Can You Dig It? Sixty-Two Hours Dedicated to a Game That Doesn’t Matter (Giants-Patriots!)
Media Gossip/Musings, NFL December 26th. 2007, 12:40pm
The word you’re looking for here is excessive. To get everyone (that can watch, anyway) geeked about a game that will likely be played by benchwarmers, the NFL Network plans to air 62 hours of coverage leading up to the Saturday night tussle between the 15-0 Patriots and playoff-bound Giants. The game is Saturday, and by halftime, we fully expect Eli Manning to be in street clothes on the bench, performing drunk karaoke in front of Brandon Jacobs, Plaxico Burress and the entire defensive line. Selections we recommend: Beck’s I’m a Loser, Mary J. Blige’s No More Drama, or Willie Nelson’s On the Road Again.
Games we care most about this weekend: Tennessee at Indy (go Colts!) and Dallas at Washington (go Skins!). We’re, of course, assuming the Browns handle their bidness and mop the floor with Shaun Hill and San Fran.

I wouldn’t assume anything with the Browns. Wouldn’t you have assumed that last week against the sorry Bengals where a win would have clinched a playoff berth for them they would have won?
My karaoke recommendation would be “Don’t Stop Believin” by Journey

Preach on, Mr. Hiestand. The world did not end because half of America couldn’t watch half a dozen football games. And now we’ll see how much of a demand there is for the NFL Network when it goes 11 months without another live regular season game. Oh wait, maybe consumers will be “outraged” again when they don’t get to see the Combine, or they miss their daily reports from Atlanta Falcons training camp.
And if the NFL tries to funnel even more big games to their fledgling network next year, they will only look worse and greedier. Go ahead, do it. The world still won’t end and you will be exposed. Yeah, this is all about giving the fan more choices–what a load of shit.

Plus the Browns game means nothing, their result doesn’t matter, if the Titans win they don’t make it, if they Titans lose they do make it.
December 26th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
So, the question here is, if the NFL Network shows a game and nobody sees it, did it really happen?
December 26th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
That has to be the dirtiest sentence I’ve ever read on this site.

You don’t mop the floor with Shaun Hill; he mops the floor with you. Niners win, and then go 19-0 next season.
December 26th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
Wow- A rebound from sub .500 to 19-0 without a first round pick. Impressive.
December 26th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
62 hours? When did the NFL Network turn into ESPN?
December 26th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
The NFL Network is the devil!!!
December 26th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
Fortunately, no one can watch it anyway.
December 26th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Wait… they aren’t the same thing?
Damn, and all this time I just figured shitty primetime games with even shittier commentators were all being flung at me from one network…
December 26th, 2007 at 2:03 pm
“We’re, of course, assuming the Browns handle their bidness and mop the floor with Shaun Hill and San Fran.”
Except the outcome of that game has absolutely no bearing on anyone’s (including the Browns’) playoff chances.

Does anyone know why the Eagles at 7-8 and victories over both the Vikings and the Saints are already eliminated while the Saints are 7-8 and still alive?
December 26th, 2007 at 2:08 pm
CBH–I’m not sure here, but does it have something to do with two other teams in their division already clinching spots? Can a division not have more than two teams in the playoffs? Just guessing…

how did bruce get an avatar?
December 26th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
cbh49er- Because the Redskins have the tiebreaker against the Eagles so they can’t pass the Skins. If NO forces a 3 way tie with Minnesota and the Skins then NO wins the tiebreaker.
December 26th, 2007 at 2:11 pm
Division ties are broken first…

The NFL may have met its match in Big Cable. I say they give in next year. /wishful thinking
Also, the Giants’ offense need all the reps it can get right now – I’d be surprised if they didn’t play 3 quarters.

Thanks rs27, it just seems weird this year, like with the Eagles and Saints situation, and then the fact that Cleveland could win and miss the playoffs or lose and make the playoffs, I don’t remember a recent year with so many strange scenarios.

Niners aren’t the pushover team they were a few weeks ago. They’ll give Anderson and the Dawg pound a run for their mop money.
December 26th, 2007 at 2:26 pm
man, in the time it took to read the post and comments I missed out on some quality programming on NFL network. I must say I am priveledged enough to say my cable company gave in long ago to Goliath and I was able to watch the Pats- Dolphins game 3 times on replay yesterday. Then I followed it up 2 replays of the Packers getting stomped by the Bears and Rich Eisen’s quick wit. The country is certainly worse off for not seeing all that great coverage…

@Magglio- ‘Cuz I’m special…
December 26th, 2007 at 3:35 pm
No idea how Bruce pulled that off. It’s on our list of things to look into this week. Bruce?
December 26th, 2007 at 3:38 pm
That must be Bruce Banner. Dont make him mad…

This is the 1st game of consequence (to me) that the NFL network has had. This will be the first time I make an effort to see a game on this network. Even though it will be played partially by backups, it will be very interesting, especially if its close, to see how the two teams handle crunch time with history on the line.

@ Chelsea Chris
GB vs. Dallas? That was a damn good game, or had the oppurtunity to be.
December 26th, 2007 at 4:18 pm
No comments about the picture? How about for Eli’s karaoke the song “low” or “crank that”. And yes, I have NFL network and I enjoy what they do on sundays with constant game updates, especially when we are stuck watching regional games(the entire Jax-Oak game)..
December 26th, 2007 at 4:43 pm
Got the PS3 today, does anyone on here have it? What do you think?
December 26th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
Please say the “Patriots-Giants game will be simulcast on CBS & NBC” rumors are true.
ESPNews has been wrong before.

The NFL gives in and says it will simulcast on CBS also. Simulcast? Just who do they think is going to watch NFL Network and not CBS?
December 26th, 2007 at 5:25 pm
I thought the simulcast was only for the teams’ home markets (NYC & Boston markets). They had a similar deal for the GB-Dallas game.
BTW, looks like Brady didnt waste any time on this one either. Eli’s got a little baby bump going.
December 26th, 2007 at 5:28 pm
Vulcan..the game was already going to be showed on Free TV in Boston and NY now it is going to be on nationally on CBS and NBC…I wonder why Fox didn’t get it as well they are also a broadcast partner of the NFL…not that it needs to be on 3 networks.
December 26th, 2007 at 5:38 pm
Sooooo, A game that does not matter huh, TBL? Two broadcast Networks seem to think it does. Respect the NFL you heathens….and thank your lucky stars this league is led by intelligent people “who get it”(thanks Colin).
More Football for ALL!

Who to listen to:
Simms criticizing Brady for throwing a go route to Moss when Welker is wide open under the middle while Nantz continues to slob on Brady’s knob . . .
. . . Madden slob on Brady’s knob while Michaels plugs the latest edition of the abortion known as ‘Knight Rider’ . . .
. . . or Gumbel admit he hates being black and would give his superior mumbling skills away for a chance to be Wes Welker for an hour?
The choices are endless.
December 26th, 2007 at 6:50 pm
Tom Brady emailed him the avatar.
December 26th, 2007 at 7:15 pm
TBL- Not sure why, but my gravatar just started showing up again about three days ago. Must be magic(or, in the the spirit of the season, the Magi).
December 26th, 2007 at 7:21 pm
Are CBS & NBC each bringing their crews to the game, or is Gumball going to be the voice heard (ie, simulcast) on all 3 networks?
December 26th, 2007 at 8:30 pm
I’m sure it will be the NFL Network announcers. Hopefully Gumbel calls in sick.
