Ballin’: Overcoming Kobe
NBA March 29th. 2008, 12:03pm
Memphis 114, Los Angeles Lakers 111: Kobe put up 53 – including 9 threes – but it just wasn’t enough as the Lakers fell. Rudy Gay scored 28 and Darko added 20 and 12 for the victorious Grizzlies. Memphis is closing in on 20 wins for the season!
Boston 112, New Orleans 92: Boston has now beaten every team in the league. MVP candidate KG scored 21 points and pulled down 13 boards. CP3 (4MVP) had 22 and 10 for the Hornets.
Orlando 103, Milwaukee 86: It was the much anticipated matchup between Dwight Howard and Michael Ruffin. Ruffin battled saliently and finished the game with 1 point and 8 assists. Howard was slightly better with 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Charlotte 96, Seattle 93: Jason Richardson scored 27 points and Ray Felton added 23. Kevin Durant scored 18 to lead the Sonics.
Washington 114, Sacramento 108: Antawn Jamison scored 25 to offset Ron Artest’s 28. The Wiz are a game up on Toronto for the 5th spot and a date with LeBron in round 1.
Toronto 103, New York 95: Chris Bosh had 29 and 10, but if I were him I’d throw games because there’s no way LeBron doesn’t get out of the first round of the playoffs.
Atlanta 106, Chicago 103: Mike Bibby dropped 30 points and 8 dimes all over the Bulls last night. The Hawks are clinging to the 8th spot in the East.
Indiana 123, New Jersey 115: Troy Murphy scored 21 points and collected 17 rebounds as the Pacers and Nets are battled for the 9th spot in the East.
Phoenix 107, Philadelphia 93: Raja Bell hit 5 three-pointers. Hooray!
Utah 121, Los Angeles Clippers 101: Hot damn, Boozer and Williams are good. 34 points and 17 rebounds for the former and 32 points and 10 assists for the latter.
Spurs 99, Minnesota 84: Manu Ginobili had 26 off the bench.

Maybe I’m the one out of touch, but which of these is the bigger story?
1. Kobe scores 50, or
2. The Lakers blow a chance to take undisputed first place in the West with 9 games left to play because they can’t beat an 18-53 team at home.
I know what I think, and it ain’t Kobe. After all, it is a team sport and all. But I’m not surprised that certain sports outlets disagree.
March 29th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
So, Jay, are you saying that Kobe isn’t the MVP of this here league? Blasphemy! Kobe>>>>>Jay.
March 29th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Did you just call me a “sports outlet?”
March 29th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Hell no, CRM. I always thought of this a T&A site!
March 29th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Go Hawks! I can’t wait to get my playoff tickets where we get slaughtered by the Celtics
March 29th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
@The Beard: we could use a lottery pick here in PHX so could you tell the Hawks to stop winning? Thanks.
March 29th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Who am I kidding, we’ll probably end up trading that pick to the Blazers for cash.
March 29th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
@Hef: Or a second round pick.
March 29th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
It’s true, we’re so lame.
/white guys drive like this, but black guys drive like this.
March 29th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Nick, I’ll write your next post for you:
Hef doesn’t care about black people.
Done. Got that one out of the way.
March 29th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Should I take that to mean I don’t generate new and orignal quips?
Nick Papageorgio doesn’t care about new material.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Hef, the Hornets will give you Bonzi Wells for it. We’ll even throw in a conditional second round pick in 2015.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
@nick: i think you’re the 14th most original poster on these boards.
@Jay: Let us throw in some money to make it fair.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Hef…do you actually spend your time ranking TBL commenters? anyways, we all know irish is no. 1.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
@spence: yes. I have nothing better to do than rank commmenters. My point system is more complex than Hollinger’s PER and just as arbitrary. Right now, you for instance, have a 37.5% chance of becoming the best poster of the week, but that’s only because Jay has been putting in more weekend time than you have (it was 50% at your all time best).
March 29th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Yeah, have a baby and watch how your posts double and triple LOL.
And back to “MVP” Kobe Bryant. All the Lakers had to do this week to be one game clear of New Orleans and San Antonio and have the Hornets catch them in the loss column was to beat Charlotte and Memphis at home.
If only Kobe could have scored a few more points….
