Not Even the QB and the Defensive Coordinator’s Daughter Can Make the BCS Title Game Interesting
College Football, Media Gossip/Musings January 7th. 2008, 10:59am
Two years ago at OSU’s bowl game, it was Buckeyes linebacker AJ Hawk dating Notre Dame QB Laura Quinn, sister of the Irish QB. (They got married, we posted photos of Brady Quinn dressed up like one of the Village People at their wedding, and the photographer slapped us with a lawsuit. Big fun!) This year, it’s OSU QB Todd Boeckman dating Shannon Heacock, the daughter of the Buckeyes defensive coordinator. (Sounds like a Friday Night Lights storyline waiting to happen.) We took a cursory look around the web and couldn’t come up with any better photos; surely, you can do better.
And now, a question from a reader: “Am I the only one who has a problem with Kirk Herbstreit calling the championship game on ESPN Radio? Kirk Herbstreit? He’s the biggest Buckeye homer and booster there is. There is this great pic of him jumping on the back of Eddie George while they are standing on the sideline, celebrating an Ohio State TD against Miami in the title game a few years back, I believe.”
Reader’s got a point. We enjoy Herbie’s work – especially when paired with Corso – but calling the national title game of the school he attended does seem odd. Here’s the photo in question (from 2002).

Herbie gets a front row view of his team getting an ass-raping.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Yeah I have a problem with it, too. But that is why I will stay away from ESPN Radio tonight and listen to the local broadcast by the LSU play-by-play man Jim Hawthorne. Oh, and Geaux Tigers!
January 7th, 2008 at 11:08 am
Yea, he’s an alum, but I think that he’s definitely improved over the years. I think there were plenty of games this season where Herbie picked the Bucks to lose… not that that makes things better. Here’s where I say “but still.”
January 7th, 2008 at 11:08 am
I heard Bob Griese is furious over the conflict of interest with Herbstreit: http://www.rosebowlhistory.org/rose-bowl-1998.php
January 7th, 2008 at 11:09 am
Bob Griese calling the ‘98 Rose Bowl has no problem with Herbstreit calling the Championship game of his alma mater.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Just not fast enough.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:10 am
I have to say yes this is questionable. Networks do this all the time but it always strikes me as unprofessional. Most networks have more than one announcing tandem is it really that big a blow to the “top guys” ego to say “look we don’t want there to be the perception of bias by fans so we’re going with the “B” color guy for this game. It’s not a reflection of you.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:12 am
I hate how we’re supposed to act like these guys aren’t fans and don’t have opinions/feelings about players and teams.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:17 am
No comments on the girl?
Most definitely a yes.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Good point about Griese. Too bad blogs weren’t around then.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Yes, because the blogs will surely cause Herbstreit to not call the game.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Oh, and yes, that chick is highly bangable.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:28 am
I’m with CRM on this one. It is unnatural to want these guys to not have feelings or loyalties to one team or another. As long as it doesn’t stray into Dickie-V knee pad territory, I’m fine with it.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:28 am
if your premise is that bspn has some ethical credibility, you might have a point.
btw, anyone wonder the punishment for a defensive scout team player who f’s with Boeckman at a practice?
January 7th, 2008 at 11:29 am
i guess ill be the first one to say it today
FUCK OHIO STATE
GO LSU
January 7th, 2008 at 11:29 am
I just wish they would fire “Herbie” altogether after that Michigan coach info. debacle. Fuck that guy. He added extra pressure to a situation for no reason and it is still fishy to me because of his buckeye past. He should go sell some used cars (or go directly to jail) like his other football playing alumni.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Oh who cares, so what, he’s a fan – all of these guys are. It’s not like it effects the actual game. And who the hell would listen to it on ESPN Radio anyway?
CFB is a disaster. When is the last time Ohio State played a game? Six weeks ago? And now they play LSU in the “National Championship” right after the NFL playoffs start? Who is in charge of this sport? Just terrible.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Herbstreit looks like the male Malibu Barbie equivalent to Ken. He also has to be the worst partner to Tirico on his ESPN radio show.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Herbie is the best announcer in the business, and I don’t have any problems with him calling the game. IMO, anyone who does is just looking to pick a fight.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Herbie would be an excellent used car salesman.
