1 pm Games Recap: Derek Anderson is Human, the Lions Win, and the Giants Fourth Quarter Explosion
NFL December 23rd. 2007, 4:22pm
Bad weather and upsets. Two days to Christmas!
Cincinnati 19, Cleveland 14: The fourth quarter was one of the most exciting we’ve seen this season. After trailing 19-0 at halftime, the Browns started to rally late in the second half and nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback (which would have destroyed us, since we had the Bengals straight up to win). Cleveland still hasn’t locked up a playoff spot, but everyone should hope for a Tennessee loss at home against the Jets, because the Browns are a much more exciting team this year than the Titans. Derek Anderson threw four picks, and his weak fling into the end zone at the final horn fell incomplete.
New York Giants 38, Buffalo 21: Ahmad Bradshaw broke a couple tackles and used blazing speed to score on an 88-yard TD run with six minutes left as the Giants advanced to the playoffs in the snow in Buffalo. The play after his TD run, rookie Trent Edwards threw his second pick six of the half. Everyone’s talking how the Vikings are a dangerous team in the playoffs? We’d not want to play the Giants (even though the Vikings slammed them in New York earlier this season), unless the game were in dirty Jersey, where they seem to suck. But Eli and company will be on the road, which may not bode well for Seattle or Tampa in the first round. The Bills actually led 14-0 early.
Philadelphia 38, New Orleans 23: Like we’ve told you for, oh, 10 weeks now, the Saints aren’t going to the playoffs. Are Eagles fans sure they don’t want D-Mac back next year? McNabb threw two TD passes in the second half for a second straight impressive road win late in the season.
Indianapolis 38, Houston 15: Nice cover by the Colts. The good Manning was splendid – 28-for-35 for 311 yards and three TDs. On the bright side, Mario Williams had a sack, and he’s got 14 for the season, temporary placing him second in the league behind Dallas stud DeMarcus Ware.
Jacksonville 49, Oakland 11: Not sure what made us think the Raiders could be competitive in this one, but the Jags must mean business, because this one was never in doubt. Many will brush off this victory, but this is what the really good teams do – beat the hell out of inferior teams. No messing around, no mental errors, no ‘bad games’ – you pound the crap out of a weak team. Fred Taylor rushed for 111 yards and the Jags defense welcomed JaMarcus Russell to the NFL: 7-for-23, three interceptions, but he did throw his first NFL TD pass with less than a minute left.
Chicago 35, Green Bay 7: Significant and somewhat surprising loss by the Packers, who will now only host the NFC Championship if Dallas is not involved. The Bears scored on a blocked punt return for a touchdown, and an interception return as well. Favre was picked off twice and we’re surprised he was on the field in the fourth quarter.
Detroit 25, Kansas City 20 – The six-game losing streak is over, but only barely. The Lions got 102 rushing yards from TJ Duckett and had an INT returned for a touchdown but still nearly wasted a 19-0 lead. The Lions win overshadowed a pretty awesome game by Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen – he had two sacks and caught a 1-yard TD pass.

Manning just owned us today, Texans have a long way to go still. Put your money on them to beat the jags though, we always win at least once.

Even in victory the Bengals find a way to suck loudly. The Browns would have won going away with a good quarterback.

If the Texans would actually build an offensive line, then they could be scary. Until then, Houston QB’s will be destroyed by D-linemen

Thanks so much to CBS for sticking with the Jax-Oakland game all the way, and not switching off to Cleveland. I was really sweating it out to see if Jax would cover the 45-pt spread.

Not sure how you can say the 4th quarter of the Browns-Bengals game was exciting, unless you enjoy watching two sorry ass teams try their hardest to give away the game.

Of any team in the NFC playoffs, the Giants would probably be the one I would most like to play. They haven’t looked good against any of the top teams whatsoever. Manning will almost lose the game by himself. This game against Buffalo was their most impressive game in months, and they won’t be facing a rookie qb from Stanford every week.

So I wasn’t the only one driven mad by CBS not switching games. I mean, c’mon, it was 42-3 before the 4 quarter started. Any other game would have been better than that..
