Top Shelf: Get Ready for the Ovechkam
NHL March 6th. 2008, 11:08am
We’ve never been to Wrigley. What are we missing? Perhaps hockey, soon. Lee Diekemper recaps the night in the NHL.
Chicago 3, Anaheim 0: The ‘Hawks continue to play well in a late push for the playoffs. Goalie Corey Crawford records a shutout in his first start of the season to beat the “dirty” Ducks. Gary Bettman hints that the baseball stadium currently known as Wrigley Field could host a Winter Classic.
Washington 3, Buffalo 1: A mere two goals from Alexander Ovechkin in his march to 60. At least viewers of “OvechKam” were happy.
San Jose 3, Ottawa 2 (OT): Patrick Marleau’s overtime goal, his second of the game, finished the Sens. No telling when Ryane Clark or Curtis Brown may take the ice again.
Phoenix 2, Dallas 1: Rough home loss by the Stars on a night the Wings won. Has the Stars’ offense suddenly gone cold or did the Stars deserve what they received?
Detroit 4, St. Louis 1: Pavel Datsyuk scored twice and the Wings are getting healthy just in time. Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom should return Sunday but Jonathon Ericsson has filled Lidstrom’s void nicely.

If the rangers put Kim K’s ass in goal, could she stop more pucks than Lumberg?

Wrigley is awesome with a capital A. The nostalgia isn’t as thick as it is in Yankee Stadium, but it’s truly spectacular. I would strongly suggest going. I saw 3 games in 2 days there. 2 at Wrigley and 1 at The Cell. Good Times.

That link about the Ducks is perfect. I would cheer for the Red Wings over them in the playoffs this season if they meet.
Oh yeah Brian Burke is an asshole

Wrigley smells like pee and we were seated in the last row of the lower deck and you lost fly balls because of the balcony

This explains Wrigley field perfectly…

Oh this is a hockey post. The Sharks game was on here in Philly last night. Sorry to say I couldn’t stay up to watch it. But West Coast hockey seems to be alot more fun than East Coast.

Wrigley sucks if you are in the shade in the lower deck, but on a warm, sunny day, it’s tough to beat. The rear 25 rows of the lower grandstand are like sitting in a warehouse. Upper deck is okay, but either pop for the good seats or the bleachers.

As a die-hard Cardinals fan, I can say every time I have been to Wrigley it’s been a hell of a time. The Bleachers are an intense time. When I arrive I feel like I am in prison, in the sense, that I immedately try to find a group of Cardinals fans. Safety in numbers. I don’t know how it is for other opposing fans, but for Cardinal fans it is volatile.

ASU: That must be like a Phils fan like me going to a Mets game in NY, and vice versa. I was in Chicago to root on the Phils (The Cubs won). But It was a terrific time. The Cubs fans didnt get on us too much. more like good natured ribbing.

As a White Sox fan who lived for a few years within spitting distance of Wrigley, the best thing I can say about it is that the talent in the bars immediately after a weekend afternoon game is unmatched in the city.
March 6th, 2008 at 11:46 am
@Ben: Those bars are FLOODED with talent post game. It’s painful when a dime piece is screaming curse words at you because your Cardinals absolutely worked her Cubbies. Gets you thinking that maybe you should throw on a Cubs hat so you can land a piece of the top notch trim down in Wrigleyville.

weird thing about going to cards-cubs game at wrigley: before the game, both teams’ fans are getting sloshed together without much of a problem.
once inside the stadium all hell breaks loose.
after the game, they’re back getting shitfaced together almost as if nothing happened during the game.
a cards-cubs game, whether at wrigley or busch, is the closest thing to a college football game i’ve ever seen in baseball. the crown is almost always half-red, half-blue no matter if it’s in st. louis or chicago.
it’s certainly a spectacle.

@Gonzo: East Hockey is fun because it’s faster and more goals are scored, but on the left side of the country there are hits and fights and physical play.
I went to Chi-town and the Cubs were playing the Giants (when both Sosa and Bonds playing). I didn’t have a rooting interest in either team so I just wore normal clothes, jeans T-shirt. I fit right in. Wrigley was neat, but the novelty wore off by about the third inning. If my friend and I hadn’t spotted seats right behind home on the second deck to move into, I would have been disapointed.
The best part about Wrigley was getting pizza before the game there. The friend I was travelling with, who was a kinda of prude naïve girl, walked in on a guy getting a BJ in the bathroom. Her reaction alone was comedy at it’s finest.

My friend walked in on a guy
a BJ in the bathroom.
/Fixed for higher comedy.

You’re right Gonzo that would be higher comedy, but still pretty funny as is.

Did anyone actually see the Blackhawks – Ducks game last night? The highlights this morning made them out to be wannabe Broad Street Bullies… I just hope that they took as much punishment as they gave out last night.
The next person that takes out Pronger needs to do a better job. I can’t stand seeing his shit-eating grin all over the ice.

@Potvin:
My blog post today was about how much I hate the ducks
