Two People Shot Outside Reliant Stadium after US Soccer Game
Soccer February 7th. 2008, 10:57am
Team USA battled Mexico last night at Reliant Stadium in Houston. More than 70,000 fans were on hand to watch the 2-2 tie in what was supposed to be a “friendly exhibition”. Before the game got underway, Landon Donovan noted that the games between the US and Mexico are “never friendly”.Â
That was a foreshadowing of things to come, to say the least.
Witnesses said a man approached two others and got into a fight. He pulled out a gun and shot each of them. One man was shot in the leg, and the other was shot in the back. Both of the men who were shot were taken to the hospital and are in serious condition. Police said the man was seen leaving the area in a 1980s model purple Bonneville.
With a history of Mexican fans booing the national anthem and the always tense subject of illegal immigration, perhaps a “friendly exhibition” need not happen in the future. I’m only being realistic, unfortunately.

I guess the found something worse than lobbing ziplock bags of urine onto opposing fans. Kind of makes my Dawg Pound domesticated by comparison.

The U.S. is closing the soccer hooligan gap! About damn time.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:02 am

February 7th, 2008 at 11:02 am

February 7th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Purple Bonneville? Sounds like one of Snoop’s crew did the shooting.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:06 am
next time they have one of these so called friendlys, we should have INS be the ticket collectors. that might help control the hooligan level
February 7th, 2008 at 11:06 am
1980s purple Bonneville? How many of those can there be, in the country, 5? 10?
@Nick: Next you’ll be saying they should have their own schools. They do have their own schools! Anti-dentite! /Seinfeld
February 7th, 2008 at 11:09 am
@irishmafia
Wow, dude
A) you assumed it was “the Mexicans” that did the shooting
B) you make yourself look so stupid with statements like that
go back to your shanty.

This offends you as a jew? No, it offends me as a comedian!!

There’s no mention of the nationalites of those involved, the shooter or victims. It may actually have nothing to do with the soccer match. How’s that for an interesting angle.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:11 am
I thought this was suppose to be a friendly.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:11 am
keith shut up and go cry about national signing day
February 7th, 2008 at 11:13 am
Hey, The G Man - I drive a ‘87 Bonneville, dick.

@irish
Are you one of those people who tries to win arguments by getting louder or possibly by getting physical? Thought so. Learn to spell, learn to use punctuation, try to clean it up a bit, attempt to make this site better instead of worse, oh and keep your racist spew to yourself. Pick up a book sometime.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:15 am
i understand why people would find irish’s comment to be a little insensitive, but at the same time, how many times do you hear of american soccer matches being marred in violence?
lets face it, the US could give two shits less about soccer. mexico lives for it and there is a long legacy of riots and what-have-you in latin american soccer matches. couple that with the racial tensions in souther Texas…well, i guess an american couldve done it.
who the fuck knows?
fuck soccer. and fuck 1980’s purple bonneville’s.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:16 am
keith i dont like you and you dont like me so why dont we just leave it at that

All this racism got me to thinking…
Nothing mixes better than vanilla and chocolate And yet somehow racial harmony eludes us. If people would only look to the cookie all our problems would be solved. /Seinfeld

I like you man, I don’t like your mentality. Could have been where you were raised, could have been how you were raised, could have been any number of things… nature, nuture? Who knows, but you have a shot at opening your mind, so I like you. You’re funny right up until you cross the line. So there you go.

Bummer the only thing we’re discussing about the game last night is what happened in the parking lot after it was over…
Jozy Altidore scored a goal, Clint Dempsey looked like he was on the bad end of a meth binge, and Gregg Berhalter continues to impress.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:23 am
it appeared to be half-assed soccer to me. that passed to Altidore crossed to Mexican defenders that could’ve stopped and it still snuck through. Entertaining game none the less.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:24 am
sportsgal…gregg berhalter continues to impress whom? the 30 US people who watch soccer?
i kid, i kid.
in all honesty, it was way more itneresting than the duke/UNC game, but neither were as interesting as ‘Tiger’s Top 10 Romps’ on the golf channel.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:25 am
neither was as interesting as the Gauntlet. Rookies are on the board!!
February 7th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Seriously sportsgal, hockey AND soccer. Did you grow up on the island of misfit sports? PS3 was waaaay more interesting than anything last night.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:27 am
coop…i hear there was a riveting jai-lai match on versus last night.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:28 am
I agree benji, the first half was especially sloppy. Bobby Convey didn’t have a great night, I think I saw him turn the ball over more times than he passed it.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Considering it was in Houston, this could have been an incident with locals. The crime rate down there isn’t exactly suburban. But being from Texas and knowing first hand of a girl being raped and murdered by illegals, I won’t rule that out either.

