Steve Kerr: Shawn Marion Would Never Opt Out
NBA February 12th. 2008, 4:07pm
We bit into the Shaq-for-Matrix deal yesterday, so it’s only fair to plunge into the other side: the immediate future of the Miami Heat. A nucleus of always-promising (but underwhelming) Mark Blount, ballhog Ricky Davis, run-and-jump prep star Dorell Wright, the expensive Matrix and gimpy D Wade just screams lottery, don’t it? Fear not, Miami fans, cap-killer Shawn Marion’s going anywhere this offseason – well, that’s what Suns GM Steve Kerr Nash told Dan LeBatard’s radio show yesterday. “[Marion's] not going to opt out. Anybody who is saying [Marion] is, has no idea what they’re talking about. Nobody has the cap room to afford his $17.8 million next year … It’s a huge number. As good a player as he is … at his age … he’s not the kind of guy you start a franchise with. For that kind of money, I don’t think you’re going to see anyone break the bank for him.” We checked – the teams do not meet again this season. Ratones!
How does this troika strike you next year: a healthy Wade, Matrix at his natural small forward spot, and Kansas State’s Michael Beasley (a Derrick Coleman clone, sans the attitude) at power forward against the aging Celtics and Pistons in the East? Not to go overboard, but that trio, if healthy, could potentially go from worst in the East this year to a top 4 seed next year. The problem comes in the summer of 09 … when Matrix – at 30 – asks for big, long-term money.

Strikes me as a team that sucks and misses the playoffs.

What on earth is up with that picture?

I know Steve Nash is awesome…but GM too?
Sorry for the nitpick.

Haha, the picture looks like amateur photoshopping.

I think Little Matrix is up.

1. Beasley will likely go somewhere else, as the draft usually doesn’t fall in favor of the worst team.
2. Even if he did, it wouldn’t be impactful enough for that kind of turnaround. They need help at a myriad of places, as positions where they should be at least solid are woeful (PG, PF)

Anyone else see the Heat against the Lakers Sunday? Blount had something like 20 and 12 against the supposedly stout Pau Gasol.
If anything, I think this hurt the Heat’s chances at the lottery.
Also, anyone else read the ESPN article that says the Grizzlies want as many as three first round picks this year? Could be good if they’re looking to blow it up and start new…

Dwight Howard is really good.

Rockabye I assume you mean hurt’s their chances at getting the number 1 pick, not hurts the chances at the lottery, i.e. they make the playoffs.

Beasley is a good player, but I wouldn’t count on him providing much of an impact in year 1. Look at how big of a flop Durant has been so far. Not saying he won’t get better (I think he will), but he’s been miserablely bad.

miserably*

Does Marion’s face look like the robot faces from “I, Robot” or is it just me?

Hahahhaha, +1 Ben.
Business trip the next two days, see you guys Friday.

that’s an extremely phallic microphone she is gripping. no ?

lol @ Ben. Good call.
As for the Heat, they still blow ass. Ricky Davis is terrible. Anytime he gets the ball in his hands the team might as well start setting up on defense as he is about to fire up a brick from 17 feet. Maybe next year.
Is Beasley that sure of a thing? He does look very good, but he isn’t that big. 6-9 doesn’t necessarily change a team in the NBA. Especially in his first year. I’m not sure who the other big prospects are, but they might be better off with a good PG. Maybe Derick Rose.

papageorgio – anyone besides simmons, who thought that durant was going to be an impact player this year must not have been watching him play at texas. his body is too small at this stage to really play in the league

@J2B: Yeah, I know, I was pro-Oden, too. However, at the very least, I thought Durant would rebound well…for a shooting guard. He’s not even doing that.
February 12th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Mark Blount would flourish with Beasley on the team….

i think the google to find this was, ’shawn marion and ladies’

I don’t think Beasley is Coleman sans the attitude. He might be Coleman with a bit less attitude, but Beasley’s got some issues of his own.

TBL,
This strikes me as a team full of slashers that need the ball in their hands to make things happen. Couple that with terrible 3 ball shooting and you have a crappy team.
D Wade’s style his what makes him great but it’s his downfall. He’s going to continue to get hurt every season and never going to be able to sustain that Finals MVP form for extended periods of time. He’s cut from the T-Mac durability mold and he’ll just be a spectator while LB23 runs the East for the next 10 years.
At least he can go make some commercials.

The pic looks like one of those cardboard cut-outs

Ben, that made me crack up.

“anyone besides simmons, who thought that durant was going to be an impact player this year must not have been watching him play at texas. his body is too small at this stage to really play in the league”
Explain to me how Durant isn’t an impact player. He’s averaging 20 pts and 5 boards as a rookie thats “too smlight”. The next best player on the team is Earl Watson. He gets focused on, doubled and bumped every night. And he hasnt hit the rookie wall even with his “small frame”. Hes been asked to carry a terrible team and has done it.
Its not his fault they traded Ray Allen and let Lewis go. You think he’d have an impact then???
A rookie averages 20 pts as a 19 yr old and you got some people bashing him. That’s funny.
