LeBron Reigns Again
NBA, Video March 2nd. 2008, 5:30pmThe Cavaliers came back from an 8 point 4th quarter deficit to defeat the Bulls 95-86 in the first meeting between the teams since the 11 player deal last month. Larry Hughes scored 23 for Chicago, but it was (surprise!) LeBron James who stole the show with 37 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists.
It was also LeBron who soared through the air and threw down a monstrous dunk late in the 4th quarter as part of a string of 6 consecutive points. The Cavs took the lead and never looked back with 3 minutes left in regulation.
The dunk evidence is shaky, but well worth the 13 seconds of your time.

Fun finish to that Lakers game, huh?

Unbelievable performances by both LeBron and Kobe today. People can have their irrelevant MVP debate all they want, but I’m pretty sure you’d be happy to have either.
How about Jeff Van Gundy calling the Kobe rebound on the free throw line before it even happened?
Van Gundy says, “That’s not a good matchup on the free throw line, Kobe is a very good offensive free throw line rebounder and Brandon Bass doesn’t have the experience.”
See Nick P – this is precisely why I trust NBA coaches over writers – these guys know so much more about the game than they even let on. That is except Isiah of course.

Oh and nice job by “untouchable” Deng – that might actually be a good time to foul LeBron there.
The Bulls have so many overrated players, it’s not even funny. To think that Deng (a nice young player) could prevent a Kobe trade from happening is a total joke. Between John Paxon ruining the Bulls and Jim Paxson ruining the Cavaliers – I haven’t seen two siblings do this much destruction since the Menendez brothers!

@cc: I found it kinda funny how Kobe turned the ball over with 30 seconds left…could have iced the game, but I guess he wanted the extra 5 minutes to go for 50 points and personal glory. Just sayin’

Can’t really fault him for looking to get Pau another layup – a few too many hands in there on the penetration – I guess LeBron isn’t the only guy who gets double teamed in the league afterall… Just sayin’
How about Kobe stripping Kidd and Dirk…and blocking Dirk (bad foul call there) in key stages. There’s not a player in the league that makes bigger plays defensively with such regularity when the game is on the line.

My pick to come out of the West is Dallas. We’ll see how that works out.
Kobe played really well — that was a foul, though.

Van Gundy is insane. Anyone catch his “Free throw rebounds shouldn’t be rebounds” rant? Vintage.

Actually pointofattack, he must have been stealing out of my bag of hacky criticisms. I’ve actually made that point…not necessarily about how not counting them – just that the rebound total can be completely misleading. Guys can get 5 rebounds a night just based on the low block.
I’d like a rebounding stat characterizing how many rebounds legitimately saved or added a possession. If someone takes a shot and it falls into my hands, I really didn’t do anything to preserve the possession, but if I went up in traffic and secured a board, I’d like that to be some sort of statistic.
The statistics we have in basketball just don’t tell much of a story sometimes.

There’s a reason players like Rafer Alston and Daniel Gibson aren’t on the low block when players shoot FTs. It’s because they’re not good enough rebounders to secure FT misses. The Kobe offensive rebound over Brandon Bass that you praised should tell you how important it is to have players on the low block who can box out and grab rebounds. The fact that Z/Lebron/any tall guy gets those rebounds is because they’re a good rebounder and have enough of their coach’s trust (coaches do know everything) to be put in those spots.
March 2nd, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Those rebounds are meaningless…until someone gives up an offensive board in a crucial spot, then they can mean everything.
March 2nd, 2008 at 9:01 pm
All I’m asking Nick is for rebounds to be classified as “possession saving” or “pedestrian” …therefore, we would know EXACTLY who the best rebounders are without wondering who received the most gimmies. You wouldn’t want that information? I know in the past I’ve talked about “boxing out” – and wanting to know who actually does it. But to be honest, that would be more important in college basketball – since athleticism in the NBA allows players to just go get the ball and give up good rebounding position.

They have’t released any data yet, but they’re close.
I really encourage you to read the book Wages of Wins, or at the very least the difference between the labor theory of value and the market approach.

I don’t care what anyone says, Jeff Van Gundy is a great analyst. He’s kind of annoying, but he always comes through with one or two points that make you respect his opinion. His and Mark Jackson’s takes on Dick Bavetta early in the game were classic… and the ESPN commercial with Van Gundy and Jackson is great as well.
I’d take Van Gundy and Jackson along with Jon Miller over Joe Morgan for Sunday Night Baseball any day of the week.

agree completley with patrick.. morgan is a talentless piece of crap.. i love van gundy, he makes good points, and hubie brown while long-winded is also very informative. not to mention they are along side the best play by play man in the business, mike breen..
March 3rd, 2008 at 8:28 am
I don’t think anyone would choose Morgan over anybody.

that was a nice dunk but will someone jump with him please. at least make it hard for him to go to the basket. smother him and knock Lebron down every drive he got.
i dunk like that with a tennis ball on my kids nurf hoop. its nothing
