Well, the Detroit Tigers Sure Made a Splash
Uncategorized December 5th. 2007, 11:07am
Pennants aren’t won in December … but geez. What an act of generosity by the Marlins! Everyone’s down on Dontrelle (we think the Tigers just bought the former ROY and Cy Young runner-up very low), and loves the tubby Cabrera, but good luck finding somebody that doesn’t think this team is playoff-bound. One year removed from the World Series, the Tigers just added one of the best young hitters in baseball. It was a move that, in the AL Central, screamed, ‘Rook to King. Check.’ Your move, Indians.Â
We won’t go as far to proclaim the Tigers favorites in the AL, but only because pitching still rules in the postseason. Just a reminder: the best offense in baseball last year (Yankees) got shut down by a solid but not spectacular pitching staff (Indians). This is not to say the trio of Verlander-Bonderman-Willis is chopped liver … but it’s not quite Beckett-Schilling-Dice K. So we’ll hold off the coronation for now … but we don’t expect anything less than 95 wins. (Can everyone please stop saying the Tigers ‘mortgaged the future?’ Here’s how the system works – the big spenders will always have a shot at the best prospects … because the small market teams can’t/won’t pay them. Yes, the Tigers just lost a ton of prospects, but in 4-5 years – when the current offense will need updating, some young kids, somewhere, will be looking to get traded from Oakland or Florida or Tampa Bay because owners there don’t want to pay.)
Maybin (whom we love) and Miller should consider the trade to Florida like going to college. They’ll be cash-strapped for a few years, but live in South Beach, where they’ll get to party with the upperclassmen (D Wade, Shaq). And then in 3-4 years, they’ll be off to the real world (ie – a team that spends cash), where real money will be theirs. Enjoy the cafeteria food, kids!
A couple folks sent us a link to Sports Review Magazine, which may or may not have broken the story Tuesday morning.

It’s funny, judging from what people have been saying over the last couple of weeks, you would think Miguel Cabrera was pushing 4 bills…he’s not that fat. Oh, and the rest of the AL Central just shit their pants.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:15 am
As a Twins Fan, this is just icing on the cake made of shit.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:16 am
magglio from michigan probably creamed his pants when he heard about this
still wont help them win it all
GO YANKEES

We are quite happy here in Michigan, let me tell you. Dombrowski gave up a lot – a ton. But, they are built to win in 2008, so I say … go for it.
Miller and/or Maybin could end up being really good, but the Tigers weren’t waiting around for them. If they do end up panning out, then the Marlins will be trading them in a few years and maybe the Tigers can get them back for the next crop of young prospects.
I love it. Can’t wait for opening day.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:20 am
Now, if we could just get the Lions to hire Dombrowski and FIRE MILLEN…
December 5th, 2007 at 11:22 am
Getting Miggy is great, but I’d be wary of Dontrelle Willis. At least something interesting actually happened so far this offseason!
December 5th, 2007 at 11:23 am
irishmafia,
It’s OK, you still have Mr. August, A-Rod.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:24 am
Marlins payroll for next year will be less than 10 million dollars. TOTAL.
I think Rodney Farva is sitting somewhere contemplating on weather or not he should buy the Marlins, being that he cant buy the cleveland cavaliers
December 5th, 2007 at 11:29 am
consider my pants shat…there goes my summer. thanks florida, first you take our 97 WS, then you take our 2006 NC, our 2007 bball NC, and then you dump one of the most talented hitters in baseball onto our chief rival in exchange for a bunch of guys who they didn’t need to play anyways.
Thanks…salary floor/cap sounds awfully nice around now.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:31 am
This news made the fact that Michigans next head coach will be Ferentz a little less vomit inducing. I am ecstatic to see this Tigers team put up 1927 Yankees numbers… probably not, but still, this should be the best offensive line-up since the big red machine. The only thing I am not excited to see are the bandwagon “cool new thing” fans that will be at CoPa this year, ala the 2004 Pistons… but I am excited to say the least. Now just imagine if that deal for Kobe would have gone through… Oh and fuck the Lions.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:34 am
@ spencer 096
Did you forget you sold your souls to the devil with that 2002 NCAA NC? You still owe Miami in my opinion ha ha ha.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:37 am
I’m very wary of Willis. He’ll be facing some more potent offensive lineups – we’ll see how he fares. My guess – out of the gate hot, but by the second time the teams see him, he’ll come back down to earth.
Cabrera is the real deal. And he is automatically the obligatory fat kid on the team – every team needs one.
In the end, I actually see it as a good deal for the Marlins, the years they inherit on the rookie deals will bring some excitement to the team.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:42 am
How about this for the Tigers 2008 opening day lineup. I really think that this is the year they drop Granderson in the order and have Polanco lead-off. Otherwise you have Cabrera or Guillen hitting 6th.
