Bummer: Bob Costas Hates Bloggers
Media Gossip/Musings March 14th. 2008, 8:00amYou know what’s happening, right? A year or two ago, all these sports blogs you read while surfing the net at work were fun and cute and a neat exercise in writing, where random people with keyboards - all together now, say it loud and say it proud, FROM MOM’S BASEMENT - could opine on the merits of Tommy Tuberville’s fourth quarter playcalling, the Rick Reilly-Dan Patrick swap, and who bears a closer resemblance to Sideshow Bob, the 6th man on the Cavs or one of the Lopez twins at Stanford.
Then, somewhere along the line, a blogger or 200 asked for media credentials and it was like, ‘whoa, hold the email, you want what?’ and some bloggers got mad and felt rejected and the Establishment was like, ‘these people are just angry jerkoffs’ and fun and cute was summarily replaced with mean and bitter. Today, a journalism idol of ours, Bob Costas, delivers the coup de grace - bloggers are idiots.
But it’s one thing if somebody just sets up a blog from their mother’s basement in Albuquerque and they are who they are, and they’re a pathetic get-a-life loser, but now that pathetic get-a-life loser can piggyback onto someone who actually has some level of professional accountability and they can be comment No. 17 on Dan Le Batard’s column or Bernie Miklasz’ column in St. Louis. That, in most cases, grants a forum to somebody who has no particular insight or responsibility. Most of it is a combination of ignorance or invective.”
What bothers Costas — and he’s not alone — is Internet and talk radio commentary that “confuses simple mean-spiritedness and stupidity with edginess. Just because I can call someone a name doesn’t mean I’m insightful or tough and edgy. It means I’m an idiot.
“It’s just a high-tech place for idiots to do what they used to do on bar stools or in school yards, if they were school yard bullies, or on men’s room walls in gas stations. That doesn’t mean that anyone with half a brain should respect it.”
Disappointing stuff, Bob. Would your SI Newshouse professors feel the same way? How about you put away the broad brush and we call it even and pretend like this never happened? Also, if blogs anger you so, we humbly advise you to treat blogs the way we treat Jay Mariotti/Scoop Jackson columns - don’t read ‘em. As for the credentials issue, it seems like such a tired and boring discussion. The organization makes a decision, and bloggers will deal with it. Some teams - the New York Islanders - will embrace the idea, and happily give bloggers access. Others - the Dallas Mavericks - feel otherwise. Why is this still a federal case?

So because Bob Costas talks on TV his opinion is informed and well thought out but since you are sitting there doing curls and posting your opinion on the internet you are a loser…Bob Costas is a Hack…he is no better than anyone else…in fact his opinion means less to me because I doubt he even watches these sporting events closely anymore…go count you money and be thankful and maybe remember the days when you started out and understand that is what these bloggers are trying to do as well.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:13 am
Costas has obviously not seen the picture of TBL on the river. He would totally change his mind after that.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:16 am
There are bloggers that call people mean names and there are bloggers that actually have something to say. Why does the media continue to paint with the broadest of strokes? Costas and his ilk just get more and more out of touch as time progresses. Eventually they will leave, and the world will rejoice.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:16 am
Bob Costas needs to enter the 21st Century. Embrace what scares you, funny old man. I think Costas will someday, within two years, start his own blog.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:21 am
Maybe this is just me, but I have a standard set of blogs that I read daily. Most of these blogs have links to articles written by people such as Costas, Ryan, Kornheiser, etc.
My point being, these writers need to realize that bloggers are actually helping them by pointer readers to their articles and thus upping their readership.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:25 am
Wow, I mean just wow. Even if you might think it, don’t say it. He basically just called every person on the internet a retard who isn’t good enough to have an opinion.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:27 am
Heh.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:28 am
Bob Costas is a midget.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:30 am
Mike..it was a bicep joke
March 14th, 2008 at 8:31 am
bob costas is smartest man in sports journalism. just ask him.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:31 am
“It means I’m an idiot.” Why yes you are, Bob.
It looks like Costas has finally entered grouchy old man sports journalism territory.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:32 am
Bob Costas is wading into the Mike Lupica pool. Scumbags.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:37 am
I like Costas, even after this. He knows the subject on which he speaks - except for this time. Isn’t it ironic that his opinion on bloggers’ narrowmindedness only shows his narrowmindedness?
March 14th, 2008 at 8:37 am
I bet there aren’t very many basements in Albuquerque. Let’s try to find out who he’s talking about!
March 14th, 2008 at 8:38 am
I would like to see Beano Cook slap Costas with a mic.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:40 am
I actually agree with Costas a bit here.
