Nearly Madness in March: Duke Survives
College Basketball March 20th. 2008, 8:21pm
No. 15 Belmont 70
No. 2 Duke 71
This certainly qualified as madness. Should there be an asterisk because Coach K was ill? Gerald Henderson went coast-to-coast for a layup with 11 seconds left, and then Belmont’s gusty guard, Justin Hare threw up an airball, but the Bruins got it back on jump ball. Then Belmont foolishly threw away the inbounds pass, much to the chagrin of 95 percent of college basketball fans. DeMarcus Nelson though, bricked the front end of a 1 and 1. Hare’s 40-foot three at the buzzer came close.
Dammit.

2 questions:
1) what the hell was that kid thinking? How do you lob an air ball? How are his teammates not watching the ball and reacting?
2) You’re down by 1, 30-some seconds left. You wait until there’s less that 10 seconds and settle for a shot(if you call it that) that doesn’t even hit the rim?
Clear example of not being a big-time school and not playing in a big time conference.
March 20th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Also, not passing the ball to DaMarcus Nelson would have helped as well.
March 20th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Just so you know. I took Kansas State, and I feel vindicated for all the crap I took for doing so. USC is a fraud. Whoop whoop.
March 20th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
what just happened to all those people riding Mayo to the final 4??? Oops!
March 20th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Who gave you crap for KState?
Interesting Saturday line: Pitt is just a 1.5 favorite against Michigan State. Everyone and their mom is going to take the Panthers. You know which way to go. MSU can bang with them, and Morgan vs. Young should be fun.
March 20th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
fuck fuck fuck fuck.
Jesus Duke looked awful today…I really think coach K doesn’t even care about this year, he’s just preparing for the Olympics and next year’s team.
I wish I was able to not pick Duke to win it all, but alas, I just can’t help it. Another year, another lost bracket.
March 20th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
make that 12-0
March 20th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Did you enter our bracket challenge, Jeff?
March 20th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
yeah I did…I’m andres 1, J. Andres…creative huh?
March 20th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
ive got K State beating Wissy……we’ll see i guess
March 20th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Was I the only one who thought that Belmont’s coach shit a brick in the final minute of that game? They called timeout with 31 seconds left on the shotclock and then simply dribbled around and threw up a prayer. Then that inbounds play. That was awful.
March 20th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Hakeem – No. Best move would have been to pluck Bryce out of the crowd and let him draw it up.
Just getting this in late: GMU +7
March 20th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
K State was my first loss… I believed in Tim Floyd’s tourney experience, shame on me
March 20th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
ive got kstate takin next round too…hopefully beasley can stay out of foul trouble
March 20th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Well at least I’m not the only one.
March 20th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Come on Belmont. Not like that was Tyus Edney going the distance.
March 20th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
TBL: you ads are wayyy better now
March 20th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
cool
March 20th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
gonna watch Lost now … but i’ll refresh the page and if something happens, i can postpone lost until tomorrow.
March 20th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Hey, has anybody else been having trouble checking their picks on ESPN? Mine just kinda disappeared in the last 5 minutes or so.
March 20th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
i think they get a lot of traffic after games go final, so you just have to be patient
March 20th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
My 1st post, thanks TBL for the quick response. Been tryin to get on here a minute; I understand you don’t have time for the lil people.
March 20th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
the blowing of the belmont coach for his substitutions was absurd. oh my god he rotates people when they are tired or have foul trouble, GENIUS!
March 20th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Yeah, they just showed up again, I think the WWL hates me.
March 20th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Nailed the ND game. Didn’t buy the Mason hype. So far.
LOST cliffhanger: meh
March 20th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
apparently cbs sportsline bracket challenge thingy is down right now too
March 20th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
down to 8 people perfect still in the TBL pool
March 20th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
has anyone been beatin the bookie today

Got money on WVU, we’ll see how that goes
March 20th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Only 8 perfect. And I’m not one of them. And here I thoughtmy bracket smelled like frenh toast.
