Skins at Patriots: Upset Special?
Uncategorized October 23rd. 2007, 11:31am
Just facts: The Washington Redskins secondary is comprised of four first-round draft picks. The Washington Redskins have the third best scoring defense in the NFL (eight-best against the pass). No opponent has passed for 300 yards this season against the Skins (Kurt Warner’s 282 Sunday was tops). With the exception of an epic second-half collapse against the Giants, and a freakish fumble by Santana Moss on a reverse, the Redskins could be unbeaten. The spread for their game Sunday in New England is 16. Does Washington have a chance? Next week, New England travels to Indy for the game.
Here are the four first-rounders: corners Carlos Rogers (ninth overall) and Shawn Springs (third) and safeties Sean Taylor (fifth) and LaRon Landry (sixth). Here are the point totals for the New England thus far: 38, 38, 38, 34, 34, 48, 49. We’ll withhold our pick for later in the week. Discuss.

Those guys all like to lay the wood too…one of the few secondaries that hits.
Too bad Joe Gibbs is such an old twat.

No Chance in Hell. They could also be 1-5, they nearly lost to shitty Miami, could have lost to Philadelphia, and deserved to lose to Arizona. Their offensive line is a mess right now, their offense blows, Patriots cover no problem

God I hope so! Keyword hope.

Fact: the Redskins’ offense is terrible.

Skins have a better shot then any team that has played the Patriots up to this point in the season. They have a strong running game that may be able to hold onto the ball for large chunks of time. They also have a very physical secondary who hit hard and a defensive coordinator who was head coach at Buffalo and had to prepare for the Patriots twice a year. (On the flip side this means the Patriots also are prepared for the schemes he will throw at them.) If Campbell can pick his spots and not make turnovers the Skins may be in this game late.
I still think the Pat’s win this game but I don’t think that they will cover the spread or put up 35+ points.
I also think that this may be the worst type of team for the Pats to play before the Colts game. Skins are going to want to make it a physical game and try and beat up on the Pats. I also think Williams will try and use some blitz packages to get some hits on Brady with Taylor or Landry.

This won’t even be close, much like the rest of the season. The secondary is good, but the Patriot receiving corp is borderline great this year.

Yes, Rogers

Building on what Wags said, that is why the Skins won’t win. They hit, but they don’t tackle. Pats have smart receivers, they’ll get blown up a few times, but they’ll also slip a bunch of those shoulder tackles when Taylor and Landry don’t wrap.

I view it as a very similar secondary to Dallas

The Redskins will be killed this week. They might as well just start prepping for the next game because they don’t stand a chance.
God I hate the Redskins. I live here and I don’t mind the Nats, Caps, Wizards, Terps, Hoyas, or Colonials. In fact, I even root for some of them. But the Redskins are just forced down our throats all the time! Even if they lose 45-3, the post will have a story on Monday talking about how encouraging the passing game was this week. There seems to be a huge following of B. Lloyd, and he doesn’t even hardly play! I think Joe Gibbs was in Nascar last time the guy caught a touchdown pass.
Sorry about that, I just had to let that one out. I promise it won’t happen again.

Only can hope the Pats are looking ahead to the showdown with Indy. Otherwise, the Skins will walk out 4-3. Still think the 16 points is a bit much though.

NFC. Beating a pro team? Really? Pats 41 Skins 13.

I’m a Redskins season ticket holder for the last 5 years but grew up in Maine thus a New England fan. (I’m of the opinion you can have an AFC team and an NFC team.) Everyone asks me who I want to win and who I think is going to win. I want a good game, a game that will make me want to leave the end zone bar after halftime and go back to my seats. Who I realistically think will win are the Pats, they are just way to good…..I also have Moss and Maroney/Morris on my fantasy team.
Redskins 17 Patriots 38.

If you define upset special as coming within 30 points of the Pats, then yes I agree.
The Redskins D is much improved over last year, so maybe they hold the Patriots to 34. That means they would have to score 19 to cover, and that just isn’t gonna happen unless we’re talking a garbage time TD. Because we all know how Belichick likes to roll when it’s garbage time. Fake spike and go for the end zone.

As a Skins fan, I’d like to try the reverse jinx in this spot, but as all Skins fans know, the reverse jinx doesn’t work with Gibbs. Must be a God thing. Anyway, to the guy who whined about the Post over-covering the Skins, I have to say that I am simply shocked - SHOCKED - that the sports section in a newspaper in one of the nation’s larger metro areas chooses to spend most of their resources on the team that plays the country’s most popular sport. Next thing you’ll tell me that newspapers in Gainesville only care about Gators sports.

I don’t know if the Skin’s will be able to get enough pressure on Brady. If you have the best db’s in the world it doesn’t matter if the qb has all day to pick them apart.

Lenn,
You made my point in sentence #2. I stopped reading after that.

If they give Brady more than 5 or more seconds to throw, like every other team that has played them, there is no hope. Rush Brady every down, put him on his candyass a couple of times to piss him off, and then you might have a game.

This game will suck. NE is on such a higher level it’s not even worth discussing. Yeah, I like the Washington secondary too, but come on. They don’t really stand a chance. To beat the Patriots you need to score points. What does Washington struggle with? Oh yeah, scoring points. Pats easy.
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:26 pm
More teams should overload blitz Brady. With Moss buring triple coverage anyway your better off getting Brady knocked up. I do not see the Skins doing this and like others have said already, with time Brady will pick anyone apart.

Its unlikely that the ‘Skins are going to beat the Patriots. However, in my mind at least, the pats are beatable. To me there are really two keys to beating the Patriots:
1)Get your defence off the field (i.e. stop them on third downs)
When the cowboys played the pats, they were effectively stopping the run on first down with seven in the box, and getting pressure with 5 rushers and a zone package on 2nd downs. However, the Pats came out with max protect packages on thrid down and Brady picked the zones apart. In this instance the cowboys had the right idea for the first two downs. Stop the run with seven guys and play zone with 4-5 rushers and covering the outlet. However, on third down it seems best to go man with a safety helping moss over the top and hoping your corners can cover welker and stallworth (easier said then done).
2)Attack the pat’s LB corp with power running.
The only thing close to a weakness in the pats D is the fact that all their linebackers are old and slow (Cowboys averaged 6.5 ypc and recall the damage LT2 did to them in last years playoffs). If you can get some long drives where you’re getting lineman blocking them one on one (very possible with the 3-4 front) I suspect that they will wear down, and they will lose a lot of their effectiveness passrushing and getting back into zones. Given the play of Wilfork and Warren, this wont be that easy. If you notice right now the pats are not using a lot of edge rushes to get pressure on the QB, what they are usually doing is sending 4, with a 5th coming on a delayed blitz from the middle (or covering any receivers out of the backfield). If you wear them down, the delayed blitz becomes less effective, additionally their OLB will not be as fresh to cover slot/TE down the field both of which should contribute to holes in their coverage as the game wears on.
What teams can hope to acheive these objecives? The only one left on the Pats sked that can do this are Indy and Pitt. However, since Roethilisberger plays for Pitt count them out. That leaves us with Indy. Whether Indy can really attack the Pat’s LB corp is questionable too. Is Indy’s base running package still based on the stretch? I haven’t watched any games with indy so its tough to say if they can really get some bodies on ‘em.
