ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit Was Wrong: Les Miles Staying at LSU (Plus Video!)
College Football, Video December 1st. 2007, 2:08pm
Heard on the radio this morning that ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit was reporting that “barring something extraordinary,” Les Miles was going to Michigan. Interesting. Didn’t know Kirk Herbstreit was working the phones. And here we thought he was just a talking head! Now, one-time TBL interview subject Jim Carty is reporting out of Ann Arbor that Les Miles is staying at LSU, and a press conference will happen at 1:45 today (video below) to announce it. No need for a mea culpa, Kirk. Unless you really think it’s necessary. (UPDATE: Miles came out firing at ESPN in his press conference. Pointed comments in the direction of Herbie. If Missouri and WVU win today, it’ll be a long Sunday in the Herbie Household.)
Feel free to use this as the college football thread of the day. BC is up 10-0 on VT. The Eagles scored a freak defensive TD and just tacked on a field goal. And now, it’s over: VT 30, BC 16. Tennessee leads LSU 7-3 but the Tigers are in the red zone late in the first quarter.

I loved the headline “Kirk Herstreit Was Wrong.” I think you should make that your de facto college football headline.
December is starting off well.
December 1st, 2007 at 2:27 pm
To me, Les Miles really didn’t say anything during that press conference. He just said “I am the LSU coach”. No mention of any contract extension.
December 1st, 2007 at 2:40 pm
Herbie was hardly the only one who got it wrong. Michigan fans should count their blessings; Miles is not a great coach. Would have loved to see Spurrier at LSU though.
Got BC + 5 today, they should be up by 10 if they could kick the ball. Leaning toward OU -3 for tonight.
December 1st, 2007 at 2:42 pm
-miles
called out!
December 1st, 2007 at 2:44 pm
Mike – I think the key with Herbie was that he called it THIS MORNING and it was reported as fact everywhere. This guy is a TV analyst. If Forde calls something, that’s one thing. If Buster Olney calls something, that works.
A TV analyst?
I took VT -4.5, Mike. Also pumped that Davidson only lost to Duke by six (had em 8), because now i just need the Bonnies to beat Canisius for a nice college hoops parlay.
December 1st, 2007 at 2:50 pm
John Saunders/Craig James making excuses for ESPN right now. Pathetic.
TBL did you know that PFT started back up it’s college version? Worth checking out:

Any thoughts on LSU giving a score v TENN?
December 1st, 2007 at 3:10 pm
TBL – Are you still high on your Paul Johnson to Nebraska claim? I was too at first when I thought Les Miles was going to the Big House and Pelini would stay and take over as the LSU coach. Now, I’m not so sure. I’m thinking Pelini to the Huskers to be announced on Monday.
December 1st, 2007 at 3:27 pm
Who’s a bigger fraud? Kirk Herbstreit or Peter King?
I vote for King but nobody knows that because it’s writers protecting writers. Nobody circles the wagons like those print hacks…..
December 1st, 2007 at 3:27 pm
second half VT -3 is a steal.
December 1st, 2007 at 3:33 pm
re: Johnson … i said if a coach wasn’t named before Army/Navy then it’d be Johnson. So far, all I’ve seen is the Pat Forde report, which Osbourne didn’t comment on. Could be Pellini wanted to see about the Miles job … could be that Nebraska is waiting to talk to Johnson after the Navy game. But Forde is good, and usually on point ….
Now that Miles is pissed AND staying at LSU, i really wish i could pick my Tenn pick. But is Flynn starting? Or Hurt?
December 1st, 2007 at 3:33 pm
As a Buckeye fan, I’m a little upset. Les Miles would be a disaster at Michigan. Tressel would beat him worse the VLoyd.
As someone who realizes that Michigan being good is great for college football, I’m glad. Miles is an arrogant dumbass who hasn’t accomplished nearly enough to warrant the hype he gets. He got OkSt back to decent and has failed to capitalize on the momentum Saban built at LSU. What in the world makes anyone think he will lead Michigan back to the top?
I’ll tell you, it’s the SEC hype machine. People view the SEC as vastly superior (save the comments for a different argument, so people think he could walk into Ann Arbor and dominate the Big Ten. That’s not how things work in the real world.
Schiano, Pinkel, Chris Peterson, or Ron English are all much better choices for Michigan.