Perhaps, ESPN is making him call the game so he isn’t on the sideline again.
I’ve got a funny OSU feeling tonight. I don’t really care about either team. Both sets of fans seem to be self-righteous and delusional.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Absolutely nothing is going to stop Herbie from calling this game, but occasionally, if the wheel is squeaky enough … you know how that goes
January 7th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Speaking of the fans, here’s a very well-written, balanced, and interesting take on the fan bases of each team, by that guy who writes EDSBS.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:36 am
All sportscasters have their biases. You just have to learn how to filter them out.
Dicky V’s love (for the record this has been the most enjoy about college basketball season because he has been gone) of Duke and UNC.
Craig Jame’s infatuation with the Big 12 (not so much this season, but pervious seasons you would think he was getting handys from most of the Big 12 coaches).
Lou Holtz’s affair with Notre Dame. He claimed they were going to win eight games at the beginning of the season. I thought Mark May was going to blow a fuse on the set when he heard that.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:36 am
I still have nightmares over the worst officiated national championship game in the history of modern college sports. The fact that Herbie jumped like someone cunt punted him just makes him more of a douche about his so-called “professionalism” when trying to hide his bias during any OSU game he called this year. Fuck him and fuck Ohio State.
The girl? She’s about 7.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:37 am
i hope that girl is a practicing nurse because her boyfriend is going to get knocked around bad tonight
LSU d line > OSU o line
going to be great to see OSU get there ass kicked
January 7th, 2008 at 11:39 am
Why should Herbie be fired for being a biased fan? Cowherd is clearly a west-coast-biased USC fan, and noone here ever clamors for him to be fired.
Oh, wait, nevermind…
January 7th, 2008 at 11:39 am
Narrator, I am assuming you are saying she is a 7 out of 10 and not actually 7, beacuse that would just be creepy.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:40 am
spoken by a bitter ND fan
January 7th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Seeing that all I care about is that tOSU gets bitch slapped I really don’t care who calls the game. I will be watching it on mute while running on the treadmill…
Who else you going to get in there…it could be worse. I had the pleasure of listening to Dennis Green on AM radio last night calling the Chargers game. That was horrible.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:41 am
I despise OSU and their mouth breathing fans, but Herbie is the man. He rarely lets the OSU homer inside him come out and I respect him for that. He regularly bashes OSU and picks against them. He is one of the few competent college announcers, and my wife thinks he’s absolutely dreamy.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:41 am
just out of curiosity why do all you guys hate OSU so much?
January 7th, 2008 at 11:42 am
just because im irish doesnt mean i like Notre DAme there monoast
i like the U and that is why i will always hate OSU, the U got robbed by bad refs
January 7th, 2008 at 11:42 am
There has been 9 weeks of NFL games played since OSU last played. This will be an ugly game to watch until the teams remember what they are doing.
I think that girl will deteriorate when more pics are found.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:43 am
Yeah I think Herbie does a great job typically. I’d be the first to call him out for homerism, but I haven’t ever really seen it. Herbie is one of the bright spots of ESPN, as is their college football coverage.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:43 am
you’ve got a point TBL but this happens so often in sports it’s almost passe. not saying it’s right but herbie is the latest in a long line.
i mean, joe buck and tim mccarver called the 2004 and 2006 world series. buck is a cardinals announcer, mccarver is a former longtime cardinals player (won two rings with them). hell, harry carey called the 1968 world series for nbc and he was the cardinals announcer at the time. herbie isn’t the first and won’t be the last.
i believe herbstreit will be professional. he’s called a few michigan-osu games and did a decent job of playing it down the middle.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:44 am
I like them young and naive.
I wasn’t saying Herbie should be taken off the game. He was really good in the Rose Bowl. However, just seems odd for a guy to call his own alma mater’s championship game and have the poise to not go on aggressive campaign of sucking off everyone who hated on OSU prior to this game if, only if God hates us all, the buckeyes find a way to win this game.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:45 am
As long as Herbstreit wears a shirt that matches his seductive eyes, I’m fine with it.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:46 am
I say we wait till tomorrow morning to completely hound him. Yeah he is a homer, but Fox doesn’t have a problem letting Troy call Cowboys games and ESPN lets Joe Morgan talk about the Reds every five minutes. Kirk is a good announcer and until he calls this game, I am going to give him a pass. On a side note, it is just the radio.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:46 am
I am actually rooting for Ohio State, I think LSU is highly overrated and I think people are underestimating how motivated Ohio State will be considering they have been called shitty for the past year.
