Ballin’: Our MVP Vote Goes to Chris Paul
NBA March 27th. 2008, 9:45am
New Orleans 100, Cleveland 99: CP3 drove into the lane in the waning seconds, watched as three defenders collapsed around him, and then passed back to David West, who calmly sank a 15-footer with less than a second left. Paul had 20 assists, and the Hornets made 11-of-22 three’s to offset a massive rebounding advantage (48-33) for the Cavs, who shot 50 percent from the field. With the Lakers getting drilled at home by Charlotte, the Hornets lead Rockets and Kobe Bryant’s by a game in the Western Conference.
Boston 117, Phoenix 97: We remain confident that the Suns can win in the postseason if they play at a slower pace. They will not reach the Finals if they try to keep up in these run-and-shoot affairs, like last night. They’re forcing tempo and coughing it up (21 turnovers). KG had 30 and Pierce had 27.
Washington 104, Seattle 99: A night after getting drilled in Portland, the Wiz needed a late outburst from former UVa. star Roger Mason – five three’s in the fourth – to put away Kevin Durant (32 points) and the Sonics.
Toronto 89, Detroit 82: No Rip Hamilton, no shot on the road. Our old pal TJ Ford returned to the starting lineup (Calderon came off the bench and played 24 minutes) to inject some life into the listless Raptors, and he came through with 13 points and nine assists.
New Jersey 124, Indiana 117: Late in the season, defense is optional – four Nets scored 20 or more points, led by Josh Boone’s career-high of 26. Mike Dunleavy went for 33 for the Pacers, who are now 2.5 games back of Atlanta (which destroyed Milwaukee) for the 8th spot in the East.

what no Kobe talk? He got ejected last night TBL, cmon now
March 27th, 2008 at 9:53 am
CP-3 Had a great game 4 more to go on the road trip. Disappointed with Kobe and the Lakers had a chance to stay in a first place tie and they lose to the bobcats.
March 27th, 2008 at 9:55 am
If Chris Paul does not get MVP then it is because the media wants to make sure to get Kobe his 1st
March 27th, 2008 at 9:55 am
No mention of the Bulls thrilling defeat at the hands of Philadelphia? They were down all game but Larry and Gooden valiantly tried to keep them in it (1-14 combined, 5 points) but came up just short.
March 27th, 2008 at 9:56 am
CP3 is unbelievable.
bill simmons loves rubbing it in, but so do i…think the bulls would like to have tyson chandler back?
March 27th, 2008 at 9:58 am
YYSA, I think it will come down to who wins the west. But there is a little bit of Kobe love going around this year in the media. Its funny with Kobe cause with most people either they love him or hate him. Seems to be gaining a little middle ground this year though.
March 27th, 2008 at 9:58 am
where the hell was tyson chandler when Lebron drove to the hoop to give them the lead last night towards the end? tyson chandler needs to step up his interior defense
March 27th, 2008 at 10:00 am
@spence: Also, when you stockpile assets for years and years in order to make a run at KG, Pau Gasol, Elton Brand, or Shaq, you gotta pass up that noise and pull the strings on a Larry-Gooden deal. Am I right?
March 27th, 2008 at 10:00 am
irish…that’s the beauty of having Z. tyson was out of the paint because Z was hitting that 15-18 foot jumper all night long.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:00 am
Nick…youre damn right. who wants KG or any other premeir big guy when you can get larry hughes and drew gooden at the same price?
March 27th, 2008 at 10:00 am
@irish: He tried to take a charge. Bad idea. They still won though. Cavs missed too many lay-ups in the first half (Lebron included).
March 27th, 2008 at 10:01 am
CP3 had a 20-1 assist to turnover ratio last night. I would be that is the best (or close to) ever for a single game. If you read the daily dime on ESPN, it seems as if it was Joe Smith’s fault for leaving West wide open for a free throw.
Isn’t Kobe suspended now for a game?
March 27th, 2008 at 10:02 am
CP3 > Lebron
March 27th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Tuna: Any time someone has a game with 0 turnovers, it would be better than 20:1.
