Clemson Shocks Headline Writers…
College Basketball March 15th. 2008, 5:43pmIn T minus 25 hours or so, we will have NCAA Tournament regions to break down and argue over. Before that, we’ll have another night and day of games to sift through. First, the games of today…
Much to the dismay of Patrick and Vitale, the Dukies failed to make the the ACC Finals, losing to 24-8 Clemson 78-74. Clemson will meet North Carolina tomorrow, after UNC squeaked by Virginia Tech by 2. It means the Hokies have lost by 2 and 1 to the two teams vying for the ACC crown tomorrow (we refrain from mentioning what UNC did to Tech early in the season). Also, I found this headline on SI to be quite hilarious:
“Clemson shocks Duke for rare ACC title berth”
Really? A 24-8 team defeating a Duke team that now has 5 losses is a “shock”? If the win was by 34 instead of 4, then yes, shocking could be the word.
Wisconsin defeated Michigan State 65-63 and Illinois outlasted Minnesota. The two victors will meet tomorrow for the Big 10 Championship. Â The loss is crippling for Minnesota who fell to 20-13 and should have beaten Illinois, now 16-18. In Big XII play, Texas pounced all over Oklahoma and Kansas beat Texas Tech, making a most excellent Big XII Championship on Sunday for all to enjoy.Â
Georgia will have the Saturday double dip. They defeated Kentucky by 4 in overtime early today and face Mississippi State tonight. The winner of that game will face the winner of Tennessee/Arkansas, battling as we type. Also playing right now are Stanford and UCLA, the winner to be crowned PAC 10 champion.Â
Memphis is your Conference USA Champion, having defeated Tulsa by 26.Â
See you tomorrow morning.

I didn’t see any Pittsburgh “shocks” Marquette headlines.

Even though I’m a Badger seeing Illinois win would be fascinating just to see how low the Committee would seed aa sub-.500 team from a BCS conference…Bruce Weber should borrow Sidney Lowe’s blood red blazer from last season for luck

It’s even better when an ACC football team that’s better than Florida State or Miami beats one of them, and they still consider it a shocker.

Edit: Kansas beat Texas A&M

Its “shocking” because clemson hasn’t been there since the 60’s, that and Duke’s the favorite son of columnists et al. But yeah, I agree that its a bit of an overstatement.

What will be “shocking” to me is when Duke still gets a 2-seed tomorrow, and Clemson will be like a 6 or 7.
March 15th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Seriously, can I start filling out my brackets now?
March 15th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Duke can get a 2 seed with this loss? Not sure about that. Have to figure that G’Town, Kansas, and Wisconsin are locked in … and the 4th, I suppose, would be a tossup between Stanford, Texas, and Duke.
March 15th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
On Clemson: Duke lives and dies by robotic three point shooting. If some cog is out of wack and they’re playing a tourney-worthy team such as Clemson, then there goes the game. Mad props to Clemson for the upset, but it’s not as big a surprise as some would make it out.
The Falcons made a good deal: Hall is a great, great athlete who never has developed the technique to be a legitimate cover corner, let alone the “shut down” man he’s supposed to be. A second round pick is a good trade off for a player who gained accolades by being a “tallest midget at the circus” type player on a bad team.

I can still see them going Duke over Texas and Stanford. Unless one of them win the conference tourney.
March 15th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Well, the Raiders are set at cornerback. 20 more starters to go…..
March 15th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
I guess it’s an upset because Clemson hadn’t beaten Duke since 1997. Clemson was the third best team in the ACC, and it wasn’t close after that. Is Tennessee still a #1 seed after losing to Arkansas?
March 15th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
It’s Duke. Unless they lose to UNC, UCLA, or Kansas, it’s going to be a “shock”, which of course is pure bullshit. But that’s how they’ve been ingrained into the minds of the MSM.

We have our first team with a losing record in the dance!
March 15th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
any time a top ten team loses to a non ranked team its a shock, get off the cross we need the wood. especially considering the fact that duke has been in seven of the last eight acc finals and as mentioned clemson hasnt been there in forever. you people bitch about how they talk about duke losing? the hate on is not healthy
March 15th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
I can’t believe the Hoyas KEEP jacking three’s, and I can’t believe Hibbert picked up two bad fouls on mental fuckups in a three second span. Ugh.
Pittsburgh will make many FF brackets …
March 15th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
It’s just the hyperbole. If this was a “shocker,” then how do you categorize Appalachian State beating Michigan?
March 15th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Ok, blind resume time. No looking
35 RPI
35 SOS
9-6 vs the top 100
4-4 vs the top 50
Win over the #11 RPI team on the road
Bad losses: #185, 164, 133, 120
In or out?
March 15th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Looks like an “In” to me
March 15th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
ESPN has a “countdown clock” for when they reveal the brackets. Seriously? They’re counting down when they reveal the bracket AFTER CBS has already revealed it?
I have officially seen it all
March 15th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
asu was more than a shocker yeah. i just dont think that the media is trying to be like ‘omg duke lost the king is dead!’. clemson really controlled that game, maybe it isnt a complete shock but it was definitely a pretty big upset.
