Poulter, Wearing Pink, Thinks He’s on Par with Tiger
Golf January 31st. 2008, 3:00pm
Ian Poulter is a golfer, and he occasionally rocks the all-pink look. Pink shirts can be cool. But with pink pants? The story here: Poulter recently said in an interview: “The trouble is I don’t rate anyone else. I haven’t played to my true potential yet. And when that happens it will just be me and Tiger.€ Ass. Now, he is saying he was misquoted. More cocky, golfers or bowlers?

Ian Poulter is one of the most refreshing golfers on the tour. He isn’t completely serious with his clother. He wears the Clarett Jug on his pants for every British Open. He should be appreciated in a tour filled with guys stale like Retief Goosen who just go out and wear the dad’s pleated khakis and mumble nothings to reporters.

Its different if he BELIEVES this. However, stating it in the media makes him another target for Tiger, fans, and other players to shoot at… The mental game of Golf is difficult enough without added pressure of stating Douche-ey ideas like this one… Moron.
What are the odds of Tiger getting him in Round 2 of the Accenture Match Play and running up a 9 and 8?

Poulter sticks out like a sore thumb when choosing characters for Tigers Woods ‘06.
January 31st, 2008 at 3:09 pm
whats wrong with this? the media asks for a challenger to tiger all the time, then roasts anyone who tries to say anything…its pathetic.
every pro golfer in the world’s top 30 is as good as tiger woods. the only difference is tiger can focus when he needs to. tiger isnt doing things that nobody has seen before, he just does it more often. its about dealing with nerves and honing in on what you have to do, and tiger is miles ahead of everyone in that dept.
if only phil mickelson wasnt such a massive pussy, then golf would actully have mass appeal to those who dont play the game obsessively.

And as I was reading the article about Pete Weber I noticed the next tour stop was Latham, NY – I got excited. Then I realized the article was about 6 years old.

Leave Poulter alone, it isn’t like he called out Tiger the way Rory Sabatini does. Poulter is good for golf and he has a great attitude.
He stated he can’t get to number one because of Tiger. What is he supposed to say?
BTW he is right about Justin Rose but Rose isn’t the only example. Steve Stricker is now a solid 3rd in the wolrd rankings when he was one of the worst players on tour just a few years ago. Henrik Stenson got all the way up to number 5 last season.
spencer, as usual is spot on.

If the other golfers can’t focus when they need to, that means they’re not as good. What does “i haven’t played to my true potential,” mean? I guess it’s good that he realized he’s an underachiever. Unless these cats have beaten Tiger in a major, they should just shut their trap. Be confident, but don’t open your mouth and be a douchebag.

Spencer, I like you, but you gotta be high as fuck right now to believe that.

What’s wrong with him saying this? It’s like the whole Plaxico Prediction thing. If Poulter is going to do anything in the sport, he’s got to have sky-high confidence, with a little realism sprinkled in. And he expresses that here…he says that he can be the best if he puts his mind to it (sorry for the cliche), but he also recognizes that Tiger is the greatest in the world. He’s not talking shit, he’s not putting anyone else down.
January 31st, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Looking at that photo, is it just me, or is Poulter overcompensating?
January 31st, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Poulter earned himself a TBL post. And, with that, his career has peaked.
January 31st, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Every golfer in the top 30 is not as good as Tiger Woods. What an absurd thing to say. Tiger wins more because he’s better. He wins at a record pace because of the intangibles.
If he didn’t have the intangibles he could still coast the next 15 years, win a bit more than anyone else, and then retire to his yacht with is sex pot wife.

Spencer – that argument is ridiculous. Please revise. But not as ridiculous as pantsman’s comment. Poulter is not refreshing. He is a metrosexual and by that I mean he’s gay. Also, remember when Poulter tied for 9th at the PGA Champ. in ‘06? No? Me either.
/s/ a guy who wears pleated pants and likes his golf classic (i.e. if you wear a mock turtle neck chances are I hate you)
January 31st, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Gangsta, Poulter was not calling out Tiger. He was saying number two is there for the taking if you string a couple of good years together Then it would be you and Tiger as the 1 and the 2. What is wrong with saying that?
If he was calling anyone out, it was Phil who is the current number two (the one Poulter is saying he is going to displace) so why does he have to beat Tiger to talk about never being able to be number one because of him?
BTW, Poulter is ranked 22 in the world.

