It’s Halftime Baaaaby!
College Basketball, Cross Dressing March 22nd. 2008, 2:17pm
Finally, we can pay the proper respect to Day 3 of the tournament as we are at halftime of the Dukies/West Virginia game. Interesting dichotemy with the villainous Bob Huggins opposing holier than thou Michael Krzyzewski. Joe Alexander leads all with 11 points on 5/12 shooting. Greg Paulus and Joe Scheyer each have 8 points for the Blue Devils and Duke has a 34-29 lead at halftime.
So how about that Friday?Â
Vanderbilt lost to a color, Clemson lost after leading by 18 to Villanova, Davidson took down Gonzaga, UCONN lost to San Diego and Western Kentucky held off Drake in overtime. As noted by the JoeSportsFan team of Josh Bacott and Matt Sebek (those guys rule), the 4 major upsets all occurred in Tampa, causing Villanova coach Jay Wright to name Good Friday “Tampa Turmoil”. Jay, it’s probably best if we stick to coaching and being beautiful.
Save some handsome for the rest of us, though.

Such a devious photo of coach K. A WVU comeback would burst some more brackets, right?
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:24 pm
The picture freaking kills me. I love it…

I’m such an idiot for picking West Virginia to go so far. I hate Bob Huggins. I hate watching his teams. I hate the “very blatantly go for contact on every shot” style of offense. I hate that Duke is having an off game and still cruising.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:24 pm
I hear ya. But if Duke loses, why even bother playing the rest of the West bracket?
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:27 pm
They don’t need to play it anyway, no team in there is beating UCLA
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:28 pm
I hate the “very blatantly go for contact on every shot†style of offense
Also known as Coach Calhoun’s UCONN offense.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm
I thought Calhoun’s offense was “miss 75% of our layups”? Yep, I’m still bitter.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm
god help wvu if duke can hit a goddamn three
love the announcers openly pulling for wvu, which is impossible because the media LOVES duke
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Is there anyone who wasn’t hurt by UConn losing yesterday?
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:34 pm
It’s not about my brackets Hawkeye, it’s about the $6500 suicide pool I got knocked out of (along with 28 other people).
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Hmmmmm……I’d have to begin drinking heavily after that one then.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:37 pm
What’s with Coach K having a 104 degree temp Thursday? Don’t you have to be in the frickin hospital with a temp that high? I’m waiting for them to tell me that Coach K had rabid muskrats in his pants the whole game as well.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:39 pm
traditional excellent use of the bench keeping singler in there with three fouls. way to go K you overrated bastard
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:39 pm
I can’t be the only one that had San Diego…?
Alexander has made Singler his bitch.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:40 pm
I hope WVU wins. I picked Duke to the West Finals. But you do realize that this is the same Bob Huggins that has shit the bed in virtually every NCAA Tournament this side of 1992?
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Anyone else see Alexander talking shit to people when he blocks them? I love this guy even more now!
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:44 pm
The goofy thing about this WVU team is that it’s not made up of the typical Huggins players… namely, big bruising goons and Iverson-type guards. Huggy Bear of course, rams his system (which hasn’t won him a damn thing, mind you) down their throats instead of playing to their strengths.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Alexander is playing like a man possessed right now.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Now, they’re not that “USC Football Dynasty” that has won exactly one uncontested national championship in the last 35 years, but Duke is close.
Another TV timeout 10 seconds after a full timeout. FRICK
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:46 pm
there are how many freshmen on this team? one? give it four years and the program will be in the tank
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:46 pm
I can assure you I did just that. Barely remember the IU game, not that I really want to remember that shit.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:47 pm
yeah because all those teams that have won more than three titles in the past 18 years, the fucking list is exhaustive!
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Showing how little attention I paid last night….Did IU win or lose?
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Alexander is a chucker today. Science
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:51 pm
dukes shot selection is terrible. your threes arent falling so you jack up nba distance threes, brilliant. maybe if anyone except henderson worked out in the offseason they could hit those
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Got worked by Arkansas, half of them didn’t even look like they wanted to be playing. I felt bad for DJ White.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:53 pm
UConn, Kentucky, Florida and UNC have won 2 each in the last 15 years Duke has not. Statistics can tell any story you want them to tell.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:53 pm
moleman: Why does Coach K only recruit guys from middle to high class neighborhoods? Wouldn’t Duke be better off getting some guys who are obviously better athletes from lower class neighborhoods?
