Tom Brady, that NFL Combine Workout Wonder
NFL February 20th. 2008, 4:52pm
What unathletic, unchiseled, untanned college kid is going to unimpress NFL coaches at the combine week, fall to the second day of the draft, and respond by winning three Super Bowls, and earning MVP honors in two of them?
We eagerly await this year’s workout wonder, and the low and high scorers of the most overrated test this side of the SAT - the Wonderlic. It will all be analyzed to death. The web eats garbage like this up.

i love the nfl network but for the life of me you couldn’t pay me to watch the nfl combine. not only am i not interested in a glorified high school track practice, what these guys do in a combine has absolutely nada to do with if they will be effective football players or not.
it’s an incredible waste of time and money.

jimmy…its not completely useless. its a good barometer of athleticism and a great place for guys from lesser known schools to get their foot in the door.
ill give you that too much emphasis is placed on it by media folk (mcshay is the king of that racket) but i doubt that many people still value it seeing as every kid whos going in the top 3 rounds goes to one of those specialized performance camps to do nothing but combine drills.
but really, why do DT’s need to run the 40? why do QB’s need to do the bench press? wouldnt it be more prudent to tailor the drills to each position (they do this to a certain degree, but still…)?
either that, or they should make it more fun, kinda like a week long skills competition. id love to see which DT can push a sled the farthest by themselves or which RB can run the 40 with the most parachutes on their back.

Spencer, they are all athletic. they played college football for Pete’s sake. and please, if you have to write 4 paragraphs on why the combine is not useless, then you have too much time on your hands. Try masterbating.

the greatest asset i can see with the nfl combine has little to do with the phsyical nature of it. it gives the scouts a chance to interview a great numbers of players in one sitting.
with the advent of video production/technology and email (where video of players can be distributed in a snap), i’m confident a good scout can gleam more information from video of the players on the field then they ever could bouncing around in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt in a domed stadium.

spencer is a character isnt he.
this just in hot off the press from mel kiper:
The big tuna is looking at Ben Moffitt to replace Zach Thomas. He is going to use the number one pick to pick up Moffitt.

That picture is a great find. Who would have thought that that skinny, white body would produce thee titles?!

At least this time TBL didn’t link us to the gay web site from which that picture originated.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

I see TBL linked to that website that says it will live blog the Combine.
I have a media credential to the NFL media work room and will be working from there all day (10 a - 5p) and I’ll be live blogging as well. I’m not sure if that blog is going from the Combine or what they’re seeing on the NFL Network, but I’m doing the work from the actual media room.
