MLB Cheaters Outed by Mitchell: Clemens, Pettitte Among Them
Mitchell Report December 13th. 2007, 2:13pm
George Mitchell has spoken - well, he’s still speaking - but we just went through that 300-page monster and quickly jotted down names we recognized (there were plenty we had never heard of). Albert Pujols is NOT on the list, and we didn’t see Johnny Damon, either. It’s pretty neat to see the list, but there aren’t any shockers. We made a few pithy comments, feel free to laugh or not.
(Brief aside: Strangely, this is the most interested we’ve been about baseball in a long, long time.)
Andy Pettite
Roger Clemens
Barry Bonds
Bobby Estalella
Jason Giambi
Miguel Tejada
Eric Gagne (can you say career over?)
Jeremy Giambi
Benito Santiago
Gary Sheffield
Randy Velarde
Lenny Dykstra
Jay Gibbons
Troy Glaus
Denny Neagle
Ron Villone
Ryan Franklin
Mike Stanton
Paul Lo Duca (bet the Nationals are thrilled!)
Fernando Vina
Kevin Brown (there’s a shock!)
Matt Herges
Chris Donnels
Todd Pratt
Kevin Young
Mike Lansing
Larry Bigbie

Todd Hundley (told ya!)
Mark Carreon
Hal Morris
Matt Franco
Rondell White
Jose Canseco
Chuck Knoblauch
Gregg Zaun
David Justice (will it hurt his HOF chances?)
F.P. Santangelo (ha!)

On an aside, I also find it interesting that Scott Boras announced that ARod was leaving the Yankees on the night of the deciding game of the World Series. Then they announced that they had reached a deal on the day of the Barry Bonds indictment. And now they announced they signed it on the day of the Mitchell Report.
Always “unfortunate” timing with the announcements, don’t you think?

So Clemens is a yes?
December 13th, 2007 at 2:25 pm
Please . . . please . . . please let Fernando Vina be in studio as an “analyst” for this thing.

Nice.
No Piazza.
….and that lowlife Clemens is on there…….
Today’s a good day.

I will say shame on you for running that report earlier. Pujols not mentioned anywhere on this list. Admitting you were a pretentious asshole? Doubtful.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:28 pm
According to, *ahem*, other blogs, some of these people mentioned are CLEARED in the report. So just because there name is in it, they shouldn’t be automatically labeled a user.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:28 pm
their, damn it.

“McNamee injected Clemens approximately four times in the buttocks over
a several-week period with needles that Clemens provided. Each incident took place in Clemens’s apartment at the SkyDome.” - Page 217/409
Old Roger Dodger likes it in the ass. Priceless.

@cardzfan24
OK, just because you are not on this list does not mean you are not guilty, you asshole.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:33 pm
Paul Lo Duca must be absolutely jacked if he made the list twice. Obviously, no Pirates made this list (our players clearly stink so bad that there is no way any of them are on the juice) and the former Pirates clearly started after we had them (Bonds), weren’t taking them effectively when we did have them (Neagle, Matthews) or were so old the ‘roids didn’t matter (Santiago).
December 13th, 2007 at 2:36 pm
So no Pudge, huh?
December 13th, 2007 at 2:41 pm
This list is a joke, no Brady Anderson no Brett Boone, come on those two really made a mockery of the whole steroid issue. then you get Mud Selig talking about a crisis in baseball. This whole deal if a joke.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:41 pm
I started reading a little bit of the Report. If your name is in it I don’t think it automatically means you used it. There are specific sections though dedicated to certain players. The Clemens thing is interesting to read and how much he did use it.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:44 pm
tony larussa’s name is all over this report. it seems half of the outed players had some connection to him.
one part says (an unnamed player) on the cardinals was a major supplier, per the immortal larry bigbie.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
When does the press conference to introduce Miguel Tejada as the new shortstop for the Astros start?
December 13th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
Chuck Knoblauch being on this list explains all those throwing errors.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
Hey, don’t forget Nook Logan. His power numbers were outrageous.
Oops, wrong Nook Logan.
Pudge will be back to his normal playing weight next season now that the storm cloud has passed.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
Ohhhh my Gawd….This is the most shocking report eva…..in he history of reports I have never seen such a thing….Roger Clemens is standing is George’s box greeting the people with a needle sticking out of his ass….unbelievable

