1 pm Games Recap: DOLPHINS WIN!!!! Jags Surprise Steelers, Patriots Barely Get by Jets
NFL December 16th. 2007, 4:29pm
Baltimore 16, Miami 22, OT: If we would have asked you Saturday who Greg Camarillo was, your response might have been … the USA Connect 4 champion? The fifth screenwriter on LOST? The President of Chili? He will now live in Dolphins lore – Camarillo caught a 64-yard TD pass in overtime from Cleo Lemon has Miami won its first game of the season. Troy Smith, last year’s Heisman Trophy winner, could have been the hero … if Matt Stover had nailed a 44-yarder in OT. He missed, and the Dolphins rejoiced. Then, Wayne Huizenga cried. Yes, really.
New York Jets 10, New England 20: Weird – inclement weather meant that the Patriots struggled to move the football. They scored just one touchdown. The Jets have the third worst rush defense in the NFL, and permitted Laurence Maroney to rush for 104 yards and a score. Good thing the Pats weren’t playing a real defense, or this one could have been their first loss. Brady was just 14-for-27 with a pick.
Jacksonville 29, Pittsburgh 22: Weird – inclement weather … and the Jaguars registered their most impressive win of the season. Big Ben and his soggy gloves were driving for the game-tying score, but Heath Miller came up inches short on a fourth down catch and the Jags held on. David Garrard threw for 197 yards and three TDs against the No. 1 defense in football, on the road. Indefatigable Fred Taylor rushed for 147 yards and a TD.
Green Bay 33, St. Louis 14: Close game for a half, before the Packers pulled away and easily covered. Steven Jackson had his best game of the season for the Rams, rushing for 143 yards, but once the Pack went up 27-13 midway through the third, Bulger was forced to pass, and Green Bay bum rushed the dude left and right. Four sacks and two picks. Favre had two scoring passes.
Seattle 10, Carolina 13: All the scoring came in the 4th quarter, and the Seahawks TD came with one second left. This against a team that had been crap all year? Man, if Hasselbeck has to take these kids on the road in January, it may not be pretty. Shaun Alexander had seven carries for 17 yards. Nobody cares what anyone on Carolina did, but Oregon State continued to have a significant impact on the NFL: Matt Moore quarterbacked the Panthers to victory.
Arizona 24, New Orleans 31: Goodbye, Cardinal playoff hopes. There’s always next year. Beef up the defense. Anywhere would be nice. Cards fell to 6-8, and the Saints improved to 7-7. Drew Brees passed for 315 yards and two TDs and Aaron Stecker rushed for two scores.
Buffalo 0, Cleveland 8: Looked like it might have been fun to play in this blinding snowstorm, right? No offensive touchdowns were scored, and nobody put anything on the scoreboard in the second half. Jamal Lewis rushed for 163 yards. The Browns (our Browns?) improved to 9-5 (!!) with a blanking of the Bills, locking up a playoff berth.
Tennessee 26, Kansas City 17: Vince Young and Roydell Williams connected twice for touchdowns as the Titans put on their rally hats and stormed back to capture the win. It helped that Brodie Croyle threw two second half interceptions.
Atlanta 3, Tampa Bay 37: Probably the roughest week in Falcons history culminates with an incredibly lopsided loss. Atlanta accumulated five first downs and QB Chris Redman was 4-for-15 for 34 yards and two INTs (including a pick six one minute into the game) . The good news is that they’re a loss closer to Darren McFadden, or a QB to help this moribund offense. Who wants to guess these are the first highlights shown on the NBC show tonight?

Well, the Saints have once again clawed themselves back to within inches of a playoff spot. That can only mean one thing. Put all your money on the Eagles next week. And seriously, why don’t any teams that play the Saints just pick on Jason David all afternoon? Sometimes I think these teams out-think themselves.

Your Browns???? There wasn’t anything in that preview that suggested you saw this coming other than a minor statement, so QUIT trying to act like you did.

Our stupid freaking CBS station in Detroit showed the Pittsburgh-Jacksonville game. There were only 2 early games I have a crap about – Pats-Jets and Dolphins-Ravens.
Why would any station without a local team playing, choose ANY game over showing the Patriots and their quest for history? Rooting for them or against them, pretty much all football fans are watching what they do. It is the most compelling story in years.

Or you could’ve turned on Fox 2 Detroit, which besides showing the unwatchable Green Bay-St. Louis game, obscured half the screen with a crawl telling people it stopped snowing and to go to their ‘Weather Chat Room’ to talk about the storm.

You ranked the Browns No. 25 in the preseason and they’re your team?
December 16th, 2007 at 5:58 pm
Well, sorry to be a dick, but what you got at noon in Detroit is probably more entertaining than what you’re getting right now.

That sure appeared to be David Garrard’s coming out party. He looks MILES ahead of where Leftwich was. If I had to rank the league’s best QBs, it would look something like: Brady, Manning, Romo, Favre, Roethlisberger… Garrard? This year he’s gotta be ahead of Palmer, Brees and Anderson.

Rick James – I could not stand watching the Brett Favre suck-fest for even 2 seconds.
jpg3553 – You are correct! The Lions will always be the Lions. They suck! What an absolute joke they have turned out to be.

