Was that an A Fire Down Below reference?
October 14th, 2007 at 11:54 am
It sure was.
About 90% of the jokes went completely over the live audience’s head.

90? That’s probably a lowball. I’d say 95.

This is a sad day in SNL history.

When I saw the skit beginning, I couldn’t believe it. After reading his “George Clooney” column this week, all I could think was “well, I guess this means Simmons won’t be able to go to the NE-Dallas game on Sunday. There’s no way his head will fit inside the stadium now.”

Don’t tell me this skit wasn’t overdue. So overdue.

As bad as SNL is, I gotta agree with dmothe30… that skit was seriously overdue.. and shame that alot of the humor went right over the studio’s head…

He’s always insufferable. But yes, we can expect an especially douchey column (or part of a column) this week.
October 14th, 2007 at 5:14 pm
the thing is, the skit isn’t that funny because all of those bad jokes in the skit are things cook would say in real life. cook constantly mispronouncing names and forcing them to cut and reshoot was actually a funnier idea. i can’t believe i’m siding with simmons.

These were terrible, Simmons idea was much better.
If you want some good clips making fun of dc look on YouTube for MadTV clips. They make fun of his standup and the MadTV guy is much better than the SNL guy.

I can’t believe it actually happened, but it was a funny little skit. Not a bad idea.

Give a rest. Do any of the sports blogs have anything to add to the discussion beyond “Simmons is a douche” (and yet, everyone of you reads every last word the man writes…and listen to the podcast)?
October 14th, 2007 at 11:50 pm
Yeah I have something to add….Cook is a douche. I still read Simmons.
October 15th, 2007 at 12:04 am
I can add something as well- when someone is as douchey as Simmons, but still so wildly popular, it’s definitely worthwhile to take a look at the way he does things and try to figure out how he retains his popularity despite being so hated. I hate him. I still read him. I blog about him. I always find it interesting to take a look at how immature, biased, and self centered he can be while still endearing himself to a huge fanbase. And it’s not just people who love Boston as much as he does, either. There are people from all over who gobble up anything the guy writes and I just can’t figure out why.

Are we forgetting that for all his Bill Simmonsiness, he actually did write for a “comedy” “show” for “two years?” I mean, yeah, he’s a sportswriter, but he does actually have some experience in the world of late-night TV and what might/might not fly.
It wasn’t bad. Especially for SNL. The second part was much better than the first part though.

Baseball goals!

tom_servo22, I seem to see it like this: We read Simmons because he was one of the first real ‘fans’ who wrote for ESPN. He just didn’t talk sports - he had his teams and he rooted for them, and he didn’t hold it back. Many of their athletes-cum-talking heads talk about their previous teams, but you’d expect that. But Simmons captures what we all wanted - someone who had a voice on a big canvas and sings his teams praises (of course it was better when they lost a lot more, but still).
Many people read Simmons because - even redundant- he is still more interesting than the Peter Kings and Len Pasquerillas and John Claytons of the world. He doesn’t just ‘break down the game’ he adds the world around him into his discussions. Some of it sucky (he needs some new friends to talk about but it would be better if he lived in Lowell and would have discussions with Paulie who cuts hair rather than hollywood celebs) but he has struck a decent nerve.
Many bloggers understand this. Outside of Simmons and Easterbrook, there is very little interesting on ESPN anymore. And yes, they are nothing compared to Ralph Wiley or Hunter Thompson, but hey - on tuesday who doesn’t cowboy up and ‘hold all calls’ and read Easterbrook and cackle as his pomposity? I still learn something, which is why I normally read in the first place.
that and the boobies.

i love dane. i think he’s hysterical. he definitely lightens up rough days for me. and a lot of his stuff hits home. if you are judging his skits from TV you should listen to some of his CD’s from his tour. they are hilarious!
regardless, you shouldn’t attack dane as a person if you don’t like his material.

Dane Cook is a hack.