/Math nazi
March 27th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Roman…im the biggest homer you’ll find, but it’s hard to disagree with you.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:04 am
if Kobe gets one more T, he is suspended. He had two in 29 seconds last night
March 27th, 2008 at 10:04 am
If Kobe’s suspended now for a game, his next game is against Memphis.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:06 am
@spencer- you are no homer of Lebron if you believe that statement
March 27th, 2008 at 10:06 am
Celts beat the Suns by 20…. yawn….
March 27th, 2008 at 10:06 am
And it’s not only a one-game lead on the Lakers. They’re two-up in the loss column on the Lakers, Spurs, and Rockets. Pretty good for a team the media (except Bill Simmons-gasp) still fails to mention as a West contender.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:07 am
Flipped the Wizards on, saw they were down 13 to the Sonics in the 3rd quarter, cursed them for about 2 minutes, passed out shortly after, glad to hear they won.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:08 am
It was Joe Smith’s fault for leaving David West open! Stay home. Stay home. Stay home….that’s all they were saying coming out of that final timeout. I think I’d take my chances with CP3 trying to get off an off-balance shot over a 6-8, 265 guy than David West shooting a free throw.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:09 am
irish…im still a homer, but CP3 is clearly the MVP this year. i even found myself not really being too pissed whenever the hornets would score last night. there was nothing the cavs couldve done defensively to stop him. not one damn thing.
well, they coulda gone all tonya harding on his knee before the game, but that doesnt count.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:10 am
@Nick – You are right, I do miss Larry Hughes’ 1 assist, 0 turnover 2-14 shooting nights.
Living in Chicago, I love watching my roommates get so mad at Hughes and Gooden.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Tuna: Larry’s the man. Don’t you forget it. Same with Gooden.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:11 am
@walfredo- cake walk huh, too easy
March 27th, 2008 at 10:12 am
Any asshole that doesn’t think the Hornets are legit should shove it…I know that the Media doesn’t really watch these games if thats the case…I was totally convinced of the Hornets after Chandler wrote that blog about Jackson getting traded and how close the team was with each other…the Talent was obvious but its those little insights that…to me…show cohesion. That and the fact the Chris Paul is the best Point Guard in the NBA and to me playing the best basketball in the Association right now.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:13 am
Chris Paul isnt the best point guard in the NBA. Steve Nash and Deron Williams will argue that
March 27th, 2008 at 10:14 am
I’m possibly the biggest Kobe fan that isn’t a Laker fan. Even I think CP3 is the MVP this year. That guy is amazing.
Oh, the Rockets, Lakers AND Spurs are all tied at 49-23. The Western Conference is sick. Saturday’s Rockets/Spurs game is huge.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:14 am
CP3 is having MVP-type year, but no greater than Kobe. Both teams are lottery-bound without them. All things being equal, Kobe gets it for lifetime achievement.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Apparently Paul’s one turnover was a play where Lebron tied him up and there was a jump ball, not even a ‘real’ turnover.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Steve Nash and Deron would be foolish to argue that. CP3 is sick on both ends of the court.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Irish – Rondo is NOT in the discussion for best point guards, but he completely broke Nash’s ankles on a crossover last night. Looking forward to Friday night, as the Celts try to beat Hornets, the ONLY team they haven’t beat this year.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:18 am
How is Byron Scott not COY?
March 27th, 2008 at 10:20 am
Irish…Nash is great…he doesn’t defend…Deron Williams is great too…but what CP3 is doing is Isiahesque…and for the 23 year olds on the board..before Isiah was the worst executive in NBA history..he was the second best PG to ever play (Magic #1)…Isiah was to the Pistons what this guy is to the Hornets…their leader..their best player…their best passer..their best scorer…their best perimeter defender…their heart and their soul…Williams is real good…CP3 will be an all time great.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:21 am
Had this discussion last night, August. It’s not a shock NO is this good. They were crushed by injuries last year. He’ll still probably win it, though.
