How Many Baseballs Did Roger Clemens Autograph for Roger Cossack Prior to the Congressional Hearings?
Baseball, Courts, Legal, Drugs, Mitchell Report, Rich Old White People February 13th. 2008, 3:07pm
After nearly five hours of testimony that will ultimately lead nowhere, the congressional hearings are finished. We know you hate it when politics enter the sports world, but it was impossible to ignore - the Republicans embarrassingly backed Roger Clemens - one woman pulled out four large photos, didn’t have the exact dates they were taken, and said something to the effect of, ‘Roger, you look the same in all of these’ - and that was her defense. He’s nothing like Barry Bonds! It was a colossal letdown. The Democrats were mostly in favor of Rocket’s trainer, Brian McNamee, and one even called Clemens a liar (repeatedly). But the endgame is that nobody’s going to court to fight this because you can’t nail Clemens for perjury unless there is a smoking gun, and that doesn’t exist.
We’re not going to plunge deep into this mess - Jason Kidd just got traded to the Mavericks, can’t wait to get to that blockbuster - but our opinion is that we saw nothing today to change our stance - Clemens, that evasive prick, is guilty. The only player in all of this who came off perhaps worse than Clemens is ESPN’s legal analyst Roger Cossack. How pro-Clemens was that guy? Does he plan on riding the teacups with Roger at ESPN the Weekend at the end of this month? He actually said (paraphrasing here, but the video will probably be on ESPN later): ‘if you throw out what Andy Pettitte said, who are you going to believe, McNamee or Clemens?’ It was a disturbing display, mostly because: HOW CAN YOU DISCOUNT WHAT PETTITTE SAID? (We should add that Karl Ravech held it down in the studio quite well, and Steve Phillips actually had his first halfway decent performance - possibly ever). Cossack seems to be the only person we’ve read/heard so far who thinks McNamee is the liar.
We just started to sift through all this SI coverage, and it is rather comprehensive, so you should probably check it out.

what yeah right
February 13th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Why would McNamee possibly lie about this?
If McNamee is telling the truth - he goes to jail, but for a short time.
If he actually is lying - he goes to federal pound me in the ass prison for a very, very, very long time.
Plus, the dude still worships Clemens. McNamee must be Republican, too.

If you throw out what my boss says, I’m a highly competent, motivated employee.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Watched most of it on C-SPAN and after seeing it live instead of just quick clips, the level this shitshow has gotten to is embarrassing.
This is basically politically sponsored shit gossip.
The only guy who made ANY sense was Cummings.

With J-Kidd back in Dallas does that me he will hit up Toni Braxton again? And who becomes the third man in that triangle now that Jim Jackson is gone?
February 13th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
if you ignore the fact that Clemens is lying……..the case can be made that he’s telling the truth
February 13th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
TBL, quote the part where that one Republican was going down a laundry lists of prior McNamee statements — “I’ve never provided steroids to anyone, etc.” — and then asking, “Was that a lie?” McNamee: “Yes.”
This went on for a solid 60 seconds.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Heh.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
I’m an unabashed Republican partisan, but I found myself squarely on the Democratic side today.
I flipped over to ESPN Radio to listen to some analysis. How in the world is anyone able to listen to Screamin’ A. Smith for more than five minutes?
February 13th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Oh, you mean when he lied to SI or the NYT - when he wasn’t under oath?
The word “this” … why would he lie about Clemens and roids? He told the truth about Pettitte and it was confirmed by “a truthful man” or whatever phrase Clemens and his lawyers used.
He got roasted today, and deserved it.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
1. You know who feels vindicated today? Dan Duquette for calling the end of Roger’s career correctly and right before the Rocket had his “uplifting” in Toronto.
2. If the FOX Sports report is true, Dallas gave up way too much for Kidd. Harris, Diop, and Stackhouse plus draft picks? Lame-o.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
New Jersey is getting the best of that deal. all that for kidd and malik allen. Orlando should of traded Nelson, Hedo, and jj redick to get Kidd and malik allen.

