PM Roundup: Introducing T Dunks
Baseball, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings, NBA, NFL, Race, Video January 25th. 2008, 2:58pm
Just a reminder – Patrick Imig from Joe Sports Fan has the reigns this weekend, so schedule your plans around it.
* We usually don’t like montages, but this guy is hilarious. It’s Tim Duncan’s podcast where he morphs into the gully T Dunks. Nice to learn that he’s already “knocked that down.” And he’s talking about Eva Longoria, not a 10-foot bank. (Rosenberg Radio)
* Vegas is burning! The Monte Carlo hotel is on fire (the high roller suites!) and CNN just reported one wedding was ruined. (LA Times)
* A blogger emailed the ESPN ombudsman about the Dana Jacobson situation. Here’s the response. (Tirico Suave)
* The Falcons finally found a sucker to coach the team. (EMQB)
* Tips if you need a big screen TV for the Super Bowl. (Consumer Reports)
* A former Providence player you’ve never heard of has a bobblehead. (CSTV)
* Racial turmoil among construction workers at the site of the Washington Nationals new stadium. (Scott Van Pelt Style)
* Men who like vodka are falling in lust with Dana Jacobson. (Eddie Kranepool Society)

Has anybody stayed at the Monte Carlo? It’s too high rolling for the low rollers and too low rolling for the high rollers.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
What you do is buy a big screen and hook it up, invite people over for the game and charge them about $50 bucks a head (or enough so the cost of the TV is covered) and then raffle it off at the end of the game. Then you will have a big screen for the big day at no cost to you.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Never. Last two stays were at Hard Rock.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
The roof. The roof is on fire. We don’t need no water let the burn. burn , burn , burn!
January 25th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
I already have an HDTV but its older and too small, so I’ve been looking at new ones. I’m thinking 46″, 1080p, I like both the Samsung 61/71 series and the Sony Bravia. Anyone have anything good/bad to say about either one of those. The Samsung had some handshake issues with HDMI, but I’ve read those are fixed.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
stayed at the Flamingo Hilton and New York New york, which is my favorite
also, maggs 50 bucks a head is way too much…how is your boy magglio ordonez doing huh maggs, juicer juicer
January 25th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
I am staying at the Luxor in March, anyone stayed there?
I am also looking to get my first HD TV and when I saw the 32″ Sony at Best Buy it was decently priced and looked very crisp.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Never stayed at the Monte Carlo, and I guess unless they get it under control over there, I won’t get a chance! Oh well, Bellagio will have to suffice, I suppose.
By the way, TBL, we were going to find a sucker sooner or later, even if it meant going to the high school ranks. So far he’s saying all the right things and looking good. Heck, we even got a DC! Now we just need to hope we don’t blow the draft (we will).
Oh and I guess I haven’t mentioned it, but I’d probably take a whack at Dana Jacobsen, and not just because of the vodka thing, but that doesn’t hurt… Why the hell not? She’s not the most hideous thing out there… Could be a fun ride.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
@irish
Then you could charge $20 and invite more people…
$50 a head is too much? Try reserving a table in a bar for that much.
Also, Jose Canseco is credible now? That’s a new flash to me. Usually when you attempt to extort someone your credibility goes out the window.

You guys were in Klosterman’s aticle on ESPNs frontpage

January 25th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
irish – No love for the “Rays”?
January 25th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Klosterman didn’t even compare TBL to an episode of Saved By The Bell or a Fugazi album. I feel cheated.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
@miker
How hip and edgy of him.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
The video all the way at the bottom should have made the afternoon roundup:

coop – my parents just bought a 46″ 1080p Samsung. I think it’s the 71 series. They picked the Samsung over the Bravia. It’s incredible, but I doubt you could go wrong with either.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
More chess violence. When does it end? When does it ever end!?!
January 25th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

