UFC 80: Rapid Fire Takes Place This Afternoon/Tonight
MMA, Video January 19th. 2008, 12:57pm
The UFC is back in England today.
UFC 80 [official site] features “The Prodigy” BJ Penn and Joe “Daddy” Stevenson battling for Sean Sherk’s vacant lightweight title. With Sherk under suspension for testing positive for steroids after his last title defense, Penn and Stevenson have been given a chance to rise to the top of the lightweight division.
What makes tonight’s fight a little different? Since the fight is in New Castle, England there’s a time difference - and unlike UFC 75: Champion vs. Champion, which took place in London and aired via tape delay for the American fans, tonight’s fight is available live at 3 this afternoon. You can also order it tonight in the UFC’s usual PPV slot at 10pm.
TBL said I could order the 3pm showing and drink some beers if I eat all my vegetables and finish my blogging in time!
Second billing this evening goes to Gabriel Gonzaga and Fabrico Werdum. This is a rematch for Gonzaga and Werdum as they originally met in 2003 in Brazil. When last we saw Gonzaga lost to now-retired heavyweight champ Randy Couture at UFC 74, back in August. Werdum last fought in the UFC in April against Andrei Arlovski. He too lost. This fight is huge for both fighters as they are both coming off high-profile losses and trying to make a name for themselves in the upper-echelon of the heavyweight division .
The other guy to keep your eyes on tonight is Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis who is on a 5 fight win streak. For an idea of what a guy nicknamed “The Irish Hand Grenade” is all about, here’s his last fight. (MySpace)
Update: I forgot how to load a video on Wordpress there for a second. Now you don’t even have to have a MySpace account to see the violence!

i’m not a big fan of davis, he can’t do much on the ground. he is good at taking punches (note the sarcasm).
i predict stevenson over penn in a decision.

“i predict stevenson over penn in a decision.”
That made me LOL. Penn by 2nd round TKO.

Penn is a staple at winning tonight and anyone willing to take action, call me. Hand Grenade is a force and reminds me of War Machine from this season of The Ultimate Fighter. Unfortunately the GF is not willing to sit through UFC 80 so now I am counting on you for updates.

@Johnson - Bad News Bears friend - The roommate and GF are both gone for the afternoon so we’ll be watching the tape-delay feed this evening. There will be a full recap tomorrow though.

Oh yeah, as the guy writing the posts I should have probably made a pick or something, right?
Penn by submission in the 3rd.
Gonzaga by stoppage in the 2nd.
Davis by stoppage in the 2nd.

I really love the UFC but the younger fighters make me sick. I watched the first one where Royce Gracie choked out everyone but the announcer and what I took from the first UFC, and the next five or six, were the fighters respected everyone involved. You NEVER, EVER seen a fighter talk smack or disrespect anyone in the fight game. Gracie helped everyone of the fighters he beat back to their feet after a submission. He was always high class. Tank Abbott was the first fighter I saw who started talking crap. I liked watching his fights, but never liked him. Almost EVERY fighter is like Tank Abbott now without the drunkeness. There are some fighters(Penn, Hughes, Couture to name a few) that show respect, but most of the fighters are cocky assholes and it is not the way the Gracies(Gods to me) started the business. Why are most fighters like this?

Platts-Come on now, they are fighters…Cockiness comes with the territory. Don’t be such a pussy. Gracies were good a long time ago, nothing now.

Unfortunately, the cockiness is what sells tickets. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they were “encouraged” to do it. Just like in boxing. It’s more a business now than love of the sport. That’s probably why Royce got busted for ‘roids.

Tito Ortiz doesn’t respect your inability to relate to his “showmanship.”

Penn’s theme music has to be the most anti-energy song to ever be used by anyone with a beating heart.

Tito Ortiz is off suckin The Donald’s Cock on The Apprentice. He is hot garbage. Is he still licking Jenna Jamison’s Ahole, or is he gonna score with The Donald’s Sassy Daughter? I must admit, I dont respect NY’s own Matt Sera. He might be tough, but he is a little dude that talks way too much trash. Who won in the Hugh’s vs St. Pierre, and Liddel vs. Silva? Good fights?

St Pierre and Liddell

@Owl X. How does me not liking the shit talking of a fighter make me a pussy? Maybe I should just lower myself to your status and say, “Since I know you like licking another balls, you are a fag.” Nothing wrong with being a fag though, Owl X. So I guess that really isn’t shit talking. Keep on licking balls.