Because this isn’t a court of law! Roger Cossack is not a judge or a jury. He’s paid to state his opinion. His professional opinion is that Clemens couldn’t be convicted in court. I agree. My dad’s a lawyer and former ADA (he knows Rusty Harden well). He agrees this is all bullshit. Pettitte’s statements aren’t damning enough to convict anyone of anything. In fact, he was apparently a shaky witness.
You can believe Roger lied or whatever. The fact remains: this was a grandstanding hearing where a man was publically tried for crimes. He was not granted a jury of his peers, nor was the burden of proof on the prosecutor.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
I guess he’s going to have to sign some jerseys as well
February 13th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Robert - no arguments that it won’t go to a court of law. I don’t even care about that.
But if you HEARD Cossack, the man embarrassed himself defending Clemens today. He’s the only one (i’ve seen so far) with a scorecard in favor of Clemens.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
If you want to hear some serious ass-kissing for Clemens, if you have XM, switch to 175 and listen to Kevin Kennedy. If he was sucking up any harder his jaws would collapse.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Stackhouse sucks, but NJ is going to buy him out, and he’ll go back to the Mavs.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Elijah Cummings, MVP
When grilling Clemens, this was all Roger could retort: “I believe Andy misheard.”
February 13th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Clemens Lawyer:
“Roger believes what he said to congress was true”
Sounds like double talk to me.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Roger Clemens is channeling George Constanza:
“If you believe it, its not a lie”
February 13th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
YES my NETS are officialy a playoff team with the players we just got!!!
*summersaults*
February 13th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Yeah, Andy “misheard†and “misremembered.”
February 13th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Now we need Elijah Cummings to grill Clay Davis.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
I think McNamee, while telling the truth, is trying to hit a walk off home run instead of sacrificing the runners over to second and third.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
It’s not impossible, trust me.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
and he’s got Barry Bonds hitting behind him
February 13th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

February 13th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
tbl you are gonna post somethin about indiana and kelvin sampson getting into trouble right?
February 13th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
After this “hearing” i would still find it hard to believe Roger will have to worry what hat he wears to the HOF, if he’s still alive when the writer’s finally relent.
If you take into the blog accounts fomr voting writers had during the horse and pony show, not one was convinced Roger was truthful.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
virginia foxx is a HUGE cunt. and im not just bitter that she was a no show when she promised to show up for an interview at my radio station when i lived in her congressional district
rot in hell you wrinkled bitch
February 13th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
The Mitchell Report: approximately 20 million dollars worth of speculation. Wake me up when someone goes to jail.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
@ moleman: Hold a grudge much ?
February 13th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
So well he doesn’t know how to properly spell his name?
February 13th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
I’m not going to say that I don’t think Roger Clemens is lying. However, I do think today’s hearing made the Scopes Monkey Trial look dignified. I’ve always objected to the myth of Mitchell’s supreme integrity. In the Senate, he was a huge partisan. Furthermore, I noticed in the hearings that the people attacking Roger were Democrats and the people saying this whole thing is a ridiculous were Republicans. I liked Congressional involvement went it went after the union, MLB, and the system in general. But now, certain Democrats are just out get somebody in particular and show them who’s boss. Wasn’t this supposed to be about the kids?
February 13th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
grudgedave . my bad. yeah, he probably knows how to spell it. I’ve never met the guy, and I hope I never have to.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
hardin that is
February 13th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
TBL…I agree with you 100% I have never been more dissapointed in Cossack. What a jerk of an opinion. He says I don’t want to give an opinion when all he has done is opinionated as to the believability of Clemens.
Even the studio panel looked shocked1 Damn. I never saw him even try to give Bonds a shred of wiggle room and no one has said they injected Bonds. Wow. Am flummoxed!
February 13th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
The fawning over Clemens was embarrassing. Agree Cossack allowed the legalese that is his life to misinform his view. You can’t discount Pettitte. Christ, even Clemens admits he doesn’t think Pettitte lied. Says he just misheard, or misremembered. I don’t expect this to go anywhere either. It seems like we went a long way just to end up in the same place: most people think Roger is both a dick and guilty.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
i’m sure cossack will also say “if you discount the last 2:48 seconds of the Super Bowl the Patriots won the game”.
What a shitstain.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
That Rep form NY who showed those photos of Clemens with the Yanks and Astros and said there’s no change is the biggset fraud of them all….Wow!! How dumb can you be lady? Did she even give this some thought? Or bother to check facts?
Then, was it she or another, who asked McNamee if he had any book or Movie deals in place…and added, “we’ll see”. Huh?? I guess the first things that comes to mind when you have Federal officials breathing down your neck and facing serious jail time is..’How can I embellish this so I can make money later?’
Good God these people are frauds!
February 13th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Oh oh oh…and the last guy who actually DID use this to make money via a book…..was proved to be sooowrong ma’am. Thge guy came before you as well and was sent packing with his tail between his legs.
Question is…Why is Canseco lying for Clemens? hmmmmmm..
February 13th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
What is the world coming to when Republicans and Democrats can’t even agree that Roger Clemens is a lying sack of shit?
February 13th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
I could be wrong Nick, but I don’t think you can trade a player, buy him out, then allow him to go back to the team he just came from.
February 13th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
I HATE Roger Cossack….but you are vilifying him erroneously. Everything he said was accurate — from a LEGAL perspective. He is paid to analyze things from a LEGAL perspective. You are clearly missing both his role, and his point.
February 13th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
At times, yes, Cossack was talking about the legal aspect. But at other times, it appeared as if he was offering his opinion on how things were shaking out in DC (ie - his view on what was happening, not how it would be impacted in court).
February 13th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
@gonzo
i hated her before she pulled that crap but that certainly didnt help.
