Ballin’: Lakers vs. Warriors = NBA Gold
NBA March 25th. 2008, 9:43am
Los Angeles Lakers 121, Golden State 117, OT: The Lakers blew a nine-point lead late in the fourth, and then got a lucky call in the waning seconds that helped them salvage a split in the back-to-back home and home. Leading by two with four seconds left, the Warriors were inbounding the ball and the ref called Monta Ellis for an offensive foul. Weak. Lamar Odom had 23 points, 21 rebounds and five blocks; Baron Davis had 30 and Stephen Jackson pumped in 29. All three played the entire 53 minutes.
Detroit 110, OT, Phoenix 105: Mr. Big Shot scored nine points in overtime as the Pistons – playing without Rip Hamilton – snapped the Suns 7-game winning streak. Amare had 33, but Phoenix fell 1.5 games behind the Lakers, who won. Teams we’re rooting for to win the West: 1) Phoenix, 2) Golden State, 3) Denver.
Philadelphia 95, Boston 90: The Celtics have lost two in a row, which means it has to be the chemistry. Iggy had 28 points (including this nice jam) and amazingly, the 76ers are now the 6th seed in the East, which would pit them against Orlando in the first round. Philly’s 1-2 against the Magic (currently 3rd) this year, but actually could surge as high as fifth in the East, seeing as they are just one game behind the Wiz.
Denver 120, Memphis 106: JR Smith pumped in 29 points off the bench, and helped lighten the load of Melo (23) and AI (26). Neat Smith story: While researching a potential book on him several years ago, we attended his State Championship game during his senior year. The opposing team was led by Joakim Noah. Smith – who was a dazzling dunking machine back then – got two technicals and was tossed, and Noah was incredibly dominant in leading his team to victory. Pretty intense game.
Houston 108, Sacramento 100: Here’s how tight the West is – according to the AP, the Rockets entered the night fifth in the conference, but just one game back of first. With the victory, they leapfrogged Phoenix and San Antonio, and are now in third.

lakers warriors…fuckin gorgeous game. entertaining as hell and those uniform combinations were just pristine. gotta love the aesthetics.
March 25th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Odom had 23 and 21 with 5 dimes & blocks on 10-15 shooting, but I got the sense that he didn’t have the fans’ trust. At least those numbers still count even sans the trust!
March 25th, 2008 at 9:51 am
Well he’s got to put up those #’s with Gasol and Bynum out
March 25th, 2008 at 9:52 am
thank god for NBA. im going to be lost on this site when its over because i cant stand to watch MLB until the playoffs start.
Spurs come to Orlando tonight. Going to be a test for the Magic and i cant wait to see how we perform against one of the top teams in the west.
March 25th, 2008 at 9:52 am
Rafer Alston … there are no words. First time I’ve ever been comfortable with him shooting the basketball. Ever.
March 25th, 2008 at 9:54 am
It’s not a “big shot” if it’s a charge. Mr. Big Shot got bailed out by the refs who took control of the game in OT. Good game though.
March 25th, 2008 at 9:54 am
irish…i wouldnt be surprised to see the magic win. bowen isnt effective against guys who spot up and shoot, he needs guys to drive so he can use his massive bag of dirty tricks. anxious to see dwight vs. duncan.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:01 am
Hate to say it Spence, but those aesthetics you speak of are probably the reason I can’t fully embrace LeBron. Watching a Cavs game, with those heinous uniforms in that dark arena, is just awful. Even with the most exciting player in the game, I tend to change the channel and watch golf or something.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:02 am
Would Bowen cover Hedo? Would they put him on Rashard (when healthy)?
March 25th, 2008 at 10:06 am
@spence: how’d your team do in the first game of the season?
March 25th, 2008 at 10:06 am
Odom puts up great numbers but sometimes he just has mental lapses on the court. He missed a free throw that would have put the Lkers up three in regulation. Threw a pass to Baron Davis and had a lane violation on the first of two free throws. He is a pretty good player with loads of talent sometimes the lights just go off upstairs.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:07 am
I’d say equally weak was the terrible charge on Kobe with 2 minutes left in OT, and I don’t know, maybe you guys missed the LANE VIOLATION they called with 2 minutes to go in OT. It was legit – but a lane violation?! IN OT – one the first of two free throws where no rebound is possible?
