So, Who the Heck Are You Voting For?
Politics February 5th. 2008, 2:18pm
Assuming you are doing your part and hitting the polls today, which way did you vote? This can be a polarizing topic, so short and sweet works, and play nice. If you are to believe these early poll results, Obama is going to take California, and so is Mitt Romney. A Romney loss in Cali would almost certainly end his chances of winning the nomination; the same is not quite true for Obama. At the risk of alienating readers … we’re going the same route as Steven Spielberg, Magic Johnson, Jenna Jameson, Jack Nicholson, and Bill Simmons – we’re casting a ballot for Hillary Clinton.

TBL – I thought you were cool!
February 5th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
I am going to vote today – I am voting for Barry. can’t vote though until 6:30 in MN
February 5th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
“The Rock” Barack Obama
February 5th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Libertarian.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
when will you people ever learn?
February 5th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
I still haven’t decided between Mccain and Romney, though i still have a while here in California.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Democrats have got to be ecstatic. Romney is the closest thing to an actual conservative in this race, and he stands no shot against McCain, let alone Obama OR Hillary in a general.
I could see McCain winning the general and, even though he is far superior to BO/HRC, he is most certainly a RINO. McCain/Feingold, McCain/Kennedy, McCain/Liberman, etc.
I guess what I’m trying to say is: this is a win-win for the Democrats. Bastards!
February 5th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Just got back from marking the ballot for Obama in CA.
The idea of “Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton” for the presidency unnerves me.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
I voted for Ron Paul this morning. Twice.
Well the machine I used was from the ’50s, probably, and malfunctioned so I had to do a paper ballot instead. So it’s possible I voted for him twice.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Not a fan of Hillary’s pro-war stance in 2003 and mandatory health care (whereas Obama mapped out a plan with dollar amounts that seemed decent enough)…other than that they’re pretty much one and the same on most other issues
February 5th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
I can’t believe anyone would vote Clinton over Obama. Seriously TBL, there is almost no policy difference, and Obama kills in the intangibles. He inspires people to be their best. Hillary (and Bush) are everything that is evil about politics. Check this out (http://lessig.org/blog/2008/02/20_minutes_or_so_on_why_i_am_4.html).
p.s. I voted Ron Paul, but Obama is my clear #2.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
I haven’t looked at this race the same since Colbert was denied acceptance into the Democratic race.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
TBL,
Hillary? I thought you were Obama, for sure.
I can make the case for Obama by starting with everything wrong with her:
-Voted for the Patriot Act twice.
-Voted for Iraq
-More money from interests than anyone. Hello, corporatism!
-Never stood up for unions while on the board at the best union busting case study of them all…Wal-Mart
So, hawkish, Orwellian, indebted, and anti-union. Hmm…sounds like a neocon Republican, not a Democrat.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
jtlight, I’m with you, both in the explanation and your voting preference.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Agreed Signal to Noise, America needs to move on already.
I live in VA, unless I am woefully uniformed I don’t vote today and honestly I have no idea if I even do.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
I noticed you and O.J. share a similar taste in candidates TBL…how do you feel about that?
Voting next week…VA slacks.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Not surprised to learn TBL is a liberal.
Sigh!
February 5th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Anyway, see you guys in about 100 posts.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
I am voting for Obama in CA. My wife voted for Hillary.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
which candidate is going to legalize weed? until there is one…im not voting.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Obama and Paul.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Looks like Huckabee won WV
February 5th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Takes ballot. Flushes down toilet
February 5th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
a big article that came out that TBL referenced earlier was the amount of lobbyist money Clinton has received…close to a million. how are we supposed to doi anything different if we elect a candidate who is “business as usual” and bowing to corporations and not caring about general Americans.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
I still don’t see anybody that gets me excited.
Here’s something I thought was interesting though. I had read and heard that the Democrats had a chance to drive a wedge in the “family values” part of the Republican core this election. There are a lot of them disillusioned with the Republican party. They feel like they were used. A lot of them don’t think that the War in Iraq and corporate greed do not coexist with Christian dogma.
So what do they do? They turn it into a race between two candidates who scare the everloving shit out of them. One of my friends said that the only thing that could unite the Republicans is Hillary Clinton. I think he’s right.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
i took the candidate test from TBL, and i did not like the outcome of the results. im leaing towards Romney but will probably end up not even voting.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
BottomlessChips managed to work in “corporatism,” “hawkish,” “Orwellian,” and “neocon” all into one post. Somebody’s been keeping up on his Kos reading!
February 5th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Yes, TBL! You’re going up on whereIstand.com!
February 5th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
if clinton wins and becomes president it will drive the nation even further apart than it is…we need someone to build bridges not keep blowing them up.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
I’m Pimping for Paul
February 5th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Obama is not going to legalize weed.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Bottomless…is that true about them de-criminalizing weed? seems quite bold, almost TOO bold.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
I took the test TBL put up too and tied with Obama/Hillary….I think I like jtl’s stance on how to break the deadlock but im not 100% decided.
Is VA a closed primary? Cause I am a registered Independant so I may not be able to vote next week.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
I abhor the DailyKos and the Huffington Post. And I just bashed a Democrats, so won’t you give me some credit? I’ll call universal health care what it is, too: It’s socialized medicine. Can I get another point, MikeNYC?
You’re such an abrasive douche. Everytime I see you post it’s in a demeaning kind of way.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
If Hillary wins the nomination, the campaigns will be dominated by stories revolving around Bill… you think he hasn’t chased poon on every continent not covered in ice for the past 7 years? Of course he has; that’s why we love him.
That’s just what America needs: following up a blubbering idiot with Lewenski pt. Deux.
Obama ‘08!!!
February 5th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
This would most likely not benefit TBL’s candidate http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/01/ann-coulter-ill-campaig_n_84435.html
Either way thank Hey Zesus this is half not true:

