Next, Kansas State Will Beat Kansas in Africa
College Basketball January 31st. 2008, 10:02am
One of the best pre-game pieces of trash talk this season goes to K-State freshman Michael Beasley, who said on Tuesday: “We’re going to beat Kansas at home. We’re going to beat them in their house. We’re going to beat them in Africa. Wherever we play, we’re going to beat them.” Wednesday, he scored a game-high 25 points and the Wildcats, buoyed by a rowdy home crowd, took down the unbeaten Jayhawks, 85-74.
We tethered between last year’s LOST season finale (full post coming in the afternoon) and the game, but a few things jumped out at us:
1) Kansas looked intimidated. Not frightened, but just … not nearly as confident as it has throughout the season. The K-State defensive intensity was pretty incredible, and mostly due to the crowd.
2) The crowd had a profound effect on the result. Though we haven’t seen K-State in every game, we find it hard to believe their guards (particularly freshman Jacob Pullen) will play this well on a neutral floor in March.
3) Bill Walker is a phenomenal athlete. Doesn’t do anything great - except leap - but does everything good. The body of LeBron James (chiseled 6-6, 220, but plays like he’s 6-8) with the do-it-all effectiveness of a Scottie Pippen.
4) Is Beasley capable of pulling a Melo and carrying K-State on his back to a title? Let’s not go overboard. This was a rivalry game, the Jayhawks came in unbeaten and had won in this arena 24 years in a row. Did you know the K-State lost at home to Oregon, was buried at Xavier and Notre Dame, and lost to George Mason on a neutral floor? First, let’s see if there is a letdown this weekend against undermanned Missouri.

Impressive win by K St. Can’t believe KU’s guards were outplayed as badly as they were.
Melo had a LOT more support. Warrick, Duany, Gerry Mac. I don’t think it’s comparable.

I’ve only lived in the Midwest for a few years, but the funny thing is the perception of the schools around here (and I suspect nationwide). You’d swear around here that Oxford was playing “The U” last night, and you probably know which one was Oxford. I just find it kind of amusing. They’re both state schools. Roy Williams got KU in trouble (but it was after he left). But K-State is the “thug school.”

K State could win the Big 12 as they get Texas at home. Kansas plays at Texas and at A&M

Someone, please tell me: is this kid a legit NBA prospect? I’m not the biggest basketball fan but something about his just screams out “bust” when I picture him taking his game to the next level.
/probably wrong

Kansas State beat the piss out of KU.
And, yes, KU came out scared. Same old story with KU, when the pressure was on, all the offensive weapons went into hiding.
Beasley was contained inside most of the night so he just stepped out and shot the prettiest shots I’ve ever seen out of a big man. Effortless.
And Russell Robinson need not ever shoot the ball again. Play D. Pass the ball. Never, ever shoot again.

Is Kansas the basketball equivalent of Ohio State football? Nobody takes either of them seriously anymore.

mike nyc- i think he is legit. i hope he stays in school for at least one more year. but what do i know, every comment i say is wrong

mike and irish…are you talking about beasley or walker?
January 31st, 2008 at 10:36 am
Like Beasley a lot. He’s just a money player. He gets the ball the block and he’s too quick for most 6-10 guys. He gets the ball on the perimeter and he’s got a sweet stroke.
I liken him to Derrick Coleman - before he got fat and lazy.
Top pick? Not sure at this point. Derrick Rose looks like he could be a real stud with that speed/handle/size.

Actually I’m with you Mike,
He seems to be one of those “Too small for a four, too big for three.”
But there is a trend in the NBA with smaller PF’s, so we’ll have to see. He’s probably a top-3 pick.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:38 am
Mike he is legit. 6-9 230 with inside and outside game. The Melo comparisions are pretty applicable expect Beasley is a much better rebounder. No question he should be the first pick

TBL,
All things being equal, you go with size. Or at least, GM’s do. It probably depends on the team though.
Minnesota–Either
Seattle–Rose
Miami–Beasley
Memphis–Rose
Clippers–Rose
Philly–Beasley

George Mason crushed Kansas State, Kansas State crushed Kansas.
Thanks K-State, your making that win look better and better as the year goes on.

beasley reminds me more of elton brand/carlos boozer type PF. if he can gain about 30 lbs in a few years, he could be a force.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:42 am
Memphis is perfect for Beasley. First they have Conely and Lowry. Frontcourt of Pau, Bealey and Gay with Mike Mille and Conely in back. Darko, Lowry, Navarro off bench.
I think minnesota would go Rose. Miami also Rose.

Antawn Jamison is 6-9, 235–so there you go. Jamison’s junior year he averaged 22 and 10. The interesting thing is that the NBA forced him to the outside–he only made 8 3’s his entire college career. I’m hoping they let Beasley stay in the post.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:45 am
SM, you’re right.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:54 am
Actually, I think Miami goes with Beasley. Rose and Wade are fairly similar in size and even style to a certain degree, so I think they’d want a frontcourt player to pair with Wade. But who knows?
January 31st, 2008 at 10:55 am
KC Resident, you give Beasley a side of reach around with that plate of man crush?
January 31st, 2008 at 10:55 am
Bill Self will never win a national championship.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:58 am
Beasley is a stud and I think the top pick. Rose is sick but I would rather take a PF than a guard. He reminds me of Chuck Barkley.
Manhattan is the arm pit college town of the midwest. I was forced to visit because my mom lived for a few years and their ” Aggieville nightlife” consisted of a bar advertising an arm wrestling contest. I can not even make this up.
I advise not to travel to the “Little Apple” if you hate the color purple too.

^ Nor will 99% of college basketball coaches. Be careful what you wish for (see Kentucky, Smith).

^ sure
January 31st, 2008 at 11:13 am
how much does it suck to be a uncc fan. you had beasley coming, huggybear pries him away, then doesnt even stay the coach the kid. ouch.
January 31st, 2008 at 11:17 am
nsr what are you saying about tubby?
January 31st, 2008 at 11:23 am
Tubby Smith was run out of town and now Kentucky fans are paying the price. I don’t think an NIT Final Four is what they had in mind.
January 31st, 2008 at 11:25 am
ohhh gotcha, i thought you were saying he hadnt won a title i was confused.
didnt help he was black and playing in an arena named for one of the most notorious racists in sports history, cant tell me his skin color didnt have something to do with how quickly he was thrown under the bus
January 31st, 2008 at 11:40 am
This is ridiculous..K-State has two legit NBA lottery picks, had an insane crowd, and made 12-26 from three, and all of a sudden some posters say “KU is a fraud?” That’s absolutely ridiculous.
January 31st, 2008 at 11:43 am
They were also able to get Kansas in a lot of foul trouble, which is a great equalizer–much like turnovers in football.
I’m sounding like a KU homer. I hate Kansas.

“Melo had a LOT more support. Warrick, Duany, Gerry Mac. I don’t think it’s comparable.”
Fair enough but at least give credit where credit is due :). The Cuse doesn’t win that title without Josh Pace or Billy Edelin (who I thought was headed for a solid NBA career, anyone know what happened to him?)
January 31st, 2008 at 11:47 am
last i heard edelin was in the cba
January 31st, 2008 at 11:51 am
according to wikipedia he was in the cba as of 07 but i cant find him on the roster of the team he signed with. lol he got cut from a belgian team