Polanco
Cabrera
Sheffield
Magglio
Guillen
Granderson
Renteria
Thames/Jones
Pudge

two bad things about this trade
1 – the marlins who bring in roughly 60 million before a ticket is even sold – i.e. revenue sharing, tv/radio rights, etc. will now have a payroll of under 10 million. which is nuts and should be outlawed
2 – dontrelle with his 5.17 ERA is going to get lit up in the AL.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:47 am
As a White Sox fan, just let me say that this deal has led me to purchase a hand gun and a bottle of whiskey. Also, the Tigers can go teabag themselves.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:47 am
Chelsea, Cabrera in the 2-hole? It goes like this:
Granderson
Renteria
Cabrera
Magglio
Sheff
Guillen
IROD
Jones/Thames
Polanco
December 5th, 2007 at 11:51 am
This is another reason the Twins need to keep Santana.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:52 am
Don’t worry, the Indians will follow the lead of the Cavs and, um, well, mmmm….
December 5th, 2007 at 11:54 am
No way Polanco is batting 9th. He is the best all-around hitter they have on the team.
I could see Cabrera hitting third and moving Sheff down, but remember that Leyland likes having a guy with power in the 2 hole. He put Thames there a number of times last year, that’s why I was guessing on Cabrera hitting 3rd.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:56 am
I am dumbfounded that someone hasn’t tried to take the Marlins away from Loria. Is he trying to sabotage the team to get them to move, like that piece of shit that owns the Seattle Supersonics? Major League the movie was not as laughable as this, and at least Margaret Whitton was pleasant to look at back in the day. Major League Baseball ran the Expos better than this. What a disgrace.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:57 am
Time to contract the Marlins already. Why should they have a team? No one goes to the games (for obvious reasons) and any time they get a good player they get rid of them.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:59 am
Bonderman isn’t a good pitcher, why is he mentioned in the same breath as Verlander, even Willis?
December 5th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
I need to stop arguing so much about insignificant baseball things, but…
Polanco is not their best all-around hitter. Check the numbers on what Granderson did last year-20+ doubles, triples, and HR’s. Magglio’s numbers were obscene, and Cabrera is a pretty damn good hitter, too.
I’m not saying they shouldn’t move Granderson down in the lineup and lead-off Polanco. I’m just saying they won’t.
December 5th, 2007 at 12:03 pm
I am tired of people complaining that small market teams don’t stand a chance with the big fish and all of this no salaray cap crying. The small market teams choose not to compete. Oakland-considers this a business and trades their talent away for something in return. Florida-has traded away 2 world championship teams, and are now left with Hanley Rameriz. Minnesota-Richest owner in baseball, new stadium, former Cy Young, MVP, and batting champ on the team, and they still complain. Detroit is clearly the favorite to win the series. I take the Tigers pitching over Boston any day.
December 5th, 2007 at 12:08 pm
NSR – I agree thats the line up. There has been reports that Cabrera has been working out and has lost 15lbs – we’ll see. Being in FL I painfully catch a lot of the Marlins games and the only reason I watch some is to see him hit. He’s like a younger ManRam – dude can hit.
December 5th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
This lineup could bat in 1000 runs.
They did give up a gem in Maybin, but they’re getting one in return in Cabrera. And Miller showed some flashes, but his last few outings weren’t too great. And the Tigers still might not be done. Brandon Inge, last year’s third baseman, seemingly has no spot on the roster right now. They still need to get a decent (not Todd Jones) reliever.
December 5th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
Magglio and Cabrera hitting back to back just made every AL Central pitcher wet the bed last night.
I don’t think Florida’s getting entirely shafted here… they’re going to love Maybin, he’s a freak. I never got the hype about Andrew Miller, but Maybin makes this deal.
December 5th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
I do believe “rook to king” is not an actual chess move, unless you put a number in front of “king”.

Superbus – MLB will never approach anything close to “taking the marlins away from Loria.” He and Selig are boys. Why do you think it was so easy for him self the Expos and buy the Marlins in the span of half a year? Remember:
Selig would never go against Loria, because much like Starbury has th goods on Isaiah, Lorias got it on Selig.
It’s exhausting being a Marlins fan.
December 5th, 2007 at 12:40 pm
Willis sucks and is barely a 5th starter in the AL as of right now. Unless he finds some mojo and fools people with his delivery again, Miller is going to out pitch him significantly. But Cabrera makes up for that deficiency and then some. Maybin fell in some scouts eyes this year, so take that FWIW.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
“we’ll hold off the coronation for now ”
Perfect chance for Denny Green reference, and you blew it.