February 5th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
In the primaries: Obama.
In the election: Paul.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Oh the irony is rich. Okay I’ll cut you some slack, you did just throw away your vote on Ron Paul, after all.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
yea, i agree. ANYONE, including an unconstitutional 3rd term for bush, would be better than Billary in office.
if we get everyone on here to write-in vote, we might be able to get irish in there. i say we all go that route.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
I’m voting for Obama for a myriad of reasons:
-He wants to get out of Iraq and has a realistic plan to do so (unlike Hillary and a far cry from McCain who said he sees another 100 years in Iraq. Seriously? Another CENTURY?)
-As a teacher, his attitude towards No Child Left Behind. He recognizes the potential positives that are buried beneath the bureaucratic BS. Hillary, however, wishes to just revoke the damn thing (which wouldn’t be too bad either). A definite Win-Win between those two.
-For a change in foreign perception of America. For one, I don’t see too many extremists (or young, potential extremists) that will see another Clinton and not associate it with the previous two names that have led this country for the past 20 years.
Secondly (and more importantly) when a young, impressionable kid from the Middle East looks up the American president and sees a face and reads a name that he can actually relate to…well, that’s the greatest weapon against terrorism that America could hope for, isn’t it? It would show that America is what it is: a country that is open to anyone, open to any ideas.
So, I’m voting for Barack Obama and doing so passionately. Whatever your opinions, get out there and do the right thing,
February 5th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
We’re talking about 28 straight years of Bush/Clinton if Hillary somehow won and got a second term. Oh dear God. I don’t know which of the two families is worse.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
I thought Bill Simmons was an Obama man. All that “he reminds me of Cyrus in the Warriors, or Dylan in 90210, or wait, he reminds me of the Artic Monkeys” talk, no?
Doesn’t matter whether it’s Barack or Hillary… you know they are both going to go with a Southern White Guy as their VP candidate. John Edwards must be chilling at home, waiting for his call.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
No Suprise to 412, I am caucusing for Obama tonight in Idaho.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
What? I was supposed to vote for candidates who believe in the nanny state and totalitarian policies? Or I was going to vote for candidates who strip my civil liberties? Voting for any of those people would be throwing away my vote.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
I wouldn’t look for Edwards to be Hillary’s VP. Word is they didn’t get along all that well.
But should Obama get the nod, Edwards would run with him. Their camraderie that was present during some debates was apparently more than just a show.
Where did I hear this word, you ask? I do not remember. But I know I heard/read/was told somewhere. How credible is that!
February 5th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Obama on Feb 12th here in Virginia.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Really TBL, Clinton? Then again the only thing worse than voting for Clinton is voting for Obama. I’m sitting the primaries out. I think McCain will ultimately win the Presidency and I’ll vote whomever is on the Republican ticket even though I’m more in tune with Ron Paul (except the war issue) than anyone else running. Actually I think Dr. Paul’s domestic policies he’s outlined in his campaign will have more of an impact on this country in 8 years or so than anything any of these other candidates is talking about. If you really want change get behind his stances. These big party candidates, especially Obama, stump for “change” but what the hell does that mean besides raising taxes on the so called “rich?” Answer – it means nothing except for a soundbite.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Don’t be shocked, after the love fest at the Cali debate, if Hillary wins the nomination that she picks obama as a running mate.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
As a liberal, I never thought I’d say this, but I feel like votes for Clinton are as bad as votes for any of the Republican candidates. Did anyone (aside from myself and mmonast) read the article about Clinton’s campaign funds? Her pockets are filled with money from lobbyists! Lobbyists are 75% of the reason why our government is so corrupt, and they affect the lives of Democrats and Republicans alike!
February 5th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Owl X I am a big Dem. and I hate that idea.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
If Obama becomes Hillary’s VP he’s done.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Being from Chicago, my vote should be obvious. Obama’s rally is being held in the Hyatt next to my office, all the satellite trucks are screwing up my wireless.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
So if all of Clinton’s money comes from lobbyists, where does all of Obama’s money come from? Or is he completely insulated from lobbyists?
February 5th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Obama’s money is discussed in the article as well. He doesn’t accept donations from lobbyists, but does accept donations from individual employees of lobbyists.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Really? THIS year? Where people are turning out in record numbers for the primaries? I’m keeping an open mind in regards to everyone’s position, this is definitely the year to be excited.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
The idea of “throwing away your vote” is exactly what is wrong with the voting process in this country and the media’s influence on it. Ug.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:58 pm