December 1st, 2007 at 3:36 pm
Les Miles is 32-6 at LSU and could have 3 top-5 finishes in his first 3 years.
So SHUT UP.
Oh, how I wish that this was the straw that breaks ESPN’s back. But I’m sure it won’t be.
December 1st, 2007 at 3:44 pm
And they won a national title under Saban. Under Miles they’ve actually underachieved slightly. So either the expectations were too high and LSU has actually been over-ranked during his tenure, or the team has underachieved the last two years.
Can’t have it both ways.
December 1st, 2007 at 3:55 pm
I love me some Herbie but leave the source reporting to the Joe Schad and Pat Forde’s of the world. When they say something is going down, it usually happens. Now Herbie just has egg all over his face for going with his “gut extinct” instead of getting a confirmed story.
December 1st, 2007 at 4:07 pm
was anyone watching Ole Miss-New Mexico? Unreal! I had NM +8 on the road in a three-teamer … Ole Miss led by 20 with 8 mins left. NM with a flurry, Ole Miss can’t make FTs and it was down to 5 with 14 seconds left. Not sure what happened, but Ole Miss won by 8. Push. Blast!
December 1st, 2007 at 4:28 pm
Matt Ryan just went Favre and threw a hideous duck that will most likely kill any opportunity he had at the Heisman.
December 1st, 2007 at 4:45 pm
Thrown off his back foot. Bad move. Unless .. you had VT to cover.
Wow, that LSU freshman qb just looked super shaky on the option. Verne’s got the call, so sit back and enjoy.
December 1st, 2007 at 4:47 pm
Matt Ryan blows.
December 1st, 2007 at 5:21 pm
Ohio High School D-IV state title game on STO. Coldwater vs nationally ranked Cardinal Mooney. Now this is a football game. Verne should be there.
The d-I title game tonight will be a hell of a game, too.
December 1st, 2007 at 6:29 pm
the superfrauds were who we thought they were
December 1st, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Feel bad for Herbie. Don’t think he showed up for work this morning and told his boss he had breaking news. This was put into his ear and he is the pretty face who had to deliever it.
Herbie isn’t the bad guy here. He’s a pretty down to earth, fair guy. Lets not blame him for all the ills of ESPN who I too have lost a lot of respect for. It is issue after issue with these guys.

the best part of this whole thing is what saunders just said: “to be fair, he did have permission to talk to michigan…”
oh, so i guess that automatically means he’s taking the job. great rationale. don’t apologize for screwing up or anything. thank god i get my news from blogs and the homeless guy down the street from me.
also…we’re centering everything now?
December 1st, 2007 at 6:58 pm
Why would someone from Michigan tell Herbstreit the truth?
December 1st, 2007 at 7:06 pm
wait … is the whole post centered? or just the video?
December 1st, 2007 at 7:08 pm
Not centered on my Firefox.
Have TEN +6, under 27.5 and those two parlayed for the 2nd half. Not feeling good.
December 1st, 2007 at 7:26 pm
Although, to be fair to Herbstreit (which is something I don’t like to do too often), he did say ‘barring something extraordinary’. Maybe the ‘extraordinary’ was that the money was just too good to leave. It’s well known that Michigan underpays their coaches. He probably was all set to go, but LSU came back with 1.5-2 million more a year. If he would have said ‘Miles is going. Nothing is going to get in the way of this deal. I guarantee he’s the new Michigan coach’, then it would be more of a big deal.
December 1st, 2007 at 7:30 pm
Donroch, whatever
1. Herbie reported it last night on .com
2. Why would espn give it to herbie, when there is fowler, rece, and desmond who is on the search committiee for the headcoach.
3. Herbie confirmed to the AJC.com that he still believes in his source and his source has not been wrong before.
4. Freep is reporting herbie was right
5. How did herbie know about Tenuteu as the defensive coor. job.
Tenuteu said him and herbie are friends and he was 90% to be the defensive coor. at UM.
6. Go to Mgoblog and read the comments, they said herbie was more than likely right and Carr fucked this up.
7. Even Fox’s reporter said herbie was more right than people want to admit.
8. Miles hasn’t signed anything yet, and when he said he can speak for himself he was talking about LSU’s AD
December 1st, 2007 at 7:57 pm
LSU is the national champions! Tennessee is the runner-up!
