Your Saturday Night Tourney Thread
College Basketball March 22nd. 2008, 5:30pmI’m out for a short while, folks – be back in the morning. Enjoy the rest of the games. We still got 5 of them left. I like college basketball.Â

ps: Duke lost on purpose because Coach K is scheduled to resurrect tomorrow.

As for the Coach K and no corn row players on his teams I once read in USA Today that Tennessee’s Pat Summit won’t allow her players to have a bush. True story.
March 22nd, 2008 at 5:56 pm
So far have 2 of 4 in a parlay (low money to win decent), but not sure if Xavier -3 will come through here.
March 22nd, 2008 at 5:56 pm
But i certainly like WVU to beat either of these teams
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Great find on the Parade cover. Woo boy, that’s tough.
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:16 pm
I was absolutely stunned that UNLV was 13.5 point underdogs to KU. Just thought I’d throw that out there.
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Does anybody else think that Purdue coach Matt Painter looks just like Shane McMahon?
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:24 pm
No chance, that’s what you got.
/Mr McMahon to schnitzengiggles
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:29 pm
I was just going to say… Purdue/Xavier seems to be a battle of which coach looks more like Shane-O-Mac.
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Xaiver really needs to work in an inbounds play before playing WVU. Have you seen a longer ending to a game? Who was working the clock, the ghost of Ray Charles?
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Stanford coach is a wizard! Got kicked out for arguing a foul!
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Trent Johnson got ejected? Anyone see what the heck happened?
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:38 pm
He got T’d up for agruing a foul, and then during the time out, came out on the floor to argue some more and the refs tossed him
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:41 pm
CBS is seriously dropping the ball here. Two games are at the half, and No. 1 seed Kansas is playing and we HALFTIME UPDATES? Yeah, the Trent Johnson thing is significant, but we could have seen that during a break in the action later in the game.
That’s weak, CBS.
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Thanks for a great season Boilers. Can’t wait for next year!
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:43 pm
I can’t tell who’s a bigger moron, Trent Johnson or whoever’s running the show at CBS.
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Jay Bilas, excellent use of the telestrator by circling the assistant coach bury his head in his hands when Trent got the gate. That was hilarious.
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:52 pm
I think you mean the Bilastrator, not the telestrator.
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:04 pm
WSU looks fantastic up 16. There’s 16:06 left, but ND had to call a TO, Brey couldnt wait for the under 16 TO
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Bilas has to do something to stop himself from crying on air.
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:17 pm
College basketball is basically a business, especially the elite programs. So just for the record if I was a coach I would allow my players to have corn rows. If I was a business owner I would not won’t my employees to have them. Unless of course my business was selling Fubu coats.
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:24 pm
I thought that debate ended 4 hours ago.
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:26 pm
How about the Big East going 8-1 so far? Best conference in the country, by far.
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Wazzu’s defense is doing a number to Notre Dame, they could give Carolina some trouble in the Sweet 16
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:50 pm
come on marquette…at least get me 1 of these second rounders haha
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Choke city for Sideshow Bob
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:54 pm
my cbs went blank at the end of Stanford, wow, i was pissed
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:59 pm
OnterrioSmith, one minute left, Marquette up by one.
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:00 pm
thanks, it came back
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:01 pm
McNeal is something special
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:04 pm
THAT is why Sideshow Bob will always be the second tier cousin. Brooke always gets it done.
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:05 pm
cousin = not worthy of being mentioned as his twin brother
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Both Lopez’s were great today, but Brook was UUUUUGE as Al Michaels would say
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:08 pm
I’m sure glad CBS kept cutting back to the Kansas game so I could watch them shoot free throws. I definitely did not want to watch the last minute of the Stanford game uninterrupted.
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Fantastic game… Trent Johnson is off the hook.
Are McNeal, James and Hayward all back next year? If so, Marquette will be badass next year.
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:09 pm
you gotta lick twins named Robin and Brook, it’s like the parents knew they were having twins, didn’t want to know the sex and picked names they’d keep no matter what the sex ended up being
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:09 pm
uhh lick = like
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:10 pm
16 assists!
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:16 pm
I think they went with the girls names anyways
@Douggotliebbush-Enough already on the corn row thing. Jesus Christ.