I don’t care what Ohio State fans are like, they have never done anything to me so I have no reason to dislike the team.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Then again, Sean McDonough brings up either Boston or Syracuse in every one of his broadcasts.
One other quick thing on the ‘98 Rose Bowl. Didn’t Keith Jackson graduate from Washington State?
January 7th, 2008 at 11:49 am
When does Joe Morgan ever talk about the Reds? The Reds haven’t been on ESPN in about 10 years.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:51 am
@Dornoch: He talks about his career with the Reds all the time and how great of a player he was. It will drive a sane man into insanity.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:52 am
fucking meeting, i missed out on an OSU debate.
still don’t understand all the OSU hate.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:52 am
the u got robbed…like how the u was holding that entire game and was never called
what did u in was the McGahee injury and that call was dead on, you will never admit it but it was dead on
January 7th, 2008 at 11:54 am
im with u spencer the only was to rationalize it, and im not trying to sound like douche, is people hate teams that consistently do well, and aside from last yr, OSU has been doing very well
its like a hate bandwagon, whatever team is doing well the fans of the teams who aren’t jump right on
January 7th, 2008 at 11:54 am
There has been 9 weeks of NFL games played since OSU last played. This will be an ugly game to watch until the teams remember what they are doing.
Take the under … 47.5
January 7th, 2008 at 11:55 am
27-20 osu…thats my story and im sticking to it
January 7th, 2008 at 11:56 am
It’s ESPN Radio, who fucking cares? Would you rather Cowherd or Steven A Smith called the game? Come to think of it, I guess I’d rather hear SAS call the game.
That chick wins in a first round TKO over Quinn’s sister.
January 7th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Why all the OSU hate? Every year there is some trashy OSU fan that actually shit talks me at the bar when I am watching the UM v. OSU game (like gets in my face about it like a moron). They have questionable character guys (not that big a deal, just makes me laugh). Have you ever been to C-Bus (it is hell)? Every time my car is in Ohio it gets keyed for even having a michigan plate. I never stop there anymore not for Cheetos or a tank of gas. Seriously. That kind of crap just doesn’t happen as often here. I am not saying it never happens, but I would have to say Michigan fans keep it a bit more classy as a whole. I have no proof, but that is my opinion. I am a Michigan fan.
January 7th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
mmnoast…doesn’t make any sense at all. the same things people use for excuse to hate OSU, they use to say WVU fans are charming or that Miami or insert-SEC-team fans are crazy. and OSU is still a “thug” school even tho theyve had 3 incidents in the last 5 years compared to Texas where guys get busted for selling weed on the daily? whatever.
no way im making any type of prediction for tonight after last year’s debacle.
January 7th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Mags…the same could be said about EVERY SINGLE OTHER FOOTBALL FACTORY SCHOOL IN AMERICA.
and you and I are exempt from this discussion. ill never be able to understand why people hate OSU just like you’ll never understand why people like them in the first place.
and if we’re knocking each other’s schools, might as well say its pretty hypocritical for Michigan to say theyre such a hard school to get into, yet guys are taking crap majors just like anywhere else. yea UM is a better school than OSU, and its not close, but the football teams are pretty identical when it comes to brainpower (i.e. none).
January 7th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Personally, I’m not an OSU hater. I root for them against Big Blue every year (sorry Maggio) and rooted for them against Thug U in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. I just don’t give them a snowball’s chance against a vastly superior LSU team.
January 7th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
And, by the way, the coach’s daughter is hot–and, remarkably, mostly absent from the internet.
January 7th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
@ Spencer…There is tOSU hate because every freaking player or person has to say THE OSU, and it’s annoying. They act like they are the center of the football universe, and they aren’t. Sorry if you like them, but Buck the Fuckeyes.