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:55 pm
theyd be better off if he recruited people who could rebound regardless of socioeconomic status
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Any time you limit your supply of talent, you’ll be worse off.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Has Duke ever had a player with a neck tatoo or cornrows?
P.S. There might be a fight by the end of this game. Nice shoulder block by Thomas.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Actually hedged – Duke to win, but WVU +4
But i unless Duke can actually make a few 3’s this half … no shot.
Duke fans are probably wishing they had recruited Joe Alexander. With the Duke PR machine behind that kid, you’d think he was Danny Ferry, reincarnated.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:59 pm
wow good foul thomas. what the fuck.
i love nelson and have enjoyed watching him the past four years, but more than anything i will remember him for his ineptitude at the line.
i think its pretty difficult to be a true ‘dynasty’ in college ball. the closest we have had recently is florida and look where they are now. if you had to stay three seasons like football that would be a different story, but the way the system is its almost impossible to stay one of the top three teams year in year out. duke has had a down two seasons but if you honestly are trying to say that since they came to prominence they havent been one of the elite few schools in the nation youre fooling yourself.

*Random Subject Change*
Brittany Spears may be well used (and bag-lady crazy), but she still is a cutie.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:01 pm
did anyone recruit alexander? i thought he went to military school after high school
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Duke should only get the ball to Henderson and let him go to work. He can take anyone on WVU off the dribble. Nobody else is doing jack.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:05 pm
assuming they lose this game, which the current ability to jack shit almost guarantees, its not like they have a ton coming in next year. czyz is a middle of the road power foward and they have no center coming in. williams is one of the best shooters in the country but they are deep at guard as is. going to be a team very similar to this, dependent on the three ball with no big man.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:08 pm
0-13 from three-point land?! Guess Coach K will be spending time planning for the olympics.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Damn…they’re still winning. I’ve been watching the race. Anyone have Duke beating UCLA?
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
i actually think theres a good bit of legitimacy to the argument that him coaching the national team hurts duke. not as much as not getting a real center though.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:14 pm
SHIT. Duke calls timeout in the TV timeout window. commercials between 5 seconds of action coming up…
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:14 pm
And there we go.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:17 pm
You have to have a legitimate big man to go deep in the tourney. Whether its a shot blocker, scorer, or rebounder. That is a must. Duke can’t play inside out to get good 3’s, so they are inconsistant.
UCLA, UNC, Kansas, Memphis, Miss state, Georgetown….all have legitimate back to the basket big men.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Allow me to be the first.
Duke = Frauds!!!!!
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Well, this one’s over. Thanks for coming out, Duke.
When was the last time this team reached the Final Four?
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:23 pm
i know i rag on him for his recruiting but in reality the last two centers he has brought in have been high school all americans. boateng was a bust and transfered, and zoubek is definitely a bust. as much as i hate to say it they miss mcroberts
i really didnt expect a title but a second straight opening weekend exit is tough to take.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm
So let’s see. WVU could make their third Sweet 16 in 4 years in basketball. Their football team has won 2 BCS teams in 3 years. Both were inches away from making the Final Four and the BCS Championship Game.
Good thing their coaches bolted for Michigan becuse they wanted to contend for national championships.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:25 pm
2004
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Up next: K-State vs. Wisconsin. Any guesses on how painful that game will be?
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Paulus should have played football.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:27 pm
anyone got a link to the distribution maps? not sure which game im getting
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:29 pm
well nice career nelson, you will be missed for your defense and leadership. in the end scheyer and henderson were the only ones that showed a goddamn thing today. in my heart of hearts i believe smith should play over paulus next year but that wont happen so we can look forward to lots of terrible turnovers and flopping from him for one more year.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Light up those couches!!!
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:31 pm
I haven’t seen the maps. I’m guessing more people will get Beasley.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:32 pm
paulus has one assist today? HES SUCH A GREAT PASSER!
lawson may be a thug but him and nolan smith played together in high school, theres nothing to say K couldnt recruit a real fucking point guard from one of those schools.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Paulus should have played “not suck.”
