Redskins Fans, Already Sour on Jim Fassel
NFL January 24th. 2008, 1:04pm
Here’s a new one – the Redskins are close to hiring former Giants coach Jim Fassel (career record: a Coslet-like 58-53-1, 2-3 in the playoffs) but have yet to pull the trigger. That hasn’t stopped fans from scooping up anti-Fassel domain names such as FireSnyderandFassel and FireJimFassel. Repeat: He’s not even the coach yet.
While all signs point to the Skins getting Fassel – and passing on Joe Gibbs’ assistant coach Gregg Williams, whom they interviewed four times – initial reaction from the die-hard Skins fans over at Extreme Skins is overwhelmingly negative. For the first time that we can recall, the masses have turned on Moneybags Snyder. Sweet. Who’s bringing the popcorn?

Redskins fans are idiots.
They have somehow convinced themselves that barely squeaking into the playoffs two out of the past four years demands continuity. Contiunity with a guy who alienated his Buffalo team when he was coach there and didn’t make the playoffs once.
I don’t know if I would blow things up to hire Fassel, really only the Chin is worth doing that, but Fassel is a better hire than Williams
January 24th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
I’m laying 2:1 odds that SVPS bought up one of those domains.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Why the anti-Fassel sentiment? Wasn’t this guy coaching in the Super Bowl not all that long ago?
January 24th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
i dont understand why the chin isnt jumping at any jobs(not ATL)to take the head coaching jobs. i thought he was going to coach again.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
412, thank you, that’s what everyone in DC is always saying they want but for some reason a loser head coach is a better candidate then a guy who has actually been to a Super Bowl.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
Irish, because watching girls high school basketball is way too exciting to give up.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
@412 true, but he is not Joe Gibbs.
Timeout! What? I already called timeout? You can’t do that? Since when? Oh. Really?
January 24th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
i could understand volleyball but basketball, no
the chin needs to comeback and coach. he doesnt fit in with boomer or dan the isotoner man
January 24th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Did anyone hear Merrill Hoge blast the chin on the radio yesterday morning in Pgh? Paraphrasing, Merrill stated Cowher had no clue how to handle/coach the quarterback position and took credit for a lot of successful decisions made by his assistants.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
as a giants fan, i still love fassel. wish he got to help eli develop.
that being said, i’m pretty sure his daughter is hot. at least she was five years ago. someone should look into this.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Didn’t Merrill get shipped out of Pittsburgh to Chicago when Chin was coach?
I take what he says with a grain of salt.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
cbh49er – I agree, there is some history there that must be considered. The discussion came about as a result of Cowher’s comments about Rivers during halftime. Merrill went on to lay into Deion about his “toughness” comments toward LDT.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
The problem for the Redskins is that now they can’t hire Gregg Williams nor can they hire Jim Fassell and both Carroll and the Chin have said no.
So who’s left?
And I’m surprised Fassell, a pretty good coach in NYC, hasn’t had another shot at a HC gig till now. He’d have made a good fit in ATL.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Roethlishotdog, Roethlisberger also didn’t have many kind things to say about Cowher either, which I found odd as well, considering he won a Super Bowl with Cowher as coach.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
As a Giants fan I am BEGGING Washington to hire Fassel!
January 24th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Fredo, why can’t they hire Fassel?
If you think it’s because of fan backlash, I live in the DC area, that place will still sell out no matter how much the fans get pissed at Snyder.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Seven years ago is an eternity in today’s NFL. Besides, the Giants got a lot of favors that year, with choke jobs from the Rams and Vikings.
His recent history as an offensive coordinator with the Ravens suggests the Redskins would be much better off giving Gregg Williams a shot.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
@ Roethlishotdog – No, didn’t hear that, but I tend to agree. Granted, Cowher did eventually win a Super Bowl. But, he fell in love w/ Kordell Stewart’s athleticism and burned far too much time waiting for him to morph into an actual quarterback. Cowher’s best quality was his ability to spot talent and make the necessary personnel moves (outside of, you know, getting rid of Kordell). I wish him well wherever he goes (except Cleveland!), but I don’t think this guy was the Bill Walsh/Vince Lombardi some have made him out to be.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
s1, what about Williams recent history, two years ago, of coaching a shitty defense?
January 24th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
“For the first time that we can recall, the masses have turned on Moneybags Snyder.” TBL
I’m confused. When have the masses ever liked Snyder?
January 24th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
KC, me too, Snyder has pretty much been universally hated for the past 7 years.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
I think everyone is missing the big picture: Skins fans are idiots, they had a good team once, for about 8 years, and they think by birthright they should be in the Super Bowl every year. Living in DC, after growing up in Pittsburgh, it shocks me to learn how little most of the fans here understand about the game. And they seemingly get dumber every day.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
no Snyder fan. he’s ruined the Redskins.
wait for the Super Bowl to be over…talk with Giants DC and Patriots OC. get some NEW blood in DC! no more retreads.