WC has Crowned Their Asses!
December 5th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
i think scott linebrink and orlando cabrera will have something to say about that.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:04 pm
It was a move that, in the AL Central, screamed, ‘Rook to King. Check.’
::wince::
December 5th, 2007 at 1:15 pm
Ummm…Placido Polanco is the best all around hitter on the Tigers? He hit nine HRs last year. You know power is part of the all around game, correct?
Don’t get me wrong, Placido is good, but here are hitters now on the Tigers better than he is.
Miguel Cabrera
Magglio Ordonez
Curtis Granderson
Gary Sheffield
Edgar Renteria
December 5th, 2007 at 1:17 pm
Gotta disagree here. Willis doesn’t suck. Anyone who nearly wins a Cy Young and is an All-Star doesn’t suck. Sorry. I do agree he needs to recapture that mojo and he might with a change of scenery and Jim Leyland straightening him out. And Miller won’t outpitch him this year. Miller wasn’t even going to make the Tigers’ Opening Day roster and will be lucky to get on Florida’s. He’s raw and he’s got to get his head straight.
Also, Polanco hits for the best average (.341) and strikes out the least (30Ks in 587 ABs!!). He’s a good No. 2 guy. Granderson should continue to leadoff.
I cannot wait until baseball season. Damn, I love my Tigers.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:18 pm
Oops. Second-to-best average behind My Man Magglio (.363).
December 5th, 2007 at 1:20 pm
Damnit, I should have responded all in one post. This is three in like 5 minutes for me.
Anyway, Bondo is a good pitcher. He wasn’t in the second half last season, but that was because he was hurt. He pinched a nerve in his right elbow and didn’t tell anyone until he was like 1-7 with a ballooned ERA by late August. He was an idiot for trying to play through the pain without telling anyone and it actually hurt him and the team. But he was a competative idiot.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:20 pm
Dont shit on Willis just yet. He’s had a rough couple of years, but the bitter cold air of Detroit will keep balls in the park better than Miami.
Oh, by the way:
POLANCO WAS THIRD IN THE ENTIRE MAJOR LEAGUE WITH A .341 BATTING AVERAGE
How dare you bat him 9th ?
December 5th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
lozo, I think the Tigers are praying for Mr. Linebrink to appear against them many, many times.
1. They are into the bullpen.
2. Linebrink is another reliever who was mildly successful getting outs against the NL West, the AAA division of the NL. (NL Central being AA.)
December 5th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
P.S. You go NDub.
See you at the Copa.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
Placido fits much better in the 2 spot than Renteria. Renteria makes a good 6 hitter. Would much rather have a guy that struck out 30 times in the 2 spot. That is a no brainer to put him there, he puts the ball in play.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Esteban Loaiza? Matt Clement? Derek Lowe?
Guys can have good seasons. Of those three, Lowe is clearly a solid 2/3 in his prime. Willis probably a 3AL/2NL in his prime. He’s lost something and isn’t at that stage anymore. I stick by him being a #5 starter in the AL.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
Cameron Maybin went to high school next to where I lived in Asheville, NC. He’s going to be something very special. He’s also Rashad McCant’s cousin.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Yeah, Willis’s ability to hit won’t help him at all in the AL. He’s a fifth starter in the AL right now.
How about ‘Rook to King-1 check’, although, what the Indians were doing with their king still sitting on an open King-file is beyond me…
December 5th, 2007 at 1:57 pm
If the Red Sox get Santana this whole discussion is pointless
December 5th, 2007 at 4:32 pm
willis indeed sucks right now. unless he’s pitching against the mets, then he’s an ace again. he could end up getting rocked pretty ugly in the AL.
December 5th, 2007 at 6:51 pm
Detroit is pretty favorable, but “Joe Robbie” is huge! So the ballpark conversion factor holds no weight in defending Willis.
December 5th, 2007 at 6:54 pm
He doesn’t suck. There’s a different between sucking and struggling or having a bad 1 1/2 years. Kip Wells sucks. Kyle Farnsworth sucks. Willis does not.
Why can’t anyone give Willis, a former All-Star and runner-up in the Cy Young, a chance at revitalization in Detroit? Under Jim Leyland, nonetheless. And in a new environment. I’m not opining for him to a be a No. 1 or No. 2, but he could be No. 3 in Detroit. Certainly some work needs to be done, but that guy doesn’t suck.
December 5th, 2007 at 8:22 pm
I think we just use “suck” because he’s “hyped”. If you have a nickname, you better be more than a #5 starter. But, you’re right; if you’re a starting pitcher in the major leagues, you certainly don’t suck.
December 5th, 2007 at 10:04 pm
OK, how is the “irishmafia” still allowed to post anything, what a jackass…