I’d personally vote for Theus, I think, but that will never happen.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Because Rick Adelman is. Duh.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Steve Nash has been doing this for how long? almost ten
Deron Williams how long? two-three years
Chris Paul? one breakout year so far(this year)
Rajon Rondo? one breakout year so far(this year)
Jameer Nelson? will never be in any category except shitty players category
March 27th, 2008 at 10:29 am
COY is not nearly as clear-cut as MVP. He’s clearly the favorite, I don’t know if I’d go with Scott right now.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:30 am
im not saying that Rondo and PAul are not good, because trust me i think they are great players. But put together a couple of good years
March 27th, 2008 at 10:31 am
If Theus can lead the Hang Time crew to a District Championship, I don’t see how anyone beats him out for Coach of the Year.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:33 am
CP3 was very good last year also Irish. Deron is great too. I’m a big fan of his. I think CP3 and Deron are two of the best young players in the league, and are a great sign of the state of the NBA for the future. Both very well rounded players. I think they are both better than Nash, at least this year. Defense is a big reason why.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Irish–As a Hawks fan that punches himself in the nuts everytime he thinks about how Chris Paul could be on our team, I’d have to say that Paul is better than Nash/D. Williams.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:33 am
So being average for 2-3 like Deron Williams is better than be average for 1 year then amazing like Chris Paul?
March 27th, 2008 at 10:38 am
CP3 and Williams have similar 1st two years…Deron Williams CP3
March 27th, 2008 at 10:38 am
It’s hilarious that Rondo suckered his way into the discussion. I think we’re entering a golden age for PG’s, kind of like PF’s in early this decade…
CP3 is best, but Deron may be able to hold up better over the years because he’s bigger. Either way, Utah and N.O. are lucky mofos… And I’m cool w/ Rondo too….
March 27th, 2008 at 10:40 am
CP3 has been better than Deron every single season so far. Deron was particularly awful his rookie season.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:41 am
@walfredo- that was a sick move though last night put on nash
anyone hear the reason why Garnett and Stoudamire go at it against each other? Stephon Marbury told KG that Amare was a better rookie than him and will be more productive than he ever was
March 27th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Steve Nash doing it for 10 just means he’s on the downside. Chris Paul is better than Nash this year, ergo he should be the rest of Nash’s career.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Ok I screwed that up Royally…
CP3
05 16pt 7.8ast
06 17pt 8.9asst
07 21.5pt 11.3asst
Deron
05 10pt 4.49ast
06 16pt 9.3ast
07 19.28pt 10.39ast
I would say CPS has been pretty good his first two years as well
March 27th, 2008 at 10:43 am
But as with the Kobe/Lebron argument…I would kill to have either on my team
March 27th, 2008 at 10:43 am
cmon guys, what else were we going to debate today
March 27th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Irish – That’s why I love KG (believe it or not even before he was a Celtic). Amare probably will be better, but KG is so damn competetive, plays so damn hard, and cares so much. He’s almost cheesy and cliche but he’s great. He has completely changed the culture of the Celtics.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Roman: The issue isn’t whether or not you’d have guy X or Y on your team. Obviously you would. Rather, it’s if the Hornets were offered Deron for Paul, they would hang up laughing. The Jazz would pull a Paul trade in a heartbeat.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:45 am
@walfredo- KG tanked it last year
/ Glen Taylor
March 27th, 2008 at 10:46 am
Which sucks for the Jazz, considering they foolishly selected Deron over CP3.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Jerry Sloan is no fool
March 27th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Those 07 stats for Paul and Deron are very close. While I’ll agree CP3 has played better this year (the state do show the same), I don’t think either one is miles above the other. They are both great young PG’s. It’s not like Utah and New Orleans are miles apart. They are both right at the top of the West. Neither team needs to trade for the other PG.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:53 am
How come no one ever mentions that David West looks exactly like the dude from Heroes that could walk through walls.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Nick -Both team are happy I’m sure. It’s like do the Nuggets wish they got Wade instead of Melo? Doubt it. Or Raptors wish they got Melo instead of Bosh? Doubt it again. If you are lucky enough to get a great franchise player in the draft, it doesn’t really matter about other players/teams. Even Hakeem over Jordan didn’t turn out all that bad for Houston.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Cleve: Hadn’t thought of that, but he’s a spot-on match. Good shiD.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Amare is great but he willnever be as versatile as KG. Remember KG had to kinda operate as Minnesota’s point guard for a year.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:56 am
While I think CP3 is better…I do think each fits their team better than the other…They could switch and still be good…but I think Williams plays better in Sloan’s two man game and I think Paul thrives on creating on the fly…but I would not pigeon hole them.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Chris Paul and Deron Williams are both great players but they are different players even if they play the same position. Deron Williams is the better shooter, while CP3 is the best playmaker.