(ducking)
Most bloggers. Most–not all–are nothing but glorified talk show callers that bring little to the discussion other than a heaping helpful of invective. These are the guys who having nothing but contempt for the athletes, coaches, and fans–and probably don’t even watch the games.
Obviously, by my being here, I don’t believe that is the case with TBL. And, I could give you a list of a half dozen or so others that are quite good…but most of the sports blog landscape is pretty bleak.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:44 am
I got it RWH, that’s why I laughed.
OT: but more reading from yesterday, if you’re interested.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:44 am
“And another thing,” Costas added, “get off my lawn.”
March 14th, 2008 at 8:47 am
The only time I’ve ever enjoyed Costas was his guest appearance on “Space Ghost Coast to Coast”.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:47 am
This is disappointing to the point of depressing. I loved Costas’ work. He’s a resident here in my city, and seemed like a good guy. But the intellectual high and mighty stuff is sad. I have a blog, Bobby, and I don’t call anyone names. I talk about football. And for that I’m an idiot?
March 14th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Why has no one looked into the disturbing trend of the bloggers’ absentee fathers? It’s always the mothers’ basements. Do people blog to fill the void created when their fathers abandoned them? This demands research!
March 14th, 2008 at 8:55 am
Mike…I would love to go back and forth on it…but I know it’s not going to make a difference…my point is and remains to be…you can have people in your life that you trust and love that you don’t agree with on everything…I believe the minister uses provocative statements to get a point across just like many other minsters in this country do and who have loyal followings by politicians, celerities, athletes and regular people…I am Catholic and I don’t believe everything my church and pastor believes but it doesn’t make me not practice and go to church…I believe we tend to look at these candidates and celebrities in general as two dimensional and apply an a + b = c theory to them when in life we as humans are more complex and the relationships we have with people are not cut an dry.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:55 am
The mom’s basement joke is beyond tired.
I can’t stand elitist Bob Costas. You cover sports Bob! Stop acting like you are God’s gift to the world.
TBL should just beat his ass! Oh wait I cursed so I must think I’m edgy when I am really just an idiot.
I will gladly be called an idiot if Bob Costas get’s his ass kicked, he must have the Napoloen (sp?) Complex.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:00 am
I dont know about you guys, but when I think of Costas I picture Women’s Bobsleddings and Barry Bonds calling him a midget. Throw in the fact that he looks like an agent for Zac Attack and I am cool.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:06 am
Aren’t you…kind of reinforcing Costas’ point by making the personal attacks on him?
March 14th, 2008 at 9:06 am
Tommy Tuberville does make some pretty interesting playcalls in the 4th quarter. War Eagle.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:11 am
why wouldnt teams want to give credentials to bloggers? not only would that create a groundswell of informed fan support (i.e. blog readers) but it would allow blogs to get a more informed opinion.
it just seems like an illogical opinion when anti-blog guys say that bloggers aren’t truly ‘informed’ yet the established media does everything they can to keep blogs out.
HYPOCRITES.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:12 am
We live in America, why shouldn’t I be granted a forum to express my views?
Bob Costas attacked bloggers, does that make him an idiot? So he can call bloggers and their readers out but I am supposed to respect the little turd, forget it.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:22 am
RWH, just wanted to pass it along.
He’s not saying you shouldn’t be allowed to express them; he’s saying a lot of bloggers put out mindless tripe, and he’s right.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:26 am
it is true, but the cream always rises.
nobody goes to withleather.com to get actual sports coverage, thats entertainment…kinda like what ESPN has become.
but EDSBS, profootballtalk.com, free darko…all those sites would be greatly enhanced if they got some extra access.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:29 am
But he definitely comes across as an ass:
“Today, I saw on ESPN a poll about which Western Conference teams would not make the playoffs,” Costas said. “Well, 46 percent said the Denver Nuggets, which has zero percent influence on anything. No reasonable person who cares about the NBA should care about that. Who has the time or the inclination to do this, even if you’re sitting on your computer? Why would you weigh in on it?”
I often find myself thinking the same thing whenever Stephen A. pops up on the TV.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:30 am
First, I’m not sure that everyone here has actually read the article.
What Costas is basically saying is that the quality/merits of blogs is suspect relative to the old-school media. As I said earlier, there is something to be said for this. Most of the blogs are garbage that are run by guys with either no journalistic background or no appreciation for the craft. And, they are so great in number that there’s just no way sports teams can reasonably be expected to grant credentials to everyone.
