Fun with a Pat Forde Blind Item
College Basketball February 28th. 2008, 11:09am
ESPN’s Pat Forde, probably one of the most underrated reads over at ESPN, had a delicious blind item in his most recent column. It has left us stumped. Help is necessary.
“Spies tell The Minutes that a Big East coach who shall remain nameless (38) recently got into a halftime argument with one of his assistants in a hallway outside the locker room. According to a source, it escalated to the point where punches were thrown.”
The logical guess, even with scant evidence, has to be WVU’s Bob Huggins. The Mountaineers were getting destroyed at halftime recently, down 45-21 at Villanova. Also, Forde used to write for the Louisville Courier-Journal, and so perhaps the Louisville Cardinals are involved in this mess. What about when Pitino had to change suits at halftime of the Georgetown game a few weeks ago? He came up with two lame excuses after the fact, but perhaps something got torn in the scuffle? It was a televised game, so presumably 100 ESPN employees were on the scene that night. Maybe one of them had Forde sit on it for awhile so it wouldn’t be obvious where it came from?

…C. Vivian Stringer?
February 28th, 2008 at 11:13 am
nothing like speculation. Now pitino is a bad guy and on monday you were saying coach cal is one of the games best cheaters.
whats next out of a college basketball post, bruce pearl does roids?
February 28th, 2008 at 11:15 am
I don’t think it was Pitino. He seems way to calm for a disagreement to come to punches.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:16 am
first off, that suit that huggins is pictured in is a “blind item.”
second, i can’t see pitino getting into a fistfight. huggins i sure can.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:20 am
I lost all respect for Forde when he unrelentlessly bashed Arkansas for hiring Petrino just because he shunned Forde when he used to work for the Louisville paper.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:21 am
This discussion begins and end with Jim Boeheim. The guy is a mad man.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:21 am
You took my joke, Mexico.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:21 am
No way it was Pitino, unless he got into it with his son or one his former players that serve as his assistants. And believe me, if Pitino was involved, the Lexington paper would have had a 16 page special pull out section.
My moneys on Huggy Bear.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:21 am
I lost all respect for Bobby Petrino when he quit on his team 13 games into the season.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Also, Huggins is a dead ringer for the guy from the Justice Department in Devil’s Advocate. I think I mentioned that the first time that God-awful suit made an appearance on TBL.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Now pitino is a bad guy and on monday you were saying coach cal is one of the games best cheaters.
How long have you paid attention to college basketball? Are you familiar with Cali’s history at Massachusetts?
February 28th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Huggins is trying to steal some of Pearl’s “hideous school color” suit thunder. Poseur.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Ark – What evidence is there of Petrino shunning Forde? Perhaps I missed it?
February 28th, 2008 at 11:32 am
prove me wrong TBL, while i prove you wrong. No infractions, nothing
February 28th, 2008 at 11:32 am
i cant see huggins…just because he’s a badass. one punch and the other guy would be down for the count, there wouldnt be any chance for another one to be thrown.
im gonna throw in a crazy name…boeheim. he comes across as such a nice guy, you know he’s a total asshole behind the scenes.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:33 am
threadjack: per PFT looks like the browns wont sign anderson to the multiyr deal and instead will give him the 1 yr tender
sorry end threadjack…huggins is a total scumbag

UMass’s 1996 Final Four appearance was vacated due to violations, I remember that…
February 28th, 2008 at 11:37 am
A few friends of mine are Syracuse Alum and all say that JB is an asshole and a major prick.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:38 am
…in 1996, the UMass Minutemen ended the winningest season in UMass basketball history. Coached by John Calipari and led by future NBA star Marcus Camby, the Minutemen racked up a 26 game winning streak. Their ability to press opponents with a superior defense helped earn them only their second appearance in the NCAA tournament in 81 years. Ranked No. 1 in the nation, UMass beat Georgetown to reach the Final Four. The largest television audience ever for a college basketball game watched the Minutemen lose to the Kentucky Wildcats in the semi-finals.
what was that jack
February 28th, 2008 at 11:38 am
Irish – the NCAA completely wiped UMass’ Final Four appearance under Calipari off the record due to trangressions occuring with Camby, et. al.
Perhaps it was someone kind of off the radar – like Jay whomever coaches Rutgers or S. Florida?