Fixed.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:33 pm
im wanting to kstate game but i live in PA so im guessing once xavier comes on we will get that
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:35 pm
I’d guess that Indiana (or Illinois) to Pennsylvania down to Kentucky will be getting Purdue/Xavier, and that’s about it.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:36 pm
so lets see, what everyone knew about duke this year
1. suspect from the line
2. cant rebound
3. die by the three
in the end, not shocking what happened. good for west virginia, theyve got a great shot at the elite eight this year. if for anything other than to make beilein look like an asshole, heres hoping they pull it off
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Wisconsin’s playing to a 60-plus point pace. Hello.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:37 pm
OMG ESPN’S HEADLINE IS ‘TWO AND THROUGH’ THEY ARE SUUUUCH FANS OF THE NUMBER TWO
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:38 pm
is there any other school in the country who’s basketball and football styles are more similar than wisconsin? theyre not flashy, noone talks about them, they dont score much, and all of a sudden theyre in the top ten.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Coach K won’t recruit players with neck tatoos and/or corn rows.
Someone answer the question as to why he won’t??

I can’t believe I’m defending a school/fanbase that hired Bob Huggins and threatened criminal behavior on their former coach, but I know what it’s like to have Michigan try to steal your coaches “because they’re Michigan.”
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:40 pm
brain child, did you see lance thomas when he was in high school?
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm
just to end the discussion, he does recruit people with corn rows
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Hey dumb fuck name the last significant Duke layer to have corn rows while at Duke.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Coach K doesn’t care about black people.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Damn, that’s even less coverage than I thought Purdue/Xavier was getting, and I already thought they would get next to nothing.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:47 pm
you said he doesnt recruit players with cornrows. he recruited lance thomas two years ago and thomas had corn rows. what you said was wrong.
if you had said ‘k doesnt have players playing for him that have cornrows’ you would be right. i dont know if he has some gay ass rule against that or what. i cant think of any player that has had them, the closest would probably be battiers klingon ridges
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:49 pm
OMG ESPN’S HEADLINE IS ‘TWO AND THROUGH’ THEY ARE SUUUUCH FANS OF THE NUMBER TWO
Moleman, I swear it’s not personal. It’s just that this team hasn’t made it through the first weekend in two years. The Sweet Sixteen in four. One Final Four in seven. And yet, next year, 28 of their games will be nationally televised–most of them on ESPN.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:50 pm
@jay – I know. Must be the draw of Beasley and the huge Wisconsin fan base.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:52 pm
because people watch them. that doesnt mean espn people are duke fans, theyre in the business of making money. they make money from people watching games. are kansas and ucla better teams than duke and recently deserved of more attention? absolutely. but dukes fans base is bigger, for better or for worse. almost everyone on espn seems to hate the yankees (rightfully so) but again they get all the headlines because thats what generates traffic is the biggest fan base. trust me i understand the hatred i just think its a bit misplaced.
also fwiw if shaun livingston hadnt bailed on duke the whole ‘only clean cut looking black guys’ thing wouldve been shot to shit
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:58 pm
If ESPN aired two dozen Purdue games a year every year, Purdue would have a fan base that rivals Duke’s. It’s not just “they’re on TV all the time because everybody likes them,” it’s part “I like them because they’re on TV all the time.”
And I know that Duke haters are a big reason why they’re on TV all the time. I wish more people got that. But that’s why I watched Lost on Thursday and NASCAR today (I flipped to the Duke game during cautions and commercials)
March 22nd, 2008 at 4:02 pm
eh ill buy that a lot of duke fans are only fans because they were one of the huge programs in the past twenty years when a lot of these people were growing up. but i dont think thats any different than kansas, uconn, carolina, and (lol) florida fans.
for the homegrown duke fans like myself espn is not much of a factor, every carolina duke game is preempted by raycom sports. as is the acc tournament, all weekend games, etc.
March 22nd, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Purdue up 7 early.
If they win, UCLA’s road would be at best 16-9-12-6, at worst 16-9-13-7.
One last comment about Duke and TV. I used to tolerate it more, but in recent years, even their games against Albany, Valparaiso, and UNC-Greensboro are on TV. I’m not saying get rid of them. I’m just saying cut it from like 28 to 21, and give a few other schools a chance to play on TV, and people wouldn’t complain so much. And I don’t think ESPN would lose millions of dollars if it happened.
March 22nd, 2008 at 4:16 pm
thats fine by me
March 22nd, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Just saw the rebounding numbers from the Duke game, 45-20 for West Virginia. That is ridiculous.
