Your College Basketball Post: A UNC-Maryland 2nd Half Live-Blog!
College Basketball January 19th. 2008, 4:48pm
I’m not going to lie to you guys - I’ve been watching a movie. Shark Vs. Eagle. If you like Flight of the Conchords, you’ll love this movie because it stars Jemaine Clement who accounts for approximately 1/2 of FOTC. After watching this movie I’ve decided I need to visit New Zeland before I die because it must be the most amazingly awkward country ever. Based on FOTC and Eagle Vs. Shark, I have no choice but to believe that their’s is a culture of Napoleon Dynamite impressions and bad sweaters.
Wait, where was I?
Oh yeah, college basketball.
I haven’t been watching it this afternoon, but I’m sure you have been so here’s your post. I just turned on the Maryland-UNC game and I’m going to watch to the end as the number 1 ranked team in the land currently trails 48-39 with 17:30 to go.
So here’s how it will work. If there’s a score you want to see in this post, comment it or e-mail me and I’ll toss it up. I’ll start it off:
(6)Georgetown 84, Notre Dame 65 - Maybe it’s college football residuals, but I just like to see ND on the short end of the stick.
Onto the UNC-Maryland live blog!
16:01 - Turnover and fast break basket - Maryland extends the lead to 51-41. Hansbrough misses on the other end.
15:29 - We’ve got a foul on UNC and we’re going to break. Thank God, I needed a break.
Commercial break: All new Extreme Home Makeover this week - nice.
And we’re back! Maryland hits 1-2 to push the lead to 11. Hansbrough answers. UNC down 9.
14:42 - Hansbrough just misses a chance at a 3-point play and then misses the first freebie before making the other. I crack my 3rd Gennesee of the afternoon.
The lead is down to 7.
13:52 - Ty Lawson with the jumper - Timeout Gary Williams. I just don’t know if Maryland can hold off a UNC rally. It’s not looking too good right now.
Look at that student body! *Screams*
13:20 - Huge shot by a player whose name I do not know. And Hansbrough answers!
12:30 - The teams just traded 3’s, followed by the big man with another jumphook and a flush by Hansbrough….
This is getting crazy. I don’t know the names of any of the players except for Hansbrough so luckily he’s doing most of the scoring. I’ll have to look this game up so I can drop a name or two. Luckily no one is reading this.
11:07 - We’re going to another timeout with UNC on the doorstep trailing 57-59. Wayne Ellington hit 2 huge 3’s in the last 2 minutes. (This is much easier when I’ve got the names in another window)
And we’re back from commercial late! Hansbrough tied it up when we were being advertised too.
Maryland goes back up 2 on a hoop by James Gist.
Oooh! The Terminal will be on ABC this week! Slit my wrists - that movie was horrible.
We’re under 10 to go - Maryland up 63-59.
Ginyard goes to the basket and misses buy Carolina collects the board and Hansbrough ends up with a chance for and old-fashioned 3….and it’s down to 1.
Tyler Hansbrough is intense. I think that should be noted.
8:30 - And Wayne Ellington ties it up at 64.
8:00 - Bambale Osby ties it up at 66. Damn - ESPN.com is even behind me at this point. Come on! I’m trying to entertain my loyal readers here!
We’ll pick it up with 7:18 to go and Tyler Hansbrough getting a rest.
Eric Hayes makes his free throws to put the Terps up 66-68.
OK Tyler, get back in there. His 30 second rest is over. You know your important when your rest consists of sitting down and then standing up.
Deon Thompson tied it with a lay-up.
James Gist with the flush.
5:34 to go and we’re tied up at 70 all.
4:42 - TIME OUT! Is there anything worse than all the timeouts at the end of a college basketball game? Maryland 72-70.
We just found out that there are a lot of Johnsons - Thank you, ABC.
Will Who? Graze? Whatever his last name is he hit his first shot of the game - a 3 - to put Carolina on top 73-72.
TIME OUT!
Ooh, Brady Quinn looks very sexy in this commercial. What a tool.
3:30 - There’s a foul and Vasquez ties it at 74.
Great ball-movement by the Heels ends in a 3-point play by Danny Green. UNC is up 4.
2:15 - Maryland gets it back to 2.
1:26 - 78-76, Carolina up.
Greivis Vesquez ties it up with 2 free throws.
Green can take his man at will and almost pulls off a crazy reverse lay-up. It would have been sweet, but it missed so who cares.
James Gist goes to the line with a chance to put Maryland in the lead.
First free throw - good
Second - good!
80-78 Maryland
Around :55 - Hansbrough bullies his way to the basket and ties it. What a beast.
:43.4 - 80-80
Maryland takes the lead on a nearly-broken play - Osby lays it in for the lead!
Ellington missed a 3 and the ball goes out of bound, but UNC retains possession. I think Tyler Hansbrough might get a touch here with 10.7 to play.
Loose ball and Maryland comes up with it, but a jump ball is called.
0:01.7 - UNC ball - one shot to tie or win… here we go…
Ball out in the corner - Hansbrough gets it squares and….MISSES!
The Giants Win The Pennant! The Giants Win The Pennant!
Maryland has upset the #1 team in the nation!
That’s all - 1 post to go today.

Erin Andrews, that is. Not you, Ron, but you’re doing a great job.

Live by the jumpshot, die by the jumpshot.
Kudos to the camera man for capturing the crying UNC girl in the stands. Her tears of failure make for great entertainment.

Meanwhile, Tennessee is trying its damnedest to blow it against Ohio State. OSU actually looks pretty dang good… Othello Hunter is a beast.

Also, last time I checked, Hansbrough has never had a jump shot to begin with. Dialing him up for a jay is just dumb.
January 19th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Agreed - I always love seeing fans upset.

Tennessee holds on - yippee!

i’ve been to new zealand before, and you’re pretty much on point. there’s a whole lot of sheep there and funny accents.
January 19th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
Playing 40 minutes is overrated, even Tyler Hansbrough gets to sit down for a few seconds.
January 19th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Cuz, You could post dead air the rest of the weekend. Because the only thing I can look at is that picture of the Atlanta Hawks cheerleader. Kudos.

If Tyler was a pimp, he would have had his ass all up on that hip with a finger slipping in the crack.
But we all know Dicky V is a good girl and doesn’t allow 3rd base action until Coach K stops by.

I’m pissed that someone cleaned up Jason Smith’s Wikipedia page. Probably his Ma.

Question–Will Hansbrough’s game translate to the NBA? Will he be any good at the next level? I’ve told myself no several hundred times already, but by watching the guy over and over and over and over again, he somehow gets the job done every game. His shit is unorthodox on every level, but again, he gets the job done. Double teams? Terps shut him down in the first half. Second half he beat ‘em. Jump shot? Surprisingly rangey. The dude’s obviously got an NBA body, but skill-set? No. Not the slightest. But then again, if he’s producing night-in and night-out every game, doesn’t he have to have some sort of valuable skill set?
So, everyone, your thoughts? My boys’ and I were arguing about this the other night. My friend said he might even garner an All-Star year or two in the future. That’s pushing it.
