Deathblow to Detroit: Shoulder Surgery for Joel Zumaya*
Uncategorized November 1st. 2007, 4:04pm
Forgive us for being a Debbie Downer late on this incredibly boring Thursday … but Detroit Tigers fans may want to avert your eyes: Joel Zumaya, the flamethrower who missed virtually the entire 2007 season, and was slated to take over closing duties in 2008 for that fossil Todd Jones, injured his throwing shoulder while “moving personal items” during the California fires this week. He’s already had shoulder surgery and is out until mid-season. It’s all very vague at this point, and it’s not that we don’t believe this story … but we’re going on the record as being slightly dubious. [UPDATE: The Detroit Free Press has details: While moving World Series memorabilia from the attic, a box fell on Zumaya's shoulder. It sounds serious.] This is the same guy who suffered a severe injury playing “Guitar Hero.” Yes, the video game.
We were just talking with a friend about what impact losing A-Rod would have on the AL (answer: none … yet), and the only other legit team that could vie for a playoff spot would be the Detroit Tigers. That was assuming Zumaya was the closer.

Reason #1,546,560 why it sucks to live in Detroit.

I’ve been listed as “day-to-day” with Nintendo thumb since the mid-1980s.

Tigers fans must be pisssssssssed
Todd Jones is awful, and if Cleveland duplicates its season … no bullpen by June could mean a 10 game deficit. Easy.

Eric Gagne is available.

yea, detroit’s kinda fucked here. and its not just the tribe they have to be concerned about, the twins get liriano back this year and the white sox shouldn’t be the ridiculous mess that they were last year. but the tigers did get reteria…

Fernando Rodney can close. Zumaya is great, but they did OK last year without him. If they upgrade at a couple positions (3b) and Bonderman doesnt suck, they’re a playoff contender.

FUCK!
Ah well, just another reason for us to sign Rivera…
November 1st, 2007 at 4:30 pm
What? Zumaya’s tattoos started the California fires?
November 1st, 2007 at 4:31 pm
Oh and Bondo was hurt all year, so he is definately >sucks.
November 1st, 2007 at 4:32 pm
This completely sucks ass, guys.
However, Zumaya was NOT going to close this year. They will try to resign Jones regardless of this situation. Just having a healthy Rodney isn’t going to be enough. So, they either need to sign a good setup man or one of the young guys must come into his own this year. They used 5 or 6 young guys out of the bullpen last year and most looked OK, but the 8th inning man must be better than just OK.
I trust Dombrowski to do the right thing. There are few GM’s in any sport I’d rather have.

Closers are overrated. Losing a pitcher who might throw 80 innings in games that you’re winning in the late innings will have a negligible effect on the Tigers’ overall record.

wow, anyone who thinks this isnt a big loss is fooling themselves…
-bullpen, in this day and age, is insanely important, maybe the closer is overrated, but the back end in general has to be good in order for your team to win.
-didnt do too badly without him? um…a complete second half collapse and missing the playoffs is good? then yea, you guys rocked last year.
-tigers have a chance at signing mariano? i wouldn’t count on it. even if you did, itd be for a sick amount of cash, easily $8 mil+ for a guy whos at the tail end of his career?
November 1st, 2007 at 4:46 pm
there has to be some irony in this: zumaya, a closer who puts out fires, injured himself not putting out the fire?
November 1st, 2007 at 4:51 pm
who ever said rivera was going to the tigers
they just spent some money on Renteria
Leyland is trying to bring back the Marlins club that beat Cleveland
pudge, sheffield, renteria
Rivera would maybe go to the Dodgers, but the tigers
not a shot in hell

How could it be a death blow when free agency hasn’t even started? Isn’t this literally the best possible timing for the Tigers?
November 1st, 2007 at 4:59 pm
Andy Hawkins can probably still throw a little.

irishmafia – Pudge was in Texas in 1997 when Leyland, Dombrowski, Sheffield and Renteria won the World Series with the Marlins.
Pudge played for Jack McKeon in 2003 when he and Josh Beckett beat the Yankees with the Marlins.

What makes you think the White Sox will be better? Twins I can buy … but Ozzie’s bunch?

As a guitar hero player, that Zumaya forearm injury is definitely believable. Someone try to play YYZ by Rush on expert and tell me that your forearm isn’t killing..
Um..Gotta go.

This is the exact reason why Rasheed Wallace sticks to Dance Dance Revolution.

TBL – you gotta get rid of that audio advertisement. You know the one that tells me EVERY TIME I VISIT THIS WEBSITE that I’ve won an IPod or XBox 360. It’s annoying; but a man’s gotta eat.
OK, to Detroit. The loss of Zumaya will definitely hurt. He was a primary reason why that team went to the World Series in 2006. He was hurt this season, along with several other bullpeners and starters, and that’s why the Tigers faded in late July through August.
Zumaya wasn’t going to be the closer for Detroit. Jones may have been inconsistent but he was tops in the majors in saves for a reason. Jones is testing the free agency waters right now, but Detroit will likely pursue him regardless of the Zumaya situation.
Zumaya’s injury just bolsters the priority of the Tigers this offseason – strengthen the relief pitching.

A box fell on his shoulder while he was in his parents’ attic trying to salvage items. The fire was only two miles away, so he was probably in a hurry.

Jason Stark just said on ESPN not to rule out the Tigers in the A-Rod thing. What a joke. If my Tigers do it, I am officially a Cincinatti Reds fan.
November 1st, 2007 at 7:28 pm
It’s the Tigers, who gives a rats ass?
Oh, they get the internet in Detroit?
November 1st, 2007 at 7:38 pm
That internet man is a bad dude
November 2nd, 2007 at 8:46 am
How on Earth would signing A-Rod be a bad thing? Look at the proposed infield; Pudge (C), Carlos Guillen (1B), Polanco (2B), Renteria (SS), A-Rod (3B). Then you have Granderson, Maybin, Sheffield/ Thames (OF/DH)… That may be the best line-up in the history of the game.
November 2nd, 2007 at 8:47 am
oh SHIT and then there is Magglio…
November 2nd, 2007 at 9:09 am
Dornoch, eat shit.
Zumaya is a huge loss. The Tigers had the best record in the AL as late as July, but their shaky bullpen situation cost them a couple of games when they could have put the Tribe a little further behind, so he is critical. Anyone who watches baseball knows you have to have a good pen.
TBL, who is going to replace Torii Hunter’s bat in the Twinkies lineup? And Liriano coming off arm surgery is no sure bet to be as good as before. Might take some time to regroup there.
The Sox suck. Guillen is an ass.
The Tribe can be good again, but will HGH Byrd and the bullpen hold up? Betancourt’s arm is held together with duct tape and bubble gum at this point. Like their offense, though.
