Joe Gibbs to Resign as Redskins Coach
NFL January 8th. 2008, 9:13amAccording to the Associated Press, Redskins coach Joe Gibbs has resigned as head coach and President of the team. Yesterday, he was noncommittal, now, he’s out? Strange. There will be a press conference at 3 p.m. Since this happened within the last 15 minutes, we might as well go with it: Who’s getting the job? Would Bill Cowher take over a playoff team? Les Miles? Nick Saban?
ADD: One vote to promote Gregg Williams. Also, how marginalized do the greedy BCS suits feel right now? First Clemens, now Joe Gibbs. Karma, bitches.

I say Gregg Williams gets another chance as a head coach
January 8th, 2008 at 9:16 am
Could Joe Gibbs be aligning forces with Parcells? Is this like when Savage finally warmed up to Hogan?
January 8th, 2008 at 9:19 am
Wow, a Megapowers reference. Nice! Who plays Ms. Elizabeth in that equation?
January 8th, 2008 at 9:21 am
LOL nick saban!
January 8th, 2008 at 9:21 am
Good question, I’m sure Ricky Williams wouldn’t object to putting on a dress.
January 8th, 2008 at 9:21 am
Elizabeth = Dan Snyder (played by Tom Cruise in the movie version)
January 8th, 2008 at 9:24 am
its gotta be bill cowher. cowher can milk at least $8 mil per year outta snyder, alternate 5-11 and 9-7 (but make the playoffs, so it looks like he’s not sucking) for 4 years and then watch his daughter play her WNBA games.
January 8th, 2008 at 9:30 am
Yep. I think it would be something of an upset if the next Snyder victim is not The Jaw.
January 8th, 2008 at 9:30 am
The BCS is marginalized because, as we discussed yesterday, it’s now the second week of January and no one cares about college football. It’s NFL/NBA/American Gladiators season!
January 8th, 2008 at 9:34 am
I hope they take Marvin
January 8th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Steve Spurrier.
January 8th, 2008 at 9:41 am
It’s now or never, Wayne Fontes.
January 8th, 2008 at 9:44 am
It will probably be Gregg Williams, but Joe Bugel deserves another shot.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Rich Kotite makes a triumphant return!!!!!! LOLOLOLOLOL
January 8th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Sam Wyche
January 8th, 2008 at 10:18 am
sam wyche?
January 8th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Dave Shula? Bruce Coslet?
It is Sam Wyche, not Steve.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:33 am
SVP, that’s a joke about Bugel right? He is a horrible head coach and would be a horrible choice.
Greg Williams, another horrible head coach.
I hope they stay away from those retreads, pay the “Chin” whatever he wants to get him out of retirement.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:33 am
I still think it’ll be Cowher. If not, I’m thinking Dennis Green. He is who we thought he was.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:41 am
williams did a horrible job in buffalo when he was the coach there
he is a true defensive cord, thats it
marty going back to washington would be nice
January 8th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Stefen Djordjevic will be the new coach.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:46 am
I’d like to see Cowher wait another year, I’m sure there will be another coaching job better than the Redskins, Falcons, Dolphins and Ravens.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:50 am
Jimmy McGinty is anything but a conventional coach.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:59 am
LOL–Wayne Fontes!!
I like the Chin, but think he won’t come back just yet. I think they should talk to Denny Green–but is there sometning written that says the G. Williams gets VERY strong consideration?
January 8th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Cowher wants to spend 1 more year at home until his daughter graduates HS.
Also, he would want to bring in his own personnel guy, which some of the Redskin higher ups would be opposed to.
Of course this changes when Snyder offers 10 Million per year.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:17 am
The Redsksins isn’t a good job? Good defense, promising offense, good QB in Campbell … you have to figure Carolina will be fine next year with Del homme back, and then the job won’t open up.
He’s not going to Cincy, what, Chicago if Lovie tanks?
January 8th, 2008 at 11:19 am
I think the cap purgatory the ‘Skins will be in should scare away any head coaching candidate. They’ll be over the cap during the next couple of years which will handcuff the ability of the head coach to make any decent roster decisions. Gregg Williams is probably desperate enough to want the job though.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:27 am
lohur - You make a good point that I hadn’t considered. Of course, Cowher is a master at drafting/scouting, so he may still have some interest if Danny Boy gives him total control and a long enough deal.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Go washingtonpost.com and read Redskins Insider by Jason LaCanfora, the cap hell that they are supposedly going to be in has been blown way out of proportion.
They will restructure some contracts and be fine. LaCanfora is a beat writer so I take the guys word.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:37 am
LaCanfora is solid. he’ll be working for the WWL within five years.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:37 am
The412 - First off, love the gravatar. Second, Cowher’s only mentioned because he’s a big name. I doubt he’d do it because one of the reasons he left Pittsburgh is he wanted more control over player personnel decisions. Cowher deserves his own post, but I believe he’ll wind up in either TB or Carolina next year (if they don’t make the playoffs). What next year does is it allows the team that gets Cowher to not have to pay any sort of price (money, draft picks) to the Steelers for Cowher’s services.

It is in Gregg Williams’ contract that he is the next Redskins coach in line after Gibbs exits. He was Jimbo Fisher before Jimbo Fisher was Jimbo Fisher.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Oops, check that - there is no guarantee.
Would love for Williams to get the gig, though, assuring the Skins slip back into sucktitude.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Also in the contract is if he isn’t he get’s paid 1 million dollars.
Snyder would pony that up in a second, I think Williams will be an extreme failure as a coach, just like he was in Buffalo. In Buffalo he managed to alienate that entire team in two years, last year the Skins defense hated him.
LaCanfora is very solid, read his blog daily.

I can’t believe nobody has mentioned Brian Billick yet. Would be a short trip for him, since his family will stya in the area.
January 8th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Please God, not Brian Billick.
January 8th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
No Brian Billick please.
Mike Martz!!! Bring it baby!
January 8th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Just for giggles, I’ll throw out another name: former hog, Russ Grimm.
January 8th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Redskins fans continue to amaze me. They all seem to want Williams as coach despite him being a complete failure in Buffalo and nearly causing a mutiny among the defense last year.
They don’t want Bill Cowher, a guy who took his team to the playoffs consistently with a cheap owner, and who a Super Bowl!!!
I shouldn’t be surprised, Skins fans also tried claiming that Seattle was cheating by piping in crowd noise, heaven forbid the Skins just lost because Seattle was the better team.
I hope at Gibbs press conference today he talks about how he had no more guts because he fought them all out.

Mark May. Lou Holtz endorses his route back to the NFL.
January 8th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Dick McPherson.