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Pitt/MSU is Gus Johnson’s last chance this weekend… lets hope for a good one.
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:10 pm
oh man the penguins just absolutely face raped the devils. 7-1, 5 in the third period. chased brodeur out of the net AGAIN. how anyone can suggest he is an mvp canidate when his win percentage in the division is under 400 is absurd.
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Worst player I’ve seen today: Ibok of MSU. Stonehands. Gus even said, “his teammates are really getting frustrated with him.”
MSU up 2 at the break, and that’s with zip from Morgan, who got two quick ones.
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:17 pm
agreed.. best player Brook Lopez
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:21 pm
about the commercials during the tourney: Modern English was it necessary to completely sell out Met With You to EVERYONE who wanted to use it in an ad? and Cuba Gooding, was it your agent that said doing underwear ads with Michael Jordan was a good idea?
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
I’m guessing that Cuba just wanted some money. Better than being on the corner, giving hand-jobs for crack.
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Hanes Ads > Snow Dogs >>> Boat Trip
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Don’t forget Rate Race!
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Onterrio,
I’M WEARING YOUR UNDERWEAR
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Urg
Rat Race, even
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:45 pm
This Suton kid is nice. MSU was just up 10, and the key, i think, is Raymar Morgan locking down FIelds. Missed that in the first half due to fouls, but i don’t think Fields has taken a shot 4 mins in.
Re: Lopez – yes he was a beast in the 2nd half, but he’s a 7-footer going against smaller, unheralded Marquette big man. Still doesn’t diminish the accomplishment … but im curious to see him against someone his size, like a Roy Hibbert or something.
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Jerry McGuire to this? Who woulda guessed?
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:50 pm
TBL: it ain’t Kevin Love he better wake up or UCLA is going home (thats the game they are showing me right now)
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:51 pm
UCLA down 8. Who’s watching? Eternity left, but curious how bad the Bruins look. I’d say 90% of the folks in the bracket challenge have UCLA in the FF or the finals.
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:52 pm
OS – It’s 10 now? We need updates. Too invested in MSU to watch on MMOD.
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:53 pm
a&m by 8.. they are much better than i thought, tremendous size
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Collison for 3… a&m by 5.. kinda wish they’d switch to Pitt/MSU
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Pitt just took the lead briefly, but if MSU can survive with a freshman point guard, a few big stiffs inside, and Neitzel getting hounded … that’ll be awesome.
Suton has 14, and Young is carrying Pitt (when Blair isn’t). Sparty needs to quit putting freshman on Fields. He’s abusing them.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:04 pm
Fields is one tough 5-10 dude, exactly the kinda guy you dont wanna face in the tourney
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Why does Kevin Love think he’s a 3 point shooter?
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:07 pm
he’s a nice shooter, but he is way too far away from the basket, they have to change up quick
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:08 pm
A&M 42, UCLA 36 with 11min left
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Josh Shipp has only taken 4 shots.. FOUR he has to step up
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Westbrook and shipp have a combined ZERO points
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:19 pm
a&m 44 ucla 38 still wish they’d switch to pitt/msu
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:20 pm
There goes Pittsburgh.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
PIT is done.
Switch to the UCLA game!
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Kevin Love just had back to back blocks and then they fouled him… nice
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Damnit, that’s what I get for listening to Bob Knight!!!!
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:22 pm
44-42 a&m
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:23 pm
Love has 3 blocks on the last 2 A&M possessions
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Finally!
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:25 pm
44-43 A&M, 5min to go
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:27 pm
will the winner score 50?
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Say goodnight, Pittsburgh.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:32 pm
tied at 45 2:45 to go
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:33 pm
I can kiss my Jon Scheyer bobblehead goodbye.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:35 pm
47-45 Kevin Love with the turn around
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:36 pm
i had Pitt over MSU but then losing to Memphis
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:38 pm
I just don’t see how any could not put Kevin Love in the top 10 of this years NBA draft.
To me, he’s your ideal PF. He’ll get you 10-10 and defense and blocks.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:39 pm
i think Dick Enberg got Gus Johnson bracket
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:39 pm
A&M must go for the win here.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:40 pm
As someone who needs UCLA to win by 11, yeah, I’m rooting for OT.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:41 pm
i really like Love, but i am on the west coast so i see him a lot, he’s the kinds guy you need
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:41 pm
/phew
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:42 pm
wow, UCLA can really play defense, my champ pick is still alive
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:42 pm
And my bracket is safe for another day….