February 28th, 2008 at 11:39 am
fuck..marcus took money. but that wasnt Cal’s fault
February 28th, 2008 at 11:40 am
never is
February 28th, 2008 at 11:40 am
The ‘96 UMass Final Four appearance was vacated due to the violations by Camby, not the result of anything done by Calipari. From the chairman of the infraction committee, to Calipari:
“The committee fully recognizes you had nothing to with the violations of Marcus Camby during the 1995-96 season. In a sense, you were an innocent victim.”
It is possible for recruits to break the law, accept money, etc., without the coach knowing.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:41 am
my bad Jack, still got you though TBL. Cal had nothing to do with that
February 28th, 2008 at 11:41 am
I meant to say Jay Wright
February 28th, 2008 at 11:41 am
Arkbadger–I’m sure you’re not biased or anything…
February 28th, 2008 at 11:42 am
mmonast…thanks for the update.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:42 am
TBL doesn’t have proof but unless John Calipari is John Wooden I find it interesting how UMASS did jack before he got there and then were amazing and now are mediocre to bad.
Memphis sucked for a long time, he comes there, all of the sudden all of the top guys want to go there and they are #1.
Ok, so you want to say he is a great coach, why did he suck so bad in the NBA?
If it smells like a rat and looks like a rat, well…..
February 28th, 2008 at 11:43 am
no problem…now we just need a team to give us some picks and we are set
February 28th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Irish, UMass dodged trouble while Cal was there, but once he left, the hammer fell.
Also, there were academic issues, as witnessed in this 1994 NYT game recap:
Calipari, who had to deal with a preseason flap over the academic performances of almost half his players, was elated after the victory.
Feel free to google away any combination of NCAA UMass Camby Calipari Illegal Academics
February 28th, 2008 at 11:46 am
mmonast…in phil we trust.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:49 am
Irish..I was just about to say that Marcus took agent money..Cal didn’t pay him…Listen does Calipari go out and recruit the top Student athletes in the country? No…but both of the Universities that employee him don’t expect them too
February 28th, 2008 at 11:49 am
Always liked Forde after 2005 when he said Wisconsin beating UNC in the Elite Eight would be terrible for college basketball and for the first and only time e-mailed a columnist (because Mariotti doesn’t list an e-mail) and I mustn’t have been the only one because he sent out a mass apology to all of us
I just thought it was a nice gesture for a writer to respond to a bunch of idiot homer fans who had finally reached our “Wisconsin sucks” breaking point (the irony is that UW put up 82 points on that Tar Heel team proving that it’s more Big Ten defense that leads to lower scores than it is bad offense)
February 28th, 2008 at 11:51 am
apples and oranges.
all kinds of guys were successful on the college level and fell flat on their face in the nba. larry brown is the only guy i can think of who had success at both.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Hahahha, Butters you love referencing that game, I just find it funny because you LOST.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:52 am
But that’s my point in college you can get all the best guys, and sometimes by any means necessary. It is not hard to coach a bunch of great guys, but what is it about Calipari that the best players want go to UMASS and Memphis, their history? No, probably something else.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Butters, that must have been some amazing defense in that 2000 Final Four when Michigan State beat Wisconsin like 48-42 or whatever that score was. Worst basketball game I have ever seen.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:55 am
listen, maybe this is a bad analogy but what about REggie bush taking cash. Is pete carroll one of the biggest cheats because he goes out and recruits top notch athletes. coaches cant help what there players do when they are out of sight
February 28th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
I have no defense for the Dick Bennett era…I remember laughing when they took a 22-14 lead into halftime against an LSU team that was just completely befuddled
February 28th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
exactly, in your eyes TBL that would make Pete Carroll one of the biggest cheats in the game. there is a new post for ya
February 28th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
@irish: I do think he’s a cheat.
February 28th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
who carroll? or Cal
February 28th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Beauty in basketball really is in the eye of the beholder (just like how some people love 1-0 baseball games and others like 9-8)…I thought Tennessee-Memphis game was shitty due to both teams playing sloppy ball, jacking up bad shots left and right and committing stupid fouls
To each their own
February 28th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
TBL NFA free agency posting coming?
February 28th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
[...] over at The Big Lead, an interesting scenario is presented: Pitino had to change his flamboyant white suit at halftime [...]