Um, TBL, did you watch the Jets-Pats game? How can you imply that the Jets’ defense was to blame for the loss? The first Pats touchdown came on a 5-yard interception return. The second Pats touchdown came on a 1-yard run set up by a punt block that the Pats recovered at the Jets’ 3-yard line. How can you blame the Jets’ defense for any of that? The Jets’ defense was outstanding today, holding the Pats to 265 yards– 160 below their average– despite New England’s 7-minute time-of-possession advantage. It held a team that was supposedly going to put up 50 points to 13, and 7 of those were the direct result of the punt block that the defense had nothing to do with.

If Brian Billick isn’t fired after that debacle in South Flo-rida, I don’t know what else could get the offending “offensive” genius canned.

No love for Favre’s record breaking day?
December 16th, 2007 at 7:24 pm
Westbrook gives up scoring a touchdown and falls to the ground at the one, so the Eagles can run out the clock. Sure hope that doesn’t cost me in my fantasy playoffs.
December 16th, 2007 at 7:24 pm
Chelsea Chris – you expected your local affiliate to show you a game with 4 wins combined between the teams (Ravens-Dolphins) versus a game with two 9 win teams? Pats-Jets is realistic request though.
Dear Santa – for Christmas please send Pittsburgh fans a couple of OT’s who can pass block and a free safety who can defend the deep pass.
December 16th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
i just won my fantasy semi-final because Westbrook took that knee

@ s1rweeze: I don’t think you watched that Pittsburgh game closely. Garrard was ALL over the place. I recognize the shitty conditions and everything, but the only reason the Jags won that game was their running game treated Pittsburgh like they were the new guy in the prison shower. Fred Taylor and MJD 2.0 got all the hard yards while Garrard consistently killed them on third downs for most of the game. Garrard had 3 TD’s because of how close Taylor and MJD got him to the goal line.

Why would I want to watch the Sunday Night game when in Detroit the screen is almost half school closing info. Thanks for nothing.
@BraveSrRob: David Garrard did have a cool pimp hat on in the post-game press conference. Does that make up for almost costing the Jags the game?

Rick James and Chelsea—- I finally moved away from Detroit to Atlanta after 12 long years. The idiotic decisions as to which games they select is unbelievable…..it drove me to get Direct TV. Any football fan that doesn’t get the dish is nuts. 70+ HD channels and will have 100 by years end. Snow makes the dish go out once a year for 20 minutes…..it is no big deal.
Having every single football game is priceless guys….well actually about $200 per year but I would pay double.
December 16th, 2007 at 9:43 pm
@spidey: So very true, and we wouldn’t have to contend with the BTN vs. Comcast garbage anymore, either.
Side note: They did switch to the Baltimore-Miami game up here, after the game-winning score for the Dolphins. At least I saw every second of that Lions-Chargers game.
/no more grumbling about TV, I swear…today at least.
December 16th, 2007 at 9:56 pm
oops, bad link on the browns, think there is a better one…will find when i get home.
yes jets were good on d today…. but the pats offense looked bad against a team not known for its d…what happens against a good d in crap weather?
December 16th, 2007 at 10:26 pm
garrards coming out party? two of his three touchdowns the receiver was literally uncovered and he completed 51 percent of his passes and should have had at least two or three more picks. that is a running team first and foremost
December 16th, 2007 at 10:30 pm
Wow, Giants really getting worked at home. Just picked up the game in the third …
December 16th, 2007 at 10:42 pm
What happens when an opposing teams Offense has to play the Pats D in crap weather? Never forget the Jets score only three points if Hansen doesnt get a case of Butterfingers.
Kudos to the Jets though, they played really well and the option was cool to see.
December 16th, 2007 at 10:56 pm
The Ravens are just like an episode of the Maury show.
Just when you think you have the answer, prepare to get thrown for a loop.
December 16th, 2007 at 11:03 pm
Well, at least Billick already has the dreaded “vote of confidence.” I’m not saying that he wasn’t exactly what the Ravens needed seven years ago, but he’s pretty much the opposite of what they need now.
December 16th, 2007 at 11:15 pm
Sterlin – I’m just looking for holes in the Pats, that all. Nobody seems to mention the passing in bad weather factor … but it was pretty clear today that Moss and Welker can’t do their magic in crap weather. Not sure if San Diego could pull the upset, but Jacksonville and Indy will definitely have a chance. This is NOT to say either is better than the Pats … duh
December 17th, 2007 at 12:42 am
Regarding David Garrard: Come on, stick 75% of the other starting quarterbacks in the NFL in his place against Pittsburgh in the snow, against that pass rush, and they’ll fold like accordions. He’s pretty damn good.
December 17th, 2007 at 6:50 am
Stick any of the QB’s that you listed as being “behind” Garrard in there with that run game and they have the same numbers, if not better. While the conditions weren’t great, they were nothing compared to the Browns/Bills game. And they sure weren’t bad enough in the first half to justify the awful passing by Garrard.
December 17th, 2007 at 7:46 am
Go Bucs! Where is the love?? We finally ran back a kickoff for a touchdown!!!!!

“The Jets have the third worst rush defense in the NFL, and permitted Laurence Maroney to rush for 104 yards and a score. Good thing the Pats weren’t playing a real defense, or this one could have been their first loss.”
Yes, this makes perfect sense. Because of course the Pats would have attempted to run as much against a ‘real’ run defense.
The Pats will do on offense whatever you allow them to. Maroney hadn’t even seen the field in two weeks. Then he gets 26 touches. Guess what, it’s not an accident.