Who cares if Herbie is a homer, i like emotion.
January 7th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
i will agree that saying THE osu is pretty obnoxious…
January 7th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Also, I hate that stupid sweater vest, the way Tressel uses players like Clarett to win a championships, helps them cheat with booster, then acts holier than thou, and chastizes those guys. Also that Miami game/PI call was BULLSHIT, and it still kills me when I see it on ESPN classic.
January 7th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
fist off, that call was right, theres tons of evidence blah blah.
second, isnt that kind of like the way bowden used some shady guys? or pete carroll using reggie bush despite bush getting booster help? or pretty much any other major school’s coach in america? none of the top 25 is squeaky clean, and any coach that says it is, is full of shit. and OSU can’t hold a candle to pretty much any SEC team when it comes to cheating history, yet again…no hate towards them.
January 7th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
What sweater vests are not “in”???
takes of vest
That’s better
January 7th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Win or lose a car will be burned in C-Bus tonight.
January 7th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
If only there was a place one could make such bets.
January 7th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
@ Spencer
1.) I understand the teams/players cheat, but he doesn’t even stand by his guys. He uses them, and hangs them out to dry. Reggie nor USC has been hurt by the allegations yet, so I don’t think it is a good example.
2.) As for the call, it was terrible, and the worst thing in championship history. The ball was tipped at the line for 1, allowing the DB to hit the receiver, and secondly, he didn’t even hit him early. If you ever want to see an example of perfect timing, watch that play. It really was BS, and there is no denying it, unless you are Herbstreit.
January 7th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
412- I guess I could take wagers: over/under 2.5 cars.
January 7th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
If C-Bus wins…over. Those morons will burn the place down.
January 7th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
die_eagles_die…can’t find the link, but there is a detailed snapshot of each point where it was pretty obvious that the call was made correctly. even then, who cares, miami still shouldve destroyed the bucks earlier and couldn’t get it done.
as for not standing by his guys? antonio henton (the only other guy to be embroiled in an actual scandal since) is still on the team. clarett was an extreme example, would you have kept him on the team after what he did? we cant all be bobby bowden and say, “itd be easier to cut them,” then deal with having convicts on our team.
January 7th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
A couple things: First, that call in the Fiesta Bowl was iffy, and I say that as an OSU fan. HOWEVER, the entire fourth quarter consisted of the refs not calling penalties on Miami (there were a lot of egregious holding penalties on the receivers that got missed) and generally helping Miami come back. That call in the overtime should never have happened because the overtime should never have happened.
Second, all these complaints about Herbstreit are falling on deaf ears. I had to listen to Bob Griese call his son’s games every year in the OSU/Michigan game AND I have to sit through Brent Musberger wearing his god damn maize and blue tie every time he calls the game in recent years. Both he and Griese are so pro-Michigan in those games, that a homer on Radio seems like a really mild problem.
January 7th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
@Spence: http://www.robsts.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=3
Go tOSU
January 7th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
Nick P…much appreciated.
January 7th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
ohio state is called The Ohio State University, they are just calling the school by its right name
January 7th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
@spencer
here is the link you were looking for….and i dont remember that ball being tipped EVER!
http://www.buckeyefansonly.com/notcalled.html
January 7th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
mmonast – The douchebaggery of it comes in the over-emphasis of “THE,” as if there were other, imitation Ohio State Universities causing confusion for those that attended “THE” Ohio State University.
January 7th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
I agree with what someone said above about (I’m too lazy to scroll up–yes, that lazy, so I’m paraphrasing) people hating on teams that are doing well. It’s kinda like the SEC. I’m a UGA grad, and will never understand why people bash the SEC so much. It’s not our fault that the media blows us…But yet people bash the SEC as much as possible. Whatever.
January 7th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
i see what you mean ben…and i guess the same reason why people who arent osu fans hate it is when osu fans love it
January 7th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Dude, somebody thank Willie Wonka for posting in fine print on that Buckeye site.
January 7th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
So why are there so many Big 10 fans who wear jersies?
January 7th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
why are there so many SEC fans who wear jorts?
January 7th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
jerseys>jorts
January 7th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
That’s funny. My brother roots for Michigan and he swears that Murberger has a boner for Ohio State.