January 25th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

January 25th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
It seems this here blog has reached the big time. Are you going to ride out into the sunset TBL? Hang ‘em up and go out on top?
January 25th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Speaking from experience, the Luxor blows.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
asu-for you 70 an eighth
January 25th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
re Luxor. Rooms are crap and the atmosphere is bad. However, if you’re into prop comics, it’s the place to be.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
h8r I can’t believe you got rid of Gheorge Muresan.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
@irish: for that price it better be some Maui Wowie, Northern Lights, or Purple Thunder.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Chuck Klosterman got the tip from a Va. Tech student’s Facebook page.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
dont buy an HDTV smaller than 42″…also dont buy lcd…buy plasma…if you cant afford a 42″ all at once go to billmelater.com and find a deal there….also make absolutely sure that you have multiple hdmi inputs on the back of the tv…do not buy hdmi cables…they are expensive, but they come with directv rcvrs and new dvd players…dont let the big box hourly geeks talk you into it…no matter what…also…no extended warranty purchase is necessary…1080i if at all possible…if you follow these suggestions you wont be pissed a year from now
January 25th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Bally’s is where its at…rooms are good enough, cheaper than most and right in the middle of the strip so you are close to every other casino
January 25th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
I prefer Samsung HDTVs. LG isn’t bad. The newer Sharp models are nice.
Not high on Sony.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
klostermann sources are funny…i was listening to radio in LA yesterday and they were talking about Allison Stokke photo as if it just came out….wasnt that like six months ago…mainstream media blows
January 25th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Ombudsman: “I also think ESPN personalities should not attend roasts.”
This was a fucking ESPN sponsored roast of two ESPN personalities.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
I have a Samsung as well…this may sound gay to some of you, but purchasing a flat screen tv for how it looks when it is OFF is just as important as purchasing it for what it does when it is ON
Think art…you want something that you wont mind staring at when it is the focal point for an entire room
January 25th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
people like you get taxed, people like cbh or maggs get it for 45
January 25th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
I’ve stayed at The Palms, Treasure Island, Hard Rock (multiple times), MGM (multiple times), and Flamingo (multiple times). Hated the Palms (haven’t been there since the expansion though), the Flamingo pool is underrated and it’s pretty cheap, but as long as you don’t mind being off the Strip the Hard Rock is the place to be.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
my man, you got a little love from Klosterman today. almost as good as a Lozo mention.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
also, while in Vegas go to the Stratosphere and do the Big Shot at the top of the needle. One hell of a ride but if you are scared of heights, do not do this.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Irish, nice, 45 is a great bargain for that kind of quality.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Mike Smith is going to coach the Falcons? But ESPN told us that they were trying to get Pete Carroll from USC!
Instead of covering the Reggie Bush book story.
That’s right. I’m riding it out until the very end.
January 25th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
jgp did you see the thing on Real Sports about that?
January 25th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
@cbh: I saw that Real Sports. NCAA has to sanction USC. Reg’s family was basically given a HOUSE. They basically admitted wrong doing when they settled out of court!
January 25th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Plus the audio tapes they played of the guy talking to Reggie Bush’s stepdad.
January 25th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
If Imig’s entrance music this week isn’t S.D. “Special Delivery” Jones, I’ll be disappointed.
January 25th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
I don’t have HBO anymore. Thanks for that.
By the way, was this Real Sports interview discussed on SportsCenter? I know ESPN has covered Real Sports interviews to death in the past (Donovan McNabb).
Of course, the same thing applies to books. ESPN obviously thinks that their own books about gay basketball players is more newsworthy than the closest thing we have to proof that a Heisman Trophy winning player for one of college football’s most revered programs was on the take.
January 25th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
JGP, since you feel so strongly about this have you emailed the ombudsman?
January 25th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
No response from the ombudsman from that yet. I was very disappointed that her January entry only dealt with Clemens. I asked her to address that as well as ESPN selling USC as the “best team in the country,” but have heard nothing so far.
January 25th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
It’s just like the Joe McKnight recruiting thing too. McKnight said that he talked to Reggie Bush during USC’s recruitment, which is a violation. Carroll said he misspoke and gave one of the lamest-ass “It was a three-way call and Bush was really talking to me” excuses I have ever heard.
If Bob Stoops would have done that, ESPN would have freaked. Instead, it was a non-issue after Carroll’s explanation.
By the way, what was Bush talking to McKnight (oops, Carroll) about? The likelihood that USC was going on probation for what Bush did.
January 25th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
JGP this isn’t mean to sound dick but it might but your crusade reminds me of Zodiac where the author kept trying to figure out who the killer was, long after eveyrone else had given up.
January 25th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
@Coop – I bought a Samsung 46″ (4661) and it’s a great TV. 1080p, 3 HDMI inputs (one on the side and 2 in the back), nice piano black finish. If you’re going to have a big TV in your room, you want it to look nice or at a minimum not be an eyesore. Got it off of Amazon.com for way below what the big box stores are charging.
I had an HDMI handshake issue, which kind of sucks when you’re 5 minutes into a movie and the pic drops out. It’s an easy fix though – download the software update onto a USB drive and plug it into the TV.
People have their preferences with LCD/Plasma, but if it’s going in a room that gets a fair amount of light you should go with the LCD.
