That Was Fast: Rick Reilly Goes to ESPN, Starts in June 2008*
Uncategorized October 19th. 2007, 7:56pm
So we decided to get all journalisticky upon hearing the Rick Reilly news, and emailed around to see what the chatter was about why the most famous sports journalist was leaving the one-time sports bible, and where he was going. The answer is simple: the lure of ESPN got to him. We hear Reilly is going to Sports Illustrated’s bitter rival, ESPN, and he’ll start in June of 2008 (as Steve Rushin had when he left SI earlier this year, Reilly has a non-compete clause). It didn’t take much to sell Reilly on one of those cushy TV-Magazine packages, but our sources don’t think he’ll be writing for the .com. Apparently, the jury’s still out on whether or not he’s getting his own TV show. What does Bill Simmons think of this arrangement? Supposedly he’s cool with it - but only because Reilly won’t be writing online, which is the niche Simmons has carved out as his own. Where it could get interesting is if the network’s new show, E:60, is a hit. Will they want to add Reilly to the cast of characters?
[Update: For any doubters out there, the New York Times has confirmed what we had last night: Reilly to ESPN. What the Times doesn't have are salary numbers. People tend to get worked into an unnecessary frenzy over salaries, but a source tells us that SI's top offer was in the neighborhood of $1.5 million annually, while ESPN's was closer to $2 million.]

another reason to not watch ESPN. Thanks, Norby. Or whoever’s running the ship over there.

Good God. Anyone remember the old CnnSi Tv channel? Rick Reilly was the original Columnist That Does Not Translate To TV guy. Smug he is. Talented he used to be.
He’ll fit in perfectly with the E60 show. Those types of stories are what he does. Oh well. This isn’t going to make it any less likely that I watch ESPN. Barely watch it besides actual games.

This is a head-scratcher to me. SI has the biggest circulation of any sports mag out there, and Reilly has carved himself a deep niche on the back page. I find it hard to believe that he’ll find as much success after making the transition to television.

ESPN gets Rick.
SI gets Dan Patrick.
Advatage: SI.
Rick Reilly is more annoying and self-rightegous than Mike Lupica.

What about Oswald the Lucky Rabbit? Surely he’s involved somehow.

Has anyone seen the last few issues of SI? They are done! It looks like a pamphlet. And have you noticed that there front of the book section looks a lot likes ESPN The Magazine’s (hello, they basically the same format, only less successfully). Let’s call SI what it is, a fossil. Why does anyone want to read about week-old stories. Doesn’t The Sporting News already have that covered? They still have some great writes (Gary Smith), but you have to wonder what they are doing.

i’m not losing sleep over this. reilly is a talented writer, but i loathe golf and hate the nba and those are two of reilly’s favorite subjects. so clearly i didn’t read a whole lot of his stuff.
he’s a good writer, just not my cup of tea.
but if you have to ask me, in a trade between patrick and reilly even-up, SI got hosed. it’s steve carlton for rick wise.

SI is a rag that hates athletes particularly black athletes. Look what the did to Kirby Puckett. They haven’t meant anything to sports for a long time. ESPN hates athletes as well, but they also hate sports. Reilly and his steroid hysteria will fit right in. He’d would be great on E60. More stories on why some athletes are the wrong kind of Negro.

ESPN hates athletes as well
LOL. nothing like friday night narcotics.
please explain in great detail how, for example, bspn did it’s best to bury any negative stories on ron mexico… eeeerrr… mike vick?
how is it that a part-time blogger living in west virginia (mike florio) got scoop after scoop after scoop after scoop on vick when all the high-priced “talent” bspn has (mort, clayton, ed werner, rachel nichols, suzy kolber, et al) never knew one iota about vick, not even a whisper? especially with a guy like mort based in the same town as the falcons?
yet a hick from the mountains of west virginia when he wasn’t too busy with his non-writing fulltime job was able to blow away the aforementioned well-plugged-in crack journalists at the WWL?
you think, just possibly, bspn buried the information because they were in bed with him (financially of course). just maybe, possibly?
yeah. they are really out to get black athletes. uh, huh.

I think it is a devastating blow to SI to lose Reilly. SI has gone through so much flux recently, I don’t know that I would stay there either.
I really don’t understand the tradeoff. A magazine takes one of the best television personalities to write and a television network takes one of the best writers to be a television personality?
SI is the quintessential boardroom trying to get hip to all the new fads and appeal to young readers. It’s not that complicated. Streamline and utilize your website effectively. If you are going to have blogish type things, hire someone whose writing style is geared toward that (i.e. anyone but Peter King).

Does SI get an ESPNNews anchor to be named later in this deal? Or will Stat Boy be the next to go?

Great news for SI. No more awful colums about Reilly caddying for the Dali Lama or Barney the dinosaur or whatever the hell it always is.

Been an SI subscriber for 15 years… gotta say, it’s getting tougher and tougher to cut that check every year. Though losing Rick Reilly might help. I saw somebody else suggest going back to a rotation on the back page. Totally agree. I like stars, but maybe they’ll develop one. Reilly wasn’t likable. I do like golf and basketball, and he still sucks. I think Whitlock said it: When he asked Sosa to piss in a cup, he lost him. And I’d agree. He always seemed a little too vindictive to me. Can we find a guy who still likes sports?

This is not a surprise at all. Kind of weird in a way since Reilly was always on Patrick’s radio show over at ESPN. Wonder if Reilly still goes on DP’s new show (not sure since I don’t listen) or if he will go on the show when Reilly makes the switch over. And when is this going to happen Sandomir says Reilly’s contract is up next month.

Call me crazy, but I want writers to stick to writing, and tv guys to stick to tv…unless, of course, they’re versatile enough to do both VERY well. I see too many people on the WWL these days trying to “branch out” and do something that they’re just not good at. And I’m not one of those Simmons-bashers (although I do have to admit his Boston-centric stuff has been wearing on me), but he’s obviously not that good on TV. His voice sounds weasel-ish, and he’s much too pasty.
There are many others (Bill Curry trying to write articles, etc.) that come to mind…I’ve never seen Reilly on TV, but if he doesn’t do it well, I hope he just sticks to writing.

Good point, Atlanta fan. Sportswriters on television (Lupica, Simmons, King, Bayless) are all thin-voiced (but nonetheless, strident) weasels who get hired by executives looking to get good pub for themselves (hello, Mark Shapiro).
Then, they circle the wagons and protect each other from too much outside flak.
It’s not too hard to figure this all out.
These rodents sit there blasting everybody but when you come after them…..God forbid.

The late Ralph Wiley and Frank Deford are two writers who translated well to TV, IMO, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

Does anyone else think SI might not even be around or at least relevant in a few years? They need someone who gets it to take over that ship. It’s still the best sports magazine by far, but that doesn’t mean much when you’re competion is ESPN The Magazine which sucks from the front cover to the back. I hope SI turns it around. If I were them, I’d try to get Rushin back for the Back Page but I’m sure that’s not realistic.