January 7th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
@ spencer 096
I agree that the same thing can be said for all football factory schools. I just think that when Michigan is consistantly beating the piss out of OSU (it goes in cycles) that we (Michigan) will not be in 3 NC games in 4 years nor will our fans be incredible asshats. My opinion really is useless though because of my avatar alone. I do agree with what you have said in regards to my comment.
January 7th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
@ Spencer/OSU homers…Gamble jumps into the receiver. He is allowed to be standing in his position, hence not PI. He is allowed to jam the receiver off of the line. If you follow the link for the video of the play, you will see that it is tipped at the line of scrimmage. The ball clearly changes its rotation after the lineman touched it. Look at about the 56 second mark. It is clear as day. Also, the flag comes in about 20 minutes after the play. The analysis on the video is from a tOSU that is completely wrong. All in all, the call was BS.
January 7th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
The video evidence
January 7th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
@mmonast
I hate Ohio State because I lived in Columbus for 3 years. Fun town, nice people, insanely mind-boggling obsession will all things OSU. That town needs some perspective and a pro sport.
January 7th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Cause the Geaux in “Geaux Tigers” isn’t equally pretentious (It’s not a real word, in French or English), nor is “the U”, “Maize”, “Big Red”, or any number of college football traditions.
That’s the whole point of having something stand out, to separate yourself from the 200+ universities out there, but when you pick something to do so it can easily be seen as pretentious.
January 7th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Fam was at dinner on Saturday night and there was a table of 4 and ALL of them had jerserys on! The combined weight for the 4 was pushing 1000lbs. My daughter ask if they were athletes!!!! I damn near fell out of the booth.
Sorry…side story about wearing jearseys in Big 10 country. People wear them here because they have nothing better to do then fantasize about being someone they are not! It is Michigan afterall.
January 7th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
@Spencer $ mmonast
If by SEC fans you mean Florida fans, then yes, why do so many SEC fans wear jorts?
January 7th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
die_eagles_die…the ball is still in play tho and the WR has a chance to catch the ball. just because its tipped doesnt mean that the WR’s ability to catch the ball wasn’t impeded because it clearly was. even when gamble bobbles it, sharpe still grabs gamble’s facemask while he stil has a chance to make the catch…hence the PI call.
Mags…you know, regardless of how UM fans act, I’ll still think of them as hypocritical, arrogant, condescending douchebags. just like you’ll always think that OSU fans are kerosene-chugging, retarded, mongoloids. and, just like always, we’ll both be right.
January 7th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
@ Narrator: The blue and maize tie has happened in the past couple years (don’t know about this year) and I never have seen him wear scarlet and gray. But there’s a real chance that Musberger jacks off both teams, but my anger with his jacking of MU makes me not listen to him when he jacks off OSU.
I hate musberger for football games. He’s a lot better for basketball though.
January 7th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
@spencer: Once the ball gets tipped, you’re allowed to pass interfere the hell out of everyone. THat’s his point.
I never remember that ball getting tipped though.
January 7th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Gamble still had the chance to make the catch. Once the ball is tipped, the defender has the right to make a hit on the WR. This isn’t the NFL where you can’t cough on a guy after 5 yards. The ball was tipped and Gamble jumped into Sharpe to make the play for the ball knowing full well that if Sharpe undercut the pass it was interception and game over. The fact that the ref was willing to make a game altering call on such a bang-bang play is what irks me the most. Just like they do in college basketball, there are certain times in the game when the ref has to swallow the whistle and let the guys flex their muscles.
January 7th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Well, the call was actually made on the jamming at line of scrimmage according to the Ref (I never knew that until I read his responses right now). Under your reasoning, penalties should be allowed at the end of games because it’s better when the game changes.
January 7th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
was that video supposed to show where u are wrong? even if it was tipped u still cant hold and not to mention the facemask, as the videop showed he called holding 1st then switched. they knew there was a penalty just disagreed on which one
get over it dude, turn the page
January 7th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
@ Brave, I have never heard of a “jamming the receiver at the line penalty.” The defender can hit the WR in college within 5 yards until the ball is in the air, then it becomes PI. The ref signaled PI, and he threw the flag about 20 seconds after the play ended. So all in all, if you are telling me the ref waitied about a full minute to whip the flag out, after the penalty at the line, then he is as equally an idiot.
