Top Shelf: Edmonton is a Fine City
NHL February 5th. 2008, 9:13am
Contributor Lee Diekemper recaps the night in the NHL. Jarret Stoll of Edmonton had two assists in an Oilers victory, and thus we’d like to honor the forward and his girlfriend, Rachel Hunter.
New Jersey 4, Pittsburgh 3 (OT): Zach Parise tipped in the game-winner 37 seconds into overtime, forging the teams into a fifth-place tie in the East. Meanwhile, right wing Arron Asham hasn’t fought in over a month. For good reason.
Phoenix 4, Colorado 3 (OT): Radim Vrbata got the game-winner in overtime, scoring off a scrum in front of the net. Meanwhile, assistant coach Rick Tocchet, who was on two years’ probation for a betting scandal that initially implicated Wayne Gretzky’s wife Janet Jones, may return soon.
Edmonton 5, Calgary 0: Good news: shutout victory over a likely playoff team. Bad news: leading scorer Shawn Horcoff will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. The center had 21 goals and 29 assists.

i thought maybe rachel hunter in bikini pictures after the jump, but that would be NSFW so i understand. Janet Jones still looks great as well. As for hockey, i got nothing.

This is shaping up nicely for the Wild to claim the NW division.
Hey CBH, when you went to the caps game, was it pretty easy to get good seats or did you just go for the nosebleed section?

Top Shelf: Heavy on the Stroll, Light on the Hunter
February 5th, 2008 at 9:41 am
Agreed, the wrong person has their shirt off in that picture.
February 5th, 2008 at 9:48 am
@PK, I let my roomate take care of it. He got them about a week before the game and the best he could get for 5 people was nosebleed, but they weren’t that bad. A little too expensive, $41 bucks each, and it didn’t help that the game we went to sucked.
Sportsgal, I love hockey!
February 5th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Now the Wild just need to trade for Marian Hossa, sign Gaborik to another deal, and watch the rest of the league squirm.
February 5th, 2008 at 9:51 am
@CBH, Yeah I was looking online and prices are ridiculous. I might just wait and see what the scalpers are offering. The Wild only come to town once a year and so I might splurge.
February 5th, 2008 at 9:53 am
You’re probably better off there than in St. Paul, pki. The cheapest I can find tix at the X is $135.
February 5th, 2008 at 9:55 am
The X is by far one of the best places to watch a game. I don’t know about paying that much for one game, but it was by far one of the best times I have ever had at a hockey game.

An NBA fan walks into a bar and an NHL game is on…
February 5th, 2008 at 10:00 am
Back when it first opened in 2000, last row seats (with the stools and a ledge in front of you to lean on… in other words, perfect) were $10 for every game. Those first 2-3 years I went to countless games, then they jumped the shark and it’s been impossible to get tickets the past couple years without a 2nd mortgage.
But yeah, I would have to say its THE best place to watch a hockey game, anywhere.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:02 am
If its not Ovechkin, it’s not worth talking about.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:05 am
SVPS – Sidney Crosby’s High Ankle Sprain disagrees.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:11 am
@cbh – Touche! Now I won’t have to hunt you down and tase you, bro…
February 5th, 2008 at 10:21 am
Damn Coyotes, and damn the referee’s. Some major BS in OT to Rob the Avs of a chance for 2 points.
Wild better get as big a lead now as they can, stastny’s back this week, and Smytty and Sakic will, hopefully, be back soon. If our coach doesn’t F it all up the NW is in trouble.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Much appreciated sportsgal.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:40 am
The scalper prices for Wild tickets blows my mind. I bought three tickets to Opening Night back in 2000 for $75 each ($10 face value). Now you can’t even get a sniff for less than $100. Crazy stuff!
S1Rweeze – If they sign Hossa, do they let Demitra walk?
February 5th, 2008 at 10:40 am
@sportsgal:
I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but I need Detroit to win. Especially against those NW teams like Minnesota, in regulation. My hatred for the Red Wings has to take a back seat for the good of the Avs.
And you never rubbed in the win from last week on me, I was surprised
February 5th, 2008 at 10:49 am
The Wild have a new owner that’s willing to spend… folks around here say he’s keen on getting Hossa and pairing him with Demitra and Gaborik, setting up the Slovakian Line of Doom or whatever. Which would be about 2394839 kinds of awesome.
@jibble – Clearly I missed out. You won’t get a free pass next time.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Hossa worries me. I don’t think he has the heart to match up with his skill.
And if they sign Hossa, who do they let go? Bouchard needs to stay, and Rolston (while streaky) is a steady influence.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:58 am
I try not to be too much of a douche on these hockey posts… I’m afraid if it gets out of hand in here, TBL will take them away! As for the game tonight against the Wild, I’m hoping for win as well. This is about as close as the Wings are going to get to playoff game atmosphere in the regular season.
Do you still feel like there’s a big rivalry between the Avs and Wings? Obviously it will never be as big as it was in the 90’s when there was so much bad blood between the two teams, but even now I don’t think fans view it as a real rivalry since the rosters have changed so much.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:18 am
I think the rivalry lost all of it’s steam when Lemieux and Crawford left.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Lemieux was definitely the catalyst for the rivalry. I hated him with a passion… one of the Michigan State bars here in Chicago plays the fight between him and McCarty at commercial breaks during Wings playoff games. It’s been 10+ years and people still get fired up!
February 5th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Which fight, the one where they dropped the gloves about 1 second into the game, or the fight where Lemieux turtled in front of the bench and McCarty beat the tar out of him?
February 5th, 2008 at 11:42 am
They show them all… it’s basically a medly of all the Avs/Wings fights, including the one between Vernon and Roy.

