At 7-foot-7, Everyone Looks Like a Shrimp
College Basketball January 10th. 2008, 10:11am
How terrified does Tyler Hansbrough look? Later, he would dunk on UNC-Ashville’s Kenny George, all 7-foot-7 of him. Also, George wears size 26 shoes.
Dayton 92, Rhode Island 83 – It’s not everyday that an A-10 game matters, but both were ranked, and thanks to Brian Roberts’ 23 (and the team’s 62 percent free throw shooting) the Flyers are 13-1. Keep an eye on Dayton – freshman stud Chris “Top Flight” Wright is still dinged up and only played eight minutes.
Tennessee 85, Mississippi 83 – Wasn’t on TV, but ESPNews cut in to the final minute, and the Rebels totally had a chance to win this one on the road, but it missed four put-backs, and then the front-end of a one-and-one. Tennessee scored with four seconds left for the win. On our In/Out list we had Chris Warren in (24 points) and Chris Lofton out (10), and we look forward to the rematch in the SEC finals.
Memphis 99, ECU 58 – Next real game: Jan 26 against Gonzaga. Until then, 30+ point wins!
Vanderbilt 90, South Carolina 83 – The unbeaten season will finally get back-to-back SEC tests – at Kentucky, then at Tennessee.
Arizona State 64, Arizona 59, OT – The Wildcats are about to run into some trouble in the Pac-10 because they essentially have five players and no bench. ASU has James Harden (26 points), who is pretty damned good.

While Lofton hasn’t been shooting or scoring like he has all of his career, this team is far more balanced than any of the previous ones, and they don’t rely on him as much. I think this may equal less accolades for him, but a better team overall.

Go ‘Dores.
January 10th, 2008 at 10:19 am
Fucking Christ, that guy is a monster. He is three or four levels above ‘normal’ height.
Kenny George @ 7′ 7″
Tyler Hansbrough @ 6′ 9″
Me @ 6′ 4″
‘Normal’ @ 5′ 10″

Launrence Fishburne works on his next big movie role.

Ben, too bad you’re not in NYC … could use you on our hoops team.
January 10th, 2008 at 10:24 am
what a dunk that was by tyler hansbrough on that monster

Finally a CBB post. When will TBL address the domination of Butler and AJ “The Alien” Graves? Best non-conference schedule if you ask me.

Haha! Kenny’s my friend. Last year, I was an academic tutor an UNCA for the spring semester and I met Kenny. Super nice guy. Hard to miss on a small campus.

Dayton has really played well in their big games. Looked great against Louisville, Pitt and RI last night. Although they lost to George Mason and struggled to get by Akron in OT. Once Wright is back at full strength (might be awhile as he suffered another injury last night) and gets back into the swing of things, this is going to be a very dangerous team.
January 10th, 2008 at 10:31 am
TBL, if you need a guy to play the 4 or 5, not handle the ball much, but loves to rebound, alter shots/drives, and play a little back-to-the-basket basketball, let me know. That, and I would need a 5-yr, $25M deal.
January 10th, 2008 at 10:32 am
yea, that’s crazy. I’m 6′ and, if i was standing next to you Ben, I’d feel pretty short, yet that guy has another 1′3” on you…crazy.
January 10th, 2008 at 10:35 am
I know no one gives a crap but George Mason is really pissing me off this year. We still suck at free throw shooting for about the fifth year in a row and we blew a 19 point lead at Deleware, after earlier this year blowing a 13 point lead at Georgia State.
That big dude was awesome, he basically didn’t have to leave the ground to do anything.
I wonder if anyone in WWE saw that game, they should have that guy take on the Great Khali.
January 10th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Spencer, that’s what I was thinking. Using the above picture, imagine me standing to the left of Hansbrough (giving up 5″), than you standing to the left of me (giving up 4″), and you’re a little above ‘average’ height for the country. That let me know how tall that guy really is.
January 10th, 2008 at 10:38 am
81 points given up to that team…does Roy Williams ever coach up defense?
January 10th, 2008 at 10:40 am
CBH- typical Larranaga basketball.
January 10th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Ben, what the F? You move out of Chicago and NOW you say you’re 6′4?
January 10th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Sportsgal is horny
January 10th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Yao Ming is already eager to dunk on this guy.
January 10th, 2008 at 10:56 am
ben…thanks, youve given me Short Man Syndrome for the rest of the day.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Spencer, that picture gave me short man syndrome for the rest of the day. I think I have to go stand in line at a store to make myself feel better.
Sportsgal, what can I say, I offered a night of drunken sloppy fun the weekend I left and you didn’t respond.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:07 am
I’m 6′5 and I’m average height amongst my friends. Four of my best friends are 6′7 or taller.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Remember “The Air Up There”, that was a sweet movie.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:17 am
I am 6′2 and my friends treat me like I am King Kong or something.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:22 am
That dude is huge. Excellent choice of going with the huge picture to get the point across. And yeah, that dunk was nasty.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:22 am
Anyone who is taller than 6-4, we could use you on our hoops team. Yes, seriously. We’re good, but we lack a big. If you live in NYC, email me.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:32 am
TBL-I think thats Tampering.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:35 am
I think we need a separate post on Ben’s height. He seems very proud of himself, and everyone seems very impressed.
Is there some sort of medal we can give him for being 6′4″?
January 10th, 2008 at 11:36 am
h8r, living up to your name
January 10th, 2008 at 11:36 am
it must be nice to be able to get on roller coasters
January 10th, 2008 at 11:37 am
h8r, if you need anything off the top shelf, let me know and I’ll grab it for you.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Well I didn’t respond because what were the chances you’d be 6′4? You’ve lived here, I’m lucky to see a guy my height (5′7) most nights!
January 10th, 2008 at 11:46 am
I’m not a Chicago native, that may be the reason for my locally abnormal height. I’m orginally from the Rocky Mountains, where apparently we’re grown bigger than in Chicago.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:55 am
I’m in Chicago and am only an inch shorter than Ben.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:56 am
However Ben conveniently didn’t include his SAT/ACT score and wang size. My sources (Will Leitch) tell me neither of them would have been able to get him admitted into Vassar College.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:56 am
Did I click on to Yahoo Personals without knowing?
January 10th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
As much as I flash my SAT/ACT scores and junk size around Deadspin, it’s all public knowledge.
January 10th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Ben – W-2’s get the chicks.
January 10th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
WC – I have no doubt about that. That was part of the move out to Denver, big raise. Engineers who can actually speak in public and communicate their ideas get compensated handsomely.
January 10th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
High bandwidth usage? Apparently only one tall basketball player per picture TBL.
January 10th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
I’d be a little more impressed with that dunk if didn’t take about 5 steps before and after he dribbled. Seriously, even NBA refs would call that. That being said, anytime you dunk on a guy a foot taller then you, it’s pretty sweet. I wasn’t sure that Hansbrough had the athleticism to play in the NBA but he might have enough — certainly more then Kevin Love that’s for sure.
January 10th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
where is the Butler love?????
January 10th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
I love how you made this photo so large.
January 10th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
And I loved the flatfooted dunks in the highlights – very impressive.
January 10th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Tyler Hansbrough has turned into a frog – this does not bode well for North Carolina’s tournament aspirations.
January 10th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Nice 3 step dunk by Hansbrough… Its laughable all the attention he gets. Congrats for dunking on a human giant with the coordination of a 5 year old, regardless of the blatant travel.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Are you kidding? The only way to stop Hansbrough is to lynch him in a back alley.