TBL stick to what you know. go find me another sweet clip of some bum ass espn anchor
February 5th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Obama knows exactly where his money is coming from and one way or another it is coming in waves from lobbyists, etc. of some kind.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Some media outlets are already calling some of the races for Paul!
February 5th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
@pkiguy-not sure I like it either, if it happens, it would be very interesting to see how Obama’s idealogies would fit into a Clinton presidency.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Hillary.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Obama today, tomorrow and for America!
February 5th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
TBL – Not that I care to see this blog become overly political, but I would be curious as to why you’ve decided to go Hillary. What is it about her experience/background do you like? Which positions of hers are most important to you? Any particular reason you don’t support Obama? When are you going to come to your mind and vote Republican? Just kidding about the last one (not really).
February 5th, 2008 at 3:05 pm

February 5th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Simmons initially wanted Hillary because he wanted Bill back in the WH but has switched to Obama because he likes the Wire and his fav character is Omar. I’m going for Obama too not for those reasons though, but I would vote Hillary if she got the nomination.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
tbl wifey > Sports Gal?
February 5th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Since obama is destroying everyone in the fund raising race, he can turn down a dollar here and there. He’s a very impressive candidate. I read his book. However, I won’t be voting for him. He’s far too liberal. I’m a Romney guy.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
I voted Romney, because he appears to be toughest on illegals–and that’s my hot-button issue
February 5th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Lobbyists? Who the hell do think represents interests in the Capitol? Lobbyists. They represent everybody. From the most liberal causes to the most conservative causes. They often represent your interest. The term lobbyist has become the omnipresent bogeyman in politics. It’s always the lobbyists’ fault. Who are the lobbyists? Faceless, nameless people that are easy to blame and hard to define. Fact is, lobbyists both help the system move forward and gum up the works.
I am tired of people just blaming “lobbyists.” It’s too cheap and too easy. If the worse you can say about a candidate is that they took money from lobbyists, you shouldn’t vote because you obviously haven’t taken the time to do any research and become well informed.
That said, I am voting for Monty Brewster since we don’t have open primaries in my home state.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

February 5th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
So basically by time VA get’s to vote next week everythign will already be decided anyway?
I’ll pass until November.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
CHB – Nothing will be decided in the Dem party for quite some time.
Could be the same for the Repubs IF Romney wins CA
Schnaars will be recapping it all tomorrow
February 5th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Thanks TBL.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
obama is my pick.
He’s the only one that I have some trust in. There’s no way I can vote for Clinton.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Obama Obama Obama when the primary rolls around to PA.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
@CBH Virginia’s primary is the 12th.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
They most definitely do not. They are fighting for tax dollars and regulation of industries in a way that improves their business.
So we end up subsidizing companies, and creating a marketplace conducive toward higher prices and bigger profit margins. I’d prefer the free-market; companies can sink or swim with no subsidies or tax breaks, and the barriers to entry aren’t made higher by government regulation in industry. We get lower prices, and technological advances.