I don’t want to belabor this, but most of the blogs out there really don’t offer anything whatsoever. On this site, Jason actually writes and interviews. At a place like With Leather, you’re really just getting links and pictures of naked chicks. And, that’s all well and good (I like my links and babes as much as the next guy), but this isn’t really moving the ball toward actual analysis/discussion. And, there are far more sites like Ufford’s than TBL’s.
That’s just my opinion…I could be wrong.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:33 am
@ Mike NYC - Yeah, Costas’ comment there (saying, in essence, “why should anyone care about this?”) was a bit much. Otherwise, I do agree with him for the most part.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:35 am
And, on a sad note…my employer has tightened up the old firewall a bit. I can no longer see Hollywood Tuna or view my teams on whatifsports.com.
The flag is at half mast in my corner of the universe.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:36 am
412, try going to those sites through this one.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:37 am
I will say this…I read the blogs that don’t put out as much mindless tripe…as spencer says the cream rises to the top…I go to the blogs that follow my teams closely without getting insane…I come here because its a mix of a lot of things I like and some I don’t but then get to comment my displeasure on…but look at TV…there is mindless tripe on most of the sports shows on TV…please and even the “respected shows I have to watch a guy like Anthony Amey butcher the English language on a “news” program…I go to newspapers and have to read the Wallace Matthews and the Mike Lupicas of the worlds write inflammatory garbage with no journalistic point to it…there is tons of garbage in all media…some people are garbage pickers and some are not…but for Bob to act like he is above it is shit…he spent a period intermission during the NHL game in Buffalo taking about getting into a fight with a minor league hockey player 30 years ago…way to promote yourself and not the sport…it was tripe just like the blogs you despise
March 14th, 2008 at 9:38 am
ill admit it, i didnt read the article, i just read the quote TBL blocked…
i agree there is a lot of pointless blogs out there, but at the same time, for every major sport, there are great, informative blogs. if youre a golfer, theres geoffshackelford.com thats just as informative as anything on golfdigest.com or golf.com (SI). id rather read freedarko than anything that Bucher or Stein write for the WWL and Florio at PFT is way more connected than Len Pasquerelli or Sal Pal.
no, but sports teams do have PR depts where they can screen blog applicants and see whos on the up and up. if orson at EDSBS was given access to UF and could report shit from inside places we dont usually hear about, that’d be great, especially with as talented a writer as he is.
i think most teams just are too anal about what they want being aired, which is why blogs dont get the access MSM does. but to say that a blogger is incapable of delivering great info is 100%, pure, grade A bullflop. and there are numerous high-profile media members who have said that, which sucks.
its an old debate tho, no need to rehash.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:47 am
My two cents: part of what Costas says is true (many bloggers out there aren’t adding anything to the conversation other than their attempt at sardonic, often pointless analysis), part of what he says sounds like someone who refuses to let go of the old establishment.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:53 am
@ Mike NYC - Thanks, but the bastids are blocking that site as well!
March 14th, 2008 at 9:55 am
But 412, no one cares about those blogs. Of course there’s crap out there, but judging all blogs by the lowest common denominator would be homologous (thats right Bob, I can use big words too) to judging all newspapers by the Altoona Mirror. There are far more horrible small town newspapers than NYTimes out there, but we don’t marginalize the Times simply because a large number of similar offerings provide little value to the average person.
March 14th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Lenn Sakatas +1
March 14th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Let’s face it. You don’t see jounalists showing a picture of scantily clad women to lead in with their opening headline (aka Morning Roundup). Then, instead of commenting on the stories, most of us describe all the naughty things we would do to the women. and discuss whether she is hot or not.
I’m not knocking TBL for this. This is what us commenters enjoy with our morning Mountain Dew (or coffee for you oldheads).
March 14th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Gonzo you should see todays NY Post
March 14th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Gonzo..Every tabloid in NY had the half naked pictures of Spitzer’s hooker on the cover…they are not above showing ass to get people to buy their product.
March 14th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Agree with the412’s points.
Also, enough about the access. To me it’s all about accountability and professionalism. As tired and cliched as you guys seem to think it sounds, it’s dead on. 90% of the blogs out there are garbage (partly because all they do is links/chicks/comment on other stories) but mostly because there is no professional standard to adhere to. At least when I’m reading someone from SI or ESPN, I know that he has his name/reputation/job on the line with everything he writes. In short, he has to answer to somebody. Now, his writing/opinion can be just as bad or worse than Joe Bloggers’, but at least I have that assurance.
This is why TBL is the only blog I visit. He has a journalism background and was a professional in the field and you can easily tell.
