ESPN’s NY/Boston Love Affair Continues
Baseball, ESPN March 18th. 2008, 11:13am
Our hockey writer, Lee Diekemper, sent us an email at 11:35 this morning, alerting us to check out the ESPN baseball headlines. Nine headlines, and only two of them didn’t include the Yankees, Mets or Red Sox. Did contraction happen and we not get the memo?

And when you throw in Mets/Nats, Pedro, and Kazmir, every headline but the last one is regarding the Northeast.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Roberts is referring to Brian Roberts of the Orioles…thats NE (sorta)
March 18th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Northeast rules the sporting landscape!
/
March 18th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Where do you see Roberts?
March 18th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Which is why the NBA is awesome right now. Because its all about the West
March 18th, 2008 at 11:19 am
That’s freaking awesome. Nice find, Hockey Writer Man!
March 18th, 2008 at 11:22 am
What is the hockey guy doing looking at the baseball page?
/everyone must fit into my stereotype guy.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:23 am
I didn’t read the post and just saw “Colon Rocked”…I was afraid Bob Costas was going to frown on this website.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:24 am
I can’t wait for Yankees to wave Magic Wang.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:25 am
not one word about the SF Giants?!?
March 18th, 2008 at 11:26 am
and Kazmir used to be a Met. that’s awesome.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Reason 325 why I rarely go to ESPN for sports news anymore.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:27 am
Didn’t ESPN do something like this last fall right before football season? Except instead of Sox, it was Pats.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:27 am
Not that anyone should service fantasy owners, but this Evan Longoria to AAA rumor is news, no?
Or is it all rumors in Spring Training?
March 18th, 2008 at 11:27 am
@ Sportsgal: Only 325?
March 18th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Anyone else hear the latest from Hank? He was talking about the revenue sharing and how other teams are not using their money to better their teams like the Yanks do. As much as I think that guy is a douche, he was right about this one.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Brave, I have at least 500 reasons, in no particular order…
March 18th, 2008 at 11:29 am
I can’t believe Tony Parker’s wife has a drinking problem.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:30 am
I was a die hard ESPN guy forever, now I venture away more than ever
March 18th, 2008 at 11:31 am
TBL, I am one of those fantasy players that don’t even think about touching a rookie guy on draft day. I would rather take the old vet any day rather than risk the chance on someone who will probably bat .230 and end up being a bust. For every Ryan Braun, there are a million Alex Gordons.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:31 am
LOL
March 18th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Evan Longoria had a nice article done on him in recently by SI. I am surprised he is going down to AAA
March 18th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Just for perspective, take a look at the top headlines on Yahoo sports - they have one story about the yankees, two on the NCAA bracket (men and women), one on HOCKEY (when’s the last time you saw a hockey headline on ESPN), and two on the NBA.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Going to ESPN for baseball coverage is an exercise in futility. They cater to the masses, and why shouldn’t they? They’re making a gazillion dollars this way, right?
To be fair, ESPN.com has been doing a great job on the NCAA tourney coverage.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:34 am
@pki: I think it’s about draft position. Taking Longoria in the 10th is crazy, but as your last pick, why not? Same thing with other prospects (Bruce, the younger Upton, etc.).
March 18th, 2008 at 11:35 am
True, PKI, unless you are in a keeper leagues. If you grab Longoria in the 22nd round and if he has a .300 15-90 season and is poised to dominate in 09, you consider keeping him, because that kind of value in the 22nd round is sweet.
Last year, someone drafted Hanley Ramirez in the 25th round; obviously, he’s a keeper. My lowest was Prince Fielder last year in the 14th; i could have kept Hunter Pence at 25 (freelance), but i opted for Cano instead (4th).
March 18th, 2008 at 11:37 am
Hanley could go 40-40 this year year or next and I wouldn’t be surprised (even though his home park is awful for power numbers)
March 18th, 2008 at 11:38 am
@ben: I completely agree with you on that one. Also, I am a little nervous about advertising my draft strategies here especially with tomorrow’s draft coming up.