February 5th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
best quote ever.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
BottomlessChips: Your problem is that you have a narrow definition of lobbyists. Lobbyists represent more than just companies. They represent political action groups, they represent companies, they represent movements, they represent everybody. NARAL has lobbyists, NOW has lobbyists, MoveOn.org has lobbyists…every group that has an interest likely has a lobbyist in the Capitol.
If I understand your argument correctly, you seem to be upset with corporate influence in our politics. You have every right to have that opinion and the corporate lobbyists may not represent your political interest, but I can guarantee you there are lobbyists that do represent your interests, whatever they may be.
In addition, if you are attempting to insinuate that I am a fascist by linking to that video, I would kindly ask to withdraw that comparison because you have no idea who I am nor any basis upon which to make that conclusion. I have only said that lobbyists are the bogeyman of everybody nowadays and most people have no understanding of what a lobbyist is or have a much too narrow definition that generally reads to be something to the effect of “a lobbyist represents interests that i don’t agree with.”
If that was not your intent with that video, then I have no idea what your intent was and I retract the above.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
I pulled for HRC, too.
Here’s my thinking: If we have an opportunity to bring the guy who led us through 8 insanely profitable years (92-00) back into the White House, why should we not go with him? And if you think that Bill won’t be intricately involved in just about every policy decision, then you don’t understand the Clintons at all. We’ll essentially have two presidents in office, which will come in very handy, especially when it comes to foreign affairs. (Yes, I know BC wasn’t exactly Teddy Roosevelt when it came to foreign affairs, but he does have more experience than anyone else running).
As for this Bush>Clinton x2>Bush x2>Clinton thing, that doesn’t bother me. But if it really bothers people, then I understand why they’d vote against HRC. I do have a fear that peope despise HRC so much that they either won’t vote or would vote for a Repub, but I’m banking on more professional women going out and voting than have ever voted before. And I’m hoping they outweigh the Middle America Clinton-haters.
February 5th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Obama in the 12th by TKO.
Edwards is holding out on endorsing either candidate until he gets a tip-off as to who will win the primaries. He’d hate to endorse a loser and lose his chance at getting that VP invite from the winner.

Well, Im in VA so I cant vote until next week. But when I vote, I will vote for Romney. I cant stand Hillary and McCain is annoying as hell.
And as for Obama, well I found this funny

February 5th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Fan’s Attic: I was not calling you a fascist. The video, toward the end explains the problem of corporatism with the military industrial complex quite well, which is why I linked to it. I think it’s a form of soft fascism, too, like Dr. Paul. Look at the medical industry; costs rise, and profits rise when we have managed care. Cheap, charity hospitals are no more. Who gets the shaft in this? The poor and the middle class.
This is different somewhat in those groups don’t work directly for corporations. But the line is close, and our medical and military complex’s power in this country would have Mussolini laughing that we have become what the Italians had.
I laughed at the debate when McCain condemned Paul’s “isolationist” policy as the same policy that drove Hitler to power. Hitler and Mussolini rose to power because of the blending of corporations and government, which is what we’re slowly moving toward. I’m not calling anyone Hitler, fascists, or saying we’re Nazis. Don’t misunderstand that part, anyone.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
i just saw a new poll out from Cali, it had Obama 13 points ahead of Clinton so it looks like he may indeed take it but we wont know for sure until wednesday morning. I can’t vote yet (gotta wait until april 22nd for the PA primary)
February 5th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Obama. It’s not about disliking Hillary. It’s about a unifying voice and presence our nation needs now, not tomorrow (eight years from now).
February 5th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Obama
If Hillary gets the nomination, I might vote for McCain.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
By the way, those are NOT “early poll results” in the Reuters link. That is a reference to a tracking poll conducted in advance of the election. “Early poll results” suggests actual returns from California voting booths, and that is most certainly not available on Reuters or any other news wire. You should edit your post.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
1/4th of the US population has only lived under a president named Bush or Clinton. HRC wins and happens to serve 2 terms, that number goes to 1/3 of the US population.
You want change? Vote Obama or Paul or McCain.
I’ll take Obama. At least in Indiana it will all be over by the time we get to choose, May 6th.
February 5th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
I don’t know any Republicans who like McCain, yet he keeps winning. Who the hell is voting for him? I’m a Romney guy but it appears he has no chance with the Huckster still in the race.
February 5th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Ross Perot
February 5th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Obama! Come on… Obama is clearly the guy. If Clinton is the candidate I’ll probably vote for McCain in the general election. Billary bums me out BIG time.
Obama is the man people. Get with it.
February 5th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
I have to say, I am impressed with how many people are voting for Ron Paul. He has my vote, but when he doesnt make it on the ballot that counts, my vote will go to Barry Obama. Even though I sell Chantix (anti-smoking pill) and he smokes about 2 packs a day!
February 5th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Sorry for the late response SportsGal, but yes it is at the Hyatt on Wacker
February 6th, 2008 at 8:59 am
Vote for Hillary or Obama if you dig socialized medicine, higher taxes and a weaker military.