March 20th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
I improved in the evening bracket. No Big Ten teams were playing. My K-State Sweet Sixteen stays alive
March 20th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
im sure its been mentioned, but apparently mayo was wearing ‘nba socks’? what an asshole. glad to see usc gone
March 20th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Agreed Mole, I see Mayo as another Sebastian Telfair
March 20th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
what a lost cliffhanger! Dmn
but now we have to wait a month till the next ep?
March 20th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Odd Lost episode.
Damn Duke.
March 20th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
The cliffhanger brings up some questions, but I liked the episode as a whole more than the cliffhanger. I won’t spoil yet because everybody is watching the tournament. But when they said somebody would die, I told my wife “watch it be this person,” and I’ll be damned if I wasn’t right.
March 20th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Not that it makes a difference, but no way that Mount St. Mary’s belonged in the play-in game over Mississippi Valley. God they’re horrible.
March 20th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Will Wisconsin stop jackin’ three’s? Why? CSF is a team of shrimps, and Wisky should be attacking the basket at will. This is not rocket science, Mr. Soulja Boy.
CSF should get in foul trouble by the 8 min mark and Wisky will pull away. Maybe I’m telling myself that because i have the Badgers -12. Ugh.
March 20th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
hey jeff4jax go jags!!! duuuuuval
March 20th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Awful Announcing has an ESPN.com screen grab from after the Duke game was over. The headline reads “Whew! Duke Survives.” Yup, nobody would interpret that as a pro-Duke headline. And yes, the headline is now changed.
March 20th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Coach K won’t recruit people with tatoos therefore he gets scum players and Duke blows.
Does anyone out there agree that Gottliebs wife probabaly has a mildy sized bush?
March 20th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
ugh with the pro-duke crap. MAYBE it was ‘whew’ because they just survived what would have been one of the biggest tourney upsets ever. them losing would have been a much better story for them and would have given every one of their writers a story for this week. nah they would much prefer duke barely win.
duke has had many players with tattoos. true they dont have any cornrow players like carolina or a lineup of jailbirds like maryland but they arent exactly an all clean cut whitey program
March 20th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuvalllllllllllllllll….13-0 in the tourney now…looks like ucla and wisc should take their games…and ive got wvu in this other game….have a chance for my first ever perfect day
March 20th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
For those bashing Belmont’s play call, watch the replay – it was there. Just a horrendous lob throw. If he throws that pass to the outside of the screener’s right shoulder, it’s literally an uncontested layup.
March 20th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
yeah my bad I forgot Paulus has a tatoo of a rose on the small of his back and Scheyer has a sun on his ankle. Bottom line is duke mainly gets clean cut black players and a bucnh of white pansies. At least that is what they have now you puppies.

WVU-AZ is getting good – back to back three’s by Zona, and then a lucky bounced-in three for AZ … 63-59 WVU for the right to get BEAT by Duke (that’s right!)
March 20th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
theres nothing wrong with trying to not get kids with discipline problems
now not getting players who rebound, that is a problem
March 20th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Is Bob Wenzel getting paid to raise his voice an octave? I’m never heard him sound this energetic. His brooklyn accent is killing me! He’s actually been pretty humorous though.
March 20th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
We need a good finish TBL. I’d give the first day of the tournament an “F” so far if Belmont didn’t keep it close.
March 20th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
By the way, people were asking about the announcer paired with Jay Bilas.. it’s this guy: http://cbs.sportsline.com/cbssports/team/cblackburn
Another Cuse alum. (they all have better gigs than me)
March 20th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
I hope the players on arizona get sodomized if they blow this game……bums
March 20th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
13-3 with all Sweet Sixteen teams alive (if WVU wins). Well, I’ve done worse.
March 20th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
that my friends…is a perfect day…ill brag now since I know it’ll all come crashing down tomorrow
March 20th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
An F? Really? That Duke-Belmont game alone nearly made the day.
March 20th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Isnt Bob Wenzel the guy who coached at Rutgers and made his players run naked if they missed FTs?