December 1st, 2007 at 8:22 pm
We’re about seven quarters away from an LSU-Georgia title game.
Fuck Ohio State
And yes, everyone’s post are centered.
December 1st, 2007 at 8:52 pm
How much was Dennis Dixon worth to Oregon, which goes down to Oregon State? How good would we think Georgia is without their now-inexplicable losses to South Carolina and Tennessee? Where would Virginia Tech be without Matty Ice’s ludicrous comeback in the sleet earlier this year?
College football’s greatest season ever. Glad to have enjoyed it.
/cheering for OU, Pitt so we can have a UGA-TOSU championship game
December 1st, 2007 at 9:56 pm
Don’t rule out Miles leaving LSU just yet. Nick Saban’s not coaching the Dolphins anymore, is he?
December 1st, 2007 at 10:08 pm
This Pitt/WVU is hands down the worst officiated game of the year. Questionable calls are common. But blatant misreads of plays that are costing both teams points is unacceptable this late in the season.
Holding penalties for WRs? “Bullshit.” – Dave Wannstache
December 1st, 2007 at 10:11 pm
That holding call was utter bullshit.
I’m getting nervous. Pitt up 10-7 with only one talented offensive player and Oklahoma/Mizzou tied. Gonna be a nail-biting couple of hours for the Buckeyes.
December 1st, 2007 at 10:19 pm
Please God let this be a Buckeye-free national championship game . . .
December 1st, 2007 at 10:46 pm
The refs are trying to give this game to WVU. Jesus titty fucking Christ. Two holding calls on the same WR? Even Hue Hollins thinks that is harsh.
December 1st, 2007 at 10:52 pm
Seriously. “Excessive celebrating” calls are being made in a rivalry game? All four of these refs should lose their jobs after this debacle.
December 1st, 2007 at 10:54 pm
The BCS is about to officially explode….OSU vs ???? Im guessing VT cause how can they send Georgia and Kansas when they didn’t win the SEC or the Big 12
December 1st, 2007 at 10:59 pm
Where are the geniuses now who say we don’t need a playoff?
Maroons.

December 1st, 2007 at 11:01 pm
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
December 1st, 2007 at 11:07 pm
Musberger and Herbie, company men indeed.
December 1st, 2007 at 11:08 pm
USC can suck my ass…after winning Navy (-14) and Va Teach (-4.5) all I need was for Mel Kiper’s #1 team to beat a shitty UCLA squad by 20 and they couldn’t even do that
December 1st, 2007 at 11:36 pm
I simply can’t believe West Virgina lost to Pittsburgh! That is an epic loss. I feel bad for the WVU fans.
I’m actually from Ohio, and I admit I’m pretty much a bandwagon Ohio State fan. I’m not crazy like the other Buckeye fans, but since I’m an Ohioan I root fro them.
Anyway, they are not a great team, and I can understand people being upset seeing them in the title game. But no one else is great this year either.
LSU, West Virginia, Missouri, Oklahoma…you all blew your chance! Unbelievably, one of those teams who blew it will probably get another chance.
I see Ohio State vs. LSU….Georgia getting in would be a disgrace.
December 1st, 2007 at 11:38 pm
I’m pretty surprise Pitt held on considering the Big East officials were doing everything in their power to give WVU that game…two shady holding calls in the second half and a no-call on a Mountaineer PI call, I wanted WVU to win just to make the National Title game more entertaining but after that bullshit I started rooting for Pitt and Wanny’s moustache
December 1st, 2007 at 11:45 pm
Herbie wasn’t the ony one predicting that Miles would take the UM job. Just wait and see — he’ll pull a Saban and make his announcement after their bowl game. He’s only keeping LSU fans and players on the hook until then. He’d be a fool to not take the job. Why else would he list UM as the only team in his contract clause at LSU?
December 1st, 2007 at 11:48 pm
What is up with all the anti-Ohio State crap? How can you not put them in the game? They won their conference and lost one game by a touchdown. Until there is a playoff system, there will always be uncertainty. Until then, you go with the best thing you have.
Bottom line: Buckeyes are in the title game again!
