The Return of American Gladiators: It’s About Time
MMA, TV January 6th. 2008, 5:12pm
American Gladiators returns to television this evening. The kid in this blogger is kind of psyched for this. I’ve been waiting for this since… Well, I guess since I realized that American Gladiators wasn’t on television anymore.
I don’t have any idea what channel it used to be on, but I do remember watching reruns on USA(?) at my great uncle’s house. I’d be switching through channels and would always stop on AG. I thought it was just the cat’s pajamas.
Then Nickelodeon came out with GUTS, which I also watched whenever I could.
What was the allure?
Perhaps it’s seeing people appear to get hurt. Everything on Gladiators and (some of the stuff on) GUTS looks like it hurts. In reality, everyone is safe and walks away with little more than a bruise or two – but damn it if it isn’t fun to see someone get hit in the head with a tennis ball shot from an air cannon. Am I right people?
Gladiators was originally on in the early 90’s and an entire generation has been waiting for a comeback for some time now. Personally, I lobbied for it’s return when I was in college, but no one took action because I was lobbying to my roommate who didn’t have many connections that could help me to realize my dream.

In my incarnation of Gladiators, I pictured “The Miz” and other reality stars that had shared similar workout styles with Roger Clemens. Of course NBC went another route and came up with people like Gina Carano – or “Crush” as she’ll be know on the show- an MMA fighter with a 5-0 record. (She’ll fight Feb. 16 on the next Kimbo Slice card)
While I still think The Miz should be involved in some facet, I’m hoping that NBC got it right. It would be a travesty if this didn’t work. I don’t want this to be a just another terrible remake that rapes our memories.
If you’re interested, ESPN sent somebody to check it out and he got tossed around (with video!) by a couple of the Gladiators. From what I saw, it still looks like it could be pretty sweet.
I know I’ll be watching tonight. I plan on seeing some violence, pain, and… did I mention violence? (I did? Okay, just checking.) I just hope it was worth the wait.

I’m all kinds of geeked up for AG tonight. Been looking forward to it for months. I’ve got the DVR set to record too, just in case.
Speaking of bringing back kick ass shows from our youth, I saw a commercial for Knight Rider. It looked great and I was stoked about it coming back… Then I realized that KITT is now a Mustang. WTF? How could they possibly let that happen? What a bunch of sellouts. I’m having a serious debate with myself as to whether or not I can even watch it.

i share your enthusiasm for gladiators. when i was in middle school, we found out our science teacher was a challenger on the show when it was on…ever since that we wanted to see it come back. i saw a commercial that showed the gladiator losing assault and getting launched into a water pit, justice or malitia look like they might murder someone
awesome

I’m somewhat pumped for about the first three episodes because I think it’s going to be so bad it’ll be hilarious. After that, its comedic appeal will go away quickly.

As a young lad I set up a homemade American Gladiators home game in the backyard that My buddies and I worked played. For Assault we had lacrosse sticks and tennis balls, and we’d run form station to station launching them at the target (an old picnic table with a target painted on it) while the other would throw tennis balls at us. God it was glorious.
Safe to say I am sufficiently excited for this

You guys aren’t going to be able to contain yourselves if Hee Haw makes a comeback, are you?
January 6th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
How bad would it to face your buddies, after you got beat down by the gay black guy?

The only thing I remember about my indoor Gladiator game as a kid was that we stood on a coffee table and jousted with pillows and the Gauntlet involved climbing my bunk bed without the ladder, which was fun and games until my sister fell and almost killed herself. Damn, I miss the early 90’s.

I always liked ‘Double Dare’ better than ‘Guts’. There was always a good chance someone’s parent’s would bite the dust on ‘DD’….

As someone who never watched the original American Gladiators, this one has me giddy. I’m not going to be able to watch it, so I’m gong to record it and catch it later.

did they lure Mike Adamle and his mullet out of retirement?

Dornoch-If this post would have been talking shit about American Gladiators, then you would have been all for it.
Your game is OLD.

Can’t watch it, its going up against The Wire.
My prediction: They do find a way to screw this up. What’s ya gonna do when Hulk Hogan’s schtick gets on everybody’s nerves, brother?

Is Mitchell going to check their lockers for roids?

What exactly looked like it hurt during GUTS? Those kids had padding to protect their padding. Er, well, I did see some emotional bruises when the doucheface boys realized they has just lost to a girl.
But then they’d fake-hi-five and it would be all better.

Thankfully it is American Gladiators and not not Iranian Gladiators so I can choose to think the show is as gay as Richard Simmons if I choose.

Dornoch-I am all for your right to disagree, but do you have to do it every time.
The “free country” defense is so typical of people with BBS.

My not one to find women who could possibly kick my ass the least bit attractive. But I’d let Gina kick my ass for a few rounds before laying the thunder down on her. By “laying the thunder” I mean cry in the corner in pain.

That’s true, The original was Larry Csonka’s finest career accomplishment.

3 minutes in synopsis:
The single gayest thing to air this year. But tragically hilarious enough to watch more.

We have our first torn ACL. Nice.

A firefighter and a professional skateboarder? When did we timewrap to 1994?
January 6th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
doesn’t the Wolf look like that cross-eyed guy that acts in all of Adam Sandler’s movies?
January 6th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Why does the firefighter have a penis tattooed on his shoulder?
January 6th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
“another one bites the dust!” lame.

Gina wasn’t playing around.

clemson leads unc by 4 with 4 mins left on fsn…little better than the gladiators
January 6th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Malibu doesn’t take this AG love too kindly.
January 6th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Malibu is probably still rocking the long hair.

This version really blew…hard. Cheesy dialogue with whoever the hell was narratoring, overdone camera work, played out catch phrases, the whole show was a complete disaster.
Terrible. I won’t watch it again.
January 6th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Yikes — AG is a flop. Why is everyone — Hulks and the GOAT’s daughter, the contestants and the gladiator — always smiling and patting each other on the back. I demand more trash-talking, more conflict and more hair pulling.
January 6th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Brother, I thought it was awesome, brother. I mean, brother, those little guys were flipping and going all out, brother.
Helga is my dad.

Van Earl Wright…is only slightly more tolerable than Hogan and Ali
I’m still trying to decide if Siren v2.0 is hot or not. Gina, definitely
January 7th, 2008 at 9:16 am
AG is bad enough that I will most definitely be watching again tonight. Did anyone else notice that the referee who is always say “Is the contestant ready?” is the same referee from Dodgeball? That was, by far, the most entertaining part. “Double elimination! Sudden death!”

Favorite AG moment had to be the Family Feud Special AG Battle of the Sexes. The big blonde guy is a ringer who played football at Cornell in the late ’80s.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:52 am
Watched AG last night and I wasn’t impressed. Hulk just doesn’t do it for me as a host. It’s like he’s giving a wrestling interview, brother.
Maybe tonight will be better, but my initial reaction is that it won’t be renewed after the initial season.