BTW, no Kelly Tilghman on the PGA coverage today. Anyone know whats up with that?
Faldo isn’t there either for what it is worth.

A man in all pink should only be calling out, “Fabulous!”

@ Cuz
Poulter sticks out like a sore PUSSY when choosing characters for Tigers Woods ‘06.

Gonzo wins. Also, that guy is British.

i think some of my comments are being misunderstood. TECHNICALLY, in terms of striking the ball and putting, every top 30 golfer can make the same shots. Tiger isn’t no. 1 in driving distance, driving accuracy, ball striking, etc. but hes number one in birdie average and the scoring categories.
golf isnt about technical aspects, its about the ability to turn those techniques into scoring. all i was saying is that every top 30 golfer can hit it to within 5 feet from 200+ yards like tiger can. rory sabbatini routinely makes 50+ foot bombs on the greens. phil holes out more than tiger does from off the green. yet, these guys just cant put it all together like they can in practice.
plus…and this is really important…how often do guys have to play with the herd that follows tiger everywhere? where theyre dead silent while hes hitting, but moving around and making noise when tiger’s opponets are hitting?
believe me, tiger is great. hes the best overall golfer in the world by a large margin, but he doesnt have any unique skills that seperates him from his peers. he’s not like ben hogan or arnold palmer who could outdrive the field by 50+ yards. yea hes a long hitter, but the field is relatively level from a physical aspect.
that was my point in saying the top 30 is just as good

Two things: 1, Bret “Hitman” Hart is offended at this thread.
2, I hope Wilbon comes back soon and rips this guy a new one like he did Rory.
January 31st, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Ok Spence, I see, I think. You are saying that Scottie Pippen was technically as good as Michael Jordan but Jordan was better at putting it together in practice and not just in the game. And technically – insert MLB pitcher with 95 mph gas, sharp curve, decent change – was as good as Pedro in his prime, but Pedro just took better advantage of the situations he was given…this could go on…and take the fun out of these conversations.
January 31st, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Whoops…reverse that part about practice and the game.
January 31st, 2008 at 4:07 pm
How many other guys on tour can hit a 6 iron 210 from fairway bunker…all carry over water to 10 feet? In Canada, so it’s actually like 240ish!
January 31st, 2008 at 4:29 pm
He just admitted to being on peyote will giving that interview. He clarified it: “When I meant me, and Tiger, I meant just the two of us. You know. Brokeback?”*

@ TBL:
Laugh out loud !
January 31st, 2008 at 4:38 pm
rittyrich…yea, kinda, only basketball is an awkward comparison. but the pitcher one is dead on. a lot of guys have serious ’stuff’ (fucking hate that term…fuck you tim kurkjian) but can’t put it together in a game.
January 31st, 2008 at 4:44 pm
I see what you are saying spencer but I would rather look at it another way – that the reason they don’t put it together is because they really don’t have equivalent “stuff.” I think it’s a bit much to say this is 100% mental, but technically, you are correct. Damn, that was all over the place. And if that was all over the place, wait until my boss sees the report I’m about to turn in! Hey-O!
January 31st, 2008 at 4:46 pm
hahaha…no shit. im about to deliver a plan that ive been working on all day (judging by my comment volume…i havent been working that long). its pretty fucking awful, i just basically threw it together.
eh, whatever, im here till 7 tonite so what the fuck?

Dornoch, I feel you. Just seems like every golfer’s balls have doubled in size the last couple of years, and they all have something to say in regards to Tiger. If Pinky is the truth, then let him prove it on the links. Otherwise, I don’t need to hear from him.

rittyrich
your so wrong. If Poulter was wearing that and he was American, then he is metrosexual/gay by default. But he is British. Just like Nick Faldo. And as such, he is cool. It’s science.
C’mon. As a fellow Auburn grad I expect more from you.
January 31st, 2008 at 5:32 pm
excuse me. you’re so wrong.