Nick P, Odom is ballin. But I’m pretty sure not one Laker fan in the world was suprised he split the pair with the game on the line. I can’t believe the Lakers win any games in the West with the lineup of Turiaf, Sasha V, Walton, Kobe and Lamar (that lineup finished the 4th). D Fish also can’t guard anyone.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:07 am
JR Smith isnt that good. He is a prime reason, along with Telfair, on why kids need to go to college for at least a year. JR Smith will be passed around this league more than groupie #$%@# on the bus. Do you think if his parents were well off that he still would of went pro? no
Kids like him ruin it for the future Kobe’s, Lebrons, T Macs, Amare, and Dwight who went from high school to the pros successfully
March 25th, 2008 at 10:08 am
charge was in regulation..sorry.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:08 am
Hope to god Denver makes the playoffs, just for the possibility of a 300-point game happening.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:08 am
Should Alston be tested for HGH? Clearly, he’s on something. Kid is out of his mind the last three months.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Odom is a 68% FT shooter. That’s his true talent level; he’ll split a lot of pairs.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:12 am
I want no part of Rafer alston running my team in the playoffs.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:13 am
I thought Phil would have put Vlad back in in the 4th last night he played alot better than Walton.
You are right about that lineup too CC the Warriors pretty much doubled and trippled Kobe all night in that zone defense they were playing. That line up just doesnt scare anyone.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:13 am
Pistons played withoutRip Hamilton.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:15 am
Amare now better then Sheed at getting Tee’d up
March 25th, 2008 at 10:16 am
That T was bullshit too. Were the refs trying to exert their dominance early? He didn’t do anything except look at the ref.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:17 am
jb49ers – Kobe was missing his shots too, making it a really bad scoring lineup. The have to hope guys are hitting threes to win like that – fortunately for them, Sasha connected on one when it counted, as did D-Fish. I can’t believe how many turnovers they committed – Sasha V cannot handled the ball and make decisions, nor can Turiaf.
The Lakers bench and supporting cast of alleged worldbeaters look rather pedestrian on many a night.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Actually Kobe leads the league in T’s this year, just demonstrating another area of dominance! (although Phil said he’s gotten the majority of those sticking up for his teammates).
March 25th, 2008 at 10:18 am
yea I know. There were a lot of horrible calls in that game.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:20 am
How close is he to a 1 game suspension?
March 25th, 2008 at 10:20 am
@cursed- are you a laker fan or a cav fan? i can never tell with you
March 25th, 2008 at 10:20 am
Thank God for Lamar Odom for being so clutch for the Lakers, since Kobe’s not being clutch since Shaq left the Lakers.
And thank Odom for proving that our lack of trust in you at the crunch time, was unfounded since you did it ONCE, and ONCE is the rule not the exception of the rule.
Lamar Odom for MVP!
March 25th, 2008 at 10:20 am
Lakers won the game in a tough arena to play in but they didnt look good doing it. Shot way too many threes didnt attack the middle of the zone until the second half. Odom did a good job of getting to the rim though. Kobe settled for too many outside shots.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Im rooting for the Lakers to get the number one seed. So we can all see another first round upset by the Warriors
March 25th, 2008 at 10:22 am
I’m a Cavalier fan who personally likes Kobe better than Lebron. (I went to more of LeBron’s high school games than anyone on here by the way, probably in the range of 20-25). I liked LeBron much more back then…
March 25th, 2008 at 10:22 am
@Nick, they’re not running stories about it yet, so he’s not that close.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Irish I’m rooting for the Magic tonite, I hate the Spurs especially that clown Bowen. Dwight Howard 30 pts 15 rebs and 3 blks
March 25th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Lamar does suck, actually. He is one of 15 guys in the entire Association to average a double-double, all while shooting a rather pedestrian 52% from the floor. Cut his ass.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:24 am
As of Februrary 9th, Kobe had 11 t’s.. 4 more left. Not sure if he’s gotten any since.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Warriors might end up with the 7th seed. Nuggets willbe the 8th seed and well Dallas is getting ready for summer vacation.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:25 am
I really don’t understand why people still don’t trust JR Smith after he score 29 points in 21 minutes. At least those numbers still count even sans the trust!
March 25th, 2008 at 10:25 am
I pesonally don’t think Lamar sucks, but like I’ve said all along, his gigantic salary and his penchant to implode towards the end of games (and his lack of a midrange game) make him destined for another blockbuster trade next season. Interesting to see who the Lakers would get for him.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Feb 9th was almost two months ago, cursed.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Hef…Man Ram tore it up, Papi, Ortiz, Ellsbury did jack. Eric Chavez didn’t play. Papelboner started me off with a lovely 9.00 ERA cuz of his one run given up.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Current quote from ESPN Daily Dime. Man once the Suns get Marion back they will be unstoppable.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:30 am
@jb49-it would be nice for Dwight to show up tonight. He is slacking as of lately in my book.
@CH40s- it would be nice to see him put up consistent numbers. I was using him as an example of how kids like him ruin it for future pros.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Lamar doesn’t suck! He’s a great rebounder and has a lot of talent, unfortunately every person that actually sees his games, have a lot of stories about his mental mistakes. He takes a lot of 3 pointers in bad situations, he doesn’t make FT’s on the end of games and he mades a lot of bad passes in the last minutes also.
