Spring Training Matters!
Baseball February 25th. 2008, 3:39pm
Anyone else find this photo slightly amusing? Something about Mr. Gyro’s his stance. Over the next month, we’ll periodically look for obscure Spring Training news for the seamheads in the house. Tomorrow we whip out some fantasy baseball talk, so sharpen your No. 2 pencils and bring extra paper. Eric Karabell ain’t got shit on The Baseball Friend!
* The Devil Rays are pondering signing Barry Bonds, which makes sense, because you want the young pups on the best juice, and it couldn’t hurt attendance.
* The continuing debate: Does Jay Bruce start in CF for the Reds? Very unlikely.
* Rocket’s son says he his cheating father will appear at Spring Training.
* The Mets and Phillies are the new Yankees and Red Sox, and we can only hope for a basebrawl on April 8.
* Fukudome: Bunt-o is Japanese for bunt.

Mets & Phillies have won 3 WS between them EVER. New Yankees and Red Sox??? Nope.
February 25th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Jay, i would say this rivalry should be more fun than the Sox/Yanks. Both teams like to talk trash.
February 25th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Jay - if you clicked the link, it’s about trash talk and bitter hatred for a division rival
February 25th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
This is terrific for the game. A chance for the spot light to shine on teams other than the Yanks or Sox. This has been said before, but ESPN’s coverage of Sox/Yanks is exhausting. very tiresome. of course, I would like better coverage of the West Coast teams, but finally something other than Sox/Yanks.

No way Dusty starts a rookie in CF, or 1B or SS or a starter. *start sarcasm:
Dusty is not amused by 20+ somethings that breeze thru three levels of professional ball in a summer. *sarcasm off*

I don’t love everything ESPN does, but the reason they broadcast Yanks/Sox 10 times a year is because . . . it’s their highest rated games.
ESPN is a corporation. Their goal is to make money.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Thanks Mike, it seems like people around here tend to forget that.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
It is hard for me to get excited about baseball considering the O’s will be lucky to win 50 games.
Was watching their series with the Indians on Orioles Classics last night, the one where they won in the Wild Card round, I wish I wasn’t living in England at the time so I could have enjoyed it.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Agreed with Mike NYC for the most part, but ESPN pushes Yanks/Sawks so badly that it almost seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy. “We don’t pull those kind of ratings with any other games/teams.” Really? You think that might have something to do with the idea of barely covering/mentioning any other teams?

his his his his

Damn right Spring Training matters! I love baseball!

Hey, the YankSox play 6 series per year. yes I will watch when they are on. but even when they dont play each other, they are the top story every night. It sickens me. I wanna know what’s going on with the Mariners, D-Backs, Padres, Pirates, Reds, Royals, Twins, DRays, O’s, Nats and any other shitty team in the league. (Sorry they are all not shitty, just trying to make a point). it would be refreshing to see full highlights of a Rays/O’s series. You know what I mean by FULL highlights. Not just 4 seconds of Joe Schmoe striking out 3 guys in a row then flashing the final score for 4 more seconds.

February 25th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
gonzo, a solution for that is for other teams to get good. the better the team, the more they’ll be in the limelight.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Gonzo, I am not even sure if O’s/Rays fans would want full highlights of a series between those two teams.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Neo: the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, Seattle Mariners from years past and the Oakland A’s of the early 00s would like to dispute that.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Games start on friday here in AZ. I’m going to follow the white sox around all spring and heckle ozzie guillen and carlos quentin. BTW it’s dam near 80 today so I took off work early to enjoy some day drinking.

First off on the Mets-Phils rivalry…Mets fans used to go to Philly and sit at the Vet and pretty much own the place…now that is changing which is good for Philly baseball (and bad for me I can’t watch my beloved Mets for $30 20 rows form the field anymore) But I will say this and I found this very disappointing…Last weekend of the year…Mets/Marlins John Maine pitching and a section of what I would say were 60-70 Phillie fans chanting about the choke and everything which is all well and good BUT..Their team was TIED for 1st..Their Team was Playing at the same time and they hadn’t won a division in 14 years…now if the roles were reversed I would be watching my own team play and not at the rivals ballpark taunting especially when nothing was settled…with that said this year should be fun because both fan bases have been waiting to hate each other..now its go time
February 25th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Roman, it’s funny you say that. this years Phillies slogan …
IT’S GO TIME.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Every year the Mets have had some cheesy slogan that gets mocked and then used to disparage us as we do something horrendous…i.e. 2007 Your Season has come….this year the Mets have decided to no longer put out a shitty slogan…Mets fans have rejoiced
February 25th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
@Roman: There’ll be no joy in Mets-ville when Jay Bruce comes to bat.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
I’m well aware it was about bitterness and trash talk…that said, until those franchises do more than win sporadically, they AREN’T the new Yankees/Red Sox.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Nick…I actually had a Reds related conversation with a co-worker today..he is convinced with your pitching you are winning the Central..I need to be convinced but in NY two Mets fans actually talked 4 and a half minutes of Red Baseball…on a completely different note it is REALLY SLOW around here today
February 25th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Jay..I agree…we are just getting started…it has been one of those things with the Phils and Mets that has been sitting there for years because they have never been good at the same time and the year they won the had Lenny Dykstra and Mets fans love that guy and were bitter at our own team for trading him for Juan Fucking Samuel
February 25th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Jay, no one is saying they are a better rivalry than the yanks/sox. are you paying attention ? i dont mean to be rude, but for pete’s sake.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Isn’t winning the NL central sort of like being the tallest midget?
February 25th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
@Rome: That may be the first time “win” and “Reds pitching” have been used in the same sentence without the word “not” in there somewhere…at least this decade.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
There’ve been more NL Central WS appearances than any other division in the NL this century (only 1 win, though).
February 25th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Gonzo…saying something is the “new” so&so implies that it as least as equal.
Keep in mind, I am a Phillies season ticket holder.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
This is what I wrote back at comment #4. For people sick of Yanks/Sox, check us out. That’s all I’m trying to say.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
@Nick: I wasn’t making an historical argument. I was saying that last year, the NL Central was the worst division in all of baseball and will probably be the same again this year.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
if we’re talking current baseball rivalries, tribe vs. tigers is pretty heated. lets stick to big-boy baseball here, watching a Mets-Phils game is like watching a cripple fight.
now that you mention it tho…cripple fights are pretty sweet.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
Cripple fights are sweet–that’s why I still tune in to watch the Giants/Dodgers every now and again even though they both suck.