Well this is clearly a comprehensive list of all players that have used performance enhancing drugs, so we can all move along now.
At the end of the day this report WILL inspire kids not to use PEDs because 90% of the players on this list suck.
December 13th, 2007 at 3:01 pm
Way to get out ahead of the issue and state Fernando Vina’s drug use is in the report, ESPN. Good job. Never let anyone out spin the spin doctors.
December 13th, 2007 at 3:07 pm
Mike and the Mad Dog here in NY just read the details about Clemens and it’s AWESOME. It details him taking steriods on several different occasions. Wave goodbye to the HOF Roger……
December 13th, 2007 at 3:14 pm
Batman, no way. Clemens will be a Hall of Famer regardless. So will Bonds.
December 13th, 2007 at 3:18 pm
Mark Whiten had the 4 HR, 12 RBI game for the Cards around ‘93.
December 13th, 2007 at 3:22 pm
Roethlishotdog - How could you not notice KY on the list? How can you call yourself a Pirates fan when you didn’t notice the biggest contract in franchise history…at the time.
December 13th, 2007 at 3:23 pm
I thought Glenallen Hill was best known (before now) for missing time because he smashed a plate-glass table in his sleep having a nightmare about spiders.
I’ve been wrong before.
Didn’t Mike Cameron have 4 homers & 10 RBIs before, too?
December 13th, 2007 at 3:30 pm
Magglio, f— off.
It is the height of hypocrisy for this blog to talk about how they are stubbornly uncorrupted and unbeholden and then to trash a player from a bullshit report an hour before the real thing came out.
Again, f— off.
December 13th, 2007 at 3:35 pm
Quite obviously you are sticking up for your little friend there in St. Louis… In reality this is an investigation stemming from TWO people and whoever they saw fit to snitch out. Apparently Fat Albert wasn’t on that list. The fact is that doesn’t make him guilty, nor does it make him innocent so please tighten up your tongue and for God’s sake gain a little perspective. In case you didn’t notice, there are many players who were not mentioned in the report who have giant red flags.
December 13th, 2007 at 3:49 pm
I don’t think Gagne’s career is over. The Brewers just signed him to a 1yr, $10mil deal, no doubt knowing about the upcoming report. Gagne’s in there for HGH, not ‘roids.
December 13th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
@ sjh42
I don’t see how he gets in at this point. With the level of detail that this report provides of his cheating, it’s going to be hard for anyone to vote him in at this point.
December 13th, 2007 at 4:21 pm
Maggs
Don’t you find it a tad odd that Gary Bennett is outed, a former teammate of Pujols, and not Pujols himself? If this guy had info on the two, which one would he rather give up?
And as far as red flags on players…this list really illustrates such things are extremely hit and miss. Pettite didn’t have a single physical red flag, he was outed by Grimsley. Clemens is different, he was pitching absurdly well into his 40s, and seemingly getting stronger as his career wore on, much like Bonds. A lot of these players sucked…so obviously even the non standouts were using in large numbers. If you think about it, those are the players with the most to gain. These guys on the fringe are fighting for an MLB check instead of a AAA check. Guys like Clemens and Pettite, Bonds and Tejada, they will have be at LEAST decent without these drugs. In many cases, they would still be exceptional.
Albert is a totally different story. This guy broke in as a masher and hasn’t stopped since he got in the show. Could he be using? Sure. Absolutely, but if they busted a nobody like Bennett from his team and didn’t get any dirt on them…its probably not there.
And the other valid points I made from this blog being pretentious still stand unrefuted.
December 13th, 2007 at 4:30 pm
@ Cardzfan
Then don’t read it and certainly don’t post on it.
December 13th, 2007 at 7:04 pm
@Batman:
Clemens is a lock. Period.
December 13th, 2007 at 7:15 pm
You’re dropping Ankiel from your keeper team because he took HGH to help his shoulder when he was a pitcher three years ago?
Sounds about right…
December 13th, 2007 at 7:19 pm
Larry Bigby? Surprised to see them going all the way back and outing the ALs first black player.
December 13th, 2007 at 7:48 pm
It’s not an outing, Dornoch. Everyone always pretty much knew that Larry Doby was black.
December 14th, 2007 at 1:45 am
Really? No interest in the ALCS, Sox winning WS, Cabrera trade, Rockies rise, Mets fall, A-Rod contract saga, Bonds overtaking Aaron, Buchholz no-hitter, etc., etc.
Eh, why do I waste my time on this site.
TBL … Not intelligent. Not entertaining.
December 14th, 2007 at 9:11 am
For the 4 homer 10 RBI game you mentioned for Glenallen Hill, perhaps you’re thinking about Mark “Big Hittin” Whiten?
And Glenallen Hill did hit a homer on top of an apartment building across from Wrigley. One would need to be on something to do that, or an aluminum bat.