March 29th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
little jerry ran from here to the end of the hall in 30 seconds!!
is that good?
i have no idea.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Jay, give it a rest. Why should the MVP of the league be able to beat arguably two of the three or four worst teams in the league at home? You make it sound like being the MVP of the league means being good enough to just pick up 4 guys and beat anyone. That’s not an MVP. To me, an MVP means you can win games playing alongside an excellent supporting cast (like Gasol, Shaq, or Bynum). When those guys get hurt, then all rules go out the window.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
@nick: I agree with almost everything in your post. My only problem is with people referring to Bynum as excellent supporting cast. He’s had three good months. It’s a bit much for three good months. Hell, Boris Diaw had 1 amazing season and now look at him.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
He also got himself run in the Charlotte game when the game was still in doubt by getting a T. That was barely mentioned this week, as was the fact that he gets one more T he misses a game. But the fact that he got 50 (and lost anyway) was front page news. But I’ll let it go now.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
I was being completely sarcastic with my post. Kobe is not the MVP by any definition.
Best player on a great team – Chris Paul
Best player on best team – Kevin Garnett
Best player. Period. – Lebron James
Take your pick of above, but it ain’t Kobe.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
The problem with not giving Bynum his due is that the last 2 years when the Lakers didn’t have a sick ass center they were also-rans. Then for those 3 months Bynum tears it up, and it shows in the win-loss column. So when people want to talk about Kobe as the MVP, lets just remember that the Lake-show would be better off w/ a different player taking his place at SG/SF, it would show in the win/loss column.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
@Jay: I’ve got two kids so I can’t really ever leave my house. That is why I’m up at 7AM on a Saturday waiting for CRM to crawl out of his hangover and post. How many do you have?
March 29th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Actually he does meet one definition of the MVP:
Best player to never win an MVP so he deserves to win one although his play this year would say otherwise and he never deserved one in years’ past (BPTNVAMSHDTWOAHPTYWSOAHNDOIYP) – Kobe Bryant
March 29th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
@nick: that’s what they do at the Oscars. I’m looking at you, Denzel.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Who was he up against that year? I thought he was good in TD.
If you had said Martin Scorcese, then we’d have an agreement.
March 29th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
He was good but it wasn’t his best. Just like scorcese.
March 29th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
arnold should win best actor…every year. predator was THAT good.
March 29th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
What i found funny about this whole Kobe bashing, is that the some people continue to talk about Kobe Bryant. If he was so bad that any SG/SF would be better to the Lakers than him (Desmond Mason we are waiting for you in LA) why the continue talk about him?
Any psychologist would tell you that results in a trauma. So, two choices, you are the girl that he raped in Colorado, or he’s so good that you envy the rapist.
And of course, CP3 is the only deserving MVP, and you can’t make any case for anybody else besides KG. Unless you want to give the prize to someone you can’t beat the Bobcats or Memphis at home, or someone who can’t win 50 games in the Eastern Conference. I’m glad the boys finally understand that.
March 29th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
RD didn’t say any SG/SF; he said different. I’m assuming he meant LBJ.
It’s more fun to read what you want, though. The facts will bend to the will of CH4’s premise!!
That being said, Lebron won’t win MVP. But also, MVP does not equal best player in the game.
March 29th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
What is more funny is that i already said multiple times that the best overall player in the league is LeBron James.
But still you have a serious problem in understand that…
And the facts don’t bend to me, they bend to you. You almost got me Nick P., but i already took my anti-idioten medication today. Uff…
March 29th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
i took my glaucoma medicine just now. im gonna eat some cookies and listen to the grateful dead really loudly.
March 29th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
If you’re the Lakers, and you don’t get 1st and the Suns get the higher seed, it seems like the tradeoff is no Nuggets/Warriors, but rather the Jazz.
My first thought is, i’d rather face the Jazz.
March 29th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
I would also rather face the Jazz or the Rockets if I’m the Suns. The top teams going into the playoffs right now (by way of scariest matchups) have to be the Hornets and Spurs. Those are the two that worry me.
March 29th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Dwight Howard for MVP….time to start it back up
@BEARD- your hawks are going to get there ass kicked tonight
AL Horford is going to dunked on 10 times, make him look soft
@nick- im proud of you for finally admitting LEbron will not win the MVP. you should of listened to me from the begginning of the year

I admit only that voters know nothing.
