So Wait … Is Les Miles Staying or Going?
Uncategorized December 5th. 2007, 12:18pm
Hmmm. So the new Les Miles deal to keep him at LSU has been put on “hold.” Are we going to owe Kirk Herbstreit an apology? (Herbie went on WDFN in Detroit Monday and said he’s done reporting.) Here’s what we’re puzzled with: LSU has 30-some days before the National Championship. What, Les can’t take one afternoon and hammer out this deal?
Here’s a juicy Herbstreit rumor floating around the LSU campus about how Herbie got his “scoop”: the former OSU quarterback was the victim of a prank phone call from someone impersonating Desmond Howard, claiming that Miles-to-Michigan was a done deal. We find this incredibly hard to believe, but it’s interesting as hell.

Michigan fans should pray this guy resigns with LSU.

Yeah Miles is an ass, he seems to think he’s the shit

If Michigan does not hire anybody before 1/7/2008 and LSU beats OSU, book it that he is coming home to Ann Arbor.
I doubt that OSU beating LSU will effect Michigan’s interest, but it would effect the fan perception of whether Miles will be successful.

Agreed that Miles thinks he’s the shit. He coached a mediocre Okie State team before inheriting a Stacked team from Saban and suddenly he’s a genius for going 11-2 this year. Remember he lost to a decent Kentucky team and Arkansas, no studs though. Very easily could have been 9-4.
That being said, who didn’t see this coming. As soon as ESPN flashed that the deal wasn’t signed yet I immediately thought of Billy Gillispie at A&M last year. Agreed to it, never signed it, now he’s at Kentucky.

I can’t imagine going from coaching in the SEC to coaching in the Big Ten… I’d half expect Miles to hang himself at halftime during a game because NOTHING WAS HAPPENING. Drove me crazy when I lived in Pennsylvania and I always had to watch another crappy Big Ten game instead of getting to watch real football (namely, that played anywhere outside the Big Ten).
I am just so full of hate.

Didn’t Gillispie never sign his Kentucky contract?

Thats what happens when Desmond Howard is your source

What a class act Tom Osborne is for letting Bo Pelini coach in the NC game. From what I hear the LSU fans hate Pelini. Your loss and the Huskers gain.

By your logic, xv43, Miles should WANT to coach in the Big Ten since the teams are not as good, therefore he should be able to dominate, right??
December 5th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
Doesn’t Miles have a clause in his contract that kicks in big money if he wins a national championship? Maybe that’s the reason to wait until after bowl season, since the original agreement happened before LSU got into the BCS Championship.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
What I mean is, maybe LSU is going to pay him more if he wins.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
1. Don’t ask him about it. He’s busy.
2. He’s going to pull a Saban clearly. LSU isn’t the money machine that Michigan is.
3. Have a great day.

THIS GUY has all you need to know. Miles will not come to Michigan because Michigan apparently (with thier actions) didn’t want him. I am not real high on Miles, but he seems quite a bit like BO in that he is a prick when he needs to be. I just want to know, if not Miles then who? Really? Ferentz or Hoke? I hate to think we can’t make any bigger splash than that.

Why would Desmond Howard need to call Herbie when they are on set together?
December 5th, 2007 at 1:49 pm
KC – from what I understand, Howard called Herbstreit earlier in the week (when they weren’t at the Gameday site), and Herbstreit was pressured to come out with it Saturday.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
KC, Desmond was reporting from Hawai’i on Saturday morning, IIRC.
December 5th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
I still think he’s going to Mich. Why have all of these other colleges (Neb, TexAM…) already have new coaches, but the best job available remains unfilled, hmmmmm. Nothing he has said is definite, at no point in time did the say “I am not going to Michigan.” The longer Mich has no coach, the louder the rumors will get.
I’m not that impressed by him. He can barely get out complete sentences and not sure that he would fit at “nose in the air/sense of superiority” Michigan.
December 5th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
If Michigan ends up with Ferentz I will refuse to watch any games until he proves that he is anything but mediocre
December 5th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
It makes no sense that Howard would call Herbie and Herbie is the one “pressured” to go to air with it. They are both ESPN employees. If Howard (or a fake Howard) was Herbie’s source, then ESPN would have pressured Desmond to air the information.
If this is, in fact, what happened, then Herbstreit is a bigger moron than any of us thought.

Thanks!

Did Ferentz lose his shine about 3 years ago? He can’t even beat Iowa St with superior talent. How the hell is going to beat Ohio St.?
Maybe they’ll hire Barry Switzer so I won’t have to listen to him durning Fox’s BCS coverage.

Glass Yard, I’m not saying the SEC is so much better than the Big Ten that any half-assed coach from the SEC could win it, I am saying that Big Ten games are about as much fun to watch as living through the Spanish Inquisition must have been.

TBL, Miles is staying at LSU. You can book it. The holdup on the contract is that it has to be approved by the Board of Supervisors. This will happen tomorrow. Once it is approved, all parties will sign(Miles, Chancellor, AD). This will be put to bed by the beginning of next week. It is an extension of his current contract through 2012 with a university option for an additional two years. The pay will be between 2.6 to 3.4 million based on the outcome of the NC game.

The article you referenced was published yesterday morning. Since it came out, LSU’s chancellor has come out with the information above. It can be found on http://www.2theadvocate.com or http://www.lsusports.net