With that being said, everyone in the TBL draft: Don’t forget that Pryor, Bonds, and Clemens are really going to have breakout years. You should really think about getting them early on.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:38 am
Sportsgal, this is just the baseball page.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:41 am
Ha ha ha! Well that makes a little more sense… I’m telling you, I killed some major brain cells this weekend!
March 18th, 2008 at 11:42 am
Sportsgal - I count 1 FIGURE Skating and 1 soccer on the main page. There were two hockey games last night. Whoopie. Mike beat me to the point this is just Baseball.
Oh, and the Ombudsmans newest piece was great.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:44 am
FWIW, the Longoria demotion is rumored to only last 11 days. This will push back his free agency clock by one year.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:45 am
I killed some major brain cells this weekend!
So, you partied this weekend because of the holiday, and a couple weeks ago out of the country. Do you ever take time off from getting blitzed?
March 18th, 2008 at 11:46 am
So Sportsgal you sent a photo to TBL he actually used a couple posts back?
March 18th, 2008 at 11:49 am
This weekend? Try last night!
March 18th, 2008 at 11:51 am
THE reason why SI is where I get all my news now.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:51 am
@pki: Dwight Howard = my first round pick = lock for MVP.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Yes, that was me in the hockey post.
Listen, before everyone starts assuming I’m a huge lush, March is a major boozing month for me - I had a “spring break” vacation the first week, St. Patrick’s festivities this past weekend, NCAA tournament and a birthday party this weekend, and a friend visiting from out of town the last weekend of the month.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:56 am
To be fair, no other region of the country has weather good enough to play baseball right now. Late winter in the North East just provides a favorable climate. Jealousy doesn’t become you Southerners and mid-Westerners.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:56 am
you have a nice little saturday planned for yourself
March 18th, 2008 at 11:57 am
Wow you are a lush!
/self reflects
/weeps
my apologies
March 18th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
Sportsgal, I would prefer to think of you as a lush.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
A lush without a beer gut.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Van Pelt just name-dropped TBL re how to call in sick this week …
March 18th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Which means he really name dropped CorM.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Nah, this post.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
van pelt is a rare bright light in a warehouse of dim bulbs.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
For all you baseball fans check this out. PNC park made the top 5
March 18th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
van pelt is my favorite anchor. i also love Kenny Mayne, but he isnt around that much
March 18th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
I have been to PNC and Camden yards, and both those parks are great. Camden is great in September, because you can buy a really cheap ticket and then just go sit where you want. The ushers, like the fans have given up at this point and just don’t care.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Sportsgal…I like to envision both you and Guinness Girl scantily clad and breathlessly awaiting any comment from RomanWarHelmet…but thats just me..because I am a pervert
March 18th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
pnc park is a palace. best park i’ve been to, better than wrigley (wrigley is fun, don’t get me wrong).
the outfield skyline is spectacular.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Ah, my bad.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Okie Dokie RWH, I am just excited amongst all the yankees/sox crap my Rays got mentioned….
March 18th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Oh yeah, PNC Park is definitely awesome. Now that we finally have a true baseball park, the problem is the god-awful play on the field! 15 consecutive years of misery and counting…
March 18th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
In ESPN’s defense, nothing else of importance is happening today. Like the Rockets playing the Celtics. You know what would happen if that game wasn’t on TNT.
But as yesterday’s TBL post illustrated, critics who accuse ESPN of promoting itself over the leagues they are partnered with have absolutely no leg to stand on (in ESPN’s eyes).
March 18th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
As has been stated, this was their baseball page.
Rockets/Celtics is the top story under headlines.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Is Rockets/Celtics on national TV tonight? Tuesday there usually aren’t any national TV games.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
cbh49er, thank you. However, there is still no mention of Celtics/Rockets on the front page.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
It’s there. I apologize. Ignore the last comment
March 18th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
yeah, that yankees-va tech game is all the rage.
i know when florida state played the phillies it was a “stop the presses” moment.
