“Big Shot Bob” vs. “Mr. Big Shot”
NBA, Video February 13th. 2008, 4:26pmEarlier today, we called Detroit’s Chauncey Billups, “Mr. Big Shot.” This has been his nickname for several years. However, it is eerily similar to “Big Shot Bob,” the moniker given to Robert Horry, the man who has seven NBA Championship rings (and hit one of our favorite buzzer-beats in sports history, the above video). The closeness could lead to mild confusion. Who had it first? Or are they dissimilar enough that it doesn’t matter? Is one player more clutch than the other (our opinion should be clear from the video selection).

I’m a Piston fan, and even I think that ‘Mr. Big Shot’ should go to Horry. Chauncey should be something like ‘Motor City Money’ or something like that. Because he wasn’t Mr. Big Anything before he came to Detroit.
‘And Motor City Money hits another three!’….

I remember watching that live. Though I hate the Lakers, video gives me chills.

Chauncey.
Every second of every game of ever series in the playoffs should be considered “CLUTCH” time, and Chauncey plays well from minute 1 to minute 48. Big Shot Bob has ridden coattails to 7 rings, hitting the occasional big 3 and missing many more.

Easily goes to Horry. He’s done it for multiple teams over a longer course of time.
And Billups is a hedgehog.

wow man i didnt think this would be put into a post.
i gotta go with Mr big shot
February 13th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
It’s just a nickname. If you don’t like it, just don’t use it. Nobody really ever over-analyzed whether James Brown was truly “the hardest working man in show business” and nobody ever checked Aretha Franklin’s background to find out if she was legally “the queen of soul.” It’s America. Anybody can call himself anything he wants.

Pistons fan as well and “Mr. Big Shot” should go to Horry, too. Back to back shots against the Hawks and Warriors in the regular season a few years ago does not equate to what Horry’s done all these years.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Damn it, another Piston fan, and ths really, really pains me but, Horry deserves it..if Sheed covers Horry maybe just maybe the Pistons have another title…instead Horry throws the dagger!
February 13th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
One is named Robert and the other is not. I think the “Bob” part makes them significantly different.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
can we just say “Big Shot Jordan” and put Horry and Chauncey out to ‘clutch’ pasture?
horry would be more clutch if he helped his team earlier in the game, you know, get a lead.
billups would be more clutch if he hadn’t fallen apart in the last 3 playoffs.
NOBODY hit more ‘big shots’ than Jordan, he’s the rightful owner.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
“Mr. Big Shot” would be good for Peter North too.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
another Piston fan here. Where the hell has Chauncey been with the Big Shot the last few playoffs?
February 13th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Man I miss the NBA on NBC.
Bob Horry, no question. That highlight is *electric*.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
I despise the dude, especially after the failed trade for Sean Elliott “saved his career” and Game 5 in 2005, but you gotta give him his respect. It’s not like the two will be in court over a silly trademark (i.e. “The Icebox of the Nation.”)

Big Shot Bob? Not here in Phoenix. He is known to us as Cheap Shot Rob
February 13th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Horry, bigger shots at bigger moments.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Can we just agree that Shawn Bradley owns all of these chumps?

Mr big shot
February 13th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Bob Horry would rather be rich like Barkely than known for making big plays.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
just thinking, without any research, how many ‘big shots’ can you remember chauncey making?
now think about horry.
there’s the difference.
and MJ is still king.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
I live in Phoenix and it goes to Robert Horry. Though I really hate that sumabitch.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
@Irish- I have to disagree. Here are the times at which all 10 of those shots were taken. While great shots only one was a big shot;
1st half
6 minutes left
five minutes left
five minutes left
first half
8 minutes left
10 minutes left
first half
third qtr
first half
first qtr
finally one at the buzzer

10 give or take 2…

Sorry to go off topic, but anyone listening to Mike and the Mad Dog right now? They are KILLING all the Republican Congressmen right now. Dishing all the crap they’ve done. Note – they’re both Republicans.
February 13th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Billups getting that nickname has to be the most moniker related offense this side of people calling LaDanion Tomlinson “LT”…aside from the half court bomb against the Nets in ‘04 (I think that was him) can anyone name even two shots that would be considered memorable in NBA history (BS Bob has at least two that I can think of off the top of my head)
February 13th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
@owl: Those shots count too, right? They help you win games?
For instance, I remember the Cavs beating the Wiz in the playoffs 2 years ago with Damon Jones hitting the gamewinner. He only played 2 seconds. Was he more clutch than Lebron who played great the entire game?
Answer me this: if Horry has this inherent ability to play better with 1 shot left in the game, why can’t he play that well earlier in the game? Then his team wouldn’t need any last second heroics.
February 13th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
@Nick – you’re in dangerous territory there…
February 13th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
I remember that discussion fondly, Ron.

CRM, you should go work for “Best Week Ever” or “I love the Januarys”
February 13th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Hef, if it gets me on the same show as Christian Finnegan I’m in.
February 13th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
I feel honored that an entire topic was based on a comment that I made. I’m going to go take a celebratory crap.
February 13th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
I can think of ONE time Horry has had a chance to make a game-winning 3 in the playoffs and somehow missed: The 2003 Western Conference Semi-finals against San Antonio – Game 6. And when it rattled out, Horry gave it a “what the hell? I never miss that!” look…
February 13th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
LeBron hasn’t been around long enough to be included
February 13th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
George Blaha (local Pistons announcer) labeled Chauncey “Mr Big Shot”. Don’t like it? Big fucking deal. It is a nickname that is appropriate.
Big Shot Bob is also appropriate.
They are both good nicknames and comparing them is irrelivant. Horry has won 7 championships, none when he was the main scorer or main cog in his team’s attack. Chauncey has won 1 championship in which he was the Point Guard, team MVP and Finals MVP.
Which is more deserving? Does anybody really care?
February 13th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Chelsea Chris,
obviously we care – there are now 35 comments to this post. Billups had ONE season when he was truly “clutch” and it led him to the Finals MVP. Awesome… more power to him. But “Mr. Big Shot” does not fit him, sorry.
In contrast, I dare you to name just one player currently in the NBA that has a bigger and better history of making clutch shots to win games than Robert Horry. Not even Kobe can really compare.
February 13th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Bob in a landslide. He was huge for the Rockets, huge moments for the Lakers, and some keys hits for the Spurs. Those teams don’t win those rings without Horry doing it dirty at the right times.
February 13th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
It’s become a question, less of which is more deserving (Horry in a landslide) and more of “why did chauncey get the nickname in the first place?” Did he hit some big shots? Sure. But no more than a dozen other guys who play well for the rest of the game too.
February 13th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Even better then this shot was the verbal jabs Horry had for Vlade Divac after Vlade called it, “a lucky shot”.
I would have to side with Horry in this debate as well, he is the true “Big Shot.”
February 14th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Horry all the way should get the moniker. Don’t you guys remember, he was on the Dan Patrick show a few years ago and said that he didn’t want to be called “Big Shot Bob” because his name is Robert…So Dan said to make it “Big Shot Rob”
Wow, that video gave me chills…that was truly a great shot.
February 14th, 2008 at 11:57 am
I don’t know what is more depressing about that video. Seeing what a force Shaq was compared to where he is or seeing Mr. Fab Five run without a limp. I am leaning towards C-Webb and since I am an authority on things such as depression I am going to prescribe Webber’s knee some Prozac. DCDS should have returned those titles – Karma.