December 2nd, 2007 at 12:46 am
Welcome to the Terrordome. Let’s go through the list:
1. Ohio State – Only 1 loss. They’re in.
2. LSU – 2 losses, to ranked Kentucky and Arkansas. Both in Triple OT. Won SEC.
3. USC – 2 losses to Stanford and ranked Oregon. Won PAC-10.
4. Oklahoma – 2 losses, to Colorado and Texas Tech (neither ranked). Won Big XII.
5. Georgia – 2 losses, to South Carolina and Tennessee (neither ranked). Did not win conference.
6. West Virginia – 2 losses, to ranked South Florida and Pitt. Won Big East.
7. Virginia Tech – 2 losses to ranked LSU and ranked BC. Won ACC.
8. Kansas – 1 loss to ranked Missouri. Did not win conference.
9. Missouri – 2 losses, both to ranked Oklahoma. Did not win conference.
So…who ya got?
It’s almost OSU v LSU by default.
December 2nd, 2007 at 12:55 am
If USC gets in, I boycott.
It has to be OSU-VTech.
December 2nd, 2007 at 1:02 am
It can’t be VaTech over LSU.
LSU 44 Va Tech 7
SOS: LSU 26 VaTech 45(sagarin)
Record vs. Top 30: LSU 3-22, VaTech 1-2
VS. Top 10: LSU 2-0, VaTech 0-1.
Conference Championship relevance: SEC better than ACC.
The whole thing is a mess. USC, OU, WVU, LSU and even Mizzou and Kansas have claims. But you can’t place Kansas or Mizzou ahead of OU.
December 2nd, 2007 at 1:03 am
The LSU record vs. Top 30 should be 3-2.
December 2nd, 2007 at 1:17 am
i’m pulling hard for va. tech….they are a much different team then the one that was blown out by LSU in week 2, but I will understand if another team is picked. OSU still has no business being in the game….what kind of message does that send…play a triple cupcake out of conference and you can get to the title game..that’s just wrong…
December 2nd, 2007 at 2:35 am
As Michigan fans thank god that they don’t have another 5 years of suck. Smart move LSU, enjoy your garbage coach.
December 2nd, 2007 at 2:39 am
Late breaking news from the west coast (since it seems I’m the only one in the PDT that reads this blog)…Hawaii vs. Ohio State in the BCS Championship game. (Actually its UW 28 UH 21 4th QTR) But the entire discussion is ridiculous. FOX will choose. We will suffer.
USC vs. LSU should be in the championship
December 2nd, 2007 at 2:40 am
p.s.-centering makes it more dramatic
December 2nd, 2007 at 3:33 am
How will FOX choose? They have no control over the 200 human voters or the six computer rankings.
Here are the schedule strengths of the “contenders”:
No losses:
Hawai’i, 119
One loss:
Ohio State, 48
Kansas, 82
Two losses:
LSU, 8
Va. Tech, 10
Missouri, 14
Oklahoma, 27
Georgia, 29
WVU, 29
ASU, 44
BYU, 63
USC, 65
Boise, 115
Hawai’i and Kansas are out of consideration because the schedule strength is so poor. So is Virginia Tech because LSU already beat them. Missouri can’t get in ahead of Oklahoma. Georgia didn’t win its division (albeit because of a tiebreaker, and they never got their shot at LSU). WVU, ASU, USC, BYU, BSU: no chance with 5 2-loss teams with better schedule strength ahead of you.
So who does that leave us with: Ohio State, LSU and Oklahoma. LSU should be automatic: one more loss than OSU, but 40 spots better in SOS. Is 2 losses against the #27 schedule better then 1 loss against the #48 schedule? Beats me. If you held a gun to my head:
1) LSU
2) Oklahoma
3) Ohio State
4) Virginia Tech
5) Missouri
6) Georgia
7) West Virginia
December 2nd, 2007 at 9:40 am
BCS National Title Game — I say it should be Ohio State vs. LSU! What say you people?
December 2nd, 2007 at 10:14 am
Replac should with wlll and I agree.
December 2nd, 2007 at 1:44 pm
FOX chooses everything….including our president.
December 2nd, 2007 at 6:17 pm
You had to like Kirk Herbstreit back tracking, what a idiot! He should do radio with Cowturd!
December 2nd, 2007 at 6:19 pm
Notre Dame and Duke in the title game?
