Steel Cage Match: Mark Cuban vs. Bill O’Reilly
Uncategorized November 19th. 2007, 1:10pm
On your mark … get set … whine. In summary: O’Reilly rips the movie Redacted as anti-American and vile. He hasn’t seen it. Then, Cuban buys advertising for the movie during O’Reilly’s show. He doesn’t object, and thus Cubes thinks O’Reilly is a hypocrite. Can we use this opportunity to say that we’re pumped about I Am Legend?

Last week on “Hannity & Colmes,” they did a segment asking whether “Lions for Lambs” “bombed” at the box office because Hollywood is out of touch with America. Hannity and their conservative guest insisted that the movie was anti-America and anti-military. Colmes insisted that it was merely anti-war. As it turns out, none of them had seen the movie. Idiots.
Anyway, Hollywood is so out of touch with America that people spend $6 billion a year to go see the movies it makes. If Hollywood execs thought that a movie that lionized George W. Bush would make money, they would make that movie in a heartbeat.

Does Cuban honestly think O’Reilly controls that ads that appear in his show?
The reason people might consider the film anti-American is because of things like this (found on the Wiki link): De Palma has stated the film provided a realistic portrait of U.S. troops and how “the presentation of our troops has been whitewashed” by mainstream media.

Calling for a boycott of a movie seems like a waste of time…if people don’t want to see it they won’t and if they’re swayed by a cable news hack who hasn’t even seen the film they’re certifiable morons
It’s like when the Catholics protested against Dogma without even realizing that it was a pro-Faith movie

Anybody that does not agree with O’Really 100% of the time is considered anti-American.
On the Fox Opinion Network, it is considered pro-American to send our young men and women into a Civil War, extend their deployments, not give them proper armor and discredit any of them that disagree with the war. It is anti-American to want them brought home safely. It is also anti-American to write fictional stories about anything that shows any war in a negative light.
O’Really also thought that the Bourne movies were anti-American.

Mike is that quote really anti American?

Cuban’s right, as usual.
November 19th, 2007 at 2:09 pm
No, it’s not. But it makes me wonder why this filmmaker would choose – of all the potential story lines surrounding the troops; some that are, you know, actually positive – to go with this particular angle. This may be a “realistic portrait” of the five U.S. troops charged with these crimes, but to imply that this conduct is representative on our troops as a whole, and that troop misconduct has been “whitewashed” by our mainstream media (which includes, of course, the NYT) is an absolute joke.
They can choose to make whatever movies they want, and people have a right to see or not see them, of course.

If Bill O’Reilly were to get hit by a bus, I’d shed not one fucking tear. He can kiss my hairy white ass.

Why yes, TBL, I would like to discuss I Am Legend. I know it’s a re-make of a re-make, but since I don’t know any of the story, it should be a good show to see.

I am Legend = Armageddon 2.
November 19th, 2007 at 2:46 pm
I don’t understand the trailer for I Am Legend. How is it that lions end up in New York? Did they escape from the zoo?
Looks alright, but I haven’t enjoyed a Will Smith movie since MIB, so I’m not optimistic.
Oh yeah, both Cuban and O’Reilly are idiots.
November 19th, 2007 at 3:38 pm
obvioulsy someone hasnt seen armageddon. unless they are are arguing that will smith is whiter than bruce willis
November 19th, 2007 at 3:46 pm
It doesn’t matter who wins O’Reilly v. Cuban cuz they’re both losers.
November 19th, 2007 at 4:01 pm
TBL- the book “I am Legend” (actually a short story) is fucking awesome. It was wrote in the 50’s and Dean Koontz and Stephen King attribute thier sucess to it. “One of the best vampire stories of all time.”
Anyway, ya’ll dont read books.

Who cares about O’Reilly or Cuban, they both blow!
November 19th, 2007 at 4:29 pm
Cuban > Fox News
November 19th, 2007 at 4:50 pm
You people sadden me. Cuban may not be everyone’s favorite owner or personality but he clearly does not deserve to be in the same sentence. With Bill O’Reilly.
November 19th, 2007 at 4:51 pm
Lions for Lambs bombed. The new DePalma movie will bomb as well. If Cuban is stupid enough to buy advertising on a show that blasts him, then he’s just a dope. That’s doesn’t mean anyone’s a hypocrite.
Brian — if Hollyweird knows so much about what americans will pay for, then how come they all thought The Passion would fail? Turns out, liberals in Hollywood know nothing about the Red States and are constantly mis-marketing and picking poor scripts that translate well in the little bubble they live in.
It’s like Pauline Kael saying, “I can’t believe Nixon won, I don’t know anyone that voted for him!”
November 19th, 2007 at 5:17 pm
I’m not saying they don’t make mistakes. If they had thought they could have made money off of “The Passion of the Christ,” those liberals would have given it the green light in a heartbeat. Profits trump politics. Just look at Murdoch: he makes money hand over fist with a conservative news channel even as his over-the-air network depicts all sorts of things that make conservatives apoplectic.
If they’re constantly “mis-marketing,” how do they sell so many tickets? First of all, most of the movies that come out of Hollywood are designed to appeal to only one constituency– the lowest common denominator. Movies with a political point of view are not designed or expected to do big box office. A movie like “Lions for Lambs” goes over the head of the average moviegoer, be they liberal, conservative or moderate. “Flags of Our Fathers” didn’t exactly clean up at the box office either.
November 19th, 2007 at 5:27 pm
What’s O’Reilly doing? Didn’t Trump and Pat Riley put him in his rightful place already? Way to pile on, ha!
November 19th, 2007 at 5:29 pm
When I think of charged political debate, I think of TBL.
November 19th, 2007 at 5:39 pm
O’Reilly is such an anti-American bastard. No one should take money from that terrorist-supporter, Mark Cuban.
On the other hand, I can’t blame him for taking money.

movies are way less profitable than they used to be