The ball was tipped, he can jack up that receiver. Yes he has a right to the ball, but he has a right to get smacked in the mouth if a defender is anywhere near him. Don’t blame the face mask call too when the ball is flying out of bounds. That clearly has no bearing on the play. If you want to gripe, the receiver that tips the ball looks like he is getting held too.
The video again, 56 seconds in shows the tip. Watch the flight of the ball, it changes.
The Tip
January 7th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
today is killing me…i know nobody else cares about tonight so I know im not getting any sympathy, i just want this game to be over with.
January 7th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
@die_eagles_die:I love how people think the right call shouldn’t be made if it’s not made instantaneously. Yeah, that flag was late, but the guy probably realized how important the play was an how it would be scrutinized. He probably froze and had an argument with himself. The jamming turned into a hold at the line, that’s what the problem was.
Also, you can’t tell if the ball’s flight changed for sure. Yeah, I think it looks like it did, but there’s only a split second of flight before the “tip” happens. It could just as easily have been a bad spiral coming out of Krenzel’s hand.
What do you do for a living eagles? I want to make sure you’re never handling anything important for me since you value snap judgments over correctness.
January 7th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
I love college football, but even I can’t get too charged up about this year’s national championship game. I’ll root for the dog, but I see LSU winning with some ease.
As for the disinterest, the game isn’t a clear #1 vs. #2 and it’s played way too friggin’ late. College football really ought to wrap things up before the NFL playoffs start as that is, far and away, the #1 sports story right now.
And, I still can’t get over the lack of love for Devon Aoki here!
January 7th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
412: I love her, but only when she’s throwing swastikas as Benecio Del Toro and cutting off his hand.
January 7th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
@Brave just a miami fan that cant let go that the best team in the history of college football actually lost
UM did much much more holding, penalties that didnt get called, the game should have never gone to OT…i have never seen a team get more favorable calls in a title game in my life

I don’t get paid to referee NC games. Neither should that ref. He was in the back of the end zone. It wasn’t his call to make at the line. There was a ref at the pile-on, and that is his call. To say that the back judge is making that call at the line is a reach. You are allowed to contact the receiever 1 yard beyond the neutral zone. The penalty you are looking for is illegal contact, not defensive holding. Once beyond the neutral zone, there is nothing but incidental contact, which is on both sides. I agree it is difficult to see if the ball is tipped, but that angle is right where the ref was standing, and it looks like that happened. I understand late flags come out, but they shouldn’t be that late. He didn’t throw the flag until after the failed catch attempt. If he was talking about at the line, he should have thrown it much earlier.

@spence: I am with you, want the day to be over with.
January 7th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
As someone who went to a non-football school, I’ve enjoyed reading the back and forth on the plays and calls and what not, but the best part, by far, is that damn ref at the pile-on.

Adulthood > jerseys > jorts.
On Herbstreit: he wasn’t calling that game as a reporter, he was there as a fan. Maybe he could have been a little less restrained, certainly, but it’s his alma mater. If you could, you mean to say you wouldn’t use your industry juice to get a sideline pass if your team was in the championship game? Gimme a break.
KH is one of the top analysis guys in the game, and is always pretty fair. If you are a fan of college football, you want KH calling your game. He’s as good as Jaws on MNF.

There is nothing better than seeing OSU lose. Last year was fun (I was actually in Florida!!) This year will be fun (sadly I will be in Michigan). The “tip” game was actually fun because I was at a strip club and something very strange and amazing happened. At the exact moment they showed the slow-mo replay of McGahee’s knee doing the whole rubber thing a stripper took off her top. The whole bar went “Eeeeeewwww!!!” and the stripper ran off the stage crying. Best. Moment. Ever.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a Texas fan, and found UM very pompous and annoying at the time. My favorite player on the field was Clarett, and Tressel was still an ass because he was wearing a sweater. I am not a UM fan.
January 7th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
being an ohioan who has spent time in texas, UT fans are pretty obnoxious in their own right.