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Talk about a bullshit non-call there … only one replay? Gimmie a break.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:44 pm
TBL was that your 11 point spread talking or the sensible sports fan talking?
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Wow what a finish….the “emphatic” dunk at the end of the game give me chills up my spine and im not even a UCLA fan
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Is it fair to say UCLA has a clear road to the final four now.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:48 pm
nothing is clear Xavier is tough
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:48 pm
I’m not a UCLA fan, either, and the only thing more exciting than that finish (for me, anyways) is if this Miguel Cabrera signing is true.

March 22nd, 2008 at 10:50 pm
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:50 pm
and yes that second half wasn’t supposed to be a quote. I’m a retard.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:51 pm
ton of money to a guy who is 2 tacos short of 275
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Everybody and their mama picked Pitt.
but seriously haven’t people realized that a
Tom Izzo team never fails in the tournament.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Tom to the Izzo is a great tourney coach, only problem is i realize that AFTER the tourney starts
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Better to have locked up Cabrera (hopefully) after trading for him even though he’s FAT than the $140 million the Tigers tried to give Juan Gonzalez all those years ago.
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:00 pm
wow, that was a close one for the the Tigers, will Juan Gone make the Cardinals roster?
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:07 pm
I’ve lost track of Juan Gone after he had 1 AB for the Indians and was out the rest of the season in ‘05.
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Juan Gone was hitting .308 this spring, but he’s been sidelined with with an abdominal strain the past 10 days.
In other news, water is wet.
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:18 pm
weird for Juan to be out with some sort of muscle strain…
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:20 pm
I remember he begged the Tigers to bring the fences in years back (I don’t think they obliged). Too bad he kept getting hurt, even though he was on steroids (my opinion).
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:21 pm
He’ll probably spend his rehab time looking for someone else to marry.
There’s no way the national game tomorrow for CBS is Siena-Villanova….right?
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Gonzo i think at some point they did bring them in
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Rangers owner Tom Hicks said his biggest front office blunder was signing Juan G to a fatty contract “after he came off steroids”. So, uh…..
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:34 pm
remember when he screamed down the official scorer for not giving him and RBI during a game, calling it an error and no RBI?
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Joel Przybilla has 25 rebounds in an actual NBA game right now.. granted it against the Clippers, but i sorta counts
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Onterrio, I think you are right. they had to though. Those fences were WAY too far.
Patrick, thanks for clearing that up. I recall that as well.
Juan WAS pretty awesome though. I think one season with the Tribe, he had 100 RBIS at the all star break and was on his way to break Hack Wilson’s record of 191, or is it 190. They still haven’t ironed that out.
Via Wikipedia:
Wilson’s 1930 season was one of the best ever by a hitter. In addition to hitting 56 home runs, leading the league with 105 walks, and boasting a batting average of .356, he drove in 191 runs, a mark that remains one of the most untouchable MLB records. (For years, record books gave the total as 190, until research in 1999 showed that an RBI credited by an official scorer to Charlie Grimm actually belonged to Wilson.) He recorded that total without hitting a grand slam.
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:02 am
1999 must’ve been the season he stared down the official scorer since he was counting every RBI.. wait Gonzo you aren’t him, are you?
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:07 am
I’m the official scorer. Why do you think the Indians give up a lot of unearned runs every year? Yep, because of me.
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:10 am
no Gonzo = Juan Gone???
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:17 am
Haha. Now I get it. Nah not Juan Gone. Although he was great on my Strat team years back.
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:19 am
Check out these pics. Not complaining though. I have UCLA winning it all
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:24 am
Jay, awesome find. I guess the refs couldnt decide which guy to give the foul to. So they said, fuck it. Clean block.
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:36 am
wow, i guess the refs owe one to A&M
that probably doesn’t help
UCLA stole wins vs Stanford and Cal 2 weeks ago via the refs, they are the charmed team
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:39 am
holy fuck…after seeing those pictures if I were a A&M fan I owuld be pretty damn bitter.