But that doesn’t mean that he’s not a good player, he’s not God so he’s not perfect.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Hef, appreciate the calendar help (anyone know when July 4th is this year?). I just wasn’t sure if Kobe had any T’s since then, hence me asking if Kobe had any T’s since then.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Steve Nash, Raja Bell, Shawn Marion, Amare and Shaq thats kinda like a N.Y. Yankees line up
March 25th, 2008 at 10:31 am
@irish, i was being sarcastic.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Oh and I’m a jackass.. I meant February 29th!!
March 25th, 2008 at 10:34 am
Mamba has 13.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:35 am
@cursed, i think he has 13 technical fouls right now.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:39 am
Kobe’s bitching is pretty ridiculous. He literally does complain after every missed shot. But hey, works for Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker
March 25th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Joey Crawford would not agree with that cursed
March 25th, 2008 at 10:42 am
I said that exact same thing two weeks ago. Today? I may be singing a different tune. And as the leader of the “I hate Rafer” bandwagon over the last two years, that is crazy-talk, I know!
March 25th, 2008 at 10:46 am
Nick P wouldn’t agree grungedave! Allston’s stats are pretty similar to last season (worse three point%, better shooting perecentage…same assists, same turnovers). Yet find me someone in Houston who doesn’t think Skip is playing very well.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:46 am
Maybe Lebron needs to follow Duncan’s lead. He whines but not to the extent he could, considering the beating & Shaq treatment he gets on a nightly basis.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:46 am
That was a quick turnaround Grunge. You’re not concerned about the playoffs when you need to have some composure every now and again?
March 25th, 2008 at 10:46 am
Ellsbury did Jack in fantasy terms! However he made a ridiculous catch in center field. Here’s to trading Coco Crisp for pitching.
Nuggets-Lakers 1st round playoffs series will be highly entertaining! Kobe may set a single-series scoring record.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:48 am
@nick p- So lebron gets the hack-a-Shaq now LOL. cmon he does it to himself by driving to the rim. Its the only way he can score lol
March 25th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Nick, LeBron is tied with Ricky Davis as the league leader in saying “and one” after a shot – according to Elias, the specific statistic is: everytime
March 25th, 2008 at 10:50 am
He gets hacked, but fouls aren’t called. That’s the problem. If Kevin Martin were making the same moves, he’d get 22 FTs a game.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:52 am
walfredo…yea, that was a pretty pimp catch. unfortunately that’s not a useful statistic in the TBL league.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:52 am
Nick P, every superstar gets hacked. Kobe gets fouled on his jumper literally 20% of the time, Refs can’t call every time…Kobe would average 40 a game.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:53 am
TBL, thanks for posting that video I sent of the Iggy Jam. The Sixers were insane last night. It was all Doc’s fault. When the Celtics were up by 11, he took out ALL the starters. didnt put a starter back in til the lead dwindled to 4. It was too late.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:54 am
I don’t think he was referring to Hack-a-Shaq. He is referring to all the times team hammer Shaq and no foul is called. It happens pretty regularly.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Lebron is second in getting to the line behind Dwight. Dwight shoots about 50% from the line, but Lebron only shoots about 73% from the line.
imagine if both players hit there free throws how that would effect there scoring averages.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Shaq got beat on more than anyone in his prime, but since it didn’t faze him, he didn’t get as many fouls called in his favor. Lebron is the same way.
Look at Kevin Martin play sometime. Breathe on the guy, and a foul is called. Same with D-Wade.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Am I still worried that Alston might go all “Skip” on, say, Deron Williams in May? Yeah.
