Stephen A. Smith, a Columnist … Again?
ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings December 3rd. 2007, 5:06pm
Hope this doesn’t make you regurgitate your lunch all over the office, but we’re hearing that ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith (don’t call him Screamin’ A!) is lobbying Bristol brass for a column in ESPN the Magazine - and it looks like he’s about to win. Sources say that Smith, who decided he would rather quit the Philly Inquirer than accept a demotion from columnist to reporter, is going to begin writing a front-of-the-book column for the Magazine. By re-establishing himself as a columnist, sources say, Smith hopes to regain some of the credibility he lost when his TV show tanked and he was clowned at the NBA draft (ok, that last part is a joke). Smith, who back in the 1990s was a pretty good columnist (especially on the NBA), unfortunately got wrapped up in becoming a ‘personality’ at ESPN, and the quality of his work in Philly fell off considerably. Also, he famously mailed in a column via Blackberry, which did nothing to enhance his image.

The man is a clown — can’t he just get a column covering the Chinese baksetball league, in China? Yes, back in the day he wrote quality NBA material in the Inquirer, and back in the 1980s, Joe Montana was a great quarterback. Screamin A is like the Rick Vaughn character in Major League 2, except he will never come back…

And yet the man makes ~ $800k/year.
I hate my life.

$800,000? Per year? I’m going to go punch myself in the balls.

He comes on First & 10 sometimes with Skip Bayless and yaks up a storm. I’d like to see Bayless on vacation and Smith paired with Drew Rosenhaus. Obnoxious screamers deserve one another!

not surprising at all. the only thing mildly surprising is that he hasn’t been a columnist for the mag before. probably because of his previous newspaper gig.

I’ve said it before. He’s like Kathy Griffin. Nobody likes them. But The Powers That Be are going to shove them down our throat and give them opportunity after opportunity after opportunity until we just give in.

not to sound like a total racist, but why when it comes to commentators does ESPN seem to want to get rid of the smart black opinionated columnists and prop up the dumb ones.
Screamin A over David Aldridge
Ralph Wiley would have been fired if he hadn’t died, and replaced with Scoop Jackson.
thank god we get Jemele Hill “ridin wit’” an NBA star instead of Bomani Jones

If it takes him away from his “Hour of Power” on ESPN radio, I’m all for him getting the gig.

I like to think Ralph Wiley transcended all of that.

I had the opportunity to listen to him the other day speaking about Andy Reid and the guy actually made sense. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut, once in a while.