I have the right to discourage people from attending soccer matches in the USA
February 7th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Can’t wait for Adu and Altidore to get on the field together more consistently with the national team.
From what I saw in the U-17 world cup last summer when they played together they could be something special, great chemistry.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Coop - my brother and I played soccer for 12+ years, and my earliest memories in life involved going to a Michigan Tech hockey games. I guess you can blame my love of non-popular sports on my parents… by the way, I love football and baseball, too!
@spencer - Berhalter impressed me, and in my world, that’s all that matters!
February 7th, 2008 at 11:37 am
sportsgal…werd. i guess im just as guilty of the non-major sports fanaticism too. if its golf and its on tv (and isnt played by women - sorry - or seniors) im going to watch. it could be a Euro Tour event in Singapore and ill get genuinely excited.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:38 am
The mid field played poorly at best. I think it needs to be Bradly (who is starting to develope offense in Holland) and Feilhaber. the future of Jozy and Adu looks promising with those 2 in the midfield.
Bobby needs to be gone, Corrales too.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:40 am
female soccer players rule. they can do it in 11 positions for 90 minutes, get it?
February 7th, 2008 at 11:40 am
After further review, and to keep this racial, it was probably Mexican on Mexican crime.

February 7th, 2008 at 11:44 am
Bobby Convey fucking sucks. Moor was lost in D. Altidore looked pretty good, and I like some of the younger guys. I am also not sure about putting Donovan out on the right. He kills the Mexicans, so at least give him some space.
Yeah I watched it. In fact I was terribly annoyed when they would throw cut ins to the Duke/NC game. Sorry I don’t care about CBB until March.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:44 am
benji…female soccer players are amazing. +1.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:45 am
I caught this game during halftime of UNC/Duke and got to see 3 goals so I was pretty happy.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:50 am
i dated a female soccer player once, and she would always say that 11 positions for 90 minutes thing but then would never put out. its ok, cuz her teammates did.
@myself: high five!!
February 7th, 2008 at 11:52 am
You didn’t need to “date” female soccer players where I came from. Dating entails effort.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:55 am
oh, there was much effort. she was going to school to be an anesthesiologist. nuff said. it didn’t work out though.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Hey Sportsgal, do you live in Chicago but grew up in Detroit? I’m confused by the Red Wings avatar.
February 7th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
Houston police have ruled out Mike James and Steve Francis as the shooter.

February 7th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Diesel, I grew up in Michigan (Southwestern part of the state) and have been a Red Wings fan since childhood. I’m a Chicago fan on everything else - Bears, Cubs, Bulls (only during the playoffs). I’ll even cheer on the Blackhawks when they’re not playing the Wings.
February 7th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Fair enough, at least you have one good team to root for right now.
February 7th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Eeek, talking hockey in a post about soccer…next thing you know there will be an F’ing woman President.
February 7th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Or a ………
Really old guy from Arizona.
February 7th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
@sportsgal
Not to be one to nitpick, but Gregg Berhalter didn’t play last night. Nor has he suited up for the Nats in a while. Perhaps you were referring to Bocanegra?
February 7th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
h8r where did you go
February 7th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
In Houston, we generally blame this kind of stuff on people from New Orleans.
It looks like someone fired into a crowd of mexican fans, then drove off. There were three murders and two other shooting injuries last night, so I wouldn’t make too much of it.
February 7th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Deuce Dempsey always looks like he’s chasing the white horse. It’s hard to find good Fulham quality smack in Texas.
February 7th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
@ sportsgirl:
If it weren’t for your red wing allegiances you’d be perfect. I got to see the Altidore goal, and the Dempsey Meth look at the pre-Avs/sharks bar last night, but not the final.
Obviously I grew up on the island of misfit sports fans as well, as I love both soccer and hockey. In fact i was mad at myself for not TiVoing the game. Just remember:
ESPN, Football, Baseball, Basketball, American Idol, Paris Hilton, Mainstream Media, “Meet the Spartans” = popular
Soccer, Hockey, “There Will be Blood”, the Arcade Fire, The Wire, = not popular.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Let’s not forget the “Obama” chants at a friendly in Mexico in 2002. Pure class.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
They were chanting “Obama” in 2002? That’s clairvoyant.
Now chanting “Osama” would be a shot below the bandoleer.
