Breaking: Yao Ming Out for the Season
NBA February 26th. 2008, 1:24pm
Cross the Rockets off your playoff list, and start thinking on how you’re going to unload Tracy McGrady! The Houston Chronicle reports that Yao will miss the remainder of the season with a stress fracture in his left foot.
[UPDATE: Further thoughts - even though Houston is on a 12-game winning streak, and currently 7th in the West - just three games behind the Lakers - we can't see the Rockets holding off Golden State and Denver. After just trading Bonzi Wells, where is the scoring going to come from? Luis Scola? Replacing 22-10 is going to be impossible. Good luck, T-Mac.]

That’s what you get when you depend on products made in China.

February 26th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
oh great, now that the Great Wall is down, here come the Mongolians.
February 26th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
@spencer: +1.

Kill me. Kill me now.
February 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
breaking news:shaq wants a buy out so he can go to houston and run alot less
February 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Move them to the east, and I’d bet they would still host the first round.
February 26th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
They were never on my playoff list, at least the list of teams that would actually get out of the first round. +1 wildcat.
February 26th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
well at least the Scola/Landry/Dikembe center combination is better than the one out in Phoenix. Maybe we can survive.
February 26th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
nice to see we’ll find out what Scola is made of. i bet on him to win the ROY at season’s start … any chance he overtakes durant if he puts up like 20-10 over the final 25 games and gets houston to the playoffs?
February 26th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
George Karl must be doing back flips right now.
Too bad for Yao, but I’d much rather watch a Laker/Nuggets first round than a San Antonio/Houston.
February 26th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
I hear Luc Longley and Bill Wennington are available.
February 26th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
George Karl AND Don Nelson are doing backflips right now
February 26th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Guys their age shouldn’t be doing backflips. I’d hate to be on either one of those ambulance crews.
February 26th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
you all realize the Rockets are still making the playoffs, right?
We may die in round 1 again, but we ARE making the playoffs.
February 26th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Scola is not that good.
Landry will crush.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Over/under on the number of “Houston, we have a problem.” headlines.
I set it at 3.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Houston will not make the playoffs now, they may be hot, but they beat 4 teams with winning records in their 11 game win streak. I’d say Yao was a big reason for the record they have now.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Yi Jianlian weeps softly at this news.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Waaaaaaaaaaay off topic, but…
Do any of you know where I can find historical stats on money lines for NFL games? I want to find some kind of list showing each game from last season and the final money line for it. Thanks.

try covers.com
February 26th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
We are so fucked
February 26th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Houston we have a………..potential lottery chance
February 26th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
The only reason why this isn’t a big deal is that we were not going to win the title this year anyways. There is no way we are beating the Spurs, Mavs, or Suns for that matter in a 7 game series. However, this is just another year wasted for TMac, he’s not getting any younger.
Go Stros

@Nick
Thanks. I can’t find moneylines on covers.com but did find the point spreads by week. Do you know if moneylines are related to the spreads?

cue Simmons and his Ewing/Tiki Theory.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
hakeem…i dont really get to watch many rockets games, is t-mac even any good this year? i havent heard jack shit or seen any highlights of him going off. have i just missed it?
February 26th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
So the Wiz have a chance tonight, yes!
February 26th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
He’s played very well as of late. Scores about twenty a game and averages 7 or 8 assists. He doesn’t have to take over games anymore so I think that has helped him alot. I still think we can make the playoffs though, considering that last year when Yao was out we played our best basketball
February 26th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
It has been interesting to watch Hakeem go through a wide range of emotions.
We are so fucked.
We can make the playoffs>
Hahhaa.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Well I forgot about last year when Yao broke his leg and we actually played better without him, I still think we can make the playoffs but no title. I guess I’ll have to go pop in my 94/95 clutch city dvd’s.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
hakeem…since we’re talkin rockets, what do you think they need to be a title contender? do you think yao is enough of a centerpiece?
February 26th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
cbh, allow me to translate:
We are so fucked. We’re fucked only in that we aren’t winning a ring now.
We can make the playoffs. We can. And we will. And then lose in round 2 to San Antonio.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
can someone explain the ewing/tiki theory? it has been referenced a few times here. If the theory is that the Knicks got better after Ewing left, how does that work?
Ewing was on the Knicks when they went to the finals. Twice. They have not returned. In fact, since he left, they have made the playoffs just once. Lost in the first round.

No Yao isn’t aggressive enough. I like the guy but seeing him in person several times I just don’t see him ever being anything more than he is right now. A good center that can win us 50 games and possibly take us into the western conference finals. Its not all his fault though, the Rockets haven’t done nearly enough to build around him. Battier and Alston aren’t Manu and Parker.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Hahah, TBL I don’t think you will ever understand the Ewing Theory.
In fact it is no longer the Ewing Theory, it has been re named the Barber theory.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
I think the Ewing Theory originated when he left Georgetown. Either way, it’s a bullshit theory. Simmons is a gouche.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
hakeem…i agree, just didnt wanna start a ridiculous pro-yao/anti-yao debate. i think hes a great post-presence seeing what hes done against the cavs, but you need someone in there who can slug it out and isnt passive. plus a PG would help, but that applies to 2/3 of the league.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Yeah, with the drought the Rockets are in though I will take the WCF if he could get us there. This one and done shit is terrible.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
You had back-to-back titles in the 90’s
As a Wizards fan who has seen them win one playoff series in my lifetime, I don’t feel sorry for you in the least.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
The Wizards forfeited any chance at a title when they chose such an awful name. Go Bullets
February 26th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
I would say the Rockets forfeited any more titles when they changed their uniforms and court to that cartoon looking rocket.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Touche’, I will never forgive them for that
February 26th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
i have no sympathy for either of you. you both have probably seen titles in your lifetime. the rockets do have the nastiest unis in sports tho.
btw…anyone see the clever front page story at the WWL? must of taken them hours to come up with that.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
cbh, you may be on to something… does the Curse of the Pajama Jerseys extend to Yao’s injury? I wouldn’t doubt it.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
i did like the stevie franchise era jersies tho. the blue ones with the white stripes…classy. are those the pajama ones?
February 26th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Haha, yes Spencer those are the pajama ones.
February 26th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
I’m trying to have a sense of humor about all this. It’s been a tough day. (A message to Rockets fans)