Oh. No. That was Kevin Bannon.
March 20th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
thats pretty damn odd haha
March 20th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
An F without Belmont. With Belmont, much better.
March 20th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Outside of Duke/Belmont, aTm/BYU was the 2nd closest game. Marquette/Kentucky and WVU/Arizona were the only others that were completely watchable. USC/K State disappointed because of foul trouble and USC didn’t make a run.
March 20th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
4 people perfect through the first day…the first 4 games tomorrow should take that number down a little if not all the way…a few tough games…night everyone…enjoy your evenings
March 20th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Joey Alexander is going to rip up the Dukies on Saturday. It will be delicious.
March 20th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
For those bashing Belmont’s play call, watch the replay – it was there. Just a horrendous lob throw.
Yes, you were right CC. But did anyone see the Duke player under the basket THROW the Belmont player to the ground as the ball was lobbed? Horendous non-call.
March 20th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
Hey DougGottlieb, way to play the race card about Duke. It’s funny b/c I’m sure you’re a fat white dudes in your mid-’30s who still lusts after 18-year-olds on celebrity blogs. They recruit people that stay for more than one year, it isn’t about race at all, it’s pragmatism given the current rush to the NBA of a Beasley or Mayo. Want to talk about race? Look at how Coach K was the first person to stand up with Richardson and Cheney in the early ’90s when they made issues about the lack of diversity in Division 1 coaching. Oh, wait, you didn’t follow basketball back then, I forgot. My bad. Yeah, Duke isn’t that good this year, but you’re like Fox with the Obama speech if you throw race in the mix.
March 21st, 2008 at 12:56 am
He’s really not bashing race, it’s more of a class issue. Coach K will recruit black players, but only black guys from the suburbs, not from the hood. You’re never gonna see a black guy with neck tattoos and dreadlocks and a poor family background play for Duke. That’s perfectly fine if Coach K only wants to recruit “his” guys, but he’s ultimately gonna lose if he keeps passing on more talented players.
March 21st, 2008 at 1:36 am
all you people bitching about the headline look at the story on there now, in no world could you people say its pro-duke.
shitty article really, this is a young team that is going to be very good with these guys for a few years. the argument that they are a fading program because they havent won a title since 2001 is absolute garbage. winning the tourney let alone multiple tourneys in a decade is absurdly difficult. theres only been one repeat winner in that span and its florida, and theyre in the NIT. hey guess what so are maryland and syracuse, good work! duke had one down season and this season has been infinitively better. i dont expect them to win it all this year, but the next few seasons definitely look bright.
this win didnt do anything to hurt the ‘duke mystique,’ not nearly as bad of a result as losing to vcu. that shit shouldnt matter to any of the kids playing anyways, if any team goes into a game thinking theyre going to lose because of the name on the front of the other kids’ jerseys theyre fucked in the first place.
March 21st, 2008 at 1:56 am
and as far as duke’s recruiting. they have gotten incredibly unlucky in that both of their last big time recruits at center have been total busts. remember boateng? didnt think so, hes busy sucking ass for arizona state. gooback is pretty useless as well. if either one of them had been a serviceable ten and ten guy this team is miles different. coupled with the fact that mcroberts absolutely quit on the team, they could be a hell of a lot worse off right now
March 21st, 2008 at 8:11 am
people are comparing OJ mayo to SEbastian Telfair. wow what world do you people live on? OJ Mayo is going to be a legit stud in the NBA, not some scrub who gets passed around by bad teams
you guys lost your minds comparing OJ Mayo to Sebastian Telfair
March 21st, 2008 at 8:28 am
If a player in the hood is great and can deal with almost Duke level academics, Coach K will recruit him. Remember William Avery? Coach K does, thus he shies away from players that can’t do the work. That’s why Michael Thompson transfered…he was a fucking moron (and flopped on the court). I’m not saying that Duke basketball players don’t get special treatment academically (Because all athletes do), but they need to at least be able to read and write, something 75% of the top 100 recruits can’t be bothered to do. Fucking AAU.
