USA Today Loves Doug Gottlieb ESPN
College Basketball, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings February 28th. 2008, 11:46am
We enjoy Doug Gottlieb’s effervescence when he’s calling college basketball games, and his studio insight usually is on point - think biting and authoritative, minus the Steve Phillips-like idiocy (mostly). But we were still floored to see a 1,600-word piece in USA Today on Gottlieb, plus three sidebars on Gottlieb’s favorite announcers, his family, and ESPN’s Tom Brennan. The hell?
We realize that many of ESPN’s on-air personalities have become “stars” and you could probably rattle off five college hoops announcers at the WWL before you could name the starting five at Stanford, Xavier, or half of the Top 25 teams.
But if the McPaper is giving that much love to Gottlieb, what’s next, a 2,000 word paean on the eloquence of Stacey Dales, with sidebars on the hair product choices of Rece Davis, and the kinship between Brent Musburger and Erin Andrews? We’re not sure whether to commend the ESPN PR staff for its continued success of placing stories in the largest circulation paper in the country, or ask USA Today to wake the hell up. McCarthy, come on, can’t you talk some sense into the sports editor over there?

On Gotlieb’s radio show they were saying his new name was USA Today?
I don’t care enough about him to read that article so can someone tell me if they mentioned the trouble he got into while at school with the whole credit card thing?
February 28th, 2008 at 11:52 am
yes
February 28th, 2008 at 11:53 am
I think the Nebraska Athletic Department would have approved of the article.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Wake me up when they do a Erin Andrews pull out pictorial.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Filler piece.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:56 am
jgp…well played.
TBL…me and my dad were just talking about the McPaper yesterday. funny stuff, never heard that nickname before then.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:56 am
jgp, they definitely would, but his studio co-hosts and behind the scenes people are being real bitches about his success.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:56 am
I actually like Gottlieb.
/the horror!
February 28th, 2008 at 11:56 am
TBL they could make their whole newspaper about ESPN on air personalities and it would not matter one bit because it is a paper.
February 28th, 2008 at 11:58 am
.75 cents a copy is too much for a newspaper. .50 cents is a fair price for a newspaper

Do they mention the time he wore his shorts backwards during a basketball game and the team had to huddle around him while he changed?
Do they mention his career 46% free throw percentage?
Do they mention his 11% three point percentage?
I made those numbers up, but he was an awful point guard when it came to shooting. Good D and Assists.
I’ve got Gottlieb in the “Which ESPN Personality is going to do something unbelievably stupid (think Reynolds, SS, Jacobsen, etc…) pool at work. I’m getting good odds. This will be easy money.
I like his college hoops work in studio. It’s just hard to get over what a tremendous ass he was in college.

I don’t listen to ESPN Radio that much, but the only guys I used to like were DP and Erik Kuselias.
February 28th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
I would KILL for information on Rece Davis’ hair product usage. Don’t patronize.

Goodness. My hyperbole wasn’t far off…

24% 3’s. 37% Fgs. Ouch.
February 28th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Wow, how is a PG such an awful free throw shooter?
February 28th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Well still enjoy Gottlieb here in Madison from back when he called a freshman Brian Butch the “most overrated player in the Big Ten” who at the time was dealing with mono and his mom having cancer…I know these guys can’t know everything about everyone they cover but that was pretty bad
(Note: I’m worried that this and my Forde comment in the last post is making me come across as an idiot Badger homer…if that’s the case I apologize(

I get hot-and-cold with Gottlieb. You have to give him some credit for doing his thing and having opinions - ESPN tends to be soft, y’know - but sometimes it appears that it’s for cosmetic value. Overall, I like DG more than not, but he’s almost as big of a media whore as, coincidentally, Salisbury.

as a columnist, i always felt mike mccarthy is really lame bordering on weak. maybe because i a) don’t find his subject matter very compelling; and, b) he comes across as a nun teaching a third grade class with his opinions.
hiestad, while a gifted if not witty writer, will regurgitate seemingly any press release sent to him by the WWL. maybe the guy is just mentally fried from his job?
in my eyes, for tv columnists, these is mushnick and there is chad and there’s all the rest.
john cotey, who used to be the tv/radio sports colunist for the st. pete times was getting close to muchnick-chad territory before he gave the column up to write boxing.
i too enjoy gottlieb (i really like his radio show). maybe mcpaper thinks it can get more hits with a gottlieb piece than, say, an evgeni malkin or eric gordon piece?

The only thing I remember from ever listening to his radio show is that he can’t seem to pronounce the word “coaches” correctly. It sounds like “chewches” when he says it.

Gottlieb isn’t popular at all right now amongst carolina fans. He hammered Danny Green for dancing when the PA played “Jump Around.” Therefore, Roy said he didn’t want to go on his show. Then when Ty got injured, Gottlieb actually had the gall to suggest it was karma. Not to mention his attack on beloved Tar Heel annoucer Woody Durham during his ESPN chat for confusing misdemeanor fraud with a felony….

whoops, forgot about mr. watchdog over the newsday! my apologies mr. watchdog!
February 28th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Gottlieb’s like how Collinsworth used to be before finding religion at NBC and the NFL Network: insightful about the game but takes “telling it like it is” too far to the point where everything seems negative

Haha, this is hilarious, it is Blue Chips mixed with Dwayne Wade doing poorly at the skills competition, the guys at Blue Chips think Dwayne threw the competition.
February 28th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
I’d heard about the Wade meltdown but hadn’t seen the tape…that’s awesome

Wake me up when they do a Salisbury memorial, where the Grey Goose flows like water.
February 28th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
I liked the story — interesting. Timely because of March Madness being around the corner. TBL - why you hatin?

Gottlieb, Seth Davis, and many others need to learn to stop praising Steve Alford and understand he did a lousy job at The University of Iowa, and at the same time, was an arrogant prick.

After buying a Cafe Latte at Starbucks with a credit card that wasnt his, he wadded up the reciept and tossed it toward the garbage, he missed.
Gottlieb strikes me as someone who probably knows the game well, but has to resort to “keepin it real” way to much. I listened to a UL game he called and he NEVER shut up, made some good points, but after awhile its just all noise.
February 28th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Gottlieb is not bad when he fills in on one of the regular radio shows, but I just can’t totally convince myself to accept him since he is best friends with Cowherd. Herd mentions him all the time on his own show and how they hang out. Yes, I listen to Colin, but not willingly. He just happens to be on in between M&M and Tirico’s shows.
February 28th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
You have something mentally wrong with you if you like Mike Tirico.