February 28th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Is it just me, or is Pat Forde nothing more than a collection of well-constructed cliches and metaphors?
Hold on, you say that’s what sports writing is in general now? Damn you Mitch Albom!
February 28th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
I caught this a couple of days ago and almost wrote up the exact same speculative post. Forde’s a bit of a purist when it comes to his writing and views, so I think he’d have a huge problem with Huggins’ behavior over the past decade. I think it’s gotta be him.
February 28th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Yes, I am slightly biased, but look at Petrino’s situation with the Falcon’s. He was almost in a lame duck situation. He stepped into a situation with the whole Vick deal that was out of his hands, had very little respect from his players, and realized half way through the season that he was in a no-win situation.
As far as what Forde’s problem with Petrino is a lot of what I heard was hearsay, but I guess Forde didn’t like it that Petrino flirted with Auburn while he was still at Louisville and took it personally. From what I heard Petrino shunned him on a couple of interviews and Forde got pretty butt hurt about it. I’m fine with the fact that Forde doesn’t like the guy, but dish it out evenly. ESPN drug Petrino through the mud for a good month, but said nearly nothing about RR going to Michigan and pretty much shitting on WV the same way Petrino did to the Falcons. I’ll see if I can’t find a link to a story.
February 28th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
How did Rodriguez shit on West Virginia in the same way Petrino did the Falcons?
Who wants a coach who when things get tough and don’t go the way you expected quits? Isn’t that what a coach is supposed to teach his players, to perservere through tough times.
Rodriguez left his team, when they had a month to prepare for a bowl game, Petrino left his team with 3 games to go and 6 days before a game.
Arkbadger you are total homer on this one and it will be fun to see Petrino abandon your school when things get tough.
February 28th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
theyre about the same, RR and petrino. both are scum.
February 28th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
I agree that I am a total homer, but that’s the beauty of being a fan, alumni and donor, I have to be a homer.
I guess my comparing Petrino and RR was a little off since they are totally different situations, but did RR not say he was staying at WV right before he bailed, and had he not recently signed a pretty big contract? I would have to assume he was telling his recruits he wasn’t going anywhere either.
Whether Petrino was the problem in the locker room in Atlanta or not, it seemed pretty clear that he wasn’t getting much respect or results from his team. And it isn’t like Petrino left for another NFL team. I don’t totally agree with what he did to the Falcons, but on the same lines I can’t really blame him. One of Forde’s big beefs with his was that he was greedy and only looking out for himself, yet he took a 2 million dollar pay cut and went to a place that was going to be better for him in the longrun.
Talk to me in a couple years if/when Petrino bails on Arkansas and my views will be completelly different.
February 28th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
I bet is was Boeheim. I’ve heard from numerous people who’ve worked with him (though not necessarily for him) that he’s a first-rate a-hole.
As far as Calipari goes, anyone who’s that tight with William Wesley is bound to be dirty.
February 28th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Its not Boeheim because Boeheim loves his assistants. There’s no evidence of Calipari blatanlty cheating but he does ALWAYS look the other way when kids get into trouble off the court. That is usually an indicator of some kind of shenanigans going on.
February 28th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
I’m sure Pat appreciates this blog entry. Working for a name such as ESPN.com anymore seems to bring on undeserved bad attention, but Pat is doing a quality job.
Also, appreciate this information. It is interesting to hear of stories like these going on around the country, and always tempting to solve a good mystery.
February 28th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
we’ve gotten to the bottom of this, and will be posting more on it later. it was neither of our guesses, and of the 53 posts, nobody has been right.
February 28th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
did anyone guess calhoun?
February 28th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Then Fred Hill of Rutgers would be my safety guess.
February 28th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
South Florida coach Stan Heath?
DePaul coach NooneoutsideofChicago KnowswhothehellIam?
February 28th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Gotta be Tim Welsh. Apparently not too many Friar fans in here.
February 28th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Stan Heath? Good Lord, as an Arkansas fan I can 100% gaurentee that it wasn’t him.
Worst. Coach. Ever.
February 28th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
I just assumed it was JT3. The whole Thompson family are bullies. Weve heard what went down with Ronny, and Coach was always willing to go to war over any little thing (Im a huge fan of his, even listen to his god-awful radio show).
