Brett Favre is SI’s Sportsman of the Year
Uncategorized December 4th. 2007, 11:25am
This isn’t the Heisman, so we won’t see how the voting panned out … but unlike last year, when Roger Federer appeared like a logical choice over winner Dwyane Wade, Favre seems, at least to us, like a fine selection. At least the magazine didn’t cop-out and go with the Colorado Rockies – like it did in 2004 with the Boston Red Sox.
Who else may have been considered? We’ll just toss a few names out there, just to generate a discussion … A-Rod (extraordinary season) … Tony Dungy (finally, a title) … Billy Donovan (back-to-back titles) and Roger Federer (three Grand Slams and a runner-up). Oh, and we have to throw Barry Bonds into the mix, because he did, after all, break one of the most hallowed records in sports.

The third or fourth best QB on the third or fourth best team in the NFL . . . and this makes him “sportsman” of the year how?
Federer is the choice here, and I don’t even like tennis.

Just to toss a few more names out there…
Peyton (the QB who actually *won* the Super Bowl)
Tom Brady (the QB who will probably win this year’s SB)
Tim Duncan
Josh Beckett / David Ortiz

In Sports Illustrated for Women, Deanne Favre was named Sportswomen of life and the Favres have been nominated for Nobel Peace Prize because they are so amazing.

As a Packer fan I obviously have no problem with this…after all the shit he’s taken from people saying he should have quit years ago it actually is a good story regarding his success (although the media beating it to death makes it less enjoyable)
Another name would be Bill Belichick since good or bad no one in sports has really generated more stories or reaction than him (kinda like how Time’s Man of the Year used to be the most important person, not the best so I think Hitler won it one year)

TBL, did Cowherd hijack your server again or something?

Did I just see the first ever Bill Belichick/Hitler comparison? Yikes.

Roger Federer shouldn’t be allowed to compete in awards like this, since he’s pretty much the tennis equivalent of Tiger Woods, minus a slump period.

Clearly Tebow deserves sportsman of the year, 20 rushing and passing TDs!!!!!!!
TBL whatever happened to not referring to steroid users by their name? This is what is wrong with bloggers, no integrity or respect for journalism. You better go get some training from Screamin’ A.

great choice for sportsman of the year
after all the talks off him retiring and complaining about his young team in the off season to him now wanting to come back and play for possibly two more years, that is inspiring to us all in different ways
he is playing the best he has in a long time and hopefully will continue with the bum elbow
at least he was honest and reponsive to his allegations of pills and the role of his addiction in his life
he has bounced back from tribulations and is now triumphent this year all over again

Here’s who I voted for:

Whoops…did I make a Bill Conlin blunder with the Hitler remark (my point was that the “Man of the Year” used to be for most influential, not most admirable and in that regard Belichick could have won)

What the hell is Brett Fav-ra doing here?

Ok, TBL, I’m cool with Federer, but A-Rod!?!? What? Isn’t he the exact opposite of sportsman of the year? He puts up good numbers, accomplishes nothing, and then pimps himself for more money. Also, Dungy and Donovan are coaches. Shouldn’t sportsman of the year go to, you know, someone who plays sports? I know a coach has won it a time or two in the past, but for a little more than winning the title.
As for Belichick: I take back my A-Rod statement. Belichick should be the last person considered for this award. He is the opposite of a good sports, and certainly a good sportsman. Come on.

@TBL: What is the over under on Internal 500 errors today? Where can I make my sizable $1 donation for improved hosting?

I don’t know about any of these candidates. One stands out above all these named here:

But is George Martin a gunslinger? Can you tell how much fun he’s having out there?

Tommyp, great link. TBL, shouldn’t you be finding these things?!

It’s good to see that the media is finally giving Favre some publicity.

Why does it seem that every year SI’s Sportsman is a current athlete/coach? I would be all for SI reevaluating its standards for this award. The first thing it should do is define what a sportsman is, and go from there, as many of us have different ideas about what it should be.

Nathan Jones should be SI SOTY….I almost pissed myself when Favre started reverting to his old ways in Irving. Go Cowboys.
