the victim was taken to the hospital, released a couple hours later, and attended his class ring ceremony later that night. For this the six were charged with ATTEMPTED MURDER. Finally the charge was reduced, but each still faces something like 15 years in jail. For something that obviously did not have too bad of consequences, and happens all the time with high school kids, seems like awfully harsh penalties. Should they be punished? Absolutely! 1 year, 2 years in jail would not be out of line. It’s the harshness of the penalties that is the real problem in this case.
Now compare Whitlock’s methods to those he decries. Ignore facts that don’t help your cause? Check, see above. Only get one side of the story? Check, just talking to the police and the prosecutor, think they have any reason to shade the story to their favor? Bring up irrelevant points? Check, any juvenile records are sealed and can be no basis for the harsh charges above.
Are the Sharpton’s of the world distorters of situations? Absolutely. Is Whitlock the exact same way? Pretty much. In all honesty, there are so many racial issues that go unreported, especially in the criminal justice system, that a story maybe getting a little more play than it should is something we should all live with.
October 3rd, 2007 at 11:38 am
I don’t think Whitlock was trying to paint the Jena 6 as merely the bad guys, and the white people as victims. His message is that the whole matter is more than just a black/white racial issue, and has been distorted in the media by racial opportunists.
Slate ran a similar article last week.

Those Diana pics were eerie, indeed, but did anyone see the ones of Milla Jovovich? Tony Siragusa is laughing at her.

“1 year, 2 years in jail would not be out of line.”
Sooo, what mere high school beatdown has EVER resulted in a 1 to 2 year jail term?
That is LOL stuff.

Bears return man Devin Hester has the most fumbles of any non-quarterback in the NFL over the last two seasons.
October 3rd, 2007 at 4:36 pm
Whitlock is making a fine career out of being a White man’s apologist and appeaser. White people get to read his distortions and get to say “see , see, there’s a Black man who says it wasn’t racial” He mentions the Black kid’s record, but did he mention the White kids? How he is now a dropout, someone who brought brass knuckles to school. No need to go any further, because “ihaterex” broke it down nicely. How long has Whitlock had the new gig, and how many of the columns have involved one racial aspect or another?