I did love Gibbs I, but he lost me after the Buffalo debacle this year. then they go out and win 4 in a row to make the playoffs, then he quits. jeesh. the drama.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Matt Millen agrees that this would be a great hire.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
until snyder can stay out of the way, the skins will always be in their current state of flux.
teams that alternate lucky playoff appearances with HORRENDOUS years are not good football teams. if they played in the AFC, they wouldn’t even sniff the playoffs which might have facilitated an earlier change. but since they get to the dance every other year, they think they’re an improving team.
the redskins’ roster sucks and theyre $20 mil over the cap. i dont care if lombardi was coaching and buddy ryan was DC and bill walsh OC, this team wouldnt be any better than 9-7. snyder fucked up big time.
the funny thing is, vinnie cerrato keeps getting promoted (seriously, this dude shouldnt be employed in the NFL let alone getting a raise).
January 24th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
why is it all snyders fault? The job he is doing as an owner had made the redskins the second highest grossing team in the NFL, second to Dallas. most owners are following Snyders lead in the business aspect of the league. its not his fault his coach had nascar on his mond more than coaching the team
January 24th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Don’t know that it’s all his fault, but there have been some horrendous signings under Snyder’s regime:
Antwan Randle El
Brandon Lloyd
Adam Archuleta
Jeff George
Jeremiah Trotter
Bruce Smith
Deion Sanders
January 24th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
jeff loria has the most profitable MLB team (marlins) does that make him a good owner for holding a firesale every 4 years and having a team payroll thats less than a few SINGLE players make?
theres a difference between being a good businessman and a good owner. when you own an NFL team, chances are pretty damn good you know how to turn a profit in one way or another. and if you can pony up the $1 bil to be an owner, chances are good money isnt an object. an owners job is to build a winning organization, and snyder has failed on all accounts other than his bank account.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
1. No one has ever liked Snyder in DC. Except for Tom Cruise.
2. I think the Skins’ should hire Fassel. If they are crazy enough to ignore their players, and their fans, and common sense, they deserve it. Can’t be any worse than the Steve Spurrier experiment.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
SVP, Redskins fans aren’t worth listening to in the first place. Why should fans determine who your coach is?
Players are paid to play, not make decisions on who the coach should be.
I am just amazed at this love affair DC is having with Gregg Williams, the same guy they hated last year after the defense stunk up the league.
January 24th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
412, forgot Brunell
January 24th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Again, Fassel may not be the answer. But, I’m still not sure how a coach who was successful enough to take his team to the SB would be so catastrophic. You would think they were talking about bringing in Rich Kotite!
January 24th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Don’t forget the same media (NYC) that pegged Fassel a loser pegged Coughlin a loser up until this week?
Any other coach that was the AP coach of the year, then went to the super bowl in one coaching tenure would be getting offers left and right.
January 24th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
That is good. I’m not nuts. TBL’s statement confuses me.
January 24th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Francesa on FAN in NY says that Fassel was going to get the job if Gibbs did not come back four years ago. Which would explain the reason he is back in play. Plus I think the Raven thing was clearly a case of Billick being in control of the offense the entire time he was there.
January 24th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
The Ravens haven’t had anything on offense since Jamal Lewis had his stint at Shawshank. I think this has to do more with the personnel than any shortcoming of the offensive coordinator.
January 24th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Williams made his bed last year when he presided over a defense that had a coach for cornerbacks and a coach for safeties who didn’t talk to each other and would hold seperate meetings instead of meeting as one defensive backfield. Why would anyone want the potential of having the entire team ran that way?
January 24th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Fassel doesn’t deserve the blame for the offense last year for the same reason that Neuheisel wasn’t given the blame this year; the offense started and finished with Billick. I really don’t believe the Ravens were ever the same from the time Billick allowed a struggling Elvis Grbac to keep his job when he came back from injury even though Randall Cunningham had the offense playing much better than Grbac ever did. And then he told everyone he was placing Grbac back into the starters role because he was better. You can lie to the media and the fans, but you can’t lie to the players.
January 24th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
I’m sure Redskin fans will be happy to know that Fassel was passed over for the Chief’s OC job last week.
January 24th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Herm Edwards is an idiot anyway.
But he does like his donuts hot!
January 24th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
lol@^^^^^
January 24th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
atleast it’s not Spurrier… I guess
January 24th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
I’m still shocked they didn’t even try to interview Brian Billick. He has a much better record (80-64 reg. season, 5-3 post-season), plus he actually beat Fassel in that Super Bowl. He wouldn’t have to move that far (Baltimore to D.C.) plus he has said he wants to keep his family in the area. Sure the Ravens were 5-11 this year, but they were 13-3 the year before (largely because he fired Fassel from his staff and called the offense himself). If they can convince Greg Williams to stay and coach the defense, The ‘Skins would be pretty good. And this coming from a guy who hates Billick.