And while his stats are the same as last year, he’s getting the same total production in fewer minutes. AND in the last couple weeks, he has been our ONLY consistent player. That’s very unlike the 2004-2007 Rafer.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Kevin martin has a little euro in his game. Guy flops fromtime to time. I think LeBron doesn’t get the calls because alot of the time when he drives to the rim he delievers the punishment.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:03 am
jb49ers, i have to disagree. South american players are the floppers (pick one Argentina player of your choice) the European players are soft and they usually avoid any contact so they can’t flop. Of course the exception tothat rule is Tony Parker, who learned from the best of the best, Manu Ginobili.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:10 am
I agree with Manu Ginobli but please dont forget about the great Floppe Divac.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Leandro Barbossa doesn’t flop and he’s from South America.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:15 am
He doesn’t play D either, so it’s a wash.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:15 am
Hedo Turk doesnt flop and he is from Turkey
Sideshow bob, Anderson Varejo is a great example of a south american flopper
March 25th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Nick, it’s only funny because it’s 100% accurate.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:16 am
@Hef, i was saying in general. Ronny Turiaf is european and he’s not soft also…
@jb49ers, shame on me forgetting Vlade Divac…the original one! Oh good times…
March 25th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Vareajao and Manu flop, but both are incredible defenders. Varejao takes a beating drawing legitimate charges.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:22 am
Hate to play the race card but black eruos aren’t soft (Parker and Turiaf), the rest are… and South Americans flop waaay too much but also play mad aggressive. You can see the soccer influence (good and bad) in the South American’s games.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Walfredo doesn’t care about black people.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Kanye Papageorgio is right. Me and “W”.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:28 am
walfredo, the only exception to the “race card” you pulled is Jorge Garbajosa, he’s the only white European player that isn’t soft.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:32 am
was dirk flopping when his knee went out? if he was, that should teach him a lesson.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:32 am
David Stern flops.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Boris Diaw’s pretty soft, and…you know.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:39 am
Good call Hef, but to add another addendum to the rule… Diaw’s French so it doesn’t count. But wait, so are Parker and Turiaf…damn… There are kinks in the argument.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Sasha & AK47 aren’t soft. Kleiza no slouch, either.
Oh yeah, Hef doesn’t care about black people, either.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:46 am
AK cried because he wasn’t playing well last year that qualifies as soft.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Adam Mo cried when his team got eliminated from the NCAAs. He’s not sof…oh wait.
March 25th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Speaking of Adam Mo does he get any burn?
March 25th, 2008 at 11:56 am
isnt he injured still?
March 25th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
My point in mentioning Diaw was to maybe disprove the rule. Perhaps skin color is not equal to toughness.
But Nick’s right. I only care about Jews like me.
March 25th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Watch out for the Wizards, they may suck Irish but they beat your Magic.
March 25th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Lamar Odom’s driving layup with nine seconds remaining in overtime put the Lakers ahead to stay and Kobe Bryant added two free throws to seal a 123-119 win over the Warriors in Oakland. Believe it or not, that was the first time this season that Odom had put the Lakers ahead not ahead to stay, but merely put them ahead in the final two minutes of either the fourth quarter or of an overtime period. (A total of 146 other NBA players have put their teams ahead in those circumstances this season.)
March 25th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
@cbh- the sun shines on a dogs ass every once in awhile. im praying for a first round matchup with the Wizards. They seem to be the perfect team to put a whooping on to start out the playoffs.
also, please look at the Wiz’s record this year against the Magic and who won the division. thats right
March 25th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Please look at the Wizards missing two of their best players most of the year.
How would the Magic fare without Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis? I’m guessing they wouldn’t play .500 without them.
Keep sleeping on the Wiz, how are those Raptors doing that you liked?
Just feisty Irish, been away a few days.
March 25th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
good trip in vegas cbh? how bout g mason ? lol
March 25th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Haha great trip, only Will Thomas showed up in the Mason game, I really think he could be a good role player in the NBA. If I hadn’t been in Vegas would have been more depressed about them losing.
March 25th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Questionable foul calling towards the end ruined what could have been the best game since … the previous night. Screw you, Bob Delaney.
March 25th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
JR Smith isnt that good. He is a prime reason, along with Telfair, on why kids need to go to college for at least a year. JR Smith will be passed around this league more than groupie #$%@# on the bus. Do you think if his parents were well off that he still would of went pro? no
Actually, Smith’s family is well off. His dad – if memory serves – has owned his own company for many years. They have money. His parents are close to him, and they are still married (or were a few years ago). In my limited time spent with him and his family (at games, over the phone), I got the impression NBA folks are the ones who steered him into the league.
I know one former NBA player, who also spent some time in an NBA front office, told Smith’s parents JR would ‘definitely’ be drafted in the first round. Smith, in my dealings with him, was a very nice kid who probably wouldnt have qualified anyway had he gone to UNC.
But I’ve never seen anyone dunk like him at the HS level. (The two best high school performances I’ve ever seen are one ridiculous game from Travis Outlaw at an AAU tournament in Vegas, and a point guard by the name of Max Schafer, who briefly played at Princeton, but put on a display i’ll never forget in winning a county title while playing against kids who wound up at Syracuse and Rutgers. If the school sold tape of the game, I’d buy it).
Smith was doing some sick, sick shit while dunking in HS. Reverse jams, nasty dunk-backs – the kid was an absolute monster.
March 25th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
@TBL- so was Ronnie Fields in high school. Probably the sickest high school dunker out there ever. He played along with KG in high school.
okay i was wrong about his parents having money, but that is rare in those cases.
i was trying to use him as an example of kids who come out early who shouldn’t have. sit back and think where this guy will be in 5 years
he is already on his third team, passed around
March 25th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
@TBl- ronnie fields
