Were the Eagles Really Close to Landing Randy Moss?
NFL March 4th. 2008, 11:54am
We must have scrolled through two dozen stories about how the Eagles were thisclose to signing Randy Moss … but not one of them floats an actual salary offer. Not even John Clayton! Hmmmm. Anyone find this fishy?
Take Asante Samuel’s signing. He’s a top-tier CB and said he wanted to win … and then when the Eagles offered him a few more million a year than the Patriots, he immediately backtracked and let it be known that it was all about the money (In Peter King’s wettest dream!). “The Patriots were only going to pay me $6 million a year. The Eagles went to $9.5M a year. Do I look that stupid to turn down all that money?”
Where are we going with this? It’s that nettlesome conspiracy theory side of us that sometimes bubbles up when our defenses are down. Were the Eagles “talking” to Randy Moss to give the appearance that they really are trying to improve the team and calm their anxious quarterback, Donovan McNabb, when in reality, they were never close? Who knows. Obviously this is an argument that could last forever, until more proof is unearthed … but take a look at this list (surely one of many) of potential places Moss could land. It was compiled Monday morning. No Eagles.

Asante Samuel would have looked pretty stupid for turning down an extra 3.5 million a year

Another question – is Asante that good or does he fall into the abyss? Just seems like one of those guys that used to leave the great Cowboy teams in the early 90’s and fall off the face of the earth.

I thought the same thing when I heard about him leaving.

It should ALWAYS be about the money…especially in the NFL. Average career is 4 years. You make your money when you can and hope that in a league that prides itself on parity, you will get your chance at glory.

wall – perfectly said.

Asante is the real deal. Glad he actually admitted why he left. The I just want to get back to the Super Bowl was one of the dumbest lines ever uttered by an athlete. Uh, the team you just played for went 18-1, dumbass.
That’s a great picture of Randy and Tom.

The Eagles have been trying to ‘Gasol’ Fitzgerald away from the Cardinals

“No, I will not make an “I’m F****** Tom Brady” video with you, freak.”

Andy Reid was on Mike & Mike this morning and it soudned pretty real. He threw out a name who they were working it through but I do not think the guy was an agent which might be why no figures were mentioned anywhere.
March 4th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Yea they are offering Lito Sheppard and a #2 draft pick for Fitzy…I hear the cards want a 1 and a 2 plus Lito
March 4th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
I don’t think Asante said that – that was PK’s interpretation yesterday about what Asante should have said.

Moss’ motivation will be in question next year, ye got a $12mil bonus, last year he was on a 1 year deal. No way he puts up huge numbers again, this guy is a snake.
March 4th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
I am not thrilled about the Eagles signing Samuel but the Eagles problem (and it will continue to be a problem) is they run a blitz happy defense with no dominant pass rushers and a pass first offense with no dominant WR…

grungedave is CORRECT.

Cubs outfielder Felix Pie missed a couple of days early because of a twisted testicle.
Bahahahhahah.

Asante could be pretty good in Philly, but he didn’t have a great season last year. Two years ago, he was one of the best in the league, but he made bad choices last year. That’s why his picks were down.

I can’t believe no one has played caption contest with that picture yet.
Brady: I really, really appreciate EVERYTHING you do for me.
Moss: What the fuck?

Tom Brady: Hey little buddy
Moss: Sausages?
March 4th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
I think the Eagles were aggressively going after Moss. The goal is to win the Super Bowl, right? Well, if the Eagles could get Moss (whom they can afford) wouldn’t they be the early-season favorites (for whatever that’s worth).
Now, I don’t think Moss ever wanted to leave NE, but that’s not the question you posed. I think he was “using” the Eagles, probably not the other way around.

So is Daunte Culpepper going to replace Matt Cassel as the backup in New England?
March 4th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
However, there is no doubt it’s good PR for the Eagles (”hey, we tried as hard as we could!”) — whether for the fans or for DMac.
March 4th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
TBL, heed Grungedave’s tip: Asante did NOT backtrack at all.
March 4th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Ugh TBL, I didn’t want to say you were wrong even though I thought Asante never backtracked, I learned a lesson.
March 4th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Andy, for pete’s sake. Give them a 1st 2nd and Lito for Larry Fitz!
March 4th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
You read the quote wrong. Samuel claimed it wasn’t about the money and Peter King wished that a player would say, “The Patriots were only going to pay me $6 million a year. The Eagles went to $9.5M a year. Do I look that stupid to turn down all that money?â€
March 4th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Why does Arizona want to get rid of Larry Fitzgerald? Is he saying he won’t re sign or something?
March 4th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
@Gonzo- I agree with you. If that is what it takes then just do it. Larry Fitz is 24! a 1st and 2nd plus Lito is still a great deal to get Fitzgerald
March 4th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
sorry grunge, I didn’t see your comment.
March 4th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
The Cardinals are stupid thats why. They are getting killed because Larry Fitzgerald hit all his incentives and is slated to make 14.5 and like 17.5 over the next two years respectively. Rather then offer him a chance to opt out like most teams do, Rod Graves decided to give him more money for hitting his goals.
March 4th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Andy Reid won’t do it. He signed Kevin curtis last year for what amounts to $6Mil a year. He would never have 2 WR’s making that much money.
it’s just wishful thinking.
March 4th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Lito Sheppard is injured all the time, I agree, the Eagles need to do whatever it takes to get Fitzgerald.
The Washington Post was saying the Eagles were trying to pawn Lito off on the Redskins but the Redskins weren’t biting.
March 4th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Yea but if they got Fitz, Curtis could put up Welker numbers
March 4th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
@cbh49er — The amount of money they owed him this season (and next) is ridiculous, so it tied them up in terms of being able to obtain decent free agents.
However, since they haven’t been able to reach a new deal with Fitzgerald that would free up some money AND all the decent free agents are gone, they are almost certainly going to just pay him this year. The window for obtaining Fitzgerald is likely closed.
March 4th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
i hope i can get moss again this year in fantasy football
March 4th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
The Cardinals just need to suck it up and give him the extension he wants. He wants 4 years 27 mill guranteed on like a 42 million total contract. That is pretty reasonable on Fitz part since he could just keep his current contract and have that 27 mill in 2 years. But no the cardinals are trying to low ball him and get him on a 6 year deal.
March 4th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
And why is it that players are always willing to “take a discount” to play for NE. Fucking Gummi Berry Juice, Bellicheck gets them hooked and they can’t live without it.
March 4th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
I don’t blame Asante for leaving, nor do I blame him for saying it was about winning. If he had said money was his reason, which is what we’re all saying we wish he had said, the media would then go back to the other side: “Oh, he’s so greedy. He should want to win in NE instead of playing for an awful franchise, blah blah.”