I have been saying for 2 months that Chris Paul is the clear MVP but even with that i can’t say that the Jazz were foolish to pick Deron. This is not an exact science, and this is not the case of picking Sam Bowie instead of MJ or picking Kwame Brown instead of Pau Gasol.
March 27th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Does Detroit wish they got Bosh,Melo,D-Wade any other top ten pick instead of Darko?
March 27th, 2008 at 11:01 am
Just for fun, I looked at the 3 head-to-head games this year for CP3 and Deron (Utah has won 2 of 3 so far):
Chris Paul:
13-38 FG
15PPG
28Assists
14Reb
Deron:
25-36 FG
21PPG
28Assists
8Reb
March 27th, 2008 at 11:03 am
jb: It’s a tougher question than you think. Really the only logical alternative on draft day was Carmelo. If they draft Carmelo, do they then trade for Rasheed later that season? Do they win a title in year 1 if they draft anyone over Darko?
In hindsight, I’d take the title over the future, but that’s coming from a Cavs and Bengals fan who has never seen a title. Some may disagree.
March 27th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Of the 3 MVP candidates last night (remember MVP doesn’t mean best basketball player in the world) it went CP3 > LBJ > Kobe.
Granted New Orleans defense was the only one throwing the hard double at the superstar opponent, making James pass the ball 35 feet away from the hoop all night, he essentially only took 12 shots.
March 27th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Good point.
March 27th, 2008 at 11:08 am
@RD- when are you going to realize that Lebron isnt even in the running anymore
March 27th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Nick – Detroit liked Tayshaun too much to take Melo. Denver fans love it cuz Kiki would have taken Darko in a heart-beat. He loves Euros.
RD- There were 4 MVP candidates last night. KG dropped 30 in a 20-point rout of the Suns to push the Celtics to an NBA-best 56-15.
March 27th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Amare Stoudemire has a better chance of winning the MVP than Lebron
March 27th, 2008 at 11:26 am
What does that say about the MVP award?
March 27th, 2008 at 11:27 am
it aint going to Cleveland
March 27th, 2008 at 11:34 am
plus, how can you honestly say that Lebron has been the best player all year? what is it, his scoring average that makes you think he deserves it
look at the Cavs record, that is why Lebron will not win
March 27th, 2008 at 11:38 am
So if LeBron played with 2 high schoolers and 2 D1 college players his whole career he could never be the best player?
It’s 5 on 5 brah, with benches and 2 head coaches (It may have just changed from 1 on 1)
If NBA teams redrafted and every player was in the pool, the GM with the 1st pick would use about 2 seconds of his 5 minutes when they officially got on the clock to take the best basketball player in the world, LeBron James.
March 27th, 2008 at 11:41 am
What is the deal with the Technical Foul accumulation and the playoffs? Does it continue? How many more until the next suspension? Should Kobe get another technical to avoid a playoff suspension?
March 27th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Ted: Once you hit the number, you get 1 game. Then you get another 1 game for every 2 after that.
It clears in the playoffs, though.
I’m guessing here, but I think you need 8 T’s in the playoffs to get a suspension.
March 27th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
If it clears in the playoffs then it does not matter.
March 27th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
It would be funny if after playing the Portland game on April 8th Kobe just starts berating the refs to miss the Clippers game.