January 7th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
you think the “THE” in osu is pretentious and annoying try having to deal with douche bag texas fans waving the hook em horns ever 3 fucking seconds
January 7th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
still don’t understand all the OSU hate
It’s simple, its the same reason people hate the Patriots, The Yankees, Red Sox, Duke, UNC, Peyton Manning etc…
Success breeds contempt
January 7th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Oh and for the asshats who dont understand the entire THE thing here it is..
However, the “The” was actually part of the state legislation when the university was renamed in 1878. The following excerpt is from the Board of Trustee minutes:
“…the educational institution heretofore known as the ‘Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College,’ shall be known and designated hereafter as ‘The Ohio State University.’”
ITS THE ACTUAL NAME OF THE SCHOOL
January 7th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
regardless, im an OSU fan, and even i find it obnoxious.
January 7th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Matt, it’s obnoxious whether or not it’s part of the name. It’s the obvious over-emphasis of “THE” that is annoying. It’s not the only nickname that is annoying (The U, etc.), but it is annoying nonetheless.

It’s just fans being fans. As a lifelong Pitt fan, I used to hate Penn State, too. Now, that the two teams don’t even play against each other…and Pitt and PSU fans have learned to live in peacefully harmony. There’s certainly more to fandom than “hating”, but these rivalries do make things a bit more fun.

@Matt 2517
How is 1 out of 3 National Championships success? 33% (bad ref aided) is NOT in fact success… I’m J/S’n.
January 7th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
1st its 1/2 because they haven’t played tonight so 50% pretty good, not to mention that b10 titles 4 in a row over UM and 7-1 since tress has been here. and also look at tOSUs bcs record, also very good. playing in 3 champ games since 202 very good
heisman trophy winner, great draft classes and great recruiting
so maggs i would say that is pretty damn good, all way more that UM can say in the same time frame…u just sounds like a bitter bitter UM fan than anything else
January 7th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
2002 sorry
January 7th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Last night I watched THE Wire, today i am reading THE Big Lead, later on I will be watching THE National Championship game. The emphasis of THE is to not confuse it with any other place with the same name. Like there are a lot of pills, but one is THE pill (Gary Gullman). It’s annoying. Sorry. So is THE U, or the hook em’, or the guns, or any other tradition.
January 7th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Tonight’s game is in THE Superdome. I’ll probably watch THE first quarter, walk THE dog, and go to THE bed.
January 7th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
@The412
I miss the old Pitt/PSU rivalry, its ridiculous that they don’t play any more. I remember chants of “F%$k Penn State” in Pitt stadium, even when they weren’t playing PSU. As I understand it, PSU ended it because you guys started to suck and we didn’t think you were worth the risk. Now both teams suck, so they may as well play each other. And don’t worry, we’ll never stop looking down our noses at you Pitt people, hehehehe.
January 7th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
coop… Yes, it basically ended because JoePa didn’t see the upside in continuing a heated rivalry when he could schedule a weak MAC school and get a sure win. Pitt did–and mostly does–suck, but JoePa was just covering himself. Also, when PSU wanted to play 2 games at Beaver Stadium for every one in Pgh the Pitt people balked. Shame.
January 7th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Yeah, I know there have been discussions lately about getting it on again, and I think they even agreed to have a home and home in like 2012-2013 or something. PSU should stop being an ass about it and just play every year, either the first or last game of the season.
January 7th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
If there is such an agreement I am not aware of it.
January 7th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Magglio: I believe all of us made that sound when we saw the McGahee hit. One kid at the party i was at went and puked outside.
January 7th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Also, are OSU’s satellite campuses called The Ohio State as well?
January 7th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Coincidentally, Mo Clarett just did the same thing.

This coming from a guy with a UofM icon…when is the last time you guys won…oh I don’t know…ANYTHING THAT MATTERED?
1 out of 3 is .333, hey in baseball if you have that batting average you are a first ballot hall of famer

Since no one cares about this anymore, Kirk Herbstreit got yanked from ESPN Radio in favor of Bob Davie. Well, Arizona State (where his son is) or Notre Dame’s not involved, so Davie should be bland and uninformed as usual.