February 5th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Nice. Nothing better than goalie fight. Except maybe Shanahan clotheslining Roy.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:47 am
See, we start talking about the fights and now I’m watching all of them!!

I miss McCarty…
February 5th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Well I don’t mind good natured ribbing. There’s a difference between being an ass, and teasing in good fun.
I’ll always have a black spot in my heart for the Red Wings, but the rivalry is definitely diminished significantly. On my own blog I call them the Beige wings, because outside that flop Hasek there’s not really anyone to hate. Even Chelios has toned down his act. So yeah the rivalry is pretty much dead as far as on ice is concerned. It’s hard to Hate Zetterburg, Lidstrom, Datsyuk or really anyone else on your team.
It’s a far cry from Pretty boy Federov, or that coward McCarty.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:58 am
You just called my boy McCarty a coward?! It’s sooooo on!!
But seriously, watching those videos has me all fired up. That rivalry was one of the best in professional sports. Who wouldn’t want to watch players beat the crap out of each other like that during a game? I think the only way today’s Wings would start throwing punches circa 1996 is if someone tried to start something with Lidstrom.
February 5th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Not only was he a coward, but I actually think he’s so good at being one he taught that the trait to Phaenuf in his stint with Calgary.
Acting tough…check
Running at players who aren’t anywhere near the puck and not paying attention…check
Inflated ego enhanced by only going after players smaller than him…check
Backing down from someone who challenges him face-to-face…check
All Phaenuf has to do is “fight” someone by blindsiding him and then have the entire fan base think it was a fair fight, and his training will be complete.
Yeah i’ll watch them when I get home. I think the fan rivalry is still there, because we all were emotionally invested in those things. But as far as the players, well I think Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk are the only two players left from the Blood Feud, and Hejduk was a rookie in ‘01. If any player in hockey is least likely to hold a grudge, it’s probably Sakic. From the wings it’s Draper-picasso, Osgood and Maltby right? Not exactly the catalysts for controversy there.
February 5th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
You do realize that its a 3 way tie for 2nd in the East between Pitt, NJ and Philly right? I mean they are all tied for the division lead.
Lets get with the program…
February 5th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Jibbles, while I would love to get into a discussion on all the ways McCarty is NOT a coward, I’ve got a meeting in 10 minutes and won’t have time. He was an enforcer, he wouldn’t let anyone fuck with his teammates, and he’s one of the most phsyically impressive human beings I’ve ever seen in person. You should see the scars on his knuckles!
There are still a few guys from the team that were around at the start of the Blood Feud – Draper, Maltby, Lidstrom, Holmstrom and Osgood. I can’t believe that whole thing started 12 friggin years ago!
February 5th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Well after looking up his fights on Hockey fights.com (the greatest website ever) he at least went toe-to-toe with some real enforcers, so I’ll cut him a little slack. But his LeMieux fight was bad because he blindsided him, LeMieux takes a ton of crap for turtleing, but he had no choice he was blindsided.
Can we both agree that Phaenuf IS a coward though
February 5th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Yes, I concur – Phaenuf is a coward.
All this Avs/Wings talk has me hoping the Wings will play the Avs in the playoffs!
February 5th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Hopefully not in the first round, the way the Avs are going
